Education in 2012, the team took the name Gogebic Miners with new team colors and logo. In 2017, Ironwood joined the co-op. They compete in the West-PAC. W-M offers other sports in Class D which compete in the Copper Mountain Conference. W-M also offers Quiz Bowl and other clubs. The Wakefield-Marenisco school board meets each month, generally on the third Monday at 5 p.m. Most meetings are held at the school in the administrative offices board room. Watersmeet School District

Watersmeet School, home of the Nimrods, is located on U.S. 45 in Watersmeet. Enrollment is around 137 K-12. A major renovation in 2003 gave an aging building and the 1970s addition a major upgrade. A new gymnasium, library, lunch room, community weight room and suite of offices were also added, as well as a new playground and parking lot. Hurley School District

The Hurley K-12 School District continues to work to meet the challenges of education in the 21st century. Whether it be personal computers for students and staff, the expanded Northwoods Manufacturing facility, a revamped library or rejuvenated athletic fields, the district continues to invest in the future. Enrollment is around 554 K-12. The Hurley School Board usually meets at 5:30 p.m. on the third Monday of every month. The board meets in the library at the school on Range View Drive. An annual meeting is conducted in October. Any district resident can vote on items covered at the annual meeting or bring up a topic for a vote. The electorate authorizes the school board to levy taxes at the annual meeting, but the board sets the annual tax levy. The Northstars football team will play an indepedent schedule this year with designs on joining a conference next year. The other Northstar boys and girls teams play in the Indianhead Conference. Mercer School District

The Mercer School District is one of the smallest public school districts in the state of Wisconsin, operating in one K-12 school building. The district promotes its small classes and opportunities for individual attention from teacher to student. Local organizations, businesses and individuals donates tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships to graduating seniors each year. Enrollment is around 158. In 2006, school boosters organized the Mercer Education Foundation to raise funds for scholarships, special classrooms projects and other enrichment opportunities for students. Since 2007, the foundation has named inductees to the Mercer School Hall of Fame. The Mercer Tigers compete in volleyball, cross-country, basketball and track. Mercer has a co-op 8-man football program — the Pioneers — with Butternutt. Mercer students have found success in forensics, patriotic essay-writing contests, robotics contests and youth government endeavors, as well. The five-member Mercer School Board meets at 6 p.m. on the fourth Monday of the month in the school commons.
