Noneofthisworkwouldbepossiblewithoutthe trustanddeeprelationshipswehavedeveloped withthecommunitiesthatweworkandlivein. 2021andlaunchedthefundraisingcampaignfor TheSeacoastTrust,afunddevelopedtopower theSustainableSoutheastPartnership.Together withmanypartners,weweresuccessfulin raisingjustover$21million.Ourworkwasalso recognizednationally,andourSustainable ForestProductsClusterprojectwasselectedas oneof60finalistsfromaroundthenationto competefor$100MfromtheEconomic DevelopmentAdministration’sBuildBackBetter RegionalChallenge.

Inreachingtheseachievements,wehave learnedmanylessons.Ourteamhaschanged overthecourseof2021andisontrajectoryto growmorein2022.Withthischangecomesthe challengesofgrowingtheorganizationwhile maintainingthequalityofourprogramsor services.Asthegrowthoftheorganizationand thepaceofworkhasaccelerated,wehave realizedthattakingtimetoputourmentaland physicalhealthfirsthasbeenessential.In2021, weprioritizedtimetoreconnectasateam,and havetakenstepstomaintainahealthywork-life balance,whichcanprovechallengingintheage ofvirtualwork.Thispastyearhasfurther cementedwhatwehavealwaysheldtrue:we mustneverlosesightofthevalueofour relationships.

In2021,asurgeinentrepreneurshipin SoutheastAlaskaresultedinourteam assistingmorethan140entrepreneurswith over350hoursofsustainablebusiness developmenttraining.Weinvestedingrowing sectorsincludingmaricultureandregenerative tourismbytraining24individualsthrougha KelpandOysterFarmingWorkshop,hostinga regenerativetourism-focusedPathto Prosperitycompetition,andcreatinga marketingtoolkitanddigitallibraryofover 4,000photostohelpSoutheastAlaskan entrepreneursbolstertheirmarketing.We heldthelargest-evervirtualSustainable SoutheastPartnershipretreat,with85 participantsandsupportedmorethan95 collaborativeprojectsthroughoutthenetwork.

Oftentimes,theworkofbuildingmore equitableAlaskancommunitiescanfeelslow. However,in2021,wewereabletolaunch forwardonourfoundationoftrusttomovefast insomeexcitingways.Wesawthesteady rhythmofworkwehaveputinoverthepast nineyearsdevelopintoawaveofmomentum, leadingustoincredibleopportunitiestodrive changeandchannelresourcesintoour region.

In2021,wesawgreaterinterestinentrepreneurshiptrainingthaninourpast decadeofoperations.

Wemetthischallengebyassistingmorethan140entrepreneurswith350+hours ofsustainablebusinessdevelopmenttraining,preservingorcreatingmorethan70 businessesand100jobsin2021alone.

WealsoexpandedourofferingsbypartneringwithSealaskaHeritageInstituteto offeraUAS-accreditedcourseinCareerDevelopmentforArtists,whichwascotaughtwithravenstailweaverLilyHope.Wealsodevelopedabusinessplan templateandthreeexamplebusinessplansfortheAlaskaNativeHeritageCenter tobeusedbyculturaltourismbusinessesthroughoutthestate.

In2021,wedeployedatotalof $60,000 inloan capitaltothreesmallbusinesses.Todate,we havedisbursed$1.57millioninloancapitalto entrepreneursin9communities.TheSpruce Rootteamhadtotakeastepawayfromthe growthoftheCDFIprogramfollowingtheonset oftheCOVID-19pandemic,andareexcitedto reinvestinthebybuildingnewproductsand raisingmorecapitalforlendingin2022.
