Your Hospice – Our Future For over 30 years, we have been caring for local people living with and dying from cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. We have been making a highly valued difference to the quality of their life and the lives of their family members and carers thanks to our wonderful staff, volunteers and supporters.

We are now at an important stage in our development, needing to respond to a variety of financial and service demand challenges. Over many months we have been developing a strategy to enable us to meet these challenges.

At the heart of the strategy, is the aim to bring care closer to our patients and other service users by integrating Isabel Hospice services and collaborating closely with other health and social care providers to deliver services in three care settings: • At home or the patient’s usual place of residence.

• At a fit-for-purpose local venue.

• At a specialist In-Patient centre providing 24/7 care.

Our Aims Did you know that 15% of our patients have a non-cancer diagnosis? Regardless of disease diagnosis we have the twin aims of helping people at end-of-life with specialist palliative care needs to: Live well with a life-limiting illness by: •

Helping them earlier in their disease journey.

•

Offering advice and, where appropriate introductions to other sources of help.

•

Providing practical help e.g. Fatigue and Breathlessness clinics, diet advice and coping with the illness.

•

Making our services more accessible, at times and places closer to home.

•

Offering respite and support for carers.

Die well at a place of their choice by: • Planning care well in advance.

• Offering patients safe options for their preferred place of care, which is often their home or other usual place of residence.

•

The future of the In-Patient Unit (IPU) Our future service plans have been heavily influenced and constrained by the changes at the QE2 hospital site and their impact on our In-Patient Unit which is situated behind the hospital in Howlands. We have security of tenure in the form of a lease with 31 years remaining but we are looking at ways to improve our IPU which has served us extremely well for nearly 25 years, because: • •

It is becoming more difficult and expensive to maintain the quality of nursing care which we strive to offer.

It is not so easy to nurse the more complex patients we often see now or to accommodate their family members.

The East and North Herts NHS Trust is negotiating the sale of the old QE2 and surrounding land; until the outcome of this process is clear we cannot decide how we can improve the IPU or add a local care centre, but come what may our presence on the site is secure.

Our 12 Isabel Nurse Specialists are linked to GP surgeries right across our service area. They work closely with other health and social care providers (see page 6 for more details of their role) and also co-ordinate the other Hospice services which address patient needs, including:

Isabel Hospice is rooted in the community and our strength lies in being local. Our financial and volunteer support comes, in the main, from local people who can see first-hand the difference their contribution makes. Other than in Welwyn Garden City, we do not have any premises that:

Are in the local centres of population (Bishops Stortford, Ware/Hertford, Cheshunt/Waltham Cross).

•

Are close to GP surgeries.

•

We own and can use when and how we want.

•

Provide a visible Isabel Hospice presence to enhance our vital fundraising activity.

Uniquely in Hertfordshire, their role in the community is almost entirely funded by donations to Isabel Hospice (elsewhere in the county this role is fully NHS funded through NHS Hertfordshire Community Trust). For us, the ability to integrate home, day and in-patient services is fundamental to providing patient-centered care.

We shall therefore be looking for suitable premises for up to 3 Local Care Centres in the areas as shown on the map. However, we shall only develop this concept on a step by step basis starting with a pilot to assess demand and ensure real benefits occur. Close liaison with the NHS and Social Services and other providers will be key to this.

Ensuring family members receive pre and post bereavement support.

New Isabel Hospice Chairman is announced Isabel Hospice has had five Chairmen over it's 32 years of existence and Charles Lewis who has occupied that hot seat for the past 3 years, completed his term of office at the end of 2014. He was a trustee from 2002, and has played a significant part in the Hospice's development over that time, including spells as Chairman of the Trading Company. Over the past three years he has led the organisation through the uncertainty over the NHS's plans for the QEII site, and ensured that we have a clear and deliverable strategy which means we are well placed for the future. He has handed over the baton of Chairmanship to Rod Leggetter.

Rod, together with his wife Jan, is a longstanding supporter of the Hospice and resident of Welwyn. Now semi-retired, he has extensive experience in industry, in both executive and non-

executive positions and in working with Government agencies. He is also very involved in local community affairs, not least his golf club! We will publish a more detailed profile in our May issue of Care News but it is with pleasure that I can announce Rods appointment in this issue.

I would like to take the opportunity to say a huge thank you to Charles, not only for his service to the Hospice but also the personal support he has given me, and a warm welcome to Rod, as we embark on the next chapter in the development of Isabel Hospice.

Don’t be afraid of the word ‘Hospice’ – let us help you

Would you like to create a Lasting Memory?

We have launched a new online tribute page, called Lasting Memories. This is a place where you can create an online memorial to your loved one and record any money raised for the Hospice in their name.

As part of National Hospice Care week in October, we asked our patients and their families to tell us what they thought of our Hospice Care. One of the themes that came through strongly was that people shouldn’t be afraid of the word Hospice or what it means for them.

Until now, the only way to do this has been through the JustGiving website which is much more limited in terms of creating online memories than our Lasting Memories page.

With Lasting Memories, you can post photographs, capture thoughts and family stories as well as publicising fundraising events that are being held in your loved ones memory.

A lovely touch is that you can light “virtual candles” in memory of a loved one and invite other’s to do the same. Our Lasting Memories families tell us how nice it will be to see these lasting tributes grow and evolve over the years as they are revisited in months and years to come.

‘We are aware that if a hospital or a GP suggest involvement from the hospice this can be very frightening for patients and as a result some decline involvement which is very sad.”

With the agreement of the patient we work ‘as one’ in the community, ensuring the care is put in place alongside GPs and Hertfordshire Community Trust services. We see and discharge patients once things are settled but hope to have built the trust and confidence for them to make contact with us should their situation change.

As the creator of the site, you become the Tribute Guardian and all postings by friends or family members are approved by you before they go ‘live’. You can share the page via social media too so family and friends across the world can take part in sharing memories.

I would urge you not to be afraid of us, let us do what we can to support you when it would help you most.

You can also use Lasting Memories as one central point to register the funds raised in your loved one’s name. These can either be through direct donations to the site (which can also be gift aided if eligible) or by registering any fundraising already carried out. So for example, any money collected from a funeral and sent direct to the Hospice can be registered on the fundraising section of the site. As donations are made, people will be able to see the total rising.

Our thoughts about hospice care are now very different from those we had a year ago, knowing that John is in the care of the hospice team makes us both feel much more safe and secure, the kindness and dedication of everyone involved both staff and volunteers alike knows no bounds.

We certainly did not realize that hospices offer so much and were very surprised when the Motor Neurones Disease coordinator at Addenbrookes Hospital suggested that they would write to Isabel Hospice to see if some alternative therapy could be arranged.

John and I were both very pleasantly surprised when we received a call inviting us both to visit the Hospice’s Day Service for reflexology and massage. This was our first introduction to the many and varied ways in which Isabel Hospice helps patients and families trying to come to terms with life limiting illness.

Hospice Community nurses change their name to Isabel Nurse Specialists

Our Isabel Nurse Specialists, formerly known as Isabel Hospice Community Clinical Nurse Specialists are very often mistaken for Macmillan nurses, Marie Curie nurses or sometimes District Nurses. “And?....” you may think. “What’s in a name?” and of course, the nurse’s job title isn’t relevant at that moment, but it is very important that the patient and their family know where their care is coming from at a time when many medical professionals may suddenly become involved in their care .

Clarity reduces confusion which may lead to anxiety.

By giving our community nurses the simple title of ‘Isabel Nurse Specialists’ it makes it clearer that we are about more than the word ‘Hospice’ which is often perceived as a building where one thing happens. Isabel Nurse Specialists are there to offer support to both our patients and their families, and a holistic assessment at home and to enable them to decide what help they want from us, when and where. We are there to offer choice in their care plan from our team of Specialist Palliative care skilled nurses that provide care and compassion

in eastern Hertfordshire . We work with local GP’s, District Nurses and other care providers. We are more than just a building. The Community services are like a network who connect with other parts of our service, including our Hospice at Home team, connect at meetings in GP surgeries and regularly by phone.

We try to alleviate as much anxiety as possible, whilst acknowledging how hard this can be. The key is to ensure our Clinical knowledge and skills can be used by those who could benefit. We offer symptom control and full assessment of needs in an advisory capacity, working with the other professionals in the home or even in our nurse led clinics.

Lesley Ford, Lead Nurse for the Isabel Nurse Specialists explained “The word Hospice holds many different meanings for different people. Not always positive, often frightening.

However, on meeting our Isabel Nurse Specialists we hope your fears will be dispelled.”

Isabel Nurse Specialist Facts & Figures • Isabel Nurse Specialists are trained experienced nurses with specialist training in managing pain and other symptoms • On average, each visit costs £126

• Last year they made 8,818 home visits to 1,044 patients at home • 804 of these patients were new to the Hospice • They are supported and work alongside our team

of Hospice Consultants and Doctors • 15% of those patients had a non-cancer diagnosis They work in partnership with District Nurses and local GPs

• They cover a catchment area of 254 square miles including: Cheshunt, Cuffley, Buntingford, Bishop's Stortford, Hatfield, Hertford, Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Ware, Waltham Cross and Sawbridgeworth.

Memory Tree – dedicate a leaf to someone special We have just unveiled a beautiful Memory Tree at our InPatient Unit in Welwyn Garden City. The lovely handmade tree can be found looking out onto our garden and offers a unique and meaningful way to pay tribute to the memory of those whom you hold dear, to commemorate the life of someone special or to mark a special occasion.

The leaves are engraved with the name of your loved one and will remain on the tree for as long as you wish (minimum 12 months) . Every leaf engraved with the name of someone special will not only be creating a special personal tribute it will also be supporting our patients and their families who need hospice care.

You can choose to make a leaf dedication for one year for a suggested donation of £120 or choose to dedicate a leaf for as long as you wish for a suggested donation of £10 a month by direct debit (minimum of 12 months).* If you would like to discuss this further with us, please call Mark Spruce on 01707 382500. *If you dedicate a leaf for one year we will write to you asking if you would like to renew your leaf for another year, or if you would like it sent to you as a keepsake.

Coral Murphy started as our Corporate Relationship Manager in November. Since then, she has made great inroads to working with businesses large and small both to promote the work of the Hospice and working with them to support us.

“I came to Isabel Hospice from the East & North Herts Hospitals’ charity so I already have a background in patient and family care. Whilst there I was at first a Community Fundraiser, and then a Corporate Fundraiser working within a small team to raise around £1 million each year. This included working on a capital campaign to raise £250,000 for a new playroom on the children’s unit at Lister Hospital. A great project.

“I’m really excited and have applied my previous skills to Isabel Hospice, and being able to promote the positive experiences that so many patients and their families have at the Hospice within the local business community making it easy and worthwhile for them to support us. I’m a very hands on sort of person and prefer face to face to email, because behind every email address is a person!

With our organised events such as the Firewalk, our overseas treks, the golf days and our runs and cycle rides it’s so easy for companies to help us by putting teams in or sponsoring the event itself.

We have very positive relationships with local newspapers and radio, and so an association with Isabel Hospice is always a positive thing for companies.

As well as corporate sponsorship and relationship building I will be focussing on Payroll Giving.

This is a great way to support the Hospice and I would be interested in hearing from any companies who would like work with us in this way. It enables employees to give donations to the Hospice, straight from their gross salary, giving immediate tax relief on up to 50% of these donations.

As you can see there are lots of exciting opportunities ahead and I look forward to working with many of you and meeting you at our The 1st Thursday, and The 3rd Thursday networking meetings which I now host at Lussmanns in Hertford and the Water Lane Restaurant in Bishop’s Stortford.”

'I’m going to Iceland, and I don’t mean the shop' Geoff Rawlings runs a large format digital print company in Welwyn Garden City, Best Digital. Since they moved to the town 4 years ago they have been generously supporting the Hospice by printing event banners, posters and pop ups free of charge. Geoff has now taken the giant step of signing up for our Iceland Trek in March. “I have not done anything sponsored since I did a sponsored spell at Skool when I was Severn. I do remember it being very simple I asked my Mum my Nan and the old lady next door (who was probably only 35 but everyone looks old when you’re 7) to sponsor me. This time is going to be harder and the stakes are higher. I used to be a 20 a day smoker and the biggest obstacle was the pub bar” said Geoff. “I had a son a year ago, and I knew I had to get fit so I could be there for him. It’s going to be a big challenge for me, as I like my luxuries and I’m not into camping or really walking! I do like the cold so that’s going to be fine, but the rest of it is going to be hard!

Charity Shops Happy Birthday Cheshunt Shop Our Cheshunt shop in Turners Hill recently celebrated their 25th birthday with an afternoon tea. All the volunteers were invited as well as past and present shop managers. Cheshunt was the first Isabel Hospice shop* and moved to bigger premises 10 years ago from its initial location in College Road.

It was a special day because two volunteers, Prudence Pearman and Doris Ridgewell, were there who have been with Isabel Hospice since the shop opened and they both received their 25 year long-service certificates. Prudence is the Hospice’s Trading Company’s longest serving volunteer and represented the trading company at the garden party when we received our Queen’s Award for Volunteering in 2009.

Cheshunt shop has a great group of volunteers managed by Rita George and Peggy Collins who, both started with us as volunteers. *Isabel Hospice had shops in Welwyn Garden City before Cheshunt, but they were on short term leases, (more like pop up shops). Their success led to Cheshunt being opened as our first long lease shop.

Hatfield Galleria Embraces Vintage

Set in the ultra-modern Hatfield galleria, the Isabel Hospice charity shop now has a corner of vintage glamour, which was launched on the night of the Hatfield University Student Lock-in Night. With the opening of this new desirable, chic and vintage section we feel we can now appeal to even more shoppers.

Shop Manager Emily Horwood said “The student lock-in was an ideal event for us to launch our vintage section set within the normal shelves and rails of modern items, and we took around £450 in just two hours.

We had lots of students taking advantage of the 3 for 2 offer we had on the night and since then have seen more students coming into the shop looking for a bargain, and for clothing that no-one else around campus will have. The evening was fun, I had arranged for a dance group called The Savoy Hop to perform the lindy hop, Charleston and jive outside the shop which brought a great feel to the night as well as attracting more customers. We are always looking for more donations of vintage, retro or kitsch items for sale as well as any modern clothing and household items, so please consider donating as well as buying.”

Sawbridgeworth Volunteers Needed We are looking for volunteers to join the team in our Sawbridgeworth shop. Ideally placed next to the free car park just off Bell Street, the shop is one of our newest locations.

Make A Will Week WHY UPDATE YOUR WILL There are many important reasons why you should have an up-to-date Will.

ensure that your estate goes to those people you wish to benefit put in place guardianship of your children ensure that your estate is left in a tax efficient manner make known your wishes about your funeral arrangements

We always want our supporters to provide for their families first and foremost, but did you know that there is a way in which you can support Isabel Hospice whilst protecting their share? By leaving a percentage or portion of your estate to the Hospice, your loved ones are protected in the event of any significant changes to the value of your estate in the future, such as the cost of care home fees.

If, for example, your net estate is worth £300,000 (this being the average sale price of a terraced house in Hertfordshire in July 2014, according to www.home.co.uk), and you leave just 1% (£3,000) to Isabel Hospice, that means that your beneficiaries will still receive £297,000. Whilst it is unlikely that the £3,000 gift will impact on them significantly, this sum could pay for 43 sessions at our Day Services or 24 visits by our Isabel Nurse Specialists to patients in their own homes.

Local solicitors will prepare or amend your Will. Instead of charging a fee, they will invite you to make a donation to Isabel Hospice.

Suggested minimum donations: basic Will £100, a pair of basic Mirror Wills £150. More complex Wills may incur a charge.

This type of gift left to us in your Will would help to ensure that our services are here for future generations. We are very grateful for every gift that is left to Isabel Hospice in this way.

Driving - Its’ not just about going from A to B!

Feeling low and isolated is a common side effect of living with a life limiting illness as the rounds of hospital visits and appointments, scans and tests impinge on normal life.

This is particularly the case for those living alone. Our Day Services enable patients to relax and talk together on a regular basis. We usually also offer complementary therapies, physiotherapy and counselling too. Equally it’s perfectly fine to come along and sit to read the paper with a cup of tea.

Isabel Hospice Volunteer drivers are fundamental in enabling attendance. For many patients. The journey itself is an opportunity for patients, carers and the bereaved to share what’s going on for them, the world or the weather if they wish. Every driver will tell you people go home happier and more positive than on the way in.

Ian’s Story

Ian Boden has been a volunteer driver for 5 years. He got involved after the Hospice cared for his father-in-law and his mother-in-law and he saw a piece in Care News asking for drivers.

I know the song I want at my funeral, it inspires me everyday Jacque Beattie age 51, has been living with cancer for a very long time. First diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997 aged just 34 she had two mastectomies and thought she was in the clear until she was driving her young sons back from a day out at Thorpe Park in 2000 and her vision became blurred. She went to her optician and after undergoing tests there they told her to go straight to the hospital where a tumour was found behind her eye.

“Although I underwent lots of radiotherapy the cancer spread to my bones, in my hip and my spine. I had 5 cycles of chemotherapy and over the years I have also tried a trial drug but it wasn’t for me.

I had an operation to encase my spine in metal but a year to the day I was actually at the In-Patient Unit for some respite last July when my legs started to go. My spinal cord had compressed and within a few days I was unable to walk.

“ I had retired early and was getting under my wife’s feet, so when Pat showed me the Care News it seemed like a good thing to do. I undertook the Hospice’s volunteer training course and was pleasantly surprised about how good it was!

I don’t know what I expected, but as they are a small local charity I didn’t expect it to be so comprehensive, and so focussed on looking after you as a volunteer as well as looking after the patient.

I feel so fortunate to have met the people I have whilst driving. I never ceased Ian Boden to be inspired by their attitude, their outlook on the life they have left and how grateful they are for our service. Of course, there are those patients that stay with you. One lady in particular really reminded me of my mum, and so it is hard when she died, but I know I’m doing something worthwhile.

It’s so much more than just a lift in a car. Most regulars want to tell you their story and you learn the importance of listening. I’m driving a gentleman at the moment who lives alone and isn’t mobile. He lives in the most beautiful countryside location but he is trapped within his house apart from the time that I pick him up, drive him once a week to our Day Service where he can have company, a chat and see our nurses. Isabel Hospice really is a lifeline for him. I give him a lift and it lifts my spirits to know how much I am helping. I can honestly say, I get much more out of volunteering as a driver than I feel I give and would recommend anyone does it. It puts life into perspective and it’s so rewarding. Looking on the lighter side, it’s got me out of lots of shopping trips and DIY! “I can’t possibly do shopping with you darling, the Hospice needs me to drive!”

Volunteering - Ringing in the changes In my 17 years at the Hospice I have seen many changes.

Throughout our patients have been our focus as we’ve strived to improve our reach, effectiveness and efficiency.

Our community support has grown in line with needs and our volunteers have continued to cherish and support us in ever increasing ways. Embracing community involvement is something we do well. The early volunteering pioneers gave way to a new generation and this group in turn is passing the mantle to the next. In recent months long standing volunteers Jill Ricketts and Swaraj Vir have both retired from our service.

These two were group leaders for In-Patient Unit volunteers for a long time and many volunteers, will remember with great affection and amusement the Christmas parties they organised. My cabaret performance calling bingo with Swaraj is well remembered by many. Now it’s my time to go and I pass on the management of the patient care voluntary service to my deputy Linda Wood. It has been an enormous privilege to know so many wonderfully generous people and harness

energies in the service of patients and families within Isabel Hospice. My common thought has always been ’ I do nothing but juggle and arrange for so many to do so much’, with about 180 -200 active volunteer roles. My proudest moment must be the recognition of all Isabel Hospice Volunteers in gaining the Queens Award for Volunteering in 2009 and its reflection onto my team by association; but the actuality of delivering an effective, ongoing seamless support to clinician colleagues has been hugely important. I will miss everyone but the need and challenge is to refresh, renew and prepare for the future to ensure our community continues to be served well.

In all this time Isabel Hospice has been there for me.

They remind you to think about yourself. The staff and volunteers are so positive. I have never met such people, they have an aura about them; from the lady that cleans your room, to the cook that makes such delicious food, and the nurses that visit me at home.

The loss of the use of my legs has really been the hardest thing for me. I am such an independent person and now we have had to move my bed downstairs and we are trying to plan how to adapt my bathroom access as I can’t get in there on my own in my wheelchair. Sometimes I think, is it worth it, as I’m not going to be around much longer. I try not to think about the future and live for the day, but with my two sons, one being severely autistic, I have to make plans. So, I have my funeral organised. I know who I want to speak at it, and I know the song I want. It inspires me and the words are very special.

Our Lottery is celebrating its 20th birthday this year. Celebration time!

Volunteer of the Year As part of our wide range of services, we care for patients and support their families at home. ‘Home’ can be defined as our patients usual place of residence, so not only their house or flat, but also in care homes or nursing homes. We have a dedicated Isabel Nurse Specialist who visits and supports the nursing and care staff in these homes. Our Community Team are able to refer you to other parts of our service, including our Family Support Team and our Therapy Team. We also have superb support from many hundreds of volunteers, who enable us to provide high quality support on a limited budget.

Sarah Gray from Watton at Stone said “The advice and support from Caroline, our Isabel Nurse Specialist while we were trying to manage mum’s symptoms at home was invaluable. Her and the Hospice Counsellor, Pola, helped me personally manage my own emotions and get things in perspective - knowing there is always someone in the team to speak to gives me the strength to deal with the difficult days and we have never felt alone when making the hardest decisions.

We are delighted to announce that Renee Friend, long standing patient care volunteer and Chair of the Bishop’s Stortford and Hadhams Fundraising support group, has been given the Herts & Essex Newspaper Series, Volunteer of the Year Award. This award is well deserved, and we would like to thank Renee for her many years of dedicated service.

Listening to our patients Isabel Hospice is committed to reviewing and improving the quality of care.

One of the ways in which we evaluate our service is through patient surveys. Asking patients and their families for feedback on their experiences provides us with an insight into what is working well and what needs improvement.

We have been able to identify what is important for patients and their families and which aspects of their experiences have been positive.

The response from our patients is also important to provide us with an understanding of any areas of concern for patients and their families and where improvements can be made.

The bereavement information leaflet has been updated to include elements on grief and loss The number of activities provided by Family Support Groups has been reduced to allow for more discussion based therapies.

We continue to develop our services and the following projects are ongoing: •

The existing In-Patient information pack has been reviewed and a new information booklet for patients being admitted to the unit is being designed.

A formal handover process between Palliative Care Support Workers and other community carers is being progressed to provide continuity of care

•

A review as to how we can effectively capture the views of patients and their families in the community is currently being considered.

A huge thank you to all our Fundraising groups in Bishop Stortford, North Mymms, Ware, Broxbourne and Welwyn Garden City for the tremendous effort raising such magnificent funds.

Over many years the Woodhall Tea Dance organisers have supported the Hospice, and in 2014 their donation total reached an amazing £10,000!

Lynmore singers collected whilst performing Carols at Broxbourne train station £430 Thank you to Pexhurst for their continuing sponsorship of our Bells & Bows campaign.

The Free Church in Welwyn Garden City donated £789 from their Christmas Fair. Thanks also to everyone who held Christmassy inspired events and donated their proceeds to the Hospice, we are very grateful.

Thanks to Cedar Park Lodge for the donation of £700 and to all the Masonic Lodges across eastern Herts who have been so supportive, including Alan Tyler who held an Open Garden resulting in £4,000 for Isabel Hospice.

Our Lights of Love ceremonies raised £29,000 this year. Thank you to all who attended, made a dedication and supported us with their organisation.

Thank you the cast of "Stepping Out" by Much Hadham Drama Group and Director Barry Lee. Organised by the Special Events Committee, it raised £2,400 from a Gala Evening, attended by 105 guests.

Isabel Hospice Benefits Adviser helps ease the burden

In this issue of Care News you will have seen how our services help so many local people. We are only part-funded by the NHS so regular donations, large and small are vital contributions to our running costs. Just £3 per month could make a real difference. Thank you in advance.

Stephen Cambery is the Welfare Benefits Adviser who works for the East Herts Citizens Advice Service which supplies help and advice to Isabel Hospice patients. He explained,

“People often have money worries but don’t like to ask for help. They feel embarrassed about the whole idea of claiming benefits although they may have been paying their National Insurance for many years and are perfectly entitled to help at what is a terribly difficult time for them.

Recently a patient was referred to me. He was terminally ill and was told he didn’t qualify for EmpIoyment and Support Allowance (ESA) as he didn’t have the correct national insurance contributions record. I investigated this and after numerous phone calls, was able to establish he had a short gap in his contributions. The patient was able to make a small payment to cover this and started to receive ESA plus backdated benefit for six months. This reduced financial pressure and stress on him and his family at a difficult time.

In another case, I was helping a 58 year old patient to claim a new benefit called Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

He had previously tried to make a claim himself and his form had got stuck in a backlog. Unfortunately he died within two weeks of my visit and before the latest claim was processed.

Since then I have been helping his widow Fidelma to receive the backdated benefits Jim should have received as his original claim for PIP started back in 2013. He had also been receiving a lower rate of ESA for six months than he was entitled to.

When the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) were told of his death through the ‘tell us once’ system they closed both claims.

I managed to get a review on both benefits and Fidelma received over £5,500 of backdated benefit which Jim should have received when he was alive.”

It is very comforting to know that I can avail of the ongoing support from Isabel Hospice”

Stephen added “We are able to see patients and their families at the CAB offices in Hertford but I can also visit patients at home, and am available at the Hospices Day Service one a week. There are also two CAB generalist advisers Steven Keeling and Nigel Rhodes working on the project and their valuable support work should be recognised. I’d encourage anyone to come and see me if they have a money worry.

Just a quick word with me could be the reassurance you need, and if not, we can book for a longer visit where I can do an assessment for you. I often hear the words “I’m not a scrounger” or “I’ve never had a hand out in my life.” I’m here to help you get what you are entitled too and ease the financial burden you are carrying.
