The Apostolic Lutheran Church of Ironwood is part of an international federation of congregations (www.apostoliclutheran.org). It has its roots in Scandinavia and came to America with the immigrants in the late 1800’s. The congregation met in homes until building a church on Sutherland Street which was occupied until 1981. We purchased and renovated our current building, the former National T store on Aurora Street. This building was dedicated on July 19, 1981 and has undergone exterior renovation in the last 10 years.

Worship Services Sunday Morning Worship: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Mid-Week Service: 6:30 p.m. Ironwood Assembly began in a tent on the corner of Ayer and Lake where revival services went on for 2 years with an itinerant evangelist. After meeting in that tent for 2 years, the new, fledgling Church moved to several locations before building a new sanctuary with the pastor’s residence attached on the corner of Greenbush and Harding. Sensing the need for a bigger building due to growth, in the fall of 1951, the Church purchased the Swedish Methodist Church on the corner of McLeod Avenue and Curry Street. In 1998, the Church moved to their current location after purchasing the former Ottawa Forest building. There were a number of pastors that served the congregation, but in January 2000, Rev. Mark Ortman was voted in as pastor and began serving as pastor in March 2000. Rev. Ortman and his wife, Ruth, have served the Church since that time. The fulfillment of the “Great Commission” is to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ to all the world and make disciples of those converts. This “Great Commission” is lived out through the mission statement of Ironwood Assembly of God. Our Mission Statement is “To reach, love and grow people for the Kingdom of God” and that is done through evangelism, fellowship and discipleship. Accomplishing our mission statement is done by preaching/teaching the Word of God, outreaches such as outdoor concerts, back to school cookouts and other events. Also, the Church is involved in a number of missions endeavor in the region, as well as around the world. The congregation gives all the credit to God for His faithfulness over the years and looks forward to what God has for them in the future as they carry out His mission. Ironwood Assembly is a traditional Pentecostal Church that is sensitive to the Holy Spirit, exalts Jesus Christ, and desires to honor God in all they do. For that reason, we seek to submit to Scripture in every aspect of church life. Our agenda is not set by our preferences, but by the Word of God. Because we believe that the Bible is the authority for the church, our services are characterized by thorough teaching from Scripture. Our goal in each sermon is to take the biblical text and explain what it means, in context, and how that applies to us. We also make much of theology: because we believe that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, we are convinced that there is value in seeking to understand how it all fits together. But the goal of Bible study is not academic: the first and greatest commandment is to love God with our whole beings, and the second is to love our neighbors as ourselves. We believe that the Bible reveals God’s plan of redemption: that God’s standard is perfect holiness, that we all sin and fall short of his requirement, and that Jesus Christ has met that standard in our place, taking the punishment that we deserve and offering to us his righteousness, to be received by faith. This gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, is the most important message of our church. Our goal is to proclaim this good news so that people are converted to Christ. Then, we work to help Christians grow in spiritual maturity, in their knowledge of Scripture, so that they too are equipped to do the work of ministry, so that the whole church is involved in building one another up in Christ. We seek to grow in love for God, exalting him in worship that is reverent, so that we learn to prize his kindness and his majesty. We believe that the church is central to God’s work in the world today, and that being part of the church is not merely optional for people who believe Jesus. In the church, we find encouragement to continue in love and good works, accountability, and a community in which we can show the love of Christ to one another. Ephesians 3:21: “To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

Mission: Christ Community Church is a Seventh-day Adventist congregation confessing Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world and the Lord of life. Worship Services First Sunday of Month: 11:00 a.m. Fellowship: After Service All Are Welcome The Episcopal Church is part of Christ’s Church. It is also part of the Anglican Communion. It arrived on American shores as the Church of England, brought along by the early colonists and settlers. It exists to continue the ministry begun by Jesus Christ. In the Fall of 1888 some Ironwood women formed the Episcopal Ladies Society. In the Spring of 1889 the people organized the Mission of St. Paul and held services in rented rooms. Later they purchased two lots and moved a building to the present site. On July 7, 1896 the corner stone for the present building was laid. The building was completed the following year and the name changed to the Church of the Transfiguration. In 1984 Mrs. Linwood I. Noyes donated funds to build a parish hall, which now adjourns the church building. The new hall was dedicated to the memory of Linwood I. Noyes. In accordance with the wishes of Mrs. Noyes, as a part of the parish outreach to the community, the parish hall is made available to various groups. The church is fully handicapped accessible through the parish hall doors.

In 1993 the Lord established Living Hope Church in Winchester, WI. Pastor Richard Krenz, the founding pastor, continued to faithfully preach God’s word until his recent retirement. Pastor Krenz was joined in 2005 by Pastor John Nuce, who has assumed the privilege of teaching and preaching this vibrant church family. Living Hope Church believes in what the Apostle Paul called the simplicity of Christ. The Name of our faith is Jesus Christ, and it is our desire to exalt, worship and praise Him first and foremost. It is the saving truth that God gave His Son, Jesus, to become a man and dwell with us here on this earth, to die in our place for our sins, and to rise again the third day; every man must hear and believe this truth to be saved and secure in Christ forever. We focus on this simple message as we work line by line, verse by verse, book by book through the Bible on Sunday mornings and Thursday evenings. Our worship services consist of singing hymns and choruses that exalt and praise our Savior, followed by the preaching of God’s Word. Our midweek Bible studies are on Thursday nights at 7:00. In these informal studies, we take a book of the Bible and study together verse by verse, striving to observe what God says, trust and believe Him, and apply these truths in our lives for His glory. On October 17, 1971 Trinity Lutheran church of Bessemer and Bethany Lutheran Church of Wakefield became Our Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church. Our combined family has been worshiping in the current building since its dedication in 1974. As the center of focus in our sanctuary a simple cross of wood reminds us of the humble service our Lord has rendered – dying to make us His own.

Worship Services Sunday Mass: 8:45 a.m. / Holy Days - times scheduled throughout the year Mission: St. Ann’s Parish of Saxon is a Catholic faith community that makes the Eucharist the primary celebration of our unity in Christ. We are committed to nourishing spiritual needs and to responding with our gifts to Jesus’ call to stewardship both locally and in our world. St. Ann’s Parish was founded in 1886 in Saxon, Wisconsin, where a log school house served as the home to a founding congregation. In 1908 the current church was constructed to house a growing membership, at the highest location in the Town of Saxon, where it stands today. The church’s location is a key to its welcoming, soaring bell tower, inviting all to join who may be passing through or looking for a church home. The 1950’s ranch style home, which stands next to the church, served as the Rectory and home for many priests through the years, until the parish was clustered together with other parishes. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carandolet then took up residence to provide service to the parish and local community. The former Rectory/Convent has now become the Parish Office and newly refurbished Parish Activity Center. The pride in maintaining the 100 year old church building continues with the restoration of the beautiful stained glass windows, and the continuation of upgrading the church structure itself. St. Ann’s Service Club occasionally sponsors fundraisers to benefit local community groups and individuals in need of assistance. Through the generosity of parish and community members as well as friends who support our church, we are able to donate annually to charities locally, regionally and internationally. St. John’s started with worship services in 1905 in Montreal, MI, now know as Ironwood Township, in different homes and at the Temperance Hall on Pump Station Road. A lot was purchased and construction began in 1927 with the completion of the church in 1930. Many of the current members are descendents of the original parishioners who built the church. Our church is small in size but big in welcoming everyone to worship. Our doors are always open to new members so please feel free to visit one of our services to see how welcoming our little country church is. It will be worth the stop.

In the booming, brawling Hurley area community of 1885 and 1886, the missionary priest Fr. Chrysostom was the first visiting presence of the Catholic Church. In 1887 Father Gilbert Nuono gave the fledgling St. Mary’s parish its firm footing over the next 18 years. In 1891 St. Mary’s school opened to 120 students and served the Hurley community for nearly 100 years. In 1905 the new Diocese of Superior was formed and one of the first requests that came to the new bishop was from Fr. Nuono to build a new church for St. Mary’s. The church with the cornerstone was laid in 1906 and wasn’t finished until 1908. With the mines and the bustling lumber industry, Hurley had seen its heyday. With the decline of these economies, the Hurley area had become more dependent upon smaller industries, winter recreation and a service economy. The church is actively recruiting and training parishioners to assume roles of leadership and ministry in our parish. Whatever direction the Spirit leads us, we can be thankful for the faith and the efforts of those who have made St. Mary’s into what it is today. St. Mary’s 300 plus family church has several involved organizations and ministries. We have dedicated lectors, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers and several lay ministers. We have an active communion distribution and prayer ministry for shut-ins and nursing homes. We have an active music ministry, which is led by Jody DeCarlo-Schneider, Choir Director. The Religious Education Department is headed by Leone Sobrack.

The first Finnish Lutheran congregation in Ironwood was started on September 3, 1888. A charter member of the Suomi synod in 1890, the Synod assigned Rev. J.W. Eloheimo as the first pastor in 1981. However, due to rifts in the congregation, it was dissolved by the synod on August 31, 1892. On September 18, 1892, members loyal to the Suomi Synod met at the Swedish Methodist Church of Ironwood and, assisted by Rev. J.K. Nikander and Rev. Tolonen, established the Ironwood Finnish Evangelical Lutheran St. Paul congregation (translated from Finnish). Rev. Kaarlo Huotari was called as the first pastor and stayed until 1897. The congregation met in rented quarters until 1894 when they bought an old Jessieville school. In 1899, they bought back the original church building and parsonage from the Eloheimos for $1,200. In 1913, the church building was moved onto a stone basement providing church parlors. In 1931, during the Great Depression, the entire church was enlarged and remodeled into its colonial design ($15,107), plus the new pipe organ was added ($2,500). Through faith, hard work, and pasty sales, the mortgage burning was on Reformation Day, 1943. Renovations were always in the fore front. The enclosed entrance (1976), the elevator (1987), and the parking lot expansion (1989 – 1991) were added. The congregation's transition from Finnish to English occurred slowly – the first English worship in 1929, the Church Council minutes in Finnish until 1956, Finnish worship only monthly after 1973, and in 1991, the Finnish “Mary Circle” wrote their minutes, for the first time, in English. Originally part of the Suomi Synod, St. Paul Lutheran merged with the Lutheran Church in America in 1962, and with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1988. As for ministerial service, over the past 129 years, St. Paul Lutheran has been served by twenty pastors and many supply and interim pastors. St. Paul is currently served by Pastor Douglas Norquist who started in the fall of 2019. Pastor Norquist held his first in-house worship service here on December 15, 2019. In March of 2020, Pastor Doug held his first internet-only worship service due to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. On May of 2021, St. Paul Lutheran Church resumed in-house worship with the service also live-streamed on the internet. As St. Paul Lutheran Church continues our focus on the Word, Sacrament, and Mission, may God continue to abundantly bless this congregation now and in the future. Open Hearts - Open Minds - Open Doors The Wakefield United Methodist Church was organized as a union church in 1907 under the supervision of the Methodist Episcopal Society. In 1938, the church burned and was rebuilt on the same site at 706 Putnam St. (US-2 across from the school). Recently a new addition and parking lot was constructed on the east side to provide a barrier-free entrance and handicappedaccessible restroom. In keeping with the United Methodist Slogan, “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors,” the Wakefield United Methodist Church has a number of popular activities for everyone in the Community: •Youth Group on Wednesdays •September thru May •Community Meals and fellowship on Thursdays •October thru May •A Church picnic and church in the park in August •Bible Studies In addition to our support of worldwide missions, our outreach includes: an on-going Local Food Pantry Ministry; monthly Local Mission support to the Community and individuals (as the need arises) which is supported by budgeted funds and a “Noisy Offering” taken the second Sunday of the month. Open hearts – Open minds – Open doors During the iron mining boom, Ironwood had four Methodist churches – each of which aligned to a nationality. In 1950, the final combination took place, and Wesley was formed as the single United Methodist Church. In celebration of that event, the chancel area of the 1910 granite building was completely renovated, and a new 3 manual, 23 rank M.P. Moller pipe organ was installed – which continues to give outstanding hymn leadership to the present day without any mechanical or tonal changes. Wesley welcomes all people – you don’t have to be a member of any Church to attend. Everyone is welcome to come and worship with us! Born out of the 18th Century Church of England (Anglican) traditions, where Christian faith & practice were seen to be grounded on scripture, tradition, and reason, the Anglican minister John Wesley added a fourth element – experience: a person’s understanding of the faith through the experience of their own life. From its very early days, the religious movement of those who came to be called “Methodists” has centered strongly on the daily living out of the Gospel message – putting faith and love into action within the present-day world.

Her store “Nanette's Knits and Gifts” has been in business going on 9 years in Wakefield, Michigan and carries yarn and knitting supplies, soft alpaca clothing and toasty warm alpaca socks. She also carries Yooper apparel, baby gifts, as well as treats and jams from U.P. Foods. Also available are unique hand crafted gifts from her family. Nanette comes from a family of 10, all very talented. Her mother Hazel hand stitches crafty felted wool ornaments, pin cushions and critters. Brother Dave designs and manufactures bird feeders such as "Lil Sweety” Hummingbird Feeder (featured in "Birds and Blooms"), his popular Baltimore Oriole feeder and now the new butterfly feeder. Brother Jim hand carves beautiful wood spirits while sister Maria creates all natural beeswax candles. Nanette's cousins make their own Grade A certified maple syrup and sugar. Nanette is in her glory with all the beautiful yarns in her shop. Not only does she carry super soft alpaca yarn from her animals, she also carries local yarns from Three Irish Girls, Interlacement, Humble Acres, Malabrigo, Berroco, Skacel, Hikoo.
