Ross Myers

It is with both pride and humility that I acknowledge this year, 2014, as the 75th birthday of a dream started by my father and grandfather named Allan A. Myers and Son. Their dream was simple: Through hard work, always delivering what they promised, and an uncompromising standard of mutual respect for all parties involved, they set out on a journey to improve their lives, and those of the men and women who entrusted their lives to that dream.

The pride comes from the belief that 75 years later we are still focused on the same journey. The humility

comes from the realization that I am just a small part of it. The real credit goes to the men and women in our organization, past and present, who relentlessly work at being better today than they were yesterday, and who never give up until the task is complete.

I also understand that without the relationships we have built with our customers and external partners, this 75th celebration would not be possible. The loyalty and commitment by all to our success is overwhelming to me, and words cannot express my heartfelt appreciation.

American Infrastructure’s Director of Career Development and Training, Jamie Leitch, has been awarded the Best Paper Award by the International Society of Knowledge, Innovation and Enterprise (ISKIE). The worldwide organization recognized Ms. Leitch and her co-author Larry Keiser, director of special projects and certification officer at Drexel University’s School of Education, with the award at the 2013 KIE conference in London, England, in September.

AI CEO Loans Toy Antique CAT Dozer to Caterpillar CEO at Peoria Headquarters A rare, restored c. 1950 Caterpillar toy bulldozer, which had been cleverly converted into a glass-top coffee table at the time of its restoration, spent many years in the executive office area of American Infrastructure’s, Worcester, PA, headquarters. AI CEO Ross Myers, who as a boy enjoyed playing on the dozer when it was new, recently had the conversation piece delivered to Caterpillar headquarters in Peoria, IL, as a long-term loan to friend and Caterpillar CEO Doug Oberhelman. Now, a new audience can enjoy seeing it in his office reception area for many years to come.

Below is the text of a framed memo, which stands atop the table.

“This toy dozer was given to my father, Allan C. Myers, in 1950 by Dawson Ransome of Giles and Ransome, who was a friend of my father. The story goes that CAT gave one dozer to each of their dealers. Dawson did not have a son, so he gave his to my dad.

The dozer was my prized possession from 1950 to 1958/59, during which time I played in my parents’ yard pushing and moving dirt and sand, and in general digging up and making a mess of the yard. The toy was put away when I got too big to play with it and brought out again for my sons, Brock, Aaron and Seth, to landscape our yard, just as I had done as a boy. Once my boys outgrew the toy, it was restored and turned into a coffee table.

The dozer came with a starter motor and had a 6-volt battery in the front. It moved forward and backward, you could steer it and move the blade up and down. This toy provided hours of entertainment and wonderful childhood memories. I am happy to loan the dozer to my good friend, Doug Oberhelman, for display in the Caterpillar Executive Office.”

News AI Receives Two National Awards for Excellence in Risk Management has been a cornerstone in a reduction of its injury and incident rate of more than 50 percent in the past four years.

American Infrastructure has received recognition from two national publications in 2013 for excellence in its occupational safety initiatives and particularly for the company’s Home Safe Tonight program, which

Recognition came first from National Underwriter Property and Casualty magazine, which gave American Infrastructure its Award for Excellence in Workers’ Compensation Management and featured the company in its August issue. In the November issue of Risk & Insurance magazine, AI was named the winner of the Theodore Roosevelt Workers’ Compensation and Disability Management Award (Teddy Award).

Both awards recognized how the company fosters a culture of safety that is not fueled by a desire to simply comply with safety regulations to contain Workers’ Compensation costs, but to build a culture of genuine care, concern and respect for each other. Property and Casualty quoted AI Risk Manager Bryan Schwartz, who captures the company’s philosophy by saying, “We believe that all injuries and occupational injuries are entirely preventable. It is inconceivable for any of us to believe

that a commitment to any other standard of operation is acceptable.”

Jim Thorpe/Lehigh River Bridge Project to Launch Work will begin soon on a new bridge project over the Lehigh River in Jim Thorpe, PA. The project involves the construction of a new, four-span, continuous steel plate girder bridge that will be located approximately 900 feet upstream of the existing bridge. It will remain in use for the duration of the construction and will be demolished when the new bridge is complete. The bridge carries PA SR 903 from

Jim Thorpe, which will connect directly with US 209 on the southwest side of the river. A total of four rail lines, including one Norfolk Southern and three Reading Blue Mountain and Northern tracks, will pass under the bridge on both sides of the river. The cost will be $28.2 million, and it will be completed by July 2017.

The bridge is 961 feet long, and there will be more than 7,400 cubic yards of concrete,

4,645,000 lbs. of fabricated structural steel and 1,058,000 lbs. of reinforcing steel used to complete the project. Three MSE walls will also need to be constructed. There will be more than 37,000 square feet of wall panels to install, with one of the walls being more than 1,220 feet in length. And 145,000 tons of various types of stone will be used for backfill, slope protection and paving. This will be a signature project for the

area, with the bridge crossing the Lehigh River approximately 80 feet above the water surface.

The bridge will have aesthetically shaped pier stems with stone facing, and stain on the piers, stems and walls to reflect the natural colors of the surrounding area.

Project Update Innovative Soil Testing Method Used for the US 460 Bypass Project US 460 Mobility Partners (a joint venture of American Infrastructure and Ferrovial Agroman) has implemented a test embankment program, an innovative soil testing methodology to determine the performance of the site soils over time under test conditions. This progressive testing

methodology, which was recommended by Ferrovial engineers, is the first of its kind for a roadway project in Virginia, implemented here for the Petersburg-toSuffolk Route 460 bypass.

amount of settlement very challenging. Understanding these key factors is necessary to define the performance of future embankments constructed for the project.

When complete, the test embankment structure being installed in Wakefield, VA, will be approximately 300 feet square

The composition of the soil in the southeastern Virginia coastal plain compels a test embankment installation. The

region’s soil is characterized by poorly to well-sorted, unconsolidated marine and fluvial sediments, varying from soft saturated clays to gravels.

Preparing a test embankment provides the necessary investigation and analytics required prior to building the actual embankments for the new roadway.

The large embankment widths needed to support the new roadway, on the order of 300 feet, and the high stresses generated due to weight, will impart large stresses hundreds of feet into the ground. The test embankment will allow engineers to measure soil weight bearing, underground pressures, settlement, drainage, safety and stresses over an approximate six-month period. Actual measurements will be made at various intervals to document performance, and the deformation magnitude and rate.

Embankment nears its final height and will remain in place for six months as engineers gather data to calculate the long-term performance of the soil in many categories of measurement.

These measurements will promote the long-term prediction of soil performance. The results and predictions made through these measurements are used to avoid potential challenges in construction such as: • Inefficient scheduling of construction activities caused by unexpected delays in embankment settlement • Delayed opening of the roadway •

Project Report West Hills Business Park Kutztown, PA

A Company Core Competency Highlighted by Large Pennsylvania Site Project After more than seven decades of construction experience and diversification into larger and evermore-complex projects, there still remains something about “big dirt” that takes us “home.” While “large site-development project” might be another way of saying it, it’s still “big dirt” to us and probably always will be. In the earliest days of the company, when hauling led to an expansion into excavation, site development became its first construction specialty, and it is still a mainstay today.

It occupies 250 acres adjacent to Route I-78, a major east-west artery linking the region to northern New Jersey and New York City. The site

work was begun in April of 2013 and is targeted for completion by the end of the year, the work undertaken by Allan A. Myers, the company’s Pennsylvania business unit.

This project represents “big dirt” in every sense, and the numbers tell the story.

Approximately 1.3 million cubic yards of dirt were moved to prepare the area for the construction of the building pad and the other construction operations that would follow. By utilizing day and night shifts, crews moved an average of 80,000 cubic yards per week. Some cuts and fills were in close proximity, so much of the dirt could be pushed to where it had to be rather than hauled.

The fast, efficient and safe movement of material took place in the midst of ongoing work by subcontractors as well as other work being performed by our own crews.

Also required was the blasting of 500,000 cubic yards of stone, of which

200,000 tons were crushed on-site for 2A and other materials, which were used for the building pad and stoning of parking lots.

More than 30,000 lineal feet of pipe were placed, and 10 large underground infiltration basins requiring 33,000 tons of stone were constructed.

For site crews, it doesn’t get much better than this, and the owner gets safe crews who love their work.

No matter which side of the transaction you’re on, that’s big.

Project Report “It’s nice to travel into a different state and find a first-time contractor who actually stepped up, did what they said they would do, drove our schedule by moving hills out of the way and paving the path to the building site before snow became an issue, consistently overcoming issues before they became obstacles. The crews were all professional in works and manner, with the supervision staff always looking out ahead to keep the work flowing. Tasty Baking Company WWTP Philadelphia, PA The Tasty Baking Company is a Philadelphia institution, founded in 1914 by a baker and an egg salesman who sold $28 worth of product on their first day in business. By 1918, annual sales had grown to $1 million. After nearly 100 years, Tastykakes are still a snack favorite throughout the East Coast and the Southeast.

The company recently undertook the expansion of its Philadelphia operations with the construction of a new pretreatment wastewater treatment plant adjacent to its existing bakery facility. The new plant is designed to meet the city’s pretreatment limits for discharging process wastewater. An existing temporary pretreatment plant was already in place when construction began in April 2013, and the transition to the new plant is to be executed within an allowable shutdown window of no more than 14 days.

Space limitations required a compact design, and the new plant will occupy just 3,000 square feet of space, with its capacity rated at 0.4 million gallons per day.

Constructing the plant in the soft soil conditions of the site called for a drivenpile foundation using 150 timber piles. More than 600 cubic yards of structural concrete, a structural steel superstructure and custom precast tilt-up panel walls define the space that will hold the mechanical and process components.

tion. For example, time and money were saved by changing the supportedslab formwork design to a stay-in-place geofoam system. Other early precautions included a third-party utilities survey to locate the owner’s utilities not found by the 1-Call System.

The most popular FAQ about working at Tasty Baking Company is whether or not free samples were included in the contract negotiation. Sadly, no, but we’ll know better next time.

I-95, it happens to be the busiest rest stop in America, with nearly 3 million customers per year. If you ask anyone who travels by car or truck in the northeast whether they have ever

stopped at the Maryland House, the answer is invariably yes. A combination of the right products, services and location has made it the success that it is.

Maryland House, built in 1963, and its sister facility 14 miles to the north, Chesapeake House, built in 1975, are unique in that they are the only rest stops in the country that operate on a toll-free interstate

responsible for the grounds, while Areas USA, a private company, operates the facilities, which combined generate approximately $40 million in revenue annually.

An 18-month total reconstruction of the Maryland House began in the fall of 2012, when it was closed to traffic and demolition of the entire site was started. The project is Maryland’s first P3 (Public/ Private Partnership), with Areas USA and the Maryland Transportation Authority acting as joint venture partners, and with Clark Construction as the general contractor.

American Infrastructure fits into the plan as the site contractor for the project, having worked successfully with Clark on other previous projects.

Nearby companyowned asphalt plants provided competitive advantage

and helped control the schedule.

As the work nears completion, the numbers stack up like this: Demolition included 10,000 lineal feet of utilities, 30,000 lineal feet of curb and gutter, and 17,500 square yards of concrete sidewalk/flatwork. New work included 14,000 lineal feet of utility installation, 40 bioretention/rain garden facilities, 7,190 tons of graded aggregate base subgrade, 5,500 square yards of soil cement subgrade, 32,500 lineal feet of curb and gutter, and 35,000 tons of asphalt paving.

As the work concludes at Maryland House, the same demolition and reconstruction process is scheduled to begin at Chesapeake House, where we will again perform the site work for another Maryland travelers’ landmark.

Project Report Pennsylvania Turnpike Paving

also came from the same plant, which produced and delivered approximately 900 to 1,000 tons of 9.5mm material each shift. Our laydown crew has installed more than 17,000 tons of 9.5mm to date on the project, while far exceeding the ridability and compaction specifications for all tons installed.

Montgomery County, PA

Pennsylvania Turnpike Milling and Resurfacing Performed Entirely at Night Night paving on major highways is often required so that traffic flow at the busiest times of day is not slowed or interrupted.

Within AI’s geographical footprint, which includes four of the most densely populated states in the country, there are enough miles of major highway needing repair that night paving operations are a frequent condition for most of our crews, and for most of the year. A recent paving project on the Pennsylvania Turnpike is an example.

The milling and paving of the Turnpike between mileposts 334 and 340 in the Philadelphia suburbs brought with it the usual array of challenges, particularly in the areas of traffic management, safe work operations and linear flow of the work. From the moment the milling machine started grind-

ing away the old surface, a smooth sequence of events unfolded as the experienced team put their years of knowledge into getting the job done safely and on schedule.

Carefully preplanned and executed traffic management plans set up the team for success, so that successive sections of the center lane of the six-lane roadway could be milled and paved each night. Four inches of material were removed and replaced with 19mm asphalt supplied by Independence Construction Materials (ICM), a company-owned asphalt plant in nearby Devault, PA. All told, the crews and plant handled more than 2,000 tons of millings and asphalt in a seven-hour time frame each night, night in and night out. Our paving crew installed the asphalt at a rate of 225 tons per

hour, while exceeding all specifications. In-house material and transportation resources provided

by ICM made material control and meeting a tough schedule a very achievable task.

When the 1.5-inch wearing course was put in place later in the same job, the material

Thirty-nine late-season milling and paving shifts and 35,000 tons of ICM asphalt set up the job for on-time completion of Stage I in 2013, with project completion set for spring 2014. All work to date was accomplished with no incidents or injuries and is an example of safety, efficiency and just plain hard work coming together for a great result.

Environmental Project Report Devault Quarry Devault, PA

Devault Quarry Opens New Clean Fill Reclamation Facility Clean fill operations by Devault Partners, L.P., were begun in August 2013 at Devault Quarry, a granite quarry in suburban Philadelphia. The Devault property is one of five quarries operated by Independence Construction Materials, a companyowned aggregate and asphalt supplier. Mining operations still continue in the eastern quadrant of the 87-acre site, and activity in the western quadrant now concentrates solely on surface mining and production of large, specialty stone products.

This creates the opportunity to commence the reclamation process in the deepest void in between, approximately 240 feet below the quarry rim.“Taken in total, the void measures approximately 8,000 acre-feet,” says Devault Partners General Manager Steve Shanahan. “Put another way, that’s about 12 million cubic yards we need to fill,” he says, standing on the quarry floor looking up at the high rock walls surrounding him. He continues, “The goal of this longterm project is to restore the property to its highest and best use, which will take 20 to 25 years to accomplish.” The highest and best use is to reclaim the site as a future devel-

opment property by utilizing it as a viable and sound repository for safe and documented clean fill materials. These materials will include dirt and stone; crushed rock; blast rock, incidental asphalt from road construction (less than 25 percent by volume); unpainted concrete block and brick; concrete walks, foundations and curbing.

Originators are commonly developers, land owners and site development contractors.

Several layers of fail-safe procedures are in place to ensure that: 1) no unacceptable materials are placed in the space, and 2) water quality is protected on and off the site.

Strict compliance with Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) permits calls for meeting requirements for earth placement, phasing of work and management of multiple tipping areas to segregate customer orders, and keep pace with the filling activity at the site, while maintaining water quality. Stringent environmental guidelines dictate the quality of the fill for use under the water table. In addition, internal quality control and quality assur-

Project Wrap-up ance levels above those mandated by permit are in place. These initiatives work together to reduce the risk of an improper fill entering the property and also reduce the risk of a costly clean-up, the cost of which would be shared by all of the fill originators.

Every load of fill receives a visual inspection and is tested with a handheld photoionization detector as it enters the site.

If it sounds like the reclamation process is mining done backward, that is essentially correct.

A reverse mining plan is underway to determine which areas may be reclaimed while operations carry on. New check-in facilities and material screening and ticketing stations are being established for quick processing at the entry of the quarry scale house. An added advantage to the reverse mining scenario also exists in the form of loading vehicles with aggregate products for backhauling to the originator’s construction site.

As the clean fill operations continue, Better Faster Safe will report periodically on the progress of the initiative. Twenty years should provide plenty of opportunity to track its success.

D.C. The unique project was begun in the spring of 2012 and included the

excavation and removal of 45,000 cubic yards of earth to reach the proper grade, but only after piles had been driven on all three sides of the site to maintain the integrity of the perimeter, which was adjacent to active rail lines on every side. Utilities installation took place simultaneously with the construction of new structural concrete below-grade train inspection pits, which will be used by technicians and

mechanics to service and maintain the trains. MARC Wedge took 18 months to complete, was finished on time with no incidents

or injuries and has earned customer satisfaction ratings of outstanding from the owner, the Maryland Transit Administration.

Decades of Flood Damage and Loss Are Now in the Past Pine Run and Rapp Run are two streams that pass through Upper Dublin, PA, and have caused periodic

flooding in the township for many years. Upper Dublin officials have routinely dealt with road closures, home and office floods, and even rescues of residents from stranded vehicles. After investigation of the area, it became apparent that the only way to truly address the flood control issue in Upper Dublin Township was to build a flood-retarding structure on each stream. The locations

of the flood-retarding structures were chosen so that they could provide protection for the greatest number of homes and businesses. As a result, the Department of Environmental Protection’s Dam Safety program categorized these structures as high-hazard dams, signifying that any failure of the dam would result in significant loss of life and commerce. Permits for a high-hazard, on-stream dam are not typically given, resulting in rigid decisionmaking and substantial inspection from regulatory agencies, owner and engineers.

Site hydrology and soil conditions made for a difficult work environment.

Even after a minor rain event, the streambed would flood, and the high clay content on-site caused the adjacent soil to be unworkable. Crews

moved constantly to maintain optimal production and to progress through 150 individual concrete pours.

High summer heat required the concrete suppliers to use large quantities of ice to ensure material placement temperature did not exceed 80 degrees as required in the specification. Concrete work had a five-day pour-back requirement, which added to the constant and rapid deployment of crews throughout the process.

Both the 80-degree concrete and the five-day pour-back are requirements of dam construction, and inspection

was unyielding on these specifications. This required concrete crews to move all around the site to keep up with the production schedule.

In addition, a 10-phased, highly sequenced project required work to be done in a piecemeal fashion. With all these obstacles in a floodprone area in one of the wettest years in Upper Dublin history, crews managed to stay on schedule, avoiding liquidated damages associated with 14 milestone dates.

In all, the concrete weir structures required 4,500 cubic yards of concrete, and the earthen embankments consumed 30,000 cubic yards of imported soil.

BWI Runway Expansion Anne Arundel County, MD Also for the same owner, the second contract, for the reconstruction of the runway itself, has just begun. At 9,500 feet in length, runway 15R/33L is the longest runway of the four. At the outset, crews will close runway 15R/33L for 22 consecutive weekends to begin construction operations. From July through October of 2014, the runway will be completely closed as it is relocated to its new position. The project will require 18 months for completion. The work will include 352,000 cubic yards of excavation, 150,000 tons of asphalt and 120,000 cubic yards of concrete. As the work continues, the project will be revisited in these pages.

a 192-foot, 135,000-pound bridge at Pine Run and a 135-foot, 58,000-pound bridge at Rapp Run. Multiple pick set locations were needed to allow the cranes to be within the required radius for safe operation.

All safety concerns and discussions of upcoming work were discussed in daily crew huddles and biweekly mass safety huddles to ensure safe work operations, and to meet the personal and professional standards that define the company’s Home Safe Tonight initiative.

Runway Expansion Project Underway at BWI

Embankment construction calls for relocation of utilities as part of 350,000 cubic yards of excavation. Air traffic directly overhead or nearby is a constant companion for all crew members on the site.

Work is underway on the company’s second contract at Baltimore-Washington Airport (BWI). Built in the late 1940s, BWI is not the oldest airport in the region, but it was the first to accept passenger-jet traffic in 1958. At the time, the runways at Washington National Airport were not long enough for jets, and the new, larger Dulles Airport would not open until 1962. In calendar 2010, nearly 22 million passengers flew into or out of BWI, making it the 24th busiest airport in North America.

The first part of our work, which is for the Maryland Aviation Administration and will finish in the spring of 2014, is the construction of an earthwork/embankment project to accommodate the relocation of runway 15R/33L, one of four runways at the facility. New federal safety standards for runways have been introduced based on the amount of traffic the airport handles and other criteria. The embankment will allow for the reconstruction of the existing runway and provide a wider runoff area parallel to it.

Project Report US 202 Highway and Bridge Reconstruction Malvern, PA

W

ork began early in 2013 on a threeyear highway and bridge widening and reconstruction project on US Route 202 in the Philadelphia suburbs. The work is being performed

by Pennsylvania construction unit Allan A. Myers.

Included in the scope of the work is the widening of 2.6 miles of four-lane, limited-access highway in two directions, and the demolition and rebuilding of two bridges contained in that distance. A new single span bridge over Planebrook Road will replace the current single span, and a new single span over SR 401 will replace the existing triple span.

Precast sections were picked by crane from a bridge above, lowered, rotated and placed onto a jig, then lifted by an industrial forklift, which rolled each section to its successive position. The sections were then lifted and lowered into structural concrete channels built to accept them.

The present interchange at SR Route 401 will be demolished, built and reconfigured to accommodate traffic volume that exceeds current capacity.

Also, an existing bridge over the Chester Valley Trail will be removed and replaced with a 20-foot by 10-foot precast concrete arch culvert. In all, five separate traffic stages will be put in place to allow for different phases of construction to occur, primarily the consecutive building of the northbound and southbound sections of the highway.

Preliminary work began in the spring of 2013,

and included shoulder reconstruction, installation of cross pipes, duct bank work, storm drainage installation in the existing median, relocation of fiber-optic lines to a temporary aerial position and partial demolition of the current SR 401 bridge.

From the fall of 2013 and continuing for one year will be the southbound closure of Route 202, the demolition and rebuilding of the southbound Route 401 and Planebrook Road bridges, construction of new ramps to Route 401, southbound offset noise walls and the temporary crossovers that will be needed for stage 4 in the

fall of 2014. The concrete paving will total 133,083 square yards (47,392 cubic yards) and consists of 12 inches on the mainline and 10 inches on the ramps. Sixty-five percent of the paving must meet a specified ride performance. Eighty-five percent of the work is slip-form concrete and 15 percent is hand form work.The work will be completed

by May 13, 2016, and the plant establishment period will conclude on May 13, 2017. “More than 180,000 man-hours will be required to execute the work on this project,” says Andy Bates, project manager. He adds, “Much of the early work was performed at night, but later stages will be built in daylight. But traffic is always heavy here, so safe traffic management is still a 24/7 commitment.”

Safe work operations are planned into each day, are discussed by every crew before their shift commences, and are reviewed at the end of each shift as well.

We will revisit the Route 202 job in subsequent issues of Better Faster Safe and report on the progress of its long journey to a successful completion.

he construction of the Brandywine water treatment plant was recently completed. The two-year project included the demolition of all old equipment and piping in the historic 100-year-old Brandywine water filter plant, as well as that of

the inner structure of the building, all while preserving its exterior facade.

Building a new, technically sophisticated 14 milliongallons-per-day treatment plant inside the shell of the old building was a meticulous process, and has been described in previous issues of Better

Faster Safe. The skill, patience and hard work have resulted in a new facility that exceeds the expectations of all parties involved, and the construction team has earned well-deserved praise for a difficult job done well, done safely and on schedule.

“There are two distinct qualities about Allan A. Myers that separate them from others; the company’s “human element” and their “ability to execute.”

When it comes to their people, they possess passion, intellect, and a strong ability to communicate. Project Report Elm Avenue/I-581 Interchange Roanoke, VA Work began in May of 2013 on the Elm Avenue interchange with I-581/US Route 220 in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. I-581 is a 6.75-mile spur from I-81 into the city, and overlays the same footprint as US Route 220 for that distance.

The Elm Avenue interchange is the only downtown exit from I-581.

The scope of the work, which is scheduled for completion in August 2015,

throughout the day, and we work near a live Norfolk Southern Railroad track.

Much night work has been required, including pulling nine beams over I-581 and nine beams over three railroad tracks. This hazardous work has been performed safely, calling for close coordination with subcontractors and state police. Some of these were “tandem picks,” adding another layer of complexity to the job. Also, the

change was to replace a proposed 322-foot Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) wall adjacent to the widened northbound on-ramp with a VDOTstandard concrete gravity retaining wall (RW-3).

Responsible for identifying the advantages of one construction method over another was Jeff Humphreys, design-build project manager at the Elm Avenue project. Jeff reports, “A review of the design concepts suggested that the reinforcing straps that are typical of MSE walls would require additional excavation, which in turn would cause shoring to be installed due to lack of room to lay back the slope.” In an apples-toapples comparison of the relative economies of an MSE wall versus an RW-3, the MSE wall

might be revealed as the better choice. “But,” Jeff says “a detailed cost analysis specific to the Elm Avenue site proved the RW-3, even with its requisite formwork and concrete cure time, to be the more cost-effective alternative.” Forming and pouring the RW-3 with typical wall sections also allowed for repetitive pours, adding efficiency, safety and predictable execution to the task.

There is no substitute for real-world construction experience, and the design-build process allows it to be used to everyone’s advantage, as has been demonstrated on the Elm Avenue project.

“MGB” Bridge Girder Placement Complete in Newport News Part of the Middle Ground Blvd. Extension project in Newport News, VA, includes a new four-lane, two-span bridge over an active CSX/Amtrak rail line. Bridges over railroads always come with their own set of additional considerations, particularly in areas of railroad-mandated safety requirements, permitting and scheduling of work operations, including the need to

periodically halt rail traffic.

Building the Middle Ground Blvd. bridge required setting 22 concrete girders over the railroad, each girder measuring 155 feet in length and weighing 90 tons. Special permitting was required by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to allow the slow and complicated transport of the girders by truck

through the streets of Newport News. Each girder needed to be lifted by cranes from its staging area to a second staging area, and the cranes then repositioned to lift the girders into place onto the abutments. Eleven girders were set, two per shift, during daylight, and 11

more were placed at night, also two per shift.

Logistics and tight site conditions determined the rate at which the work could be executed.

Francis Gray

Kimber started his career with the company as a concrete form carpenter at the Warminster treatment plant project in 1988, and he has been plying his craft for 25 years. He is a master carpenter that has a flair for creativity that can make complicated forming look easy, but his greatest contribution has been his willingness to be a mentor, coach and teacher to those he worked with. Many young people have learned from the master, and can thank Kimber for sharing his skills and knowledge with them. They probably also learned how to tell a good story, too, another Kimber skill set.

Frank (aka “the wolf” because of the beard) is a hardworking, dedicated employee who is a Jack of all trades. Frank has done many different tasks throughout the years but is most well-known for his ability to solve challenging problems in small, confined areas. Frank is a wealth of knowledge and a great asset to the company.

Dennis Bradshaw AI-MD

Dennis started as a top man on a pipe crew and spent his first three weeks mixing concrete by hand to pour drop connections for a sewer manhole.

He was promoted to an equipment operator in the mid-1980s and has been a field manager for the last 20 years. He and his wife just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary.

Chuck started his career with AAM as a laborer in 1988. Mike Ceglowski says, “My mind is at ease when Chuck is on my job testing the concrete.

Chuck’s professionalism and experience quickly develop a sense of trust from the inspectors, to the concrete companies, to the AAM field personnel he works with.” Always in demand, he is dependable and reliable, no matter when we place concrete.

Pat is lead man on a pipe crew but has experience in every construction operation that takes place below grade. He is a welcome member of the team on any project he is assigned to, and can be relied on to do what needs to get done. He is a devoted Notre Dame fan and makes at least one “pilgrimage” to South Bend each fall.

Mike started his career with AAM as an operator fresh out of Penn Tech.

He came to work for Allan A. Myers as an operator with Jack Newnam and has worked with Fran Purcell. Mike has worked on the Porter Road transmission main, where the crew crossed I-95 with 60-inch casing pipe, a milestone, as we are the only company to open cut I-95.

Godfrey Ott AAM

Godfrey started his career with AAM as a lowbed driver, and he is a lowbed driver to this day. His truck is a testimony to the fact that he firmly believes in the image of excellence. Equipment will always be properly secured and will arrive on the job in better shape than he found it. It will certainly always be cleaner than he found it. “He puts his heart and soul into his job every day,“ says Doug Ott.

Bruce Robinson AAM

Bruce is the type of operator that can make a piece of equipment an extension of his hands.

He has a keen sense of the grades and is a hardworking operator. Keith Crawford says “I asked a grade checker one day if Bruce ever took a break, and he said not really, but he knows he ate because he saw a banana peel come flying out of the grader window while he was backing up.”

Michael Petersheim

Curtis Russell

Mike started with ICM at the Morgantown Quarry as an equipment operator and moved to Paradise Quarry about 12 years ago, where he is the primary tower operator. He enjoys his work but would rather be outside hiking and exercising his dogs.

A family man, he enjoys spending time with his wife and son.

Curt is a one-of-a-kind type of employee who brings his give-a-darn to work each and every day. Curt always puts the needs of ICM before his own and has risen to many challenges on many occasions. He is known for his willingness to work whenever he is needed, even staying late to fix the plant, all while keeping his coworkers entertained!

You cannot ask for a better guy to be by your side.

Lewis Ryan ICM

Lew started with the company as a concrete truck driver at the Devault RMC plant. He then moved to driving dump trailer, and finally to driving fuel truck.

He delivers diesel fuel for off-road equipment at our asphalt plant and quarry locations in Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland.

He covers many miles and works well into the night, but earns his nickname “Smiley” every day. He has trained other drivers, and is known for being thorough at everything he does. Lew is an avid cyclist and has participated for many years in the annual MS City to Shore event.

Glenn Scafella AAM

Glenn is reliable, dependable, and can always be counted on to go any place, any time and get the job done. His skills and experience have contributed to the successful completion of many projects in the Marcellus Shale region for AAM. He is always in demand when we have a demolition job, and he has been described as an artist on an excavator.

George Shumate AI-MD

George started with T.C. Simons as an equipment operator. His expertise has been in dirt work, grading and excavation.

He was promoted to field manager in 1999. He is most proud of the work he did on the Aberdeen

Proving Grounds and the Contee Road project. He enjoys camping with his family and saltwater fishing for flounder.

Jeffery Sturm ICM

Jeff started with the company on the construction side, originally working for Allan A. Myers. He transferred to ICM back in 2009 and is still at ICM today. He operates nearly every piece of equipment known to man, and often finds himself on a dozer at the clean fill operation at Devault Quarry. He enjoys his kids’ sporting events, as well as dirt bikes and four-wheelers.

Damon Thomasco ICM

His friends call him Dan, and he is a loader operator at Paradise Quarry. He came to Paradise from the Morgantown Quarry, where he was also an equipment operator, and

his 25 years of experience make him a valued team member. Family comes first, especially the grandkids, and he enjoys hunting but would rather fish, given the choice.

Gary Tiller AI

Gary has packed a lot into 25 years. Starting as an estimator, he was promoted to chief estimator, then to AAM construction manager, then to VP/ GM of the AAM Private division. He then led the Virginia business unit, returning to Pennsylvania to lead the Environmental department in 2011. And, through it all, he’s found time to pursue golf, his favorite pastime.

James Watkins

and gave the jobs what they needed, even if it was last minute. He cares about the company and his fellow workers, even when he delivers a patented Watkins zinger like, “Oh, I see how it is … the world revolves around you.”
