AGRICULTURAL EVENT SHOWCASES BEST IN THE REGION Hundreds of people gathered at the Hoch and Wilkinson 6th annual Clermont Beef Expo and Trade Display last week to see some of the Isaac region’s best stock on show.

“Council was proud to support the Clermont Beef Expo and Trade Display once again this year and I would like to thank the organisers, graziers and exhibitors for another successful and enjoyable event.”

Held at the Clermont Saleyards, the event featured a presentation of 1200 head of prime and store cattle, 50 trade displays and an informative and engaging forum session with the intriguing title Cowboys and Itchy Bums.

The lively lunchtime forum session was led by Clermont’s vet Dr Alan Guilfoyle, general practitioner Dr Sarah McLay and Sunshine Coast-based public health vet Dr Guy Weerasinghe, speaking on the risks of transmittable diseases between animals and humans.

The local Country Women’s Association kicked off the day’s events with a hearty buffet breakfast, raising $1300 for the Queensland Drought Appeal.

Ironically, muddy puddles dotting the Showground precinct after heavy rainfall the evening prior made for a welcome change and did nothing to dampen cattle sales or the spirits of those in attendance.

Councillor Lyn Jones, who attended the event on behalf of Council, was honoured to present the Isaac Regional Council Trophy and $5000 prize to the Grand Champion Exhibit winners.

“Congratulations to the Finger family from Hillview who took out the grand prize for a third consecutive year with their impressive 100-day grain fed bullocks,” Cr Jones said.

“The finest of cattle were certainly on show at the Expo and an increase in the number of trade displays showcased at the event was encouraging to see.

Mayor Baker said the significant agricultural event was an important date on the community’s calendar with agriculture playing a vital part in Isaac’s economy.

“The beef industry is valued at around $212 million annually with the agriculture sector directly employing 5.4% of the Isaac region’s workforce,” Mayor Baker said.

“Council is incredibly proud to have sponsored the Clermont Beef Expo and Trade Display through the Isaac Community Grants program.”

The next sale at the Clermont Saleyards will take place on Wednesday, November 14.

PUBLIC NOTICES CAUTION MOTORISTS - CATTLE DROVING ON HUNTLEY ROAD TO GREGORY HIGHWAY, CLERMONT Isaac Regional Council wishes to advise motorists that there are 1,450 head of cattle travelling along Huntley Road to the Gregory Highway, Clermont.

The droving of the cattle commenced in our region on Monday, October 29 and will remain droving until Monday, November 12.

The drovers have the necessary permits to be able to carry out this droving expedition.

All traffic travelling these roads are advised to be aware of the signage, slow down and take care around the cattle.

PARTIAL TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF CENTENARY PARK, CLERMONT - UPDATE #2 Isaac Regional Council advises that due to the expansion of the flying fox colony the temporary fencing to isolate the roost will be extended from:

Thursday, October 25 Until further notice This means that part of the pathway adjacent to Hoods Lagoon will be partially closed until further notice.

Majority of the park, including the shade structure and toilets, is unaffected by this temporary closure. The roost is away from residential backyards, in the trees on the south bank of Hoods Lagoon (corner of Capella and Lime streets).

Council will continue to monitor the flying fox roost and will provide the community with updates once a course of action is established.

Workers have trimmed some trees in the park to try and discourage more roosting in the area.

Council will monitor and assess the colony and continue discussions with ecologists as to possible management options.

Residents are reminded that it is against the law to harm or disturb a flying fox roost, and unplanned and unauthorised actions can impact on you, your neighbours and your community. Council recommends that residents undertake proactive vegetation management at properties to prevent flying foxes from camping in their backyards. The best way to do this is to trim or remove potential camp trees, commonly mature mango, fig, or poinciana, little red flying foxes can also camp in eucalyptus, palm and other trees.

Council thanks residents for their understanding and apologises for any inconvenience caused.

If you are considering undertaking some form of further training/study/education, let’s explore some methods of learning so you can make choices suitable for you.

Astronauts also train extensively using simulators to imitate the challenges and micro-gravity experienced on a space mission. You get to ‘experience’ real situations without putting yourself and others at risk.

Web-based training programs

The forms of training with technology are almost unlimited. Learners benefit from being in their own environment and have the benefit of learning at their own pace.

2. Simulators Simulators are used to imitate real work experiences.

Most simulators are very expensive but for certain jobs, like learning to drive a truck or fly a 747, they are indispensable.

On-the-job training gives employees motivation to start the job. Some reports indicate that people learn more efficiently if they learn hands-on, rather than listening to an instructor. However, this method might not be for everyone, as it could be very stressful.

COUNCIL NOTCHES UP A WIN FOR RESOURCE COMMUNITIES Isaac region’s campaign for a change to government funding methodologies to recognise both resident and serviced populations in resource communities has taken a step forward, winning the support of councils at last week’s Local Government Association of Queensland annual conference.

“This is a win for pure people power and I thank our council colleagues from across Queensland for their support. As a collective, we can be a powerful voice for change,” Mayor Baker said.

Mayor Baker said present funding methodologies did not take account of non-resident populations, such as fly-in/fly-out workers, and change was needed to recognise both the resident and serviced population in regional communities which hosted such workforces.

The Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) is the peak representative body for local councils and its members met in Brisbane this week to set the organisation’s policy platform for the forthcoming year.

“In Isaac we have a permanent population of about 21,000, but on any given day an additional 10,500 workers are also living in temporary accommodation and camps in or near our communities,” she said.

Mayor Anne Baker said Isaac region had won the support of the conference’s voting delegates on three motions put forward by Council: •

A review of funding for communities that permanently house fly-in, fly-out/drive-in, driveout workforces, so that it is based on both resident and non-resident populations.

•

To advocate to the State Government to engage with eligible councils before making changes to the eligibility criteria for funding under the Building our Regions (BoR) program.

•

“For every two residents we have an additional ‘serviced’ resident who is not counted for the purposes of calculating government funding.

“That’s essentially a funding shortfall of 33% which places affected communities in a position of disadvantage.

“This issue needs to be addressed if we want sustainable regional resource communities. It is fundamentally an issue of fairness and equity.”

An amendment to the Environmental Protection Act 1994 (Qld) allowing residents to operate generators 24 hours per day during disaster events.

OBSERVING REMEMBRANCE DAY Sunday, November 11 marks a significant milestone in world history when communities around Australia and across the globe will pause at 11am to observe Remembrance Day and celebrate the Centenary of the Armi stice that bought an end to the First World War. The Armistice was signed at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 to end World War One.

Children can read a picture book on line while listening to the author.

You can browse by storyteller or author/illustrator and watch short films to meet the author behind many of the books in the Story Box Library.

FIGHT CLUB JIU JITSU Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art specialising in submission grappling. It is a non-striking sport that promotes fitness, self-confidence, respect, flexibility and teaches self defence strategies.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes have now started for Adults and Kids (8+).

Both Gi and no-Gi classes are being offered.

GUT AND BUTT BLAST: is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane, simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps.

While using various muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time, functional fitness exercises also emphasise core stability.

STRETCH CLASS Improve the flexibility of your joints and muscles with our stretch classes. Stretching is a vital component in any fitness regime, whether you’re a fitness newbie or a professional level athlete, it can boost the effectiveness of your workout routine.

THUMP A 1 hour boxing for fitness class, boxing equipment is provided (gloved, focus pads, kick shields, etc). Inners must be work, these can be purchased from reception for $5 previous to beginning the session.

VIRTUAL RIP A high intensity strength conditioning class using barbell and light dumbbell weights. 45 minutes – 1 hour in duration.

VIRTUAL CYCLE CHALLENGE Revolution by group Rx is a cycling program that brings the outdoor ride – inside. Interval bases cadence training takes your classes through sprints, hill and mountains, to achieve results and personal goals.

Revolution is a 60-minute cycling program tailor-made for anyone who can ride a bike. This class is capped at 10 participants.

KANGA TRAINING Kanga training is a complete workout during which both cardiovascular endurance/flexibility and muscular capacity/strength are enhanced. Unlike traditional exercise classes, new mums need not worry about finding a babysitter or minding an unsettled baby during class because the babies are worn on them and get to be part of the action!
