A Message from 0ur Chairman of Trustees You may be aware of the proposals from the developer Bellway Homes to build houses around the Hospice’s InPatient Unit at Howlands, Welwyn Garden City. I will explain our position in this regard below, but want to start by stressing that our overall strategy as a Hospice is to invest in services which brings care closer and into people’s homes.

The Howlands situation is one that has been imposed on us but we will not allow it to distract from our efforts to care for people across the whole of our eastern Hertfordshire catchment area. We will never lose sight of the fact that the majority of our patients are cared for in their homes.

(We cared for 1,371 patients in 2014/2015, and of those, 220 were admitted to the In-Patient Unit.) We will therefore be redoubling our efforts to invest in day and community services and this will be a key element of our plans going into the new financial year in April.

Turning to the demolition of the old QE2 hospital and the subsequent building of new housing. This development will inevitably cause disruption that means that we will have to move off site for a period of about 6 months so we have put in place contingency plans and have secured the necessary legal and financial agreements from the East and North Herts NHS Trust (our landlord) and from Bellway Homes that will

protect the Hospice’s interests and enables in-patient care to continue. It is currently expected that this work will take place in mid-2017 but it is subject to planning permission being granted from Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council in early March.

Concurrently with this planning approval process we are exploring an alternative solution to the site development that would avoid Hospice traffic through the housing estate and enable us to build new facilities which would improve endof-life care for our community. This envisages a multi-purpose care facility, including longer term nursing care beds, situated next to the proposed residential care home and closer to the new QE2 Hospital and GP surgery. The next Care News will give more details on the outcome of discussions around these options.

In the meantime I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continuing interest in and generous support of your local Hospice; as ever we are heavily dependent on the ongoing financial and volunteering support of the local community which we will continue to serve.

Living Well With Isabel It is a common misconception that Hospice care is only for you in the last few weeks of your life, often at the In-Patient Unit. This is an idea that we would like to dispel.

Our Living Well with Isabel programme, run by our Therapy Team* enables our patients to have a better quality of life, even though they have a potentially life shortening condition. It is suitable for patients who are living at home and have lost confidence in their ability to get around independently because of breathing or mobility issues. The programme is held at the Nigel Copping Centre in Stansted Abbotts and offers sessions of a variety of active exercise and relaxation. Transport to the sessions can be arranged if necessary with our volunteer drivers.

Here are some of our patients’ stories.

Janet Packer “I have secondary breast cancer, now in my bone, and before I met the Living Well team I was really not moving around much. My Isabel Nurse Specialist, Georgina, recommended that I saw the Hospice physio and I’m so glad I did. I seriously thought I’d never be mobile again and now I’m much more positive. In the summer I visited my caravan in Northumberland with my family. When they went out for the day I set myself a goal and walked a mile to the local shop, bought an icecream and walked back. When they got back from their day out, I wasn’t there. I texted my daughter from down by the river and said ‘Guess where I am’?. What an achievement! I bought Paula the physiotherapist, a packet of biscuits from Northumberland as a thank you for all her team have done for me. My family were astounded at my achievement.”

Colin Hall “They are so friendly and encouraging here. When I had my heart attack, I thought it would be the end to so many things but coming here means I have more energy. The cardiac nurse at Princess Alexandra Hospital suggested I contact Susie, the Isabel Hospice Specialist Nurse and she sorted this out for me. It’s been excellent.”

Margarethe Joliffe “I wouldn’t do half the exercise at home that I do here and that is because I feel confident that I am being supervised by qualified people. They show me how to do it properly and I know I am getting the technique right on each piece of equipment.” Margarethe Joliffe attends the Living Well programme with her husband.

*The Therapy Team is made up of physiotherapists, an occupational therapist and a lymphoedema therapist, supported by trained volunteers.

Isabel Hospice really did help me, help David, have a ‘nice’ death It sounds strange when I tell people, but Isabel Hospice really did help me, help David have a ‘nice’ death.

I say that because David was able to die at home, age 51, with Rachmaninov playing on YouTube, surrounded by family. Our daughter Zara (6) was out with friends, but when she came home, we were able to put on his favourite song, Mr Blue Sky, and Zara was able to snuggle up in bed with him for a last cuddle. And because I had been caring for David at home for the last 6 weeks, it seemed an entirely natural thing to do. I will be forever grateful to the Hospice for this.

David and I met 10 years ago. Within a month of starting a new relationship he was diagnosed with a grade 2 brain tumour. He had an operation to remove as much as they could and several weeks of radiotherapy. Whilst this made our relationship very strong, very quickly, it also meant that from the very start we knew we weren’t going to grow old together and we wouldn’t be two 80 year olds sitting with a windbreak on Clacton beach!

But I knew then that I would rather have David in my life for a short time, than not at all.

Perhaps surprisingly, we didn’t live our lives always thinking about David’s tumour. We simply got on, appreciating what we had, though it was obviously always in the back of our minds. Then at Christmas 2013 we were shocked to find out it had come back aggressively and was widespread; the news we had always dreaded. David’s surgeon operated again and over the next year he had 10-12 cycles of chemotherapy, with varying degrees of success, until in June 2015 our lovely consultant, Dr Harris, gave us the news that there was no more treatment.

David was never a moaner. He was frightened, he thought it was unfair but he never complained. However, this news really floored him. I also felt that my safety net had gone. Dr Harris had always had been there for us, supporting us through all the ups and downs and suddenly that was it. Who would look after him now?

That summer we knew it would be our last summer together and tried to fill it with memories. We went to the South of France, had a huge family weekend in Somerset and had some wonderful times. David had no real physical symptoms that you would see and we spoke about lots of important things including his funeral. Later in the summer we went to Norfolk with my parents and within days David’s condition deteriorated. He found it difficult to walk, to get to the toilet, gradually losing control of his body. We even had to borrow a wheelchair from the local hospital to get to the beach. It was such a turnaround from just a few weeks before.

From the moment we met, Sharon filled me with confidence.

Once we got home, Isabel Nurse Specialist Sharon Watkins came to visit. She noted the change in David’s condition and immediately got things moving to help me, help him.

From the moment we met she filled me with confidence and I trusted her. Her experience and warmth gave me the courage to know I could help David at home and get this last thing right for him and I am so grateful to her. She knew the contacts for everyone; she got us equipment and drugs sorted; she liaised with the GP and the District Nurses and she helped get a care package in place. Although she was going on leave, I was so impressed that she arranged for someone else from the Hospice to check up on us when she was away.

Unfortunately, David was diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) the next day and ended up in hospital. They just couldn’t give him the specialist care he needed. By now he could no longer talk and I felt terrible leaving him there. It was an awful experience and made it clear in our minds that we just wanted him to be at home.

And that’s what Isabel Hospice helped us to do. A hospital bed was delivered, and David slept in the living room, next to the big window that looked out the front. Family and friends came and went, before and after work, just dropping in to chat to me, and spend time with David, although quite often he was sleeping now. Zara was able to see her dad whenever she liked-before and after school, reading to him, building Lego with him, tap dancing for him! David’s older children,

Mike, Steve and Sophie, also spent as much time as they liked with their dad in the way they felt comfortable- in our home.

Over those few weeks I phoned the Hospice Urgent Advice line several times. When David had a seizure, I wanted to know I had done everything right. When David stopped drinking, I just wanted to know that that was a natural part of dying. I was assured it was.

When David’s breathing became erratic, I wanted to know if that was normal. It was. I was always reassured, as the Hospice nurses are experts, they told me I was doing all the right things for David, and I needed to know that. Sharon also visited us frequently and was such a support to everyone involved.

When David died on 4th October 2015 he did so peacefully at home. Sharon had popped in to see him on her way back from work and I was so pleased she had got to say goodbye.

Since then the Hospice have continued to come and support myself and Zara. Nurse Wendy visits Zara regularly and has made a memory box with her, and she has decorated a tea light with a painting of her daddy in bed and given her someone to talk to.

When we were on holiday in France ,we saw a white feather.

Together, David and Zara decided that sunsets would be their sign that he is looking down on her and loving her. Since his death we have seen some lovely sunsets.

Volunteering

Did you know our volunteers donate over 80,000 hours of time to us each year? Volunteering offers flexible times and a chance to work in a great team. We see individuals grow in confidence, competence and learn new skills.

Stuart’s Story Former technical engineer Stuart started volunteering for the Hospice 19 years ago after taking voluntary redundancy from British Gas. In his time with us he has driven our vans, PAT tested electrical donations, listed books on our Amazon shop page and even swept the floor in the Warehouse. Stuart said “They are such nice people here and keep me supplied with tea and coffee. I do like it here and wouldn’t keep coming back for 19 years if I didn’t.”

Kerie Lovelock the Warehouse manager said “Stuart comes in twice a week and because he mucks in so much we would be lost without him.”

Stuart’s voluntary work doesn’t stop with the Hospice, he also volunteers for the Radio Society of Great Britain and Hertfordshire Regiment Association. What a star!

In November we nominated him for the Herts & Essex Newspapers Volunteer of the Year. Unfortunately he was pipped to the post by another worthy candidate from a local charity.

Charity Shops Bishop’s Stortford says farewell to much loved volunteer Joy Anderson (83) has retired after 24 years’ service to the Bishop’s Stortford shop.

She was given a warm send-off by all the team and they celebrated with tea and cake whilst reminiscing about her time as a volunteer. Joy joined the Bridge Street shop when it first opened in 1991, and has been volunteering there ever since.

Joy has not only been generous with her time in the Bishop’s Stortford shop. She also spent time as a volunteer carer at the Hospice’s In-Patient Unit located in Welwyn Garden City which cared for 220 patients last year.

Louise Vigus, the shop manager said “We will be sad to see Joy go. She has been amazing for the shop and we will miss her. We would welcome any new volunteers who can spare a few hours a week. There is always plenty to do, and you will make some new friends too.”

Fantastic Facelift - every little (alot) helps....

Thanks to Tesco, our Cheshunt shop and one of our shops in Welwyn Garden City have had a facelift. These were two of our first shops and we are delighted that they have had a well-deserved spruce up.

Tesco also took over 10 of our 15 shops on 11th December and their teams competed against each other to raise as much as they could for the Hospice. We are delighted to announce they raised around £10,000!.

They compteted against each other to raise as much as they could for the Hospice in one day.

The Lemon Tree in Bishop’s Stortford held a dinner raising £2,400.

Marion Gray and her fellow Vietnam trekkers held a Right Royal Party to raise money for the Hospice. They raised a magnificent £25,000! Marion’s group are all self-funding which means all the money they raise will go directly to the Hospice.

The Worpell Pub in Ware have been amazing supporters and held numerous events and meat raffles raising over £3,000 in 2015.

The Isabel Hospice Special Events Committee worked extremely hard last year and put on a number of fabulous events including a Fashion Show & Afternoon Tea in conjunction with Retail Therapy in Hanbury Manor raising £4,800 , Sail Away celebrating 70 years of Cunard, which raised £13,000, Ultimate Elton at Hopleys in Much Hadham was organised by Barry Lee and the Committee and raised in the region of £9,700. Thanks to all concerned.

Thanks always to our friends in the Rotary Clubs Great Amwell, Bishop’s Stortford and Hatfield.

Our Family Support Team would like to thank the Claydon Centre group in Cuffley for their continued support and commitment, headed up by Tony and Anita Ostler, Pauline and Chris plus others. They, along with Valeside Catering and County Castles of Hertford enable us to put on our Summer Family Fun day each year. Thanks also goes to Paradise Wildlife Park for their support with our children’s Christmas Party .

Justine Poulter and Michele Samek – Richardson made an amazing total of £17,311.13 from their Happy Days Ball. Thanks to Justine and to everyone who made it such a fantastic event.

Urban Spa/Elements in Bishop’s Stortford continue to support the Hospice and raised £300 from their raffle and fundraising.

In memory of Eve Bowring, fundraiser extraordinaire, who has sadly passed away.

Eve was one of the original fundraisers for the Hospice, beginning in 1988 with coffee mornings, marmalade making and running stalls at local fetes. The first year’s receipts were £1,173. Yearly profits gradually rose with the addition of houseto-house collections, quiz nights and the sale of sunflower pin badges to almost £12,000 in 2002. It was at this point, when Eve was 80, that she took a bit of a back seat, concentrating on her knitting and jam making. She and her friend Joan used to produce 400 jars of conserves for the annual Christmas market. No one could have loved the Hospice more than Eve, and working for it was her reason for living. People with that dedication are a rare breed and it was an honour to have known her.
