Rooted in Nature - Irvine Nature Center's 2025 Annual Report

Page 1

LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR

In 1975, the world saw the debut of Wheel of Fortune, the launch of Famous Amos Cookies, the terror of JAWS, the craze of the Pet Rock — and the quiet beginning of something just as exceptional: Irvine Nature Center. Some of those names became cultural icons, some faded into nostalgia, and some, like Irvine, have only grown stronger with time.

What does it take to stay relevant for five decades? Vision. Quality. Listening. Adaptability. Evolution. And above all, staying true to your values.

As we celebrate Irvine’s 50th anniversary, I find myself reflecting on our journey — from humble beginnings at St. Timothy’s School to becoming a regional leader in environmental education and stewardship. We’ve weathered change, embraced innovation, and remained rooted in our mission to inspire the community to explore, respect, and protect nature.

This year, our team continued to deliver exceptional programming — setting a gold standard for teaching and learning. We cared for our land and animals and welcomed learners of all ages. We expanded our reach and deepened our impact — thanks to the support of our dedicated members, donors, volunteers, and staff.

In this report, we honor the legacy of the past, celebrate the accomplishments of the present, and look ahead to the next chapter. We envision a future where nature education is more vital than ever — sparking curiosity, fostering stewardship, and building resilience.

Despite the challenges facing the natural world, I remain hopeful. Irvine’s story is one of endurance, passion, and purpose. As we step into the next half-century, we do so with gratitude, determination, and a steadfast love for nature. With optimism and appreciation,

A LEGACY OF LEARNING

For 50 years, Irvine has demonstrated its innovative spirit and willingness to break new ground.

Early on, Irvine made the bold decision to expand our mission beyond the traditional role of a nature center and fully embrace the potential of nature-immersive education for keeping children, families, and adults whole, healthy, and in harmony with the natural world. Our Nature Preschool was one of the first nature-based early childhood education programs in the nation and has served as a model for many.

Today, a growing body of research serves to validate our early vision, confirming the many physical, mental, social, and development benefits of spending time in nature.

In FY2025, Irvine continued to leverage our beautiful expanse of land, stellar staff of educators and naturalists, collection of 50 animal ambassadors, and strong network of support from local government, civic, and business leaders to offer access to nature experiences for all in the region. Here are some highlights:

SUMMER NATURE CAMP

Irvine hosted its very first week-long camp in 1977 with 18 children. During the summer of 2025, Irvine’s Summer Nature Camp welcomed a record-setting 738 children, 50 of whom attended with financial support thanks to many generous donors to the Sandy Alexander Nature Camp Scholarship Fund. Under the leadership of Nature Camp Director Colby Bieshke, Irvine offers a fun and enriching camp experience, providing lifelong memories for new and returning families alike. Irvine’s Summer Nature Camp provides local employment for 20 paid counselors each year and gives opportunity for 25 counselors-in-training to develop leadership skills and earn service hours.

NATURE PRESCHOOL

In 2010 Irvine launched the licensed Nature Preschool (earning National Association for the Education of Young Children [NAEYC] accreditation in 2014) with 20 children attending half days. During school year 2024-25 we had 51 full and part-time students enrolled in our preschool, 14% of whom received funding from Irvine's Woodpecker Tuition Assistance Program.

CHILDHOOD NATURE EDUCATION

For families that seek outdoor learning experiences other than preschool, we have expanded over the years to serve a wider age range (birth to age 14) through Little Birds and Earth Friends Homeschool. In total, Irvine’s Early Childhood Education program guided 447 children in fiscal year 2025.In her 8th year, Katie Rooney, Director of Early Childhood Education, and team continue to look for fresh approaches to teaching in nature, further cementing Irvine as a leader in outdoor learning.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Irvine welcomed a tiny group of school children to our campus in 1979; today our onsite Field Trips and in-school Nature in the Classroom sessions have touched the lives of 6,147 school-aged children. Program Manager Brittany Roger leads a dedicated team of environmental educators and volunteer naturalists who eagerly introduce curious young people to the wonders of nature and prepare them to become future stewards of the environment.

ECO-EXPLORERS AFTER-SCHOOL NATURE CLUB

In 2015, Irvine launched Eco-Explorers After-School Nature Club bringing our environmental education and nature experiences into area schools. What started in 3 schools has blossomed into Irvine’s signature education program in the community, engaging 739 students in 14 schools, 4 of which are grant-funded and free for participants. This year, under the leadership of Program Manager Emily Ludy, students participated in hands-on environmental lessons and outdoor nature-based activities that meet Maryland's educational standards for life sciences and environmental literacy, while sparking connections with the natural world.

“Back

in 1985 Irvine education was focused on just 3 areas: school field trips, summer nature camp, and public programs. Today it is mind-boggling the number and diversity of programs Irvine offers. Irvine has always been on the cutting edge of Environmental Education.”

ADULT LEARNING

In 1983 Irvine launched a winter lecture series for adults that blossomed into the popular Eat, Drink & Learn and Lunch & Learn adult nature series in 2010. These programs offer lifelong learning with a twist — community building and engagement with the natural world over a catered meal and signature drink.

In FY2025, we returned to pre-pandemic enrollment at both the midday and evening programs — the highlight perhaps being Janet Davis’ presentation of Birds, Bugs and Blooms: The Harmony of a Native Garden

NATURE PROGRAMS & EVENTS FOR ALL AGES

This year we deepened our adult Make & Take programming, uniquely combining creative arts with natural materials. Programs included basket making, wreath making, and terrarium building. These popular programs, geared for teens and adults, provide opportunity for both community and creative skill building. Irvine also remains a home for wellness and is grateful to Qigong and Tai Chi leader Mary Pinkard and team, who hosted the fifth World Tai Chi Day.

Families continue to find their place at Irvine, during special family experiences like Holidays With Hoot, Maple Magic, SpringFest, World Snake Day, and Indigenous Peoples' Celebration. In FY2025, these events attracted hundreds of children and adults from around the community, many for the first time.

PUMPKINS ON THE GREEN

Irvine hosted the inaugural Pumpkins on the Green in 2009, attracting a total of 293 supporters. Now in its 17th year, Pumpkins on the Green has become Irvine’s largest fundraising event, blending mission and celebration. For the October 25, 2024 soldout event, we hosted 650 patrons to an evening of live music, spectacular food, and an extraordinary silent auction featuring 115 donated items. We are extremely grateful for the support of 49 corporate sponsors, 26 VIP underwriters, and 81 volunteers who made the fundraiser our most successful ever.

The estimated impact of the tree plantings this year will sequester the CO2 equivalent of 43.7 million gas-powered miles over the next 50 years.

WHERE LAND MEETS LEGACY

Irvine prioritizes sustaining the environment today for the benefit of future generations.

From our modest beginnings on borrowed land at St. Timothy’s to today’s distinctive and diverse 211 acres, Irvine’s physical footprint has evolved the most in 50 years.

2000 > NEW LAND

In 2000, Irvine acquired 116 acres from the State of Maryland, in 2015 we purchased 90-acres known as Bauer Preserve, and in 2021 we purchased the Quattro property adjacent to Irvine’s main entrance. Irvine is not only bigger, it’s better — restoration and land stewardship remain a core mission.

2008 > NEW LOCATION

In 1975, operated out of a barn at St. Timothy’s School. Thirtythree years later in 2008, we welcomed the community to our brand-new nature center on Garrison Forest Road. Today, our facility requires all the standard improvements and repairs typical of a 17-year-old building. This year we addressed HVAC needs, installed security cameras, and upgraded technology.

2017 - 2019 > WETLAND RESTORATION

From 2017 - 2019, Irvine underwent a comprehensive Wetland Restoration Project on our property. A popular site for public programs like the amphibian night hike, school groups, and camps, the wetlands have attracted other fans. In recent years, Great Blue Herons and Bluegills have been spotted among naturalized Lizard's Tail (Saururus cernuus), bulrushes (Scripus spp.), and several species of caric sedges (Carex spp.).

2018 >

BAUER PRESERVE

In 2018, the Native American Educational Site was completed on Bauer Preserve with cooperation from the Baltimore American Indian Center (BAIC), Stevenson University, and primitive naturalist Jeff Gottlieb. Irvine’s environmental educators actively include this exhibit in programming and have deepened relations with the BAIC including participation in their 2024 Pow-Wow, providing hands-on activities using Maryland’s native materials.

2020 >

ROBERT L. MARDINEY AVIARY

In 2020, construction was completed on the Robert L. Mardiney Aviary with space for 10 raptors. In FY2025, our incredible Animal Care team, led by Mallory Mlynarek and assisted by Ash Miller and animal care fellow Jamie Jobson, provided Irvine’s resident raptors with increased enrichment and mew enhancements.

2025 > REFORESTATION

In 2025 Irvine underwent a massive reforestation effort, planting 380 new trees (19 different species) under the supervision of Natural Resource Manager Kyle Gillen, and teams of volunteers from 9 organizations.

2025 > HONORING NANCY B. ALLCHIN

We completed construction of a new gazebo honoring the life of longtime volunteer, former board chair, and trustee emerita, Nancy B. Allchin, with the support of Nancy Allchin’s son, Douglas.

FROM FOUNDING VISION TO COLLECTIVE IMPACT

There’s something truly special about a place that remains grounded in its mission and yet never stands still. Irvine is always growing, always reaching, while still maintaining its core values.

Irvine has introduced toddlers to their first butterflies and helped high schoolers discover how powerful their voices can be in protecting the environment.

Olivia Irvine Dodge, Clotilde Irvine Moles, Jeanne Baetjer, and Bobby Johnson are the pioneers who conceived of Irvine Nature Center and the reason the center exists. Their vision and generosity provided the foundation of this organization. And thousands of people – staff, volunteers, trustees, participants – have fueled its growth.

Like we did in 1975, today Irvine relies on volunteers in all areas of our work, from interns supporting education programs to corporate groups working on the property to our amazing crew of Volunteer Naturalists leading programs for adults and children. What has evolved most are our recruiting and training efforts, led by Volunteer Manager Rebecca Sparks, which has resulted in creating a vibrant community of volunteers.

In 1976 Irvine hosted its first Jones-Falls Clean Up recruiting volunteers from the Green Spring Valley Garden Club and other neighbors – the precursor to today’s Chesapeake Bay region-wide Project Clean Stream.

In 1985, Irvine had just four paid staff members. Today, with 48 full- and part-time employees, our organization is a vibrant team of passionate and knowledgeable experts, making meaningful change on the land and in the community.

"For 50 years, Irvine has grown stronger not just because of the land we steward, but because of the people who believe in our mission. Together, their commitment, energy, and care have transformed Irvine into a vital community resource one that will continue to inspire and endure for generations.”

BRINGING COMMUNITY TOGETHER IN NATURE WAS, IS, AND WILL REMAIN A CORE VALUE.

This year we hosted a reunion of the Nature Preschool, inviting alums and their families from the past 13 class years. In March, we welcomed 350 supporters for a 50th anniversary celebratory campfire. And in May, we hosted dinner for a special group of individuals whose commitment over five decades has made Irvine’s growth and impact possible.

Just like the 250-year-old White Oak on property, Irvine’s roots run deep and are prepared to endure another 50 years and beyond. With your continued support, we can ensure that Irvine’s legacy of environmental education, stewardship, and community connection thrives for another half century and beyond.

“The goal now is expansion. Why? Because the community needs access to outdoor space now more than ever. Fifty years from now, we are going to need adults who grew up in nature to be our environmental advocates.”
Annie Lewis, Irvine Trustee

DONORS

For fifty years, Irvine has been a trusted institution for learning and growing. Thank you to our loyal and generous donors for your support, empowering Irvine to provide access to nature on our 211-acre property and in the community. Donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations play a vital role in the programming offered, staff hired, animals nurtured, and land stewarded. We are grateful.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU

A special thank you to our Trailblazers, Irvine’s Leadership Giving Society, for supporting our mission at the highest level.

IN MEMORIAM

CHARLTON G. FRIEDBERG

1925 – 2024

Charlton had an extraordinary passion for science and nature and was a generous supporter of Irvine, particularly our work with pollinators. She enjoyed regular visits from Irvine’s leadership to hear about our latest programs and projects until just before her passing at over 99 years old.

PETER VAN DYKE

1938 – 2024

Peter, an accomplished scientist and investor, was the husband of Trustee Emerita, Judy Van Dyke, for sixty years before his passing. He loved to travel, bird watch, and keep bees in addition to spending time at the family’s second home on the Eastern Shore.

TERRAL M. JORDAN

1945 – 2025

Terral, an electrical engineer by training, spent much of his career as a venture capitalist at T. Rowe Price. He shared his love of the outdoors and nature with his family and wife, Trustee Emerita, Lynn Jordan, and particularly enjoyed traveling, bird watching, and photography.

HOWARD "HOWIE" DEGRAFF WOLFE

1941 – 2025

Howie was a good friend, neighbor, and Trustee Emeritus. After a successful career in business, Howie found a passion for the land here in the Caves Valley. As one of several visionaries, he helped preserve the rural character of the area though Caves Farm and his service as an Irvine Trustee.
