Experience this rich, diverse and dramatic history at the Clermont Historic Centre’s free community day from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, July 1.
Clermont Historical Centre caretaker Kevin Fry has been working with renowned expert Robert Kluck to partially restore the engine to its former glory.
Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said the steaming of the legendary traction steam engine which is key to Clermont’s heritage will be the feature of the day.
Cr Baker said there will be much more to see including an extensive collection of outdoor exhibits.
“The historic Aveling & Porter steam engine, was one of two that moved Clermont after the 1916 Flood,” Cr Baker said. “This will be its first public steaming in more than two decades.” Cr Baker said visitors can also view the commemorative 1916 Flood exhibition A Flood of Memories. “Relive stories of courage, heroism and tragedy from one of the deadliest floods in Australian history,” Cr Baker said. More than 60 people lost their lives in floodwaters after a tropical cyclone crossed through the Whitsunday passage in December 1916.
“One special exhibit is the Abor Creek Bridge. It was sabotaged by shearer’s during the 1891 Shearer’s Strike,” Cr Baker said. “They were attempting to stop soldiers armed with machine guns and rifles travelling by train to Clermont.” The Clermont Historical Centre is on the Gregory Highway, about 2km from Clermont.
