The town that moved’ to commemorate centenary of 1916 flood In the early hours of December 28, 1916 a wall of water laid ruin to the old town of Clermont after a cyclone crossed the Queensland coast.
Mayor Baker said the pinnacle event will take place on the 100th anniversary of the flood, on December 28, 2016.
This year Isaac Regional Council is set to commemorate the centenary of the flood that tragically took more than 60 lives and forced a township to move.
“Council will host a graveside memorial service at the Clermont Cemetery from 9am.”
Mayor Anne Baker said Council commemorations will begin with the launch of an exhibition ‘A Flood of Memories’ at the Clermont Historical Centre, August 31. “The 1916 Clermont Flood Exhibition is a collection of local stories, photos and memorabilia that will transport you back in time. “Learn what life in Clermont was like during the early days of settlement right up to that fateful morning when flood waters devastated the town. The exhibition will run from August 31 to December 2017 and is available to view during operating hours Wednesday to Saturday. “Council is hosting two commemorative events to honour the lives lost in one of the deadliest floods in Australian history. “A special plaque unveiling will take place from 9am on October 1 at the Clermont Hoods Lagoon.”

It was on for young and old across Isaac as residents celebrated another successful Seniors Week, August 13 – 21.
“Thank you to everyone who helped our seniors feel special and valued, and we hope they feel this way yearround.”
Residents from Dysart, St Lawrence, Moranbah, Clermont and Carmila came out to celebrate and show their appreciation for the senior members of their towns.
Councillor Lynette Jones spoke at the Clermont event and commented on the impressive turn out.
From high teas to craft sessions, singing lessons to Mandala workshops, the emphasis was on fun, family and giving back. Clermont hosted another memorable celebration with seniors treated to local history quiz and the chance to win big at the annual cent sale. Mayor Baker said it was great to see so many people come together to show their appreciation. “It’s really important to recognise the senior members of our communities and the valuable contributions they make to our society.” she said.
“Seniors are part of our community’s fabric and it was a joy seeing them celebrated and having such a great time,” she said. “I would also like to commend the seven work experience students from Clermont State High School who professionally assisted with the luncheon. Isaac’s Seniors Week events were made possible with thanks to Hinterland Community Care, Moranbah Arts, Moranbah and District Support Services, BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), Smart Stay Villages and Queensland State Government.

Celebrate Children’s Book Week at Isaac Libraries Australia’s top children’s books will come to life across Isaac this Children’s Book Week. Kindy kids visit Clermont Library
First Five Forever
A special hello to the children from the C&K Clermont Kindergarten who recently visited the Clermont Library.
The First Five Forever program aims to give children from birth to five years old the best chance in life and improve literacy outcomes.
The children enjoyed a tour of the library, learning about the different types of books available at the library and that there are also DVDs and ‘talking books’ to borrow. As the children were learning about the Olympics, they discussed the Olympics with library staff and what Olympic event was their favourite. Swimming, running and gymnastics were popular. The children enjoyed reading ‘Wombat went A-Racing’ and cheered for wombat as he won the long-distance race. They were very creative in designing their own Olympic medal.
Babies and children love sharing stories and it’s never too early to talk, read and tell stories with your child. The Clermont Library runs three children’s sessions a week and all programs are aimed at helping young children develop their literacy, numeracy and language skills from a young age, through singing nursery rhymes, performing action songs and reading books. Children’s Book Week is held from 20 – 26 August and is a celebration of Australian children’s literature. Every year during Children’s Book Week, the Children’s Book Council of Australia announces the ‘Book of the Year’ winners. ‘Choose Your Own adventure’ returns Are you a child of the ‘80’s? You may have grown up reading ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ books. ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ books are back in vogue, waiting for a new generation to discover the fun of choosing the plot as they read through the book. For those who are not familiar with the ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ genre, these books aren’t read page by page. As you read through, you will have a couple of options to decide the storyline and when you have chosen an option, you are directed to a particular page number to continue the storyline. You can read the book again and again, following a different storyline each time. Come in and check out these ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’-style books: You choose: Scooby-Doo! – The Curse of Atlantis by Laurie S. Sutton You choose: Scooby-Doo! – The Secret of the Flying Saucer by Laurie S. Sutton Bag a book bargain If you love books and a bargain, come and check out the Clermont Library Book Sale. Most of the books and items on sale are preloved library books in good condition and paperbacks, magazines and CDs are priced at $2, hardbacks and DVDs cost $3 or buy a bag of books for $12. Stock is constantly being added to the sale shelves.
Children love Baby Bounce, Storytime, Craft and Rhymetime Have you recently moved to Clermont with a young family and want to meet other young families? The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a good way to connect with other parents with young children. Rhymetime and Craft is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs. Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years. Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song. Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age. The Isaac State Emergency Service (SES) is part of a national organisation of ‘ordinary people doing extraordinary things’.

Each year they help their communities in times of emergency and disaster, protecting the safety of our people.

The Isaac SES is always in need of volunteers. All SES volunteers are trained and equipped to help their communities with the primary purpose of helping our most vulnerable community members. Isaac SES operate across depots in Moranbah, Nebo, Clermont, Dysart, Middlemount, Glenden, St Lawrence, Carmila and Greenhill, and welcomes volunteers aged 16 years and over.
What We Do Isaac SES volunteers empower members of the community to help themselves and others in times of emergency and disaster, so they can focus on helping the most vulnerable. SES members work as part of a skilled team and have approved functions based on local hazards and skill sets. As an SES volunteer you may not be activated on a regular basis, however your assistance will be critical when needed.
Becoming ‘Extraordinary’ No matter who you are or what you do, there’s an SES task to suit everyone. Our volunteers come from diverse backgrounds - officer workers, miners, farmers, students, tradies and retirees. In addition to helping your community in times of need you’ll become part of a like-minded yet diverse group of people. You’ll form lasting friendships, and develop real life skills and knowledge that can be carried through to the workforce and will stay with you forever. Many Isaac employers support volunteers in their workforce, meaning if you’re activated while at work they will support your SES commitments.

CLASS DESCRIPTION Gut and Butt Blast is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane. While simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level. Circuit training This is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using highintensity/low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance. An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness.
XT - THUMP boxing It’s a nice way to start your day. This class incorporates 10mins of circuit cardio, 10mins strength training and 20mins thump boxing. A fully functional total body workout that burns, burns, burns. 80’s Night This will be a quick 30mins aerobic workout inspired by the ‘Greats’ of the 80’s. It will incorporate acerbic movement, 80’s Step Aerobics and some of the old time chain dances. It’s fitness and fun in one! Open gym This is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training. Metafit This is a 30mins bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire! Lets lift This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45mins whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of Barbell and Dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.
