With the growth of start-up companies and their complex network of connections, it has become difficult to navigate within this evolving context. The task of the built environment is to inform the participants of the space about the manner in achieving social order and meaningful communication. Through the semiology effort of meaning-making in an architectural space, the Signifier comprises of observable properties such as color, texture, material aspects, furniture typology and light conditions while the Signified is the relative concept defined with specific meanings by the signifier.

Therefore, the task of architectural semiology as our design agenda is to build up a more complex and precise system of signification which will bring the meaning of the designed spaces, designated functions and interaction processes into the design scenario.

The research is carried out to study the number of distinct pattern types as observed in individual fingerprints. The method of Dactyloscopy can be defined as the categorization and analysis of arches, loops and whorls formed by a series of ridges and furrows on the surface of a finger and their sub-categories for the purpose of identification.

We can understand Fingerprint patterns as a system of classification comprising of both the signifier (observable properties, eg: plain arch, tented arch, etc.) and signified (meaning, eg: bridge, bifurcation, delta, etc.) since the accumulation of these curvatures and the way they interact with one another in an aggregate system brings about various meanings highlighting the uniqueness of a finger print image.

RADIAL LOOP

By breaking down the fingerprint pattern characteristics and how each curvature, accumulation and organization is an indication of meaning, we can begin to deconstruct the existing pattern precedent into a set of rules and a system of classification. These distinctions, which include the system, sub-system and their conjunctions form the base of a semiological syntax.

SCENARIO 1 : PLAIN ARCH

In this scenario, the light curvatures permit for channelized access with faster moving traffic making the space highly public. This typology allows for linear arrangement of elements in the space.

The first typology of the plain arch depicts an independent work zone with mild curvature allowing faster movements of agents along a linear path .

The corridor and work space is segregated by a knee height partition which essentially aids in retaining total visual connect by distinguishing the work area from its supplementing circulation space . The agent can pass by the geometry without having to access its core.

SCENARIO 2 : TENTED ARCH

In this scenario, a sharp degree of curvature forms a variation of the plain arch creating a cove-like space. This geometry suggests a strong invitation towards a particular function enabling the subsequent curvatures to gradually transform into smooth arches ideal for a corridor spaces.

This curvature typology is essential for situations where crowds are required to be channelized towards a particular function making it semi-private in nature.

The corridor and work space is segregated by a full height partition meant for creating a visually enclosed cove-like space for semi-private activities.

The agents respond to the spatial parameters with slower navigational patterns through the geometries, making the space more private.

SCENARIO 3 : LOOP

This model depicts a curvature typology that begins closing up the curve towards formation of loops in turn increasing the intimate character of the space and the function it holds. This type of curvature allows for the formation of defined boundaries and along with its funneled opening allows provision for a semi-private activity.

The loop typology depicts a semi-private activity area like a meeting area and its open funnelled access point draws crowds from other functional spaces towards its associated function. The neighbouring areas and highlighted private space is segregated by full height partitions from both directions meant for creating a surrounded and intimate work condition.

SCENARIO 4 : POCKET LOOP WHORL

In this scenario, the curvature typologies serves as the most private form-function construction with a defined boundary that allows for the enclosement of a particular function is a way that its access point is open to surrounding functional areas. This curvature typology is essential for situations with controlled access making the space extremely private.

The pocket loop whorl typology depicts an enclosure to serve as a private space with one access point. The neighbouring areas and work space is segregated by full height partitions meant for creating a private work environment.

We further investigate the agent response to the spatial parameters as well as observing agent movement patterns through the geometries.

The space is distributed in accordance with our semiological catalogue, Through this, we are capable of setting up our scenarios with spatial partitions and begin to flesh out the spaces one by one and organize the furniture based on the nature of these spaces. This enables us to visualise the space more holistically as we then look into ambiances at a more micro scale.

After a number of vector field iterations, we fine tuned it to get the vector fields as close to our intended program distribution and semiological parameters, to get a rough estimate of nature of curves. Using those tests to work on detailing the layout as per the plan requirements.

The final iteration of our layout serves as the master plan for our project, the geometries lay themselves out in semiological order, adhering to spatial functions and requirements. The space enables itself to be approached from multiple points in between the 9th and 10th avenue, catering to the crucial junctions, google office and Chelsea market as the major crowd sources.

C N C PR OTOTYPI N G The ceiling form resonates with the floor creating a dialogue between them. The ceiling acts as one of the systems of signification which would be able to efficiently transmit each message and its meaning when in conjunction with the floor.

In this series of physical experiments, we combined information from previously tested scenarios of floor plates in conjunction with various ceiling conditions to structure diverse model spaces

The louvres integrate themselves with the envelope to reinforce the semiology of the spaces it encloses. The louvres not only control and monitor the light passage but also control the field of view for the crowds that approach it. The facade itself begins to provide information on the spaces that are about to follow as well as what is the inherent nature of that space.

The workshop explores various surface typologies by excercising the use of panelization to create a performative model of a desired shape and curvature. It emphasises the creation of a system with fixed and tunable components working in sychronisation to form a whole whilst closely investigating polypropylene as the primary material.The process unfolds with a series of modeling exercises beginning with the construction of spheres and systematically progresses into more complex geometries, culminating into a final form as a cumulative product of the process.

The worshop has explored various methods to create specific geometries using polypropylene as the base material. In order to make the material fully performing, concepts of descriptive and performative models were introduced. Performative models, as compared to descriptive model, through forces of tension, compression and friction that create cohesion in between individual members to form a unified geometry. During the process we have developed a surface-tuning system that lets us change the curvature of surfaces to attain specific forms. This system is based on components called ‘plungers’ inserted into holes of perforated polypropylene sheets.

By turning plungers, several types of anticipatory curvatures are achieved. The system we have developed lets us reach single and double curvature surfaces, which is a very important condition to emulate geometries such as minimal surfaces. Experiments on the material and the methodologies on composing surface systems have progressively transformed the flexible polypropylene sheet into generative, performative, behavioural and systemic surface models.

CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY ARTS Mumbai is known for its profound contribution towards the steady economy of the country, can also be credited for supporting the ever changing art scenario in the region for a very long time. Although, it has survived through many economical turbulences, social reforms, political dictatorships or the hypocrisy of moral policing , the art scenario as a whole has not achieved the level of excellency yet (or should we say), Seemingly, the need for a single unified space, capable of housing almost all sorts of arts, is quite evident considering the various tangible (and intangible)parameters accountable for slowing down the progress of ‘the diversified Arts’ in the city. Especially, keeping in mind, how extensively some of the art forms, like mix media art or experimental art, are suffering despite having tremendous potential to flourish. The nonexistence of a structured network or organisation to curate the varying types of Art at the moment is working against the reputation of ‘the Arts’ as a whole.

Guided by these facts, it would be quite safe to suggest that the city is more than prepared to accommodate an arts centre that will give a common platform to everything related to the arts which will eventually raise the standard of ‘how we approach the arts’ holistically. It would be an abode to the Contemporary art along with the conventional styles of visual and performing arts that will push the boundaries of conventional and rational thinking in terms of creation and appreciation of artworks. Each kind of artwork will have specific or customized galleries, exhibition areas, workshop areas, performing areas andstudios depending upon the occasion and purpose of the exhibition/performance (or both) as deemed necessary.There will also be scopes for interdisciplinary workshops or shows as well along with dedicated curating services.

On a broader scale it will be a space that will bring together people from different walks of life. It could be an innovative, educational platform which will actively encourage professionals, theoretical philosophers, innovators, teachers and businessmen/ industrialists alike to engage in a dynamic system of sharing ideas, the development and application of the these ideas with the students, young artists or any bright mind with a fresh perspective. Participants, ranging from a common man to a learned person or from a novice to a scholar, can get involved through. The institution is to become a cutting edge, state-of-the-art research centre offering innovative services to implement and support advanced technology in a highly digital and computational age.

PROPOSED ROAD NETWORK

The site is located at Bandra reclamation, right at the end of Bandra-Worli sea link on the way to enter the suburbs from the island city. It can also be accessed easily from the eastern/ central suburbs via the western express highway It is located very close to the sea and therefore it has a proximity to the promenade and naturally it can be accessed easily by the people even from the promenade pathways(proposed) around does not create any bottleneck anywhere.

Because of the location of the site, it’s possible to provide multiple entry/ exit points near the site for both the people and the vehicles to ease the flow of traffic while entering the museum premises Ÿ The absence of any other tall structures/ obstacles in the vicinity ( except for the back) will help the structure turn into a landmark at the entrance to the suburbs.

The idea started taking shape with an attempt to synchronize the site with the surrounding area, specially the highway and the site. The site, which is almost rectilinear in shape, is spread along the highway on the way to Bandra-Worli sea-link. The idea was to design a superstructure that would represent the iconic nature of the proposed ‘centre for the contemporary art’ and also incorporate and utilise the surrounding ambience by aligning itself with the flow of existing movements.

CITY MUSEUM, MYSORE The project proposes a museum that encapsulates the past present and future of the city in a way that respects what existing yet adding to it the contemporary signs of current day Mysore especially highlighting its rise in modern infrastructure.

It enhances interest ,understanding and respect for the history of that place. Its presence in the contemporary context is the collection of possible ideas, where its headed and the study of its growth in terms of industries, economies, and cultural diversity.

This city has embraced the progressive changes steadily over a very short period of time and has the potential to become one of the most promising hubs of technology, art, culture, and education. The city of Mysore is the house of many monuments highlighting culture and history, it requires a iconic structure representing the radically changing present era to showcase the impressive changes the city has experienced lately.

PHASE 1 : The diagram represents the simultaneous multidirectional progress of the city , it symbolises the synchronization of various sectors coming together to work as a whole for the overall progress of mysore.

PHASE 2 : The lines begin to juxtapose , forming the essential spaces.

Functional , recreational and ancilary spaces. The segments of the structure face in all directions capturing glimpses of the city.

PHASE 3 : Giving the spaces a three dimesnsional form. The spaces begin to gain volume in a rythmic manner completing the skeleton of the superstructure.
