This project serves as the n ew school of architecture for the university in Florence as a study on the theatre typology. The main element of the theatre that defines the space is the threshold between the stage and the audience. Th is is interpreted as a sequence through the various programs within the school. A public gathering space is framed by the surrounding programs beginning with the auditorium in which the proscenium

separates the stage from the public space. Walls frame the public view of the artwork or of the students in the gallery and pin-up spaces. Desks and bookshelves become the boundary between students and adjuncts in the classroom, library, and studio. The threshold becomes a structural boundary between the performance, alternating between the artwork and the students themselves, and the spectator.

re:SOUND music therapy clinic serves as a place of healing for all people in downtown Syracuse where the community faces an ongoing battle with mental illness. Located on M. Lemp Park, the project repurposes the exis ting building as a communal workspace for music therapists and visiting Syracuse Students. Above are the Communal Living floors and where the two volumes meet is a central gathering space for the entire tower. The auxiliary piece

of the existing building is a public music rental center and below in the lower level are the public cafe and community stage. The project features three main performative walls which create a relationship of mass, surface, and void within each program of the building. The spaces are designed to allow individuals to express themselves both individually and collectively through acoustic experiences which can only be translated through a mass timber construction.

Inspired by a previous study on the three states o f w a t e r, t h i s p r o j e c t i s a n expansion of the Willow B a n k Ya c h t C l u b ' s e x i s t i n g program to include a farm and a forage restaurant. The program takes the form of follies along a horizontal bar providing visitors with sensory experiences o f b o t h f o o d a n d w a t e r. To c o n n e c t t h e p r o g r a m with the surrounding

landscape, water from the lake is retracted into the land to create carved canyons reaching towards the farm area. The project reinterprets the three states of water as such: the solid state is expressed through the concrete body of the follies; the liquid state as the curvilinear form of the roof; and the gaseous state as the constantly growing meadow and forest.

Branch Hill Estate is one of the many Brutalist housing projects located in the United Kingdom. The complex consists of 21 pairs of two-storey semi-detached houses with biaxial pathways in between. Each of the units terrace down a sloped landscape creating an

overlap condition in which the public garden of the unit above becomes the ro o f o f t h e o n e b e l o w, t h u s blurring the boundaries between public and private. The estate remains a successful Brutalist housing project to this day with its strategic sectional schemes and community spaces.

The UCL Institute of Education is a project designed by Denys Lasdun during the 1970s, which acts as a wall between the cityscape and the school campus. The form of the building creates an open plaza towards the campus and blocks off the busy c i t y. B y m i r r o r i n g t h e p l u g in ziggurats, a hierarchy is formed between the plazas. The institute also plays with t h e i d e a o f t y p o l o g y. O n e can argue that this is not

an institutional type but more of a housing type by observing the plan and its slab form. The classrooms face the city while the offices face the plaza. In terms of the construction, the materials used are comparable in which the light yet precise aluminum frame attached to the building’s facade contrasts with elements like the sculptural stairs which are composed of poured concrete.
