About IFTA Academy Celebrating a wealth of Irish talent The Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) is a not-for-profit organisation, committed to celebrating, promoting and honouring the very best of Irish Creative Talent both in front of and behind the camera. IFTA works to nurture creativity in Ireland, raising the bar and encouraging excellence, recognising the work of Irish talent, and showcasing achievements across film and television to an Irish and global audience. The Academy co-ordinates over 50 Educational & Inspiring Events all year round, as part of our Learning Programme for the industry. These events examine the creative process of leading screen talents.

Liam Neeson Outstanding Contribution to Cinema Liam Neeson’s remarkable body of work as an actor has already spanned 30 years across a diverse range of projects; eighty four films in total. The Oscar nominated actor has garnered international recognition for his work in both major studio blockbusters and acclaimed independent features, delivering superb performances that have captivated audiences throughout the world.

Neeson has worked with some of the greatest filmmakers in the world; Martin Scorsese (Gangs of New York, Silence), Steven Spielberg (Schindler’s List), George Lucas (Star Wars), John Boorman (Excalibur), Neil Jordan (Michael Collins, Breakfast on Pluto, High Spirits), Kathryn Bigelow (K-19; The Widowmaker), Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins) and Oliver Hirschbiegel (Five Minutes of Heaven), among many others.

President of Ireland will present the Award on behalf of the Academy to Liam Neeson.

Neeson follows in the footsteps of other IFTA Academy honorary recipients, including Maureen O’Hara, Fionnula Flanagan, John Boorman, Pierce Brosnan, Neil Jordan & Jim Sheridan.

Roma Downey Irish Diaspora Award Roma Downey has been chosen as the recipient of the Inaugural Irish Diaspora Award, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the Screen along with her long-standing humanitarian and charity work and contributions to society. The Irish Film & Television Academy has been working closely with the Irish Minister for Diaspora Affairs, within the Irish Government’s Department of an Taoiseach, to identify a person within the Irish Diaspora worldwide who has excelled in their field, has made their mark on the world, contributed to society in many ways and remained true to their heritage, and who has been an extraordinary ambassador for Ireland. Sir Bob Geldof, world renowned humanitarian and musician will officially present the Award.

From A Woman Named Jackie and Touched by an Angel to developing, producing (and starring in) the epic drama series The Bible, Son of God and the soon to be released Ben Hur, the Golden Globe and Emmy nominated actress, producer and humanitarian Roma Downey is listed on Variety’s 100 Most Powerful Women in Hollywood, among many other accolades. A skilful and astute Producer behind the scenes, Downey has brought her ‘angel’s touch’ to a number of epic Dramas, watched by over 100 million people worldwide. This summer she will receive a star on the famed Hollywood Blvd.

Downey’s fundraising and humanitarian work includes being a global ambassador for Operation Smile for over 20 years, a charity that helps people born with cleft palates, and working with the Displaced Christians in Iraq and Syria among others. Downey has always remained true to her heritage and has been an extraordinary ambassador for Ireland, she has been a supporter of the Irish Arts Center in New York and The Playhouse in Derry.

Irish Film A Golden Era The past 12 months has seen extraordinary success for Irish film projects and talent, both in Ireland and internationally. This success was indelibly cemented on January 14th, 2016 when Irish films and creative talents received an unprecedented nine Academy Award nominations – with 25% of this year’s Best Picture nominees hailing from Ireland in the form of Brooklyn and Room – both IFTA Best Film nominees tonight.

With over 950 million people tuning into the Oscar ceremony on February 28th, Hollywood turned green with the influx of Irish talent. Profiling this success in the lead up to the Oscars, leading film publications in the USA also began describing Ireland as a creative hub for talent with Variety hailing the nation as a ‘Capital of Filmmaking’.

This success didn’t end with the Oscars nominations however with the Sundance Film Festival this year screening seven Irish titles at the distinguished festival, a higher number than any other year. Not only did these films screen on the world-renowned Park City stage but they also impressed – with major US publications heaping praise on films including Sing Street, Mammal, Love & Friendship, The Land of the Enlightened, Viva, The Lobster and the animated short film A Coat Made Dark.

2015 saw the much-anticipated release of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. The movie – directed by JJ Abrams and partly filmed on Sceilg Mhichíl – illustrated once again that Ireland is a fantastic location for major motion picture production. The film went on to be a critical and commercial success – garnering five Oscar nominations and making over $2bn at the Box Office. Lucasfilm has also recently confirmed that they will return to Ireland in 2016 to shoot a portion of Star Wars: Episode VIII. The next 12 months look set to be just as exciting as there are films due out from Irish filmmakers such as Jim Sheridan (The Secret Scripture), Billy O’Brien (I Am Not A Serial Killer), Juanita Wilson (Tomato Red), Alan Gilsenan (Unless), John Moore (I.T), Gerard Barrett (Brain on Fire) and John Michael McDonagh (War on Everyone), among many other highlyanticipated films.

Irish Drama Ireland Producing World Class Drama The past 12 months has proven once again that Irish drama currently ranks among the best in the world with home-grown series such as An Klondike, Eipic, Clean Break and Rebellion garnering positive ratings as well as striking deals abroad and major international co-productions such as Game of Thrones, Ripper Street, Penny Dreadful and Vikings continuing to be among the most-watched dramas in the world.

Epic fantasy series Game of Thrones –shot in Titanic Studios in Belfast - continues to enthral audiences worldwide and in 2015 it won the prestigious Primetime Emmy Award for Best Drama Series for its’ fifth season. The drama’s sixth season has recently wrapped and is scheduled to premiere worldwide later this month.

Other drama series to shoot in Northern Ireland over the past 12 months include My Mother and Other Strangers, The Truth Commissioner (also partly shot in Dublin), The Frankenstein Chronicles and series three of The Fall and Line of Duty, as well as the new Disney Channel series The Lodge.

Other major international dramas returning to Ireland include the Amazon Prime/BBC period drama Ripper Street (shooting at its new studio at the Kilternan Hotel and Country Club in South Dublin) which is currently filming its fifth and final season. Showtime’s supernatural drama series Penny Dreadful – shot in Ardmore Studios – has just recently wrapped on its’ third season (due to air later this year) while epic series Vikings – shot in Ashford Studios – has been confirmed for a fifth 20 episode season – with the drama’s fourth season currently airing to very high ratings on History in the US.

Selected by a special jury and sponsored by the IFB, the Rising Star Award is a unique IFTA Award in that it puts an international spotlight on Irish professionals who have not only honed their crafts in the formative years of their career - but who have also excelled in their respective fields.

Previous winners of the Rising Star Award include Saoirse Ronan, Michael Fassbender, Tomm Moore, Domhnall Gleeson, John Michael McDonagh, Gerard Barrett, Jamie Dornan and Sarah Greene, all of whom have went on to garner recognition and accolades both in Ireland and internationally.

Both Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) have received Oscar and IFTA nominations in 2016, while Domhnall Gleeson (Brooklyn, Ex Machina) and Sarah Greene (Rebellion, Penny Dreadful) are eminent dual IFTA nominees this year. Micheal Collins IFTA 20th Anniversary Screening To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the acclaimed historical biopic Michael Collins, IFTA, in association with Warner Bros, Neil Jordan, and the Directors of the Savoy Cinema are hosting a screening – in a newly Re-Mastered Digital format - on Sunday, April 10th at the Historic Savoy Cinema, O’Connell Street. Liam Neeson, who stars as the Irish revolutionary hero along with acclaimed director Neil Jordan will introduce the film.

Introduction by Liam Neeson and Neil Jordon Michael Collins tells the powerful, turbulent story of one of Ireland's most controversial patriots and revolutionary heroes, known as ‘The Lion Of Ireland’, who leads his countrymen in their fight for independence. Set in the early 20th Century, when a monumental history of oppression and bloodshed had divided Ireland and its people, the film covers the bloody 1916 Easter Uprising, when Irish revolutionaries surrendered to the overwhelming military power of the British forces and Collins was arrested. Upon his release, he takes leadership of the Irish independence movement and strives to create a free and peaceful country.
