Project Outline iRemix Restaurant

8th Grade

Introduction: This unit will cover the relationship between the United States and Latin America. Because we are studying both Language Arts and Social Studies, we will look at the history of this relationship as well as literature that relates to it. The goals of the unit are to learn about US policy towards Latin America and immigration to the US from Latin America and to develop an appreciation of Latin American culture. Major assignments: •

Position Paper: Students will write a persuasive essay on a controversial question. Students will pick a side and make a logical argument. Evidence will come from the history they’ve studied in class as well as a packet of primary sources. (100 pts.)

Mango St. Menu: Students will choose media projects based on their House on Mango Street journals. The choices will include blog posts, videos, podcasts, etc. (Total = 200pts.) Smaller assignments:

Map Quiz: There will be a map quiz on Friday May 8th. Students who do not ace the first quiz (90% or) will be allowed to retake this quiz every Friday until the end of the month. Only the highest score will count. The goal is for every student to memorize every country by the end of the unit. (50 pts.)

Journal Prompts: Every day Monday through Thursday students will write an entry in their journals responding to something we discuss in class and something they read for homework. These will be collected on Friday and returned on Monday. (5 pts. each)

Photography: Students will use Still Cameras to capture stories in their reality, Students can also re-create stories reflective of Various Characters, or Vignettes presented in Mango Street. Digital Design: Students will apply various software applications to produce imaginative and creative work that reflects their ideas as it relates to The House On Mango Street. Students will design Posters, Colleges, etc.

Fan Fiction: Students will learn to expand the worlds and lives of the characters from The House On Mango Street through the writing of short stories. These short tories will be the foundation for flipbook and mini audio book.

Video Production: Students will apply hands of experience with digital video equipment and software to create short films, music videos, and or PSA.

Spoken Word Poetry and Lyricism: Students will focus on the art of lyric writing and performance poetry. Students will have options to perform various types of forms of poetry, and lyricism. (In addition to writing, students will produce a digital publication of their work. Digital Music Production: Students will focuses on basic elements of music composition, in order to create a digital soundtrack for various characters and vignetters through out The House On Mango Street.
