NEWS + NOTES FOR THE NEARLYWED

WINTER WONDER

According to Gwyn Rider of Gwyn Weddings and Rider Events, the beauty of winter in central Oregon is underrated—and we couldn’t agree more. “Couples like to defer winter for their wedding because of the weather, but it is truly so special, quiet and intimate,” she says. So, on a sunny, snow-covered day, Sunriver Lodge provided the perfect combination of luxury and coziness for making this decadent elopement shine. The shoot drew its moody, rich color palette from none other than Valentine’s Day, which was brought to life with a mix of ferns, lagurus, pampas grass and other dried floral elements. These arrangements also adorned the double-circle altar installation and sweetheart table, where they provided a striking contrast to the monochromatic, white-on-white place settings. Indoors in the candlelit Great Hall, the couple cut into a true masterpiece: a cake inspired by romantic oil paintings and hand-painted with layered buttercream. The bride and groom shared an intimate dance, recalling old Hollywood glamour in their fashion choices: hers, a structured long-sleeved gown; and his, a deep purple, slim-fitting suit.

INTO THE WOODS

Renowned for its signature landscape of old-growth forest snuggled up against jagged coastline, Oregon gives couples a distinctive locale for saying “I do.” Carolyn, an officiant of Oregon Beach Ceremonies, invites nearlyweds to fully experience all the beauty of the Pacific Northwest in the perfect secluded spot: a secret garden on her family’s property, complete with a yurt for indoor celebrations. This gem caught the eye of photographer Taylor Ochoa of TMinspired, who concocted a woodland-inspired design. Cozy, inviting textures were combined with a palette of copper, yellow and natural wood to convey the look and feel of a hidden copse. The sweetheart table, surrounded by twinkle lights and featuring floral arrangements accented with mushrooms and apples, evoked a romantic atmosphere perfect for an elopement. The warm colors also were reflected in the couple’s attire, with the groom’s golden suit jacket complementing the bride’s citrine crown.

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

Capturing the traits that make your relationship unique is one of the best ways to have your wedding reflect your personalities and life together. Krista and Chris’ quirky wedding at the Firehouse restaurant was an ode to their relationship from start to finish. Their closest friend officiated, the décor incorporated details that represented their hobbies—camping and mushroom foraging— and they danced the night away to their favorite album, Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” “We both wanted a fun party with little to no stress,” says Krista. “We aren’t big into following the norms, and we wanted it to be authentic to us.”

Foraging for mushrooms is a favorite pastime of the couple, so the tabletop décor featured centerpieces of delicate amigurumi (crocheted) mushrooms stitched by Krista, along with kokedama (Japanese moss balls) and wood rounds.

The couple donned bedazzled camping crew vests, which were inspired by an episode during one of their camping trips when one of their friends stoked the campfire with a machete. Also in keeping their camping traditions, Krista and Chris put out an array of wigs, lighted glasses and other fun props for guests to don while dancing at the reception.

PASSION IN THE PALMS

As so many of us did in March 2020, Alyssa LasCano watched as her world was turned on its head. During the emotionally exhausting days of quarantine, she found herself growing restless and anxious until one day when she had the inexplicable urge to cut a few fronds from the palm trees in her mom’s backyard. From that moment, she discovered a joy and calmness in making dried floral arrangements. Enter 2022, and Palm Babe (@palm__babe) has grown into a full-service floral company. It specializes in sustainable floral arrangements that are dried and preserved to last a minimum of one to three years. With interesting textures, unique combinations and endless choices, her whimsical floral creations are fully customizable for showers, rehearsal dinners, weddings and other events (and she ships nationwide). “My favorite part of Palm Babe is meeting new people and making their floral dreams come to life,” LasCano says. “Every client’s smile gives me butterflies.” When it comes to wedding trends, she loves that nothing is off-limits. “I am seeing new couples do away with old traditions and make their weddings personalized,” notes LasCano. “I love seeing a couple’s true style and designing what they love .” Chelsea Gibson

A VEIL FOR 15 DAYS

A new era of wedding shopping is here. While tuxedo and dress rentals have been on the scene for some time, Nova by Enaura is taking the budget-friendly, sustainable option a step further and offering veils for rent. Over the years, Enaura Bridal founder Sohil Mistry noticed that customers wanted accessories such as veils and belts, but they were reluctant to invest in pieces that would likely not be worn again. From classic fingertip veils to elegant cathedrallength showstoppers, Nova by Enaura offers more than 10 hand-beaded veils for rent and home trial. The retailer also launched an at-home shopping experience for wedding dresses (for purchase, not rent) that uses an intuitive body measurement technique and also provides options for brides-to-be to try on at home with their friends and families. Saying yes to the dress and renting a veil from your living room? Talk about a win-win! —Chelsea Gibson

A BEAUTIFUL FUSION OF SOUTH ASIAN CULTURE WITH CLEAN, MODERN DESIGN AT AMATERRA WINERY

Design and Planning: Rebecca Foster, Indigo Event Design

Photography: Sean Thomas

Text: Lara M. Burnap

Rebecca Foster of Indigo Event Design was inspired by the idea of reflecting how two individuals from different backgrounds and cultures come together in marriage. “I was inspired to create a wedding design that would combine opposite styles in a way that created both harmony and yet uniquely reflected each style,” explains Foster. “I sought to combine both modern and vintage, Western and Eastern, natural organic vibes and harsh clean lines.” Amaterra Winery, which features sweeping views of the Willamette Valley, provided the perfect setting.

Nestled high in Portland’s West Hills and just minutes from downtown, Amaterra set the scene with its concrete structures, hip abstract artwork and clean lines.

(above) “Cody” by BRIDE by Sarah Seven from The Dress Theory features a traditional silhouette with a sophisticated flair due to the asymmetrical off-the-shoulder sleeve. (opposite page) The two-piece “Sandra” gown by Flora Bridal adds a hint of vintage with the full sleeves but remains decidely modern due to the effortless way the sleeves drape and the midriff-baring top.

Even though the pattern is centuries old, the timeless look of black-and-white Indian and Moroccan tiles, with their star and cross patterns, imbues the scene with a midcentury modern ambiance. The tile design is repeated throughout the décor, including on the wedding cake, on the star-patterned invitation suite and in the henna designs on Shavali’s and Sophia’s hands and feet.

Amaterra Winery’s catering department created a harvest-style menu that included roasted and carved beef striploin, roasted rainbow carrots with hazelnut chermoula, mint and dill, roasted beets and blueberries, cedar-roasted wild salmon and more. Desserts included macarons of the moment, red wine canelées and strawberries and cream canalés with Genovese basil.

(below and opposite page) The lehenga from Kynah combines a traditional Indian bridal silhouette with a modern gold-and-silver sequined pattern. The jewelry is a combination of traditional Indian pieces and Oscar de la Renta jewelry.

IN FOCUS

FILM OR DIGITAL? OREGON WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS WEIGH IN

RT Faith Photography / Film

There are many important decisions to be made for your wedding day, but one of the most everlasting will be how your photos are taken. Film photography is making a comeback as many couples are being drawn to its grain and character. But how does it compare to the now standard digital photos? And which approach would be best for your budget, style and priorities? We talked to some of Oregon’s best film and digital photographers to get the lowdown on the benefits and drawbacks of each approach.

FILM: SLOW AND STEADY

Using film requires photographers to be more intentional with their shots because it isn’t feasible to take thousands upon thousands of shots, from which photographers then have to winnow the best. “I began my photography journey shooting with film 17 years ago, and it truly challenged me to be a better photographer, as you really just get one shot with film, so knowing light and getting the shot just as you want it is important,” says Deyla Huss of Deyla Huss Photography.

fall/winter 2022 orbridemag.com | 49
RT Faith Photography / Film Deyla Huss / Digital

DIGITAL: CAPTURING SPONTANEITY

With digital, photographers have virtually no limit to how many photos they can snap, creating more potential for catching spurof-the-moment action shots that would be more difficult to capture on film. “Digital photography lets you capture candid moments in an extraordinary way. You can take as many photos as you want of special moments, such as the couple making their exit from the altar, their first kiss or the bridesmaids popping a bottle of Champagne. Digital cameras let you capture that incredible split second of a once-in-alifetime moment,” says Dan Cassuto of Sound Originals.

FILM: NOSTALGIA HAS A PRICE TAG

Film photography, being an analog process, requires many more steps than digital does to achieve its signature archival look. Unfortunately, this means incurring a few more costs than you would with digital. Developing, processing, shipping, scanning and other services add to the bill, which can sometimes total more than $900 in hard costs alone. There is also the high cost of stress that comes with choosing film, having to trust that everyone touching your photos at each step along the way is careful not to damage them.

DIGITAL: FAUX FILM

With modern editing software, many photographers are skilled enough to merge the benefits of film and digital by manipulating digital photos to give them the grainy look of film. “Because of my background in film, I have continued with the same style as if I was shooting with my film cameras,” says Huss. “Don’t get me wrong. Film is still a part of my life, because I still love the raw feel of the imagery I produce with film. But now, [I] have a little less of a headache and worry while still producing beautiful film-esque imagery for my clients on one of the biggest days of their lives.”

FILM: TIMELESS CHARM

At the end of the day, the appeal of film is in all of its quirks, which can make it less appealing than digital on a practical level. “I don’t believe there is a pro-and-con list for film versus digital. It is simply the aesthetic one gravitates to. In my humble opinion, film will always have a poetic vibe to each image

rendered. Film has a unique way of capturing what you see, from depth to color and light. It sets a mood and evokes emotions through the subtle grains in each photo. It gives room to photographers and subjects to slow down, to photograph intentionally, and by doing so, invites everyone to truly experience the moment. Above all, film is and forever will be timeless,” says Rithy Tamba of RTFaith Photography.

DIGITAL: FOOLPROOF

“As much as I love the beautifully rich, historic and slower process of film, so much can go wrong that I choose to shoot digital when it comes to photographing weddings. I’m able to immediately back up [photos] on-site and know that I created magic for a couple, oftentimes sending sneak peeks within days of the event,” says Jessica Hill of Jessica Hill Photography. Huss concurs: “Once digital cameras became a big part of the industry and introduced some pretty amazing technology to the world, I took it on for weddings and, to be honest, haven’t looked back. Shooting in a digital format has led to a peace of mind with additional backup capabilities in the camera as well as less turnaround time for my clients.”

JULIA & BRIAN

Married and celebrated: LOLOMA LODGE, MCKENZIE BRIDGE

Date: AUGUST 21, 2021

Julia Baumgartner and Brian Pawlowski’s wedding at Loloma Lodge embraced the earthy essence of the McKenzie River and the surrounding forest. Before the wedding, Julia had arranged a series of first looks with her friends and family—as well as her groom. She began with her mother and bridesmaids, followed by her father and then her adorable dog, Scout. Finally, Julia met Brian on the scenic bridge at Loloma Lodge to share a moment with one another before the ceremony. The couple married under a square arbor draped with a cascade of ferns, eucalyptus, pastel roses, peonies and dahlias. Julia wore a bohemian lace dress from True Society, accessorized with topaz earrings and Bryr clogs; and Brian and his groomsmen sported slate blue suits from Indochino. Julia’s mother and father accompanied her down the aisle to the sound of folk music played by Kat Fountain, and Julia’s sister officiated the tear-filled ceremony. A wood-framed seating chart and cross-back farmhouse chairs were among the many rustic details. Dessert consisted of miniature pies and cocktails by the Tiddly Trailer, a funky camper turned mobile bar.

AUSTIN & CHAD

Married and celebrated: SUNRIVER RESORT, SUNRIVER

Date: OCTOBER 30, 2021

If there’s one thing Chad Nicholson and Austin Wright-Pettibone know how to do, it’s make an entrance. After postponing their wedding numerous times, the couple finally settled on an autumn day at the Mount Bachelor Lawn and The Great Hall at Sunriver Resort. Chad and Austin decided on a ceremony that steered away from tradition, instead embracing their own love story and ideas. To Odesza’s “A Moment Apart,” one of the couple’s favorite songs, members of the wedding party (and, of course, the couple’s dogs) approached the ceremony in pairs with Chad and Austin following suit, making a grand entrance as sparkler fountains were set off in the background. After their walk down the aisle, Chad and Austin took time to hug all the members of the wedding party and their loved ones in the front row, a sweet gesture reflecting the importance of family and friends. Later in the evening, Chad and Austin made yet another sweeping entrance to their reception in The Great Hall. After giving speeches from the second floor of the venue, Chad and Austin came down separate sides of the mezzanine and met at the bottom for their first dance, to the classic “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley. Décor choices played off the warm wood hues of the venue and featured shades of deep green and natural colors. In one of the event’s many unusual touches, guests’ names were hand-burned onto wooden ornaments, with one side reading “Find Your Seat,” and the other reading “Grab Some Wood.” Austin and Chad merged their love for electronic dance music with their love for the great outdoors of the Pacific Northwest, something that came across throughout their design choices.

KRISTY & JOEY

Married and celebrated: WAVERLEY COUNTRY CLUB, PORTLAND

Date: JULY 10, 2021

Kristy and Joey first connected through the dating app Bumble, and after debating the controversial topic of whether or not pineapple belongs on pizza (they both agreed it did), there was no looking back. After a whirlwind year and a half of dating and the adoption of a puppy, Joey popped the question. The Waverley Country Club presented a classic setting for Kristy and Joey’s elegant event, and stunning photo ops at the golden hour resulted in unforgettable snapshots. Bride Kristy said, “I wanted to mix a more modern, contemporary vibe with the Old World colonial style of the venue.” During the ceremony, the couple paid tribute to their parents, honoring their Korean and Chinese cultures. The event’s lush floral design featured roses, orchids and bleached foliage, with minimal greenery. The focus of the color palette was cream, ivory and muted pinks. One standout element of the décor was its elaborate, unique signage in shades of blush and with cutting-edge shapes. Including small but personally meaningful details throughout their event was essential for the couple, and adorable acknowledgements of Kristy and Joey were abundant, from fun facts about them printed on napkins to monogrammed ice cubes. Bride Kristy said the best part of the day was walking down the aisle to her husband for the first time—and, of course, dancing barefoot to “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

STEVIE & RUSSELL

Married and celebrated: THE OREGON GOLF CLUB, WEST LINN

Date: SEPTEMBER 4, 2021

Party-loving pair Stevie Patnode and Russell Rands embraced their penchant for fun at their wedding, dubbed “Modern ‘Downton Abbey’ Garden Party.” Even the way they met reflected that playfulness. In 2015, Stevie spotted Russell across a bar in Florida, but refused to make the first move, so a well-timed shove by her friend Erin sent her into Russell’s lap. Stevie and Russell talked the night away and exchanged numbers, kicking off their romance. The couple loves to host house parties, create signature cocktails and spend weekends traveling with friends to see DJs perform in Miami. They wed at The Oregon Golf Club in a courtyard of blooming roses with a majestic view of Mount Hood. For her walk down the aisle, Stevie carried a 100-year-old white lace handkerchief carried by six generations of women in her family. Neon signs framed the reception; one sign hanging on a hedge wall presented their surname, “The Rands”; another, serving as the backdrop for the photo booth, declared “’Til Death Do Us Party.” The pair celebrated the signing of their marriage certificate with a bottle of Don Julio 1942 tequila. Their dog, Luke, was honored with a bar menu titled “Luke’s Libations,” a place on the wedding cake and beer koozies bearing his image. Roses and hydrangeas in white and blush tones were arranged in elevated vases of glass and gold. The décor included gold accents and vintage elements, such as etched coupe glasses and the same table used on the set of “Downton Abbey.”

JENNIFER & ADITYA

Married: AIRBNB PROPERTY, COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE

Date: AUGUST 26, 2021

Celebrated: CASTAWAY PORTLAND

Date: AUGUST 28, 2021

Jennifer Laster and Aditya Baradwaj had the best of both worlds during their weekend-long celebration of love, with an intimate ceremony on Thursday, followed by a splendid Indian reception on Saturday. The couple exchanged vows surrounded by sweeping views of the Columbia River Gorge with Mount Hood peeking out beyond. Jenny wore jewelry from both her grandmother and Aditya’s grandmother as she shone in a sweetheart-neckline gown with an embellished bodice. With just their immediate family present, the couple drew the small audience into the ceremony by passing the rings to everyone present and having them say a wish or prayer. Once it was all said and done, Jennifer and Aditya enjoyed a catered brunch with their families before making their way back to Portland. Come Saturday, everyone was ready to party at the reception. The couple wanted to integrate Aditya’s Indian heritage into the celebration, with Jennifer wearing a hand-beaded sari—a gift from India, courtesy of her newly minted parents-in-law—and Aditya looking dapper in a traditional sherwani. Florals in bright, bold purples and oranges kept the atmosphere light and fun. After a cocktail hour, guests were treated to a variety of food stations that featured Indian food from a local restaurant and Northwest fare. To close out the evening, Jenny changed back into her wedding dress for a night of dancing under the stars.

CARLIE & NICHOLAS

Married and celebrated: SCHOLLS VALLEY LODGE, HILLSBORO

Date: SEPTEMBER 25, 2021

Years before Carlie Smith and Nicholas Roberts officially met in a math class in college, Carlie had already noticed the man who would eventually become her husband. “One term, the class at the end of the hall would end and out would walk the most gorgeous man I had ever seen. We locked eyes for just a moment and in that fleeting second, I decided to arrive early every day just to catch any glimpse that I could, in the hope that something would happen. Fast forward about two years later and in walked that same gorgeous man into my math class,” says Carlie. In 2019, Nick proposed on the banks of Loch Ness in Scotland, and the rest is history. The couple shares a love for nature and wanted to bring a verdant, lush vibe to their big day. Scholls Valley Lodge in Hillsboro proved to be the perfect locale, providing naturally beautiful scenery that they could complement with a neutral palette, twinkling lights and wildflowers. In a twist on tradition, Carlie and Nick had their respective wedding parties standing opposite them—with Carlie’s party behind Nick and Nick’s behind Carlie—so that they could see those most important to them as they said, “I do.” And, because the couple didn’t have anyone to take on the role of flower girl, they asked their grandmothers to take that first walk down the aisle. The family affair ended on a sweet note at the reception, with Carlie and Nick taking the floor to Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic” for their first dance as guests sipped on a signature cocktail of huckleberry wine and Champagne.

PLANNING CHECKLIST 78 | orbridemag.com fall/winter 2022
It’s never too early to start planning. Follow these steps and you’ll be on your way to matrimonial bliss.

Reserve event necessities. Book portable toilets for outdoor events, extra chairs, linens, lighting and so on.

Start making a day-of timeline, determining what should happen when (speeches, first dance, etc).

Book a block of hotel rooms near the reception site for out-of-town guests. Register for gifts at two to three places. Start to keep track of favorite songs.

4 TO 6 MONTHS BEFORE:

Order all wedding stationery (invitations, envelopes, thank-you notes) and work out pricing for programs, menus and place cards, which will be printed closer to the date. Hire wedding-day transportation. Book flights and hotel reservations for your honeymoon.

Arrange the rehearsal dinner. Schedule any beauty treatments (brow-waxing, facials, teeth-whitening) that you’d like to have done before the wedding. Send a guest list to the host of your bridal shower.

Order passport, if necessary. Purchase wedding rings; order engraving. Remind mother and mother-in-law to start shopping for their dresses.

2

Order the suits for the groom and groomsmen. Meet with the caterer or facility manager to discuss menus, wine selections, serving style, etc. Choose and order wedding favors and welcome baskets, if desired.

Order the wedding cake. Meet with your officiant to discuss your ceremony; invite loved ones to perform readings, if appropriate.

Book your pre-wedding and wedding-night hotel.

Finalize your honeymoon plans. Send invitations to the calligrapher if you’re using one.

Sign up for dance lessons, if desired.

1 TO 2 MONTHS BEFORE:

Mail invitations. Do a hair and makeup run-through (with headpiece).

Meet with the caterer to finalize a menu. Send programs, menus and escort cards to the stationer to be printed (if not using a calligrapher).

Send your wedding announcement to local newspapers, if desired. Write thank-you notes as you receive gifts. Maintain a list of all presents received and thank-yous written.

2 TO 4 WEEKS BEFORE:

Visit the salon for one last cut and color. Send escort cards and the seating chart to your calligrapher to fill in guests’ names and table numbers.

If changing your name, make arrangements with Social Security, Department of Motor Vehicles, credit card companies and your bank. Mail the rehearsal dinner invitations, if applicable.

Stock the bar using your final head count as a guide. Send out as many final vendor payments as you can.

Provide addresses for drivers of transport vehicles.

Get final beauty treatments (facial, waxing, brow-shaping, etc.).

Pack for the honeymoon. Ask someone to bring your luggage to the reception if you’re leaving from there.

Give your honeymoon itinerary to a friend or family member in case of emergency. Pick up your dress or make arrangements for it to be fetched or delivered.

Arrange for the cake to be delivered to the reception venue.

Buy a guest book, if you choose to use one. Delegate small wedding-day tasks: someone to carry your things; someone to bustle your dress; someone to manage the gifts; someone to hand out tips; and so on.

Send a timeline to the bridal party, including every member’s contact information. Break in your shoes.

Assemble and distribute welcome baskets to out-of-town guests, if desired. Pick up wedding rings, check engravings and sizes.

Remind men to pick up formalwear and shoes, and check them for fit.

If you don’t have a personal attendant, ask a friend to help you get dressed on the big day. Talk to head usher about any special seating arrangements.

Arrange for a light snack for the wedding party to eat while getting ready for the ceremony.

LAST 24 HOURS:

Help decorate the venue, if necessary. Have a manicure, pedicure and any other last-minute pampering treatments.

Distribute thank-you gifts to the wedding party, special attendants and parents.

Organize for a note or gift to be delivered to your fiancé on the wedding day.

Take a relaxing bath, go to bed early and start getting excited. You’re about to get married!
