// Barbican reorganizing in-between

distording the interiority / exteriortiy perception by altering one’s exposure to atmospheric encounters in Barbican
how did it start?

While visiting the Barbican; due to the way the buildings are positioned, come together and connect with each other, your situation surrounded by structural elements is in constant change.
Regardless of the route taken, estate necessitates to pass through in-between spaces; resulting with a constant change of exposure level to atmosphere.

Is it the exposure level?
Which makes one question does this encounters affect my perception of the space and how?

Is it their order?
what are the other encounters?
natural light

creating possibilities for natural light to infiltrate through the space

it’s covered on upper level; I wonder how it would be for the people working inside if it was raining through that opening

rain water leaking through the cracks of flooring accumulating & darkening the colors

what are the other encounters?

Since the whole structure is not modeled, it seems that light enters in again later. This is a model error, but other openings can be provided and the evening sun can be brought in.

surrounding buildings should be taken into account

‘‘ Barbican can not be isolated from it’s social background ”
Barbican’s social aspects intimidated me and made me realize that I can not only focus on it’s structural aspects. At that point, I didn’t want to focus on its social aspects; therefore, I gave up working in a specific place for the time being.

still distording the interiority / exteriortiy perception by altering one’s exposure to atmospheric encounters. however this time designing a maze game full of in-between spaces and directing through the space’s perception of inside/outside.

brain storming

deductions wind & rain create a feeling closer to outside sun creates a feeling closer to inside if it provides another microclimate with its existence or abscence

for the second part of our presentation we made a survey amongst our peers and tutors. they are asked to answer questions relating our individual projects

This is an in-between space; neither inside nor outside. Imagine being the white drawn person on the left
an inside like looking photograph was chosen intentionally ; looks like it worked
1. Does the space feel more like outside or inside?
expectation was them to change their answer to outside ; it looks like cold breeze can alter their perception
can this awareness be linked with the body’s engagement to a space?
yes, the wind made me feel more bodily engaged with the space
no, the wind didn’t affect my engagement with the space
You are still standing there; a cold wind has blown. How about now?

‘‘ Do I really want to dictate people where to proceed? ”
the idea of strolling around where the wind is taking you or towards a sunbeam infiltrating through was much more appealing than dictating people where to go even if it was going to be a game
// atmospheric encounters
collecting moments of specific atmospheric encounters, analyzing them multisensorially and trying to find ways to evoke/manifest those moments

related to temperature; it can help scents to disperse quicker in the air

warm microclimates on the surfaces sunlight touches

by creating movement on other objects by creating movement on other objects & by being pressed between surfaces

pushing scents to travel further. it might both bring scents or clean them

touches the skin depending on weather and its direction; it can create cold or warm microclimates

although being visible on its own; it can create another scene afterwards

although being visible on its own; it can create another scene afterwards

beside its own white noise like sound; it also creates under tones by dropping on different surfaces

absorbing the sound but also creating another walking sound experience

different earthy smells depending on the environment, whether its a forest or urban city

infiltrating through the skin creates a cold after effect

infiltrating through the skin

covering the smells it breaks the coldness of air while precipitation and then creates microclimates around snow piles
rain turning into a waterfall

hanging rain droplets reflections on textured surfaces

hanging snowflakes

a glimpse of sunbeam infiltrate through light & shadow; growing up shrinking down through the day color changing sky through the day a cold shade under a tree / an eave a sunspot warming the skin and getting exposed to it step by step, feeling its warmth moving through your body as the day passes stepping out from an artificially lighted space to a dazzling sunlight
getting hit by a sudden wind blow wind corridors to avoid / to cherish tree branches moving with the breeze dust balls accumulating in certain corners wind carrying a scent of spring
the background sound during rain rain droplets falling down to water / to earth / to the car / to window drop marks on surfaces avoiding rain puddles while walking earthy city smell after rain in urban rain in a forest filling the environment with earthy smells and turning the earth to mud making it harder to walk rain while in the sea, stepping out and still getting wet by the rain
silence during snowfall
sunlight reflecting through snow covered surfaces, the brightness coldness coming from snow piles crunchy voice while walking in snow covered grounds

these are the grains I should be catching

giving the authorship to wind
since the salt grains were dropping down due to gravity, the accumulated salt has cleaned up but the ones spread through the sides were under wind’s control. to be able to also record the ones spreading to sides it might be updated

wind carrying scents
wind coming through one direction through a fan and filling the room with a specific scent accordingly. to be able to tell where does the wind coming from according to the smell?
rain coming through an openning on the roof and a turning platform with different surfaces underneath. rain sound on different surfaces and their dual relation

thoughts for testing the idea?
it wouldn’t work; scent has its own way of dispersing in a space sheltering from the rain in a corner a system to increase sound?

the perception difference between an angled and vertical window. angled is much more in relation

what if it had rained inside and form an earthy smell

// shaping the in-between
