rodding through the plains of Liguanea, the mighty and gallant Sir James Irvine and his committee, elegantly clothed in green and gold, broke stride, stopping dramatically. The year was 1950 when they found their promised land, the site for a great nation. Grounded firmly in his values of promoting cultural diversity and creating a home for students and with his zeal for academic excellence and fostering leadership, the stage was set for the future Mecca of culture. The years went by and under excellent governance, the nation prospered, producing analytical minds that knew no bounds, persuasive lips that could turn a stone's mind and athletes of immense power, speed, and strategy. Irvinia was the nation to be a part of and like all great stories, the struggles were soon to come.
Irvinia's founding pillars were standing brave and tall, the citizens brazen and bold enough to endure anything and everything. The nation reigned superior and supreme, and their veterans were skilled, experienced and equipped.
They were unified, united, and strong, while all the rest were soft and weak. The green and gold army of Irvinia was always above the rest. Irvinia's victory has been maintained by the united hall committee over the years.
The town crier will make known the land's Guild of Videography and Photography, highlighting the skills of budding movie directors. It will enhance the town's cry in the region's newspaper, with exposure of the land's beautiful culture, and its regional exploits will be made for the world to see.
The Irvine Colosseum shall be home to the nation's champions when Irvinits become Irvinites. As they get to know themselves, the pride shall bubble over. Together, the pillars will stand while Irvinia continues to move towards the pursuit of truth, knowledge and excellence. The committee and the hall work based on the six pillars: Leadership & Service, Academic Excellence, Empowerment of Self & Community, Cultural & Entertainment Excellence, Sporting Excellence and Publications & Productions. Let us watch them on their ongoing journey.
The Renowned Academicians of Irvinia ensure future generations of intellectuals populate
the land. Study fairs and beat festivals will be the norm of the land, with the GPA guards on hand to make checks.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and its counterpart, The Girls Past the Age of Consent get fresh members and through a series of workshops and developmental sessions teach personal etiquette, personal branding, fanning an entrepreneurial flame and finding your leader-ship style. The Ministry of Sports will gather their athletes and promote the ideology of the ideal athlete. Through the rigorous training programmes, the land aspires to conquer all. We celebrate our conquest with meals after every event fit for champions.

his is a new academic year which symbolizes a chance for a new beginning.
It is a perfect time for you to grab new opportunities that knock at your door. Be confident In all areas of your life, as without confidence you are twice defeated. As the Campus returns to a sense of normalcy, we encourage you to find a balance between face-to-face and on-line learning as these two interactions can be stronger together than apart. Transitioning into more physical social interactions, we strongly encourage you to engage in club activities, sports, various meeting engagements and social events, these will be some of the best experiences of your lives. Most of all know thyself. Welcome to The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus and welcome to the Irvine Hall. This will be your place to shine.
would like to warmly welcome all new Irvinites to the University of the West Indies, Mona!
You have chosen to chart your course at The UWI in residence on the Irvine Hall which will add its own unique flavour to your university life experience. As you begin your journey, start with a clear perspective:
Look back. Do not be in a hurry to leave behind your life prior to UWI because you are now on your own as a university student. Instead, pull strength and wisdom from your past when through resilience you overcame challenges and learnt life lessons. You will need it.
Look ahead. Don’t start your first year at university without first having an idea of where you want to end up at the end. Do you just want a degree or do you want a mosaic of experiences to prepare you for what lies ahead, beyond university? You will make wiser decisions and move with purpose if you have in your mind what you are working towards. Begin. Then finish. University life can be rigorous and overwhelming, especially in the beginning and sometimes towards the end. As you take on your academic pursuits, make room for university life which will enable balance and personal growth. I encourage you to participate and engage in activities of interest and ensure to take full advantage of the support systems that are in place to enhance your university experience. Anticipate and plan for setbacks, challenges and hiccups but see them as stepping-stones towards your goals.
s you enjoy this leg of your life’s journey, it is my hope that your experience at The UWI and
living on Irvine Hall will be both memorable and rewarding.Once again, welcome to Irvine Hall, and welcome to UWI! .

Greetings freshers, congratulations on becoming a part of the Irvine Family! As you embark on this journey I implore you to handle your money wisely. Many of you may not be accustomed to proper money management but as your hall treasurer, I will guide you. These tips may prove useful to you along your journey here at university.
KNOW YOUR LIMIT!
Don’t spend your last on unnecessary items and events. Be wise with your spending..
As university students, the sum of money you have will most likely be from family or a part-time job. Whenever you acquire this money, take notes of what your NEED before buying things you want. Set aside a specific amount for saving, whether bi-weekly or monthly
Invest in your future by gaining financial literacy. It is imperative that you learn how to make your money work for you. This may relieve unnecessary future stress. It is important knowing what to do with money and how to make money. This will relieve unnecessary stress form your life. The Irvine Hall Investment Club will help a lot with this.
This information might help you in the future. The trick to clearing student loans quicker and paying less is making principal payments. Do not make prepayments. Paying on the principal of the loan will lessen the interest rates which will result in you paying less to clear your loan.
For students, a debit card is our main way of accessing our money. One major factor to consider when getting/using a debit card is the fees. Most banks charge a fee if used with another bank’s ATM, so knowing which ATMs are available as well as the bank fees are important. NEVER give anyone your PIN or your bank card, especially if it’s a Visa card, and if possible, try to keep money in separate accounts help curb your spending.
In order to have great sex you need to practice safe sex! Sex can be an enjoyable experience when done correctly. As adults, being educated about contraceptives, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and testing as well as emotional health and sex is important to have the best sexual encounter possible.
Contraceptives, also known as birth control, are methods aimed at preventing unwanted pregnancy. There is a wide variety of contraceptives available but the most cost-effective methods for college and university students are condoms and the birth control pill.
Most condoms are made of latex but some individuals discover that they are allergic to latex. Symptoms of latex allergies include: itchiness, redness, swelling, watery eyes and trouble breathing. If a person is allergic to latex condoms the option of plastic or lambskin condoms. These alternatives both protect from pregnancy but because lambskin has tiny openings they do not protect against STIs.
Before starting birth control, consult with a doctor at the university health centre to be sure that this is the best option for you. Your visit is usually free with your health card. Birth control pills are available at the UWI pharmacy starting as low as $250.
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are infections that are transmitted from one person to another through sexual contact. Vaginal, oral, or anal sex are the most common forms of contact. They can, however, spread through other forms of intimate physical contact. This is because some STDs, such as herpes and HPV, are spread through skin-to-skin contact. Bumps, sores, or warts near the mouth, anus, penis, or vagina are common STD symptoms. It is important to note that STDs are frequently asymptomatic, particularly in women. As a result, the absence of symptomsdoes not rule out the possibility
of infection.
To protect yourself and the people around you it is important that you use a condom or dental dam correctly when having sex and get tested regularly.
Safe sex is not only limited to protecting your physical health, but also your emotional health. Boundaries and clear communication are important before any sexual activity is initiated. You and your partner must be knowledgeable and respectful about each other’s limits. Try to disclose your expectations and intentions prior to sexual relations. It is also important to set healthy boundaries.
ellness involves the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis. Instead of simply living, you should be thriving! You should aim to be the best version of yourself and in order to do this, you must prioritize your mental, emotional and spiritual health. Yes, we all know that we should take care of our physical bodies, but what about the aspects that cannot be seen?
Your mental health is of great importance. As college students, we tend to shy away from talking about how we feel. It is imperative that you form connections with persons you trust to listen and hear you out. You must also ensure you are willing to give a listening ear. In addition to this, staying locked inside your room will NOT help. Stay active! Touch some grass. Get fresh air. Allow yourself to rejuvenate, regenerate and revitalize.
Emotional wellness focuses on all that you are able to feel and express. These emotions vary from happiness to sadness, anger, among others. Being emotionally well and in tune with your emotions shows that you have the ability to love and be loved. Bottling up emotions will not let you nor the persons around you feel any better. Some ways you can practice emotional wellness in university are by being optimistic, practising time management, accepting yourself and not trying to fit in, seeking and providing support for others and know there is ALWAYS someone there for you on Irvine Hall.
Finally, spiritual wellness is of utmost importance. Whatever beliefs you share, you must ensure that your spiritual well-being is not tampered with. Whatever you partake in, you must ensure that you are doing it for yourself and not to please others. Listen with your heart and be fully present in anything you do. Take some time out of your day to meditate or just be alone. It is important that you do not lose yourself in the university space but find who you truly are.
Aim high, be great and never forget to KNOW THYSELF
Contributed by Trinae Pringle, Public Relations O icerThe matriculation from high school to university is typically one that is met with mixed emotions ranging from joy and exuberance to anxiety, fear and uncertainty. However, I’d like it to be known that everything you're feeling and experiencing is normal and valid. The decision to embark on this new journey is not simple and should not be taken lightly. It is an opportunity not afforded to most. Therefore, regardless of whether you'll be the first in your family or community to attend university or you're just perpetuating a family legacy, this experience will be that of a lifetime and shape your outlook, character and values for years to come.
As you are aware, this upcoming academic year will be the first time in two years the UWI is officially reopening its campus to face to face learning and as such, you are gifted with the opportunity of living on hall and coexisting in an environment geared towards your
holistic development.
Tertiary education and high school education are extremely different yet similar in the same sense. At this level you are being tasked to read for your degree which means, you MUST go above and beyond to ensure you’re passing your classes and you’re getting those As and Bs. Additionally, this is an adult institution. It therefore means you must think and operate strategically with the goal in mind. Nevertheless, all work and no play makes Jack and Jill dull people, so always ensure you’re having fun during the process. The UWI allows for you to have access to different clubs, organizations and societies and of course, a party now and then to keep the blood flowing. Balancing your time wisely is crucial in effectively achieving everything you set your mind to; never forget. At the Irvine Hall, we value well rounded students as we want you to be at the very top of your academic game, but we also want you to be very much involved in your hall and the wider university community. Irvine Hall is the best
place for students to grow, develop and transform into who they want to be.We have curated an environment that seeks to foster development and hone talents in areas such as the arts, dancing, academia, sports, and of course culture. We are the Cultural Mecca of the UWI Mona. Regardless of your interest, passion or love, the culture at Irvine Hall is certain to bring out the best in you.
With that being said, I would like to congratulate you and welcome you to the Cultural Mecca of the University of the West Indies. Welcome to the Irvine Hall where you will only leave when you truly 'Know Thyself’.
Making friends doesn’t have to be hard, as long as you stay true to yourself. You will end up with some unexpected friendships that may just be life long connections. Here are 4 quick tips on how to make friends in university:
CUse your classes, peer groups, old high school, home parish and your home country. Start with your major and your classes. Ensure that you use the orientation period to connect with others that do the same major and are in the same classes as you. Knowing that you have someone to ask questions, study together and have similar experiences can help significantly.
Another way people end up connecting in university is knowing someone that comes from the same parish, high school or meeting someone from the same country. Bonding over differences and similarities in living at home compared to where you are now opens an avenue to forming friendships. Reminiscing about your favorite high school teachers, favorite home-cooked meals or any good memory also makes great conversation to form friendships.
It is always hard to adjust to a new space. As people, we are naturally averse to change and that feeling of starting over can be daunting. We know you may feel scared, anxious or “a way” as some Jamaicans would describe it, but it’s a part of life and managing it here will definitely do you good in the future.
The first thing to remember is that you’re not alone; not only does Irvine Hall have a team and programmes to assist your integration into the space, but you will be surrounded by people who feel exactly how you do! Whether you came alone, with family or with a few friends, moving away from home and being around people you don’t know is going to be nerve-racking. This happens to be a
unique circumstance, you will be coming on the UWI campus after roughly two years of inactivity. Everyone is going to try to re-establish themselves so you might be bombarded with events and activities, but that’s okay! That’s a part of the UWI culture and why time management is of utmost importance.
You will have face-to-face classes on a regular basis, and you will have to get up earlier than 5 minutes before your first class. It is no worries, this is what we’re used to. It is what we have been doing before the pandemic so you will be fine!
At the end of the day, readjusting boils down to two things: empathy and time management. Remember that the guy sitting across from you in your lecture is just as nervous to raise his hand as you are, and the girl
in your common area is also afraid to make new friends. Remember also that you’re a student first, and the aim of coming to the UWI is to LEAVE so don’t get too caught up in the events, they’re not going anywhere.
You are in the unique circumstance of being an Irvinite, and Irvinites look out for each other wherever they are. So whether on hall, on the road or in school, look out for one another and remember we’re all readjusting.

‘Know Thyself’ is the motto of Irvine Hall and it is held closely to our hearts. We remember it in everything we do and carry it everywhere we go. Irvine Hall has always been supreme in all the categories whether it is sports, academics, culture or vibes, we’ve dominated them all. Sports supremacy as well as physical and mental wellness have always been the main priorities of the Irvine Hall Sports Society. For the upcoming year, we aim to improve and dominate being the best and most well-rounded hall on the campus. We plan to do so both physically and academically. Some major sporting events and activities that will occur throughout the year on Irvine Hall are:
WWacky sports is a part of Irvine Hall’s Founders Week and is a day of amusement and integration where the Irvine Hall population is divided into teams at random and will participate in a series of events. These are not your typical sporting events. They are uniquely made for fun and laughter while maintaining your inner competitive spirit. Some examples are egg & spoon race, walk & wine race, among others.
OOur very competitive Champion block is a yearlong list of sporting activities in which the blocks battle for the title of ‘Thee’ Champion Block of Irvine Hall. Through intense competition, teamwork and dedication each block will have the ability to maximize their points if they win an event. After each day of competing, the points standing will be updated on the Irvine Instagram page. At the end of the school year the block with the most points will be crowned Champion block of Irvine Hall for the academic year.
WWe compete on a block level not only to crown the champion block of the hall but to scope for persons with the talent and ambition to compete for Irvine against all the other halls. All Champion Block competitions hosted are geared towards moulding the best team to put forth to compete in the UWI intra-mural events. Irvinites are you ready? Do we have what it takes to be ‘Thee’ Champion hall of The University of the West Indies? The championship will be hosted by the UWI Guild with the help of all the respective sports representatives.
MMafia games is an iconic day for Irvine Hall. It’s a sports day filled with pride, excitement and competitiveness. The day engulfs track and field events in which all blocks will compete with points earned from the previous champion block events. This event commences at the UWI Mona bowl on the Usain Bolt track in the month of February so be sure to put on your running shoes and be ready when it’s time to GO!
To conclude, we encourage you to step out of your comfort zone. Help us keep the great Irvine name. Let us show that we are indeed the greatest hall!

States. Since 1956, Irvine Hall has been the site of Culturama, the largest and most extravagant cultural exhibition on campus. The goal of Culturama, a week of events, is to highlight Caribbean culture, cuisine, and craft while fostering interregional harmony.
Culturama is a unique experience that lets you take in cultural elements from all across the Caribbean. You can experience culture here through food, dance, dress, and other facets
Culturama highlights culture by showcasing our artistic abilities in music and dance. This gives everyone a full experience, especially for those who haven't had the opportunity to travel outside of their own country. It gives a wide perspective into the meaning of culture and will give anyone who has had the pleasure of witnessing it a greater appreciation and respect for not just their own culture but everyone else's.
Irvine Hall embodies diversity and culture. One of the many things that we use to develop our residents is the yearly hosting of the Mr. and Miss Irvinia Pageant. Under various themes, our residents are tasked with self growth and development throughout the journey of the pageant. The pageant comprises of two main sections which are the talent and/or costume competition and this leads us into the coronation where the evening wear and questions are used to finalize the winners. Various sectional prizes are also awarded on the night of coronation to award the hard work of the contestants. The young men and women experience training and bonding sessions to prepare them for the show while growing closer together. The great thing about Mr. and Miss Irvinia is that regardless of who wins, every contestant leaves as a winner because of the amazing growth displayed by all.
The purpose of the pageant is not only to identify beauty. Mr. And Miss Irvinia aims to mould each contestant into better versions of themselves. The pageant facilitates self-confidence, awareness, poise, self-actualization and growth. The aim is to inspire all who enter and those who watch from afar to find their purpose and even after the pageant has ended, to continue growing. It has been seen year after year where many residents who enter the pageant step into their true calling and out of their shells which is exactly what we aim for here on Irvine Hall. Irvine Hall creates an atmosphere with opportunities for you to grow as an individual. Thank you for making Irvine Hall your place of residence. You have chosen growth. Get your dresses and suits ready: Will you be the next Mr and Miss Irvinia?
