HANG ON, HELP IS ON ITS WAY! AUSSIE LEGEND LEADS ISAAC EVENT An Australian rock legend and Queensland Music Festival are set to raise their voices for positive men’s mental health through song with vocally sharp Isaac region singers as choral support.

With a career spanning more than five decades, Australian music legend Glenn Shorrock has teamed up with Queensland Music Festival and Isaac Regional Council to present a free concert at Moranbah Town Square on July 18 from 6pm.

Moranbah’s concert is part of the Queensland Music Festival’s national choral initiative to open a dialogue around mental health, particularly for men and boys.

Acting Mayor Kelly Vea Vea said Council is very proud to partner again with Queensland Music Festival to present Help is on its Way in Moranbah.

“Queensland Music Festival’s 2017 outdoor spectacular, The Power Within, activated community choirs in the Isaac especially in Clermont and Moranbah,” Cr Vea Vea said.

“Around 150 singers from our region have been practising for months to learn the choral arrangement for Glenn Shorrock’s powerful anthem, Help Is on Its Way. “These enthusiastic singers will have the unique opportunity of performing with Glenn Shorrock during his finale.

“It is also a great opportunity to use music to highlight the importance of mental health. It’s not always obvious that someone may be struggling.”

“It’s vital that we all understand, and share the message, that mental health issues are common, they are treatable, and help and support is available.

The Help is on its Way Project, developed by Queensland Music Festival Artistic Director Katie Noonan, offers an opportunity to join a national initiative fostering a dialogue around mental health, raising awareness of available services and encouraging help-seeking behaviours, particularly for our men and boys.

“I truly believe that anyone with a voice can sing,” Katie Noonan said.

“Help Is on Its Way is an example of the role music can play in giving awareness to important issues in our society.

“Through collective experiences like singing together, we can bring communities closer, building empathy, friendship and a shared understanding and support for one another.”

Help Is on Its Way is presented by Queensland Music Festival, Isaac Regional Council, Queensland Government and BHP and supported by Brisbane Airport Corporation, Australia Council for the Arts, Tim Fairfax Family Foundation, Anglo America, Moranbah Community Workers Club, Veracity, Pembroke Resources, Black Dog, Roses in the Ocean and Royal Flying Doctors Service.

This project has also been assisted by the Queensland Government, and the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

ANGLICAN CAR BOOT SALE contributed by Margaret Henn It’s time to start cleaning out those cupboards again ready for the annual Anglican Car Boot Sale to be held on Saturday July 20 at the Anglican Hall in Daintree Street.

If you have wares you would like to donate they will be gratefully received.

The event will be similar to the previous Monster Car Boot Sales. Spaces will be available for a fee of $10 in the grounds of the Anglican Hall where you may set up a stall to sell your wares. This may be done from the boot of your car or from a table etc.

As well there will be a ‘give away’ table where interesting oddments are yours for the taking.

If individuals or groups have anything they wish to sell this is your opportunity.

Last time the range of goods was amazing and we are already assembling an interesting collection.

Morning tea will be available all from 9.30am.

Remember ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ and it’s a wonderful chance to clean out your cupboards.

PUBLIC NOTICES CLERMONT WASTE WATER MAINS CLEANING AND CCTV RECOMMENCED Clermont residents are advised Council have recommenced waste water mains cleaning and CCTV inspection throughout the township as part of its commitment to improve waste water removal service quality and delivery.

WHAT ARE WE DOING? •

Council has engaged contractor Relining Solutions to undertake specialised cleaning of waste water mains in Clermont and conduct CCTV inspection of all waste water mains in the township.

The Relining Solutions cleaning process involves cleaning waste water mains using steam cleaning technology.

Once the mains are clean a CCTV camera will be used to conduct inspections of all waste water mains.

WHEN IS IT HAPPENING? To minimise disruption to households these works will be undertaken:

WHAT TO EXPECT •

Council will be working closely with our contractor to minimise any impacts of this work on your daily routine.

There is a possibility that there may be some water escape from the bowl of your toilet. It is advised that a 5 to 10 kg weight be placed on top of your toilet lid to minimise any affects.

• A hand delivered notice of when your street will be done will be issued 2 days prior to any cleaning activity this will also include if any vehicle access to your property may be required.

• To ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians, appropriate signage will be in place, where necessary.

REPORT A PROBLEM We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience and understanding as this important work is carried out to maintain the quality of your waste water removal and treatment network.

WATER METER READS ACROSS ISAAC - JUNE AND JULY Isaac Regional Council’s water meter readers will begin in June to record the water consumption for upcoming water notices.

To help ensure the charges are accurate, efficient and reliable, the manual water meter read project will take place across Isaac between the hours of:

6am to 6pm to Friday, July 12 The program will not be operating during public holidays and weekends.

This is in preparation for the water notices to be issued for the period of January 15, 2019 to June 30, 2019.

This notice is expected to be sent to ratepayers in August.

All meter-reading contractors will carry official Council identification.

Authorisation to undertake the water meter reads is under Section 37 of the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008.

Council has MiWater, a website where residents can sign up to receive water consumption information.

Residents can set email and SMS alerts and be notified of water leaks and high consumption within days of occurrence, see www.isaac.qld.gov.au/miwater.

2019-20 BUDGET: FOCUSED ON THE FUNDAMENTALS

INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES & ACTIVE, ATTRACTIVE COMMUNITIES THERESA CREEK DAM: $1 million has been allocated to improve the sustainability of Clermont’s water supply.

DIVISION 1 - CLERMONT RURAL & GLENDEN In 2019-20, Council will invest $1 million to improve the sustainability of the water supply at Theresa Creek Dam. This will deliver stage one of Council’s water storage project, funded with assistance of $900,000 from the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program towards the $1.5 million cost of stages one and two. Stage one will increase storage capacity and remove the build-up of silt at the water intake tower.

Theresa Creek Dam is also seeing an investment of $60,000 to refurbish amenities, ensuring the dam continues to be an aquatic drawcard for locals and visitors alike.

The $16 million Pasha Road upgrade will be completed in 2019-20, with the State Government providing a further $13 million to pave and seal remaining gravel sections of the road between the intersection with Eaglefield Road to the

intersection with Riverside Mine Road. A further $800,000 from the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program will construct 18 drainage structures on the route.

Rural roads in the Division 1 come away with money for improvements in 2019-20, with $245,000 committed to Glenden roads and an additional $1.065 million for rural roads across Isaac. Pioneer Road, Bulliwallah Road, Laglan Road and also winners in the $3.3 million Isaac regional rural gravel resheeting program. $110,000 has been allocated to rejuvenate Glenden’s pool, while new shade covers would be installed over play equipment in the town centre.

In Glenden, Council will be installing litter fencing around the landfill at a cost of $98,000 to improve the amenity of the area.

Council has worked hard to deliver a 2019-20 Budget we believe reflects the best interests of the communities of our region. It is a Budget which demonstrates an appreciation of the cost of living pressures affecting Isaac households.

This year’s Budget reinforces our continued focus on the fundamentals of good local government; delivering the critical Infrastructure and Services our region needs to support Active and Attractive Communities.

Our financial settings and programs for the coming year form the basis of a truly ISAAC budget.

Importantly, this Budget continues Council’s commitment to sustainable and prudent financial management. Independent assessment of Council’s fiscal position by the Queensland Audit Office continues to rank Isaac Regional Council as having a low risk of financial sustainability concerns.

In 2019-20, the increase in general rates and utility charges(waste, sewerage and disaster management) will be held at just 1.5%.

This year our $51.4 million capital budget will be directed to improving infrastructure and enhancing liveability across the region.

Our expenditure will include: $27.4 million for roads and drainage, $6.2 million for water projects, $5.8 million for wastewater services, $3.2 million to waste management, $5 million to community facilities and $833,000 to parks and recreation.

BABY BOUNCE, STORY TIME AND CRAFT CELEBRATING NAIDOC WEEK NAIDOC Week is held from 7 to 14 July and is a celebration of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

Children are invited to come along to the Clermont Library on Thursday, July 11 between 2pm to 3pm and help paint an emu. The emu is one of several large, wooden Australian animals that will be made into an artwork for NAIDOC Week.

We are also celebrating NAIDOC Week with Indigenous Art inspired craft sessions during the school holidays.

Children will also design and paint their own art piece to keep.

SPOTLIGHT ON JANE HARPER Jane Harper is the author of international bestsellers The Dry, Force of Nature and the Lost Man. She was born in the United Kingdom and moved to Australia when she was eight years old.

Harper lived in Victoria and gained Australian citizenship, but returned to the UK with her family when she was a teenager.

Harper worked as a journalist for several years before moving back to Australia in 2008.

She worked in journalism and in 2014, submitted a short story which was one of 12 chosen for the Big Issue’s annual Fiction Edition.

This inspired Harper to pursue creative writing.

The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a great way to connect with other parents with young children.
