It is an honor and a privilege to welcome you to the 2024 Ireland Network Chicago Ball!

‘The City of Big Shoulders’ has long been the crossroads of America, and the Ireland Network Chicago continues to raise the bar as a social, cultural and business hub that connects the Irish Community and friends of Ireland in Chicago and beyond!

Fáilte romhaibh go léir to our guests this evening from Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, Minneapolis, New York, New Jersey, Washington DC (to name but a few), and some special guests in from the Emerald Isle!

First and foremost, I would like to thank our Executive Committee for all the hard work that went into planning for this fabulous evening. Special thanks also to Damien McArdle and the staff at the iconic Drake Hotel who take great pride in hosting this fantastic annual tradition and always look for little ways to make this year just a little better than the year before!

2023 was Ireland Network Chicago’s strongest year in our 20–year history, with a calendar packed with social events, cultural gatherings and business networking. We marked another important milestone as an organization in 2023 as we welcomed our new Executive Director, Margaret Rose Keating, as she takes the reigns and builds on the great work done over the past few years by her predecessor, Katie Fitzpatrick.

Together alongside a strong and experienced Advisory Board, a youthful and energetic Executive Committee, and a diverse and growing Membership base, we are in great shape to continue to make a positive impact over the next 20 years!

I’d like to express gratitude to the Irish Government, through their Emigrant Support Programme, for providing INC with a generous grant to make much of this work possible. Very special and sincere thanks to Consul General of Ireland, Kevin Byrne, Vice Consul Padraig Manning, and the consular team for being here tonight and for their continued support and belief in our mission!

As usual we will have a raffle this evening with all proceeds benefitting the fantastic work being done by our charity partners Irish Community Services and Concern Worldwide. Thanks to our generous donors, we have some fantastic prizes this evening, including Aer Lingus flights to Ireland, a Dinner for ten (10) at Chicago Cut, a collection of exclusive whiskeys donated by Lough Ree Distillery and many more!

As is tradition, tonight we will again celebrate a member of the Irish community with our IN Spirit Award.

This year we have another very deserving recipient, and an inspiration to all immigrants, not just those of us from the Island, Mike Clune. Mike has been a tremendous supporter of the Irish community and the Ireland Network Chicago since our inception in 2003, along with many other organizations and a wide array of causes. We are so excited to celebrate Mike’s recognition with his family, friends and everyone in the room this evening!

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR LETTER Dear Ireland Network Members, I am thrilled and honored to extend a céad míle fáilte to each of you as we come together to celebrate the 20th Annual Ireland Network Ball. As the newly appointed Executive Director to Ireland Network Chicago, I am both excited and humbled to be a part of an organization that plays a pivotal role in fostering a stronger and more vibrant Irish community in Chicago!

For over twenty years, Ireland Network Chicago has created impactful initiatives, built stronger connections, and continually enhanced the vibrant Irish community in Chicago. From the innovative Founding Members to every Member over the past 20 years - you have all played an integral role in making this organization what it is today. Together, I am confident we can build on this legacy for the next twenty years and beyond!

Tremendous thanks and heartfelt appreciation goes to the dedicated members of the Executive Committee. Your passion and talents are the driving force behind the success of our network, and I am grateful to work alongside such a remarkable group. It is an absolute pleasure to work in partnership with President Ruairi Barnwell and Treasurer Nora Walsh. Their commitment to the Ireland Network is inspiring, and I look forward to continuing our collaboration to further elevate IN Chicago. To our Advisory Board, I extend my sincere thanks for their wise counsel, which is instrumental in shaping the direction of our organization.

Each year, Ireland Network Chicago honors an individual who has made significant and sustained contributions to the Chicago Irish community with the IN Spirit Award. This Award expresses our profound gratitude and appreciation for an individual’s incredible service to the Irish community.

It is our great privilege to honor MIKE CLUNE with the 2024 IN Spirit Award! Mike exemplifies the mission of Ireland Network Chicago.

ABOUT MIKE CLUNE Michael T. Clune, hailing from Dublin, serves as the Chairman of the Irish American Partnership, an organization dedicated to connecting Irish America and friends of Ireland to their heritage through targeted giving to education, community development, and peace initiatives across the island of Ireland.

MIKE CLUNE

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Mike Clune began his career in the construction business at an early age in Europe and the Middle East. In 1978 he moved to Chicago, Illinois. Shortly after his arrival, he secured an entry-level job at the company that would ultimately be the foundation for building his own firm. Over the years, Mike’s personal work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit guided him in transforming that company into Clune Construction.

In 1996, this same work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit earned Mike his induction into the Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame. Sponsored by the University of Chicago, the award is given to innovative business leaders in the Chicago area who have spearheaded private companies, overcome challenges, and exhibited high levels of excellence while demonstrating consistent sales growth, employment generation, innovation and profitability.

Committed to philanthropy across the United States and Ireland, Mike contributes to a wide array of causes. Clune Construction is actively involved in every community in which it is located, and annually donates a percentage of its profits to local and national charities. Clune Construction recently completed a pledge to donate more than $1 million to cancer research. Among the organizations Mike supports are the Irish American Partnership; C.R.A.S.H. USA, of which he is co-founder; Mercy Housing Lakefront; Rebuilding Together; Emeritus of Chicago House; Loyola Academy on the Facilities and Building Committee; and Joseph and Mary Retreat House. Mike and Clune Construction have also actively supported and sponsored many Irish athletes and sporting events, including Padraig Harrington, Michael Conlon, Saint Patrick’s Athletic F.C., Dublin Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), the Irish Everest Team, and Junior Olympics.

As Chairman of the Board of the Irish American Partnership, Mike has been investing in Ireland’s future for over two decades, giving to a wide array of programs including education for homeless youth, music education, and primary school STEM initiatives. His dedication to the Partnership’s mission has empowered the organization to raise more than $53 Million for programs across Ireland, North and South, benefiting the lives of young people and communities across the island.

Among Mike Clune’s donations to Ireland is a gift given to Inishbofin National School, the only primary school on the island, the glue that binds the community together.

Only 11 km off the coast of Connemara lies the island of Inishbofin, a stunning seafaring community with a single primary school, a church, two pubs, and a handful of seasonal hotels. Dotted with Iron Age forts, medieval monasteries, and sandy white beaches, Inishbofin has long been a popular destination for those seeking a bit of adventure. Yet, for the 180 year-long inhabitants, life can be lonely and difficult.

For Mike and his children, Inishbofin represents nearly 100 years of philanthropic commitment to a community that has profoundly impacted their lives. The association began with Clune’s grandfather, Michael J. Clune, who served as postmaster of Clifden, County Galway, from 19231935. Every time the postmaster visited Inishbofin, he grew more inspired by its

hardworking people and more determined to give them as much as he could. He passed this legacy of commitment and love to his son, Michael A. Clune, who passed it on to his son, Michael T. Clune. In June 2016, Mike brought his children to the island to pledge $25,000 to Inishbofin National School through the Partnership’s O’Neill School Grants program. His grant has been used to purchase iPads, computers, a telescope, and a weather station for the school, connecting students to the outside world. While new technology may seem frivolous in this rugged, rocky environment, it is paramount for keeping students competitive in the modern economy. With the decline of fishing as a source of livelihood, islanders need new ways to survive. They hope that their children will harness their technological skills to stay and make a living in this tightknit community – blending the benefits of modernity with the character of smalltown life.

2023-2024 IRELAND NETWORK CHICAGO COMMITTEE MEMBERS RUAIRI BARNWELL - PRESIDENT Ruairí is a Principal at DLR Group, a global integrated design firm, where he leads the Smart Buildings Practice. Originally from Tullamore, Co. Offaly, Ruairí moved to Chicago in 2000 after graduating from DIT with a BSc in Engineering. Ruairí has been involved with IN Chicago since its inception in 2003 and has served on the Executive Committee for the past 3 years.

DEAN ARROWSMITH Dean is a Dundalk native and currently works as the manager of Soccer In The Community for Chicago Fire FC. He is also the founder of Head in the Game, a mental health non-profit based out of Ireland promoting a positive discussion around mental health in sports.

JERRY BRANSFIELD Jerry heads up a Computer Consultancy company, supporting people and businesses with their computer and tech needs. Jerry has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Loyola University and a Master’s in Science Information from DePaul University.

GERRY BRETT Originally from the northwest side of Chicago, but with ties to Ireland, Gerry’s roots go back to Limerick & Mayo. He enjoys leading the St. Paul of the Cross Men’s Club basketball group and volunteers with the Rotary Club. He helps at Our Lady of Angels Mission on Chicago’s westside.

He works as a financial advisor and insurance planner with Westpoint Financial Group.

THOMAS CARMODY A new addition to the committee, Thomas graduated in May 2022 with a Bachelor’s in Information Technology and Management. With a keen interest in photo and video editing, Thomas continues to sharpen and utilize his skills helping the IN build their social media reach. He hopes to one day have a career in the theater, tv & film industry.

ELLEN CONVERY Originally from Crossgar, Co. Down, Ellen moved to Chicago in 2021 after graduating from Queen’s University Belfast with degrees in Food Science and Marketing. Ellen works as a Digital Marketer for Daniels Health, leading their digital optimization efforts. Having spent many summers growing up in Donegal, Ellen has picked up Irish classes in her spare time.

RORY CONVERY From Belfast, Co. Antrim with family ties to Co. Derry and Co. Fermanagh, Rory grew up in Dubai, U.A.E. He moved to the U.S. in 2009 to attend the University of Notre Dame where he also played rugby. He moved to Chicago in 2013, where he became a member of the IN, joining the committee in 2020. He is an attorney in the General Counsel’s Office of RSM US LLP.

KRISTEN FIELD Professionally, Kristen currently serves as the Executive Director of Friends of Prentice, committed to superior healthcare spanning the full spectrum of a woman’s life. In 2020, Kristen was named among the 26 Most Influential Chicagoans for her extensive contributions to the community. She is thrilled to be an active member in the Chicago Irish American community.

NIAMH FINN Originally from Co. Meath, Niamh moved to Chicago in 2017, where she works as a Marketing Manager at Kerry, supporting the Foodservice channel. Niamh has a bachelor’s degree from UCD in Commerce International and Chinese, and a Master’s degree in Global Business from DIT. An avid runner, she is looking forward to running her first Chicago Marathon in October.

CONNOR KELLY Connor is a lifelong Chicagoan who has worked in the special event/hospitality industry for over 15 years. Currently, he manages The Green at 320, a privately owned, public park space outside of the Loop that offers a variety of free programming and special events. Connor is also an Honorary Chairman and Former President of the Young Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago.

MEGHAN LEE Meghan is a graphic designer with a strategic approach to branding. She has created marketing collateral for clients such as the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago and the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, among others. A committee member of IN since 2021, Meghan loves to contribute to organizations that align to her values while also making longlasting connections.

DYLAN MALONEY Dylan is a Chicago native but with Irish ancestry on both sides of his family through his parents. Dylan works as an Electrical Engineer for DLR Group. He is excited to join the IN committee this year and hopes to help build a community where Irish-Americans feel more connected to their Irish roots and visitors from Ireland can have a little slice of home across the pond.

MAGGIE MCELDOWNEY Maggie is a proud Beverly native, with Irish roots in Maghera, Co. Derry. Her professional career began in Development, but while representing Chicago as the 2016 Rose of Tralee, she developed a passion for promoting tourism in her hometown. Maggie is a National Sales Manager at McCormick Place, taking pride in the impact her team has on the city of Chicago.

JOSEPH MCKITTRICK Joe currently works for JP Morgan Chase as their Middle Market Treasury Manager for the Ohio market. With over 25 years extensive experience in the financial sector, including Commercial Treasury, Credit, Corporate Trust & Asset Mgt, Joe has still found time to raise two wonderful kids, play golf and currently follows his passions of Cryptocurrency, Rugby and Gaelic football. Joe is one of the Founding directors of the Ireland Network Chicago since it’s inception in 2003.

RORY MONE Rory Mone is a Real Estate broker with Berkshire Hathaway. He has more than 20 years experience with real estate and construction of investment properties. He is originally from Clontibret, Co. Monaghan and has been living in the U.S. for 21 years. He is very passionate about all types of sports including rugby and GAA where he played for Co. Monaghan.

BRIGHDE MULHOLLAND Originally from Rostrevor in Co. Down, Brighde is a Principal kdb Developer at First Derivative, a Capital Markets consulting firm, based in Newry, Co. Down. She’s currently onsite in CME. It’s her second year on the committee and she’s looking forward to the inaugural “Doing Business in Chicago - Women’s Forum” in March.

2023-2024 IRELAND NETWORK CHICAGO COMMITTEE MEMBERS (CONTINUED) NICK MULVANEY Nick grew up in Dublin, leaving home at a young age to play collegiate soccer in William Carey University, Mississippi. He moved to Chicago in 2011, taking on the role of Director of Coaching with Chicago Lakefront Attack Soccer Club. He rebranded the club to Chicago City Soccer Club, which is now the first and only Illinois 5 Star Club in Chicago and USL Academy program.

CAHIR O’DOHERTY Cahir is a native of Co. Derry, immigrating to Chicago in 2016. Cahir is the Director of Digital Marketing & Strategy for Ricoh, and is responsible for managing full web development across North America. Cahir has a honors degree from the University of Liverpool and has a Masters of Science from the University of Ulster. He is married to Meghan and they have 3 children.

DAVID O’FLAHERTY Originally from Dublin, David studied Sports Science at TUD and subsequently went on to obtain a master’s in Business & Management from TCD. David joined Enterprise Ireland as a graduate in 2016 and has gone on to become the VP Food & Beverage FDI for North America.

His new role resulted in his relocation to Chicago in 2021.

CRAIG O’HALLORAN Craig is a Studio Leader and Design Manager at the world’s largest Architecture and Design firm, Gensler. There he comanages a studio of 35 team members working on multiple projects. Hailing from Dublin and a DIT Bolton Street alum, Craig arrived in Chicago in 2016. He lives in Lincoln Park and likes to play/watch anything sport related or try out new restaurants in the city,

DYLAN SHEAHAN Born in Chicago and raised in Killarney, Co. Kerry, Dylan studied Economics & Business at TCD, before making the move back to Chicago. Despite growing up in a family business,The Killarney Brewing and Distilling Company, he works as a Business Analyst. As a new Dad, he doesn’t mind the early morning diaper changes which allow him to watch the rugby games.

DOLORES SIMON - SECRETARY Dede’s career has involved working with C-Suite executives in the Chicagoland corporate, non-profit and international world. Moving to Boston last year, she currently is serving as the Senior Alumni rep for the ND Club of Boston. She is most proud and humbled by the success of her three children and relishes being a fun grandmother to her 6 grandchildren.

JACKIE THEODORE With over two decades of experience as a Senior Project Manager overseeing intricate building projects, Jackie has seamlessly transitioned into her current role as the Program Manager for Custom Home Care, LLC, a distinguished home health care agency serving the Chicago area. Outside of work, she holds a strong affinity for Fighting Illini sports and is an avid music fan.

NORA WALSH - TREASURER A native of Dublin, Nora moved to Chicago before enrolling at Loyola University to earn a degree in Computer Science. She works as VP of Investor Relations for Gas N Wash. Nora is a Board Member for Weish4Ever: The Andrew Weishar Foundation, a nonprofit that supports teens and young adults battling cancer. Nora is delighted to be part of this dynamic IN group.

ORLA CASTANIEN Orla is an executive coach and leadership consultant with over 20 years of leadership in finance, operations and strategy. As an adoptive mom, Orla is active in educating herself in the challenges of being a transracial family, becoming a keen advocate for DEI education to provide leaders with concrete, measurable actions to create a more inclusive culture.

GARRETT DIAMOND Originally from Co. Meath, Garrett has lived in Chicago on and off for nearly 15 years. A DIT hospitality and Tourism Graduate, Garrett initially spent a number of years in the hotel and bar business in Chicago. He is now working as a Sales and Business Development Representative for Stuart Dean Company in Facilities Services. Garrett lives in Oak Park with his wife Katie and their 3 children.

KEN DOOLEY A native of Ireland, Ken spent several years in the English and Irish Banking industry prior to immigrating to Chicago in 1994. In 2000, Ken made the transition into real estate and is one of Chicago’s most sought after real estate professionals–consistently ranked among the top 1% of Brokers for closed transactions by the Chicago Association of Realtors.

IMELDA GALLAGHER Imelda grew up in Galway and lived in Dublin, qualifying as a Barrister, before returning to her native Chicago. She is a Project Management Professional (PMP) in a design engineering company that specializes in building fiber networks for internet connectivity to businesses and residences nationally. Imelda served on the IN Committee for over 10 years holding many roles.

EDWARD GALVIN Edward is responsible for North America B2B Commercial Payments Sales at Visa, working to grow commercial card portfolios. Edward graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Masters of Science from University College Cork. He is a mentor and a certified Co-Active Leadership coach. In addition to the IN Advisory Board, he is also President of the Chicago Irish Film Festival.

CLODAGH LAWLESS For Irish-born entrepreneur Clodagh Lawless, a deep-rooted love of Irish hospitality became a true calling that has seen the success of many of Chicago’s beloved restaurants such as The Gage and Acanto. In 2016, along with her sister Amy, she opened The Dearborn, an ambitious venture in the city’s downtown Loop. Clodagh lives in the Portage Park neighborhood of Chicago with her husband Colm and two sons.

VICE CONSUL PÁDRAIG MANNING Pádraig is the Vice Consul and Deputy Head of Mission at the Consulate General of Ireland, Chicago. During his time with the Department of Foreign Affairs he has worked on the Irish Government’s response to Brexit, North South cooperation, and the Shared Island Initiative. He holds a BA from University College Cork and an MSc from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

RAY MCENTEE Ray is a licensed U.S. attorney and qualified solicitor in Ireland, England, and Wales, leads the Sports and Entertainment Department at McEntee Law Group. He advises on visa and green card options for professionals in these industries and assists clients in obtaining Irish citizenship through foreign birth registration.

BRIAN MOORE Brian has been a member of the Ireland Network since its inception and is a past president. He works in Corporate Finance at Exelon (parent company of ComEd) and lives with his wife Sheila, in Lincoln Park and they have three children Dylan (23), Julia (20) and Olivia (18).

DENIS NEVILLE Denis is founder and CEO of CoreFX Ingredients LLC, a company specializing in the development of turnkey health through nutrition ingredient solutions. With a M.Sc. in Food Science and Technology, Denis has led commercial and technical development roles for the food and beverage industry for over 23 years. Denis’ business philosophy is focused on leading with purpose, creativity and innovation.

DONAL O’BRIEN Donal was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. He attended University College Dublin before emigrating to the United States. He is a partner at the law firm of Bryan Cave Leigton Paiser, LLP where he focuses on mergers and acquisitions and corporate law. He also teaches corporate law at Loyola University Chicago, School of Law.

GARRETT SHERIDAN Garrett is CEO of Lotis Blue Consulting and specializes in working with leaders to develop and execute strategies that drive profitable growth and improve execution. Originally from Dublin, Garrett is a founding member of the Ireland Network.

NIAMH WHELAN-REITER Niamh leads North America Marketing at Avanade bringing focus, creativity and the art of storytelling to help drive growth and results. With a 25+ career that spans Ireland, France and the United States, Niamh is passionate about helping organizations tap into the power of marketing and communications to drive brand awareness and business value. She holds a BS in Business & Marketing Management from Trinity.
