1939년 부터 2004년까지 역으 로서의 역할을 하고 2010 경춘 선 복선이 생긴 후 해당 경춘선 영역이 폐선됨.

폐선된 부지는 한동안 공터로 남아 지역주민들의 통근길, 등 하교길, 그리고 텃밭으로 활용 되었다.

2010년 폐선된 경춘선 광운대 역 ~ 서울시계 구간의 공원조 성 계획은 오랫동안 기차소음으 로 고생하던 주민들에게 반가운 소식이 되었다.

2013년 청년들을 위한 행복주 택 계획안이 나오면서 경춘선 공원계획에서 해당 부지만 국 토부로 넘어가게 되었다.

지역주민들의 강한반발로 결국 행복주택사업은 무산되었미만 앞으로 대지를 어떻게 할 것인 가에 대한 대책은 마련되지 않 아 당분간 계속 공터로 남아있 을 것으로 예상된다.

The original Gongneong Happy Housing was planned as a dormitory targeting nearby college students. It is possible that the old locals did not have the will to embrace the younger residents.

Considering this issue, and that Nowon-gu has the highest proportion of elderly citizens in Seoul, I propose a rental housing for the elderly as an alternative for the Happy Housing plan.

Currently the empty site is used by local residents as family farms. Three pathways are naturally formed by commuting students and workers.Although it is a wasteland, the site is well used.

However, no one is managing the site, therefore giving the site an unclean, unsafe atmosphere with trash and parking problems.

My proposal makes public parking space underground, thus freeing the ground level and connecting the site with the railway park.

Typical apartment buildings stack housing units vertically and residents approach the ground level through elevators cores. These create fast circulations in and out of the building, making it difficult for residents to interact with different people or programs on other floors. In the other hand, a horizontal-plane housing slows the circulation in and out of the building and provides the potential for much interaction and many experiences.

The plan consists not only of the senior housing and its service program but also of facilities for the local community.

Based on a survey conducted on what programs the locals want on the site, my proposal includes a library and an art gallery. The library can be approached from the railway park and from the senior housing facility, making it the interacting point. This is one of the attempts to change the unsociable character of senior housing.

The entire facility is designed to be low in height. This way, neither the sunlight nor the view from the apartments on the north side are blocked. Also, it is an attempt to create horizontal-plane housing instead of typical vertical-plane housing and at the same time to create a park which the local residents would want over the facility.

The ruins of St. Paul’s is the ultimate tourist spot in Macau and it is located on the boundary between the tourist and the residential area.

The main concept of this project is to create a material, structural contrast to the cathedral and the surrounding city. This will symbolize the burnt down original cathedral while transcending its history and showing its new possibilities.

After a fire destroyed the original St. Paul’s Cathedral in Macau leaving the southern stone facade standing, now is a small museum of Catholic relics discovered during an excavation later on. The rest of the space is an empty space filled with tourists. In the city context, one can see old worn out textures on buildings due to rust, peeled paint, traces of demolished structures, etc. These are traces of time, history.

While each linear slab indicates an old monument of Macau, the structure will act as a obsevation platform as well as providing exhibition and event spaces. Lowering the ground level attracts residents, thus creating the possibility of community space, which the city lacks.

Platform / Circus The membrane structure provides a sense of enclosed space while creating various dynamic spaces. It is divided in overlaping 3 parts, permitting the prevailing wind in Macau to flow through the gap between them. This wind flowing underneth the structure allows the tensile structure to tolerate wind pressure and to provide natural air circulation.

Each floor consists of a concrete slab and truss structure. Cables from the core structure support them. The trusses beneath the slabs can be used not only for supporting the slabs but also for attaching equipment such as a truss stage. Lighting, speakers, artwork, etc., can hang from the truss structure, providing whatever is needed for certain programs.

The master concept is to arrange residential units to connect the two roads with extreme level difference with what are like huge stairs. In three dimensions, the site allows the rooftops to have various levels.

These various levels of rooftops, or squares, act as the main circulation space and public space for the community. Studios are placed on these squares to act as Creative Seeds.

This arrangement creates more efficient use of rooftop space than the original context. Also it allows more social interaction within the community. This concept can be applied in other sites with extreme gradients.

Spaces between the studios on the main commercial street act as a visual attraction and as entrances to the roofs. These spaces could be occupied and used by studio owners or residents. They can be used as work space, outdoor market space, places to grow plants, or as storage space.

Space Before designing a medieval monastery, we ventured into exploring space by making scale less models from plaster.

We explored how light, time, and movement interact. This appreciation of space will be applied in our spiritual retreat.

In a spiritual retreat where there is no electricity or modern technology, natural light is the best element to use to create a holy atmosphere. By controlling the direction, form, texture, and quantity of light, one can create a diversity of spaces.

Site The site is an island between North Korea and Incheon.

A field trip was required to find the right island and the right spot on the island for our project. The chosen site is a quiet, isolated shore on the north side of Jangbong Island, which can be reached by ferry from Yeongjong Island. The shore features a shingle beach, behind which the mountain is steep and rocky.

Chapel of the sea

The journey to the retreat itself has its significance. You must take a ferry to the island, then cross the entire island from the harbor to the site. Once you reach the isolated shore where the road ends, you walk along the shingles to the spiritual retreat. The retreat walks you along the paths carved into the mountain, with their views of the sea and the masses floating on the columns before you eventually reach the building. This scene gives a feeling of sacred pressure and tension making one ready for the spiritual retreat.

Chapel of the mountain

Form Part of the mountain behind the shore is carved out, such that two big spaces are formed, which face the sea. This becomes the space that will embrace the retreat. Along these bowl shaped spaces, several pathways are carved. A number of pillars are placed in the base space and main masses settle on these pillars.

There are more pillars than necessary which makes the space filled with contrast of light and shadow.

The spiritual retreat consists of three chapels, one carved inside the mountain (chapel of the mountain), one floating on the columns (chapel of the dark), and one on the shore where the tide comes in and out (chapel of the sea).

Site

The site is in the area of Samcheong-dong, which is home to distinctive cafes, shops and galleries. There are roughly forty galleries displaying pieces from professional artists. There is a drop-off throughout the site like a small cliff. This wall gives the two artists the opportunity to do public wall paintings on the site in addition to dwelling in it. From the public perspective, the house shows a series of three planes: the entrance wall with paintings, the cubic facade of the house , and cliff with paintings. This series of patchworks faces the small square in the middle of Samcheong-dong, attracting and stimulating the public.

The house allows the two artists to share core circulation space and workshop space. The living areas are separate, each residentials are designed to reflect the artist’s life and work. The workshop can be used as a gallery open to public.
