Funds help create a better head space for youth
Secondary schools in Isaac will be armed with tools to help students’ combat feelings of anxiety, depression and loneliness. A nationally-recognised mental health foundation - headspace - will kick off a series of workshops to help bolster teaching staff across Isaac. Based in Mackay and covering the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac regions, the Youth and Community Engagement Team from headspace Mackay will tour Middlemount, Clermont, Dysart, Glenden and Moranbah secondary schools to give a helping hand, thanks to the Isaac Regional Charity Fund. The headspace hosted sessions will focus on giving school staff the essential tools to help students cope with difficult situations. The workshops are made possible thanks to nearly $30,000 from the Mayor’s Charity Ball.
Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker, who is the Isaac Regional Charity Fund chair, said mental health and youth suicide prevention is a whole of community issue. “The impacts of youth suicide in Isaac and across the nation are instant, widespread and long-lasting,” Mayor Baker said. “We aim to raise the level of community confidence in mental health literacy. “According to headspace, one in four young Aussies will experience mental health issues and most of them will not seek help. “With these programs, we aim to see an increase in young people seeking help through school guidance officers, counsellors and teaching staff. A reduction in stigma relating to the willingness to discuss mental health issues through the experience of the workshops.”
Wayne Horwood, who is headspace Mackay centre manager, said they will deliver youth and community engagement programs targeting a variety of topics aimed at improving mental health literacy, resilience and help seeking behaviours. “All of these contributing as early intervention strategies in reducing the risk of suicide,” he said. “Directed toward secondary and tertiary teachers, school staff, welfare officers, sporting coaches and community leaders that interact directly with young people between 12 and 25 years old.” Nearly $69,000 was raised for mental health initiatives in Isaac at the 2017 Mayor’s Charity Ball, pictured above. A date will be announced in the near future for the gala 2018 event. The Isaac Regional Charity Fund is a deductible gift recipient, which means it can receive tax-deductible gifts.

School News Clermont State High School SAVE THE DATE This year Clermont State School and Clermont State High School’s introduction of Stymie, an anonymous online bullying reporting site. Rachel Downie from Stymie will come to both schools in Week 2 of Term 1 to educate students on what bullying is and how to report bullying using www.stymie.com.au. GUARDIANS - Get Your Techno Power Back! She will also run an information session for parents and guardians aimed at helping keep children safe online.
Rachel will give you tips on how to manage kids’ devices and which apps can potentially create problems in the lives of students and parents everywhere.
The parent session will be at Clermont State High School at 6pm on January 30, 2018. We encourage all parents and guardians in the community to attend. Please note that students are not permitted to this session.
Public Notice CLERMONT HISTORICAL CENTRE TEMPORARILY CLOSED Isaac Regional Council advises the Clermont Community and visitors that the Clermont Historical Centre is temporarily closed, for its annual maintenance shut-down and preparation for a new exhibition. Celebrating Australian authors
Uniforms hang neatly, books are covered and schoolbags are packed ready for the start of the new school year.
It’s a celebration of Australian authors this month at the Clermont Library.
Children are never too young for membership of the Clermont Library and having Clermont Library membership can help children with their school work, especially assignments. Library membership can help students borrow resources from any Isaac Librarary and gives access to online databases such as The Encyclopedia Britannica Online Student/Junior Library Editions.
Welcome! If you are a new Clermont resident, visit the Clermont Library and enquire about library membership. As well as being able to borrow ‘traditional’ books, library members can also borrow e-books and digital audio books through Bolinda Audio and Overdrive. The library also offers access to public computers, scanning/emailing/photocopying services and more.
Come in and look at the displays featuring Australian authors, both fiction and non-fiction writers. All books included in the displays can be borrowed and you may discover a new ‘favourite’ author.
Summer Reading Club Isaac Libraries are participating in the Summer Reading Club (SRC) which runs until to January 31. Children can register online through the Clermont Library and upon registration, they will receive a Summer Reading Club ‘goodies’ pack and SRC passport. Passports will be stamped upon completion of an activity and children can receive a bonus prize. The 2017 SRC theme is Game On, celebrating the Australian sporting culture, team-mateship and the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Baby Bounce, Storytime, Craft and Rhymetime The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a good way to connect with other parents with young children. Rhymetime and Craft This is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs.
Baby Bounce Come along on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years. Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song.
Storytime and Craft Time See you at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to prep age. Bookings are essential please phone 4983 4746 or email Clermont.Library@isaac. qld.gov.au

Is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane, simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. MetaPWR MetaPWR is a fast moving circuit, using moves that need strength, speed and power. All MetaPWR workouts use the entire body,involving your upper and lower body and core muscles. Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so the more muscles you work the more calories you burn. The more calories you burn, the more productive your workouts will be and the faster you will lose fat. Circuit training This is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using high-intensity/low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance. An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness. Lets lift This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minutes whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels. Metafit This is a 30 minutes bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire.
