REMAIN BUSHFIRE AWARE OVER THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS Hot and sunny with possible rain is the predicted outlook over the festive period in the Isaac region as local residents are urged to remain vigilant about potential bushfires during their travels. As several fires burn in Queensland and News South Wales and with the current unpredictable weather patterns, Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said this is a timely reminder for residents not to be complacent. “The reality is that we live in an area where more than 90 per cent is drought declared and we need to continue being vigilant and think about our bushfire survival plans at home,” Mayor Baker, who is chair of the Isaac Local Disaster Management Group, said. “Our firefighters, paid and volunteer, do an amazing job risking their lives to protect our community, but we need to help them by preparing our home and educating each other about bushfire awareness. “Fire can travel up to 25 kilometres an hour and send embers flying for kilometres, sparking new fires that severely test local firefighters. “This year, we have already seen the devastating impact of bushfires across Queensland.

“Now’s the time to make sure you and your loved ones are prepared this disaster season. “This is why it’s imperative we do our part around our homes and I would like to acknowledge and thank those residents who have already prepared their homes and reviewed their bushfire survival plans this summer.” Mayor Baker said the Rural Fire Service Queensland’s advice on home preparation is vital. “Tips include clearing leaves, twigs, bark and other debris from the roof and gutters plus around the front and back yard, mowing the lawn regularly and checking the first aid kit is fully stocked,” she said. “For help preparing your home, property and family before a bushfire check out resources available at www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/BushFire_Safety/Pages/ Prepare-for-bushfire-season.aspx - it’s never too late to prepare.” During an emergency or disaster situation, residents are also encouraged to visit Council’s Disaster Dashboard dashboard.isaac.qld.gov.au to access up-to-date weather warnings, emergency news, road conditions, school closures and power outage information.
