I hope that the beginning of this new decade finds you well and eager to face the challenges ahead. As the College too rounds this important corner, I am delighted to note that we are thriving, and that liberal arts education continues to be a priority for Adelphi University. The College is comprised of an active, collaborative community where faculty, students, and administrators share a commitment to, and belief in, the enduring value of education and learning. Alumni come back regularly to tell us how pleased they are of their Adelphi degree. As you will see from one of this issue’s features, we are proud to count among our respected faculty several who hold Adelphi undergraduate and/or graduate degrees.

As another indication of the University’s continued support of the arts and sciences, this past fall the College welcomed twelve new faculty members with distinguished records of teaching and scholarship.

Do take a look at the “New Faculty” on page three and become acquainted with this talented group. Sadly, this year we say goodbye to our longtime Chair of Sociology, Sally Ridgeway, who will be leaving us at the end of this semester; and to the former Chair of Anthropology, John Vetter, who retired this past summer.

Although you will find a brief tribute to them in this issue, it is impossible to convey to you the extent of their many contributions to the Adelphi community. They will be greatly missed by students and colleagues alike.

We have an exciting roster of cultural events this semester, including Nobel Peace prize-winner Elie Weisel; Ambassador Vanu Gopala Menon, Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations; and author Dr. Robin D. G. Kelley. Please see the calendar in this Newsletter for a listing.

As always, I would like to thank you for allowing us to share our news with you; and a special thanks to those of you who have sent an update of your activities. We enjoy hearing from you and invite you to fill out the enclosed form with your latest news.

Behind the Scenes: Hanna Kim on Location in Gujarat, India I took this photograph on December 14, 2007, outside Amdavad, in the western College of Arts and Indian state of Gujarat. The occasion was the Women’s Festival for the Centenary, Sciences News celebrations of a Hindu devotional community known as “BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha.” The girls are assembled waiting to dance in a musical narration as little birds called “titodi.” One titodi lays her eggs near the sea but Saagar Dev, the sea god, covers these eggs with a large wave. Distressed, the titodi cries for help and implores the sea god to return the eggs. While he refuses, hundreds of titodi come forward and offer to swallow up the sea and dump it elsewhere. Their coordinating head scarves and clothing lend a beautiful effect to the poignant dance of friends who do CAS GoeS not think twice to help each other. The marks on the girls’ foreheads are known as GlobAl bindi (Hindi) or chandalo (Gujarati), and are a common female adornment in India.

Welcome New Faculty Vincent Cardinal

Associate Dean of Performing Arts and Director of the Performing Arts Center

Vincent Cardinal joins Adelphi from the University of Miami, where he served as Chair of the Department of Theatre Arts. In the last eight years, he has been the lead producer on more than 70 fully mounted plays and musicals, including 19 world premieres. Associate Dean Cardinal holds an M.F.A. in Playwriting from Yale University, and a B.S. in Education and English from Kent State University.

Catherine Denisot-Lawrence

Assistant Professor, Department of Dance

Catherine Denisot-Lawrence has performed at such renowned venues as the Metropolitan Opera House and City Center in New York; at the Paris Opera in Paris, France; and at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. Her international teaching experience includes her work as a ballet instructor for the Royal Dutch Conservatory in The Hague, The Netherlands, where she taught all levels of ballet at that nation’s most prestigious dance academy.

Salvatore di Vittorio

Adelphi Symphony Orchestra Director

Salvatore di Vittorio has been named symphony orchestra director at Adelphi. He serves as the music director of the Chamber Orchestra of New York, and has held many composer-in-residence positions for prestigious orchestras around the world. Mr. di Vittorio holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Orchestral Conducting from the London Conducting Workshop, Royal College of Music, an M.A. in Aesthetics Philosophy from Columbia University, and a B.A. in Music from the Manhattan School of Music.

Aaren Freeman

Assistant Professor, Department of Biology

Aaren Freeman holds a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of New Hampshire, an M.S. in Biology from Northeastern University, and a B.A. in Biology from Swarthmore College. He served as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of New Hampshire, where he monitored the health of sea grass ecosystems. He has six peer-reviewed publications and another in press.

Louise Geddes

Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of English

Louise Geddes worked for several years as a literary manager and dramaturge at a theatre company in New York. She holds a Ph.D. in English from the Graduate Center of the City College of New York and a B.A. in Theatre Art and Performance Studies from the University of Warwick. She was previously an Adjunct Lecturer at Baruch College (CUNY).

Mark Grabowski

Assistant Professor, Department of Communications

Mark Grabowski has served as a visiting assistant professor at Marist College, teaching courses in media law, journalism, and public speaking. He has expertise in both online and traditional journalism. Assistant Professor Grabowski holds a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and a B.A. in Political Science from Case Western Reserve University.

Maya Muratov

Assistant Professor, Department of Art and Art History

Maya Muratov holds a Ph.D. in Greek and Roman Art and Archaeology, an M.A. from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and a B.A. in History from Moscow State University. She has served as a lecturer for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Department of Education, an adjunct at City College, CUNY, and as a guest curator at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, New York University.

Magdalena Nawrocka

Assistant Professor, Department of Physics

Magdalena Nawrocka holds a Ph.D. in Physics and an M.S. in Electronics and Telecommunications from Wroclaw University of Technology in Wroclaw, Poland. She was a postdoctoral research fellow at the L’Université du Québec, and as a Visiting Scientist at Florida International University. She has research expertise in solar energy, fiber optic sensors, electronics, and nanophonetics. Dr. Nawrocka has published numerous articles and spoken at several international conferences.

Salvatore Petrilli ’05

Assistant Professor, Mathematics and Computer Science

Salvatore Petrilli holds an Ed.D. in Higher Mathematics Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, an M.A. in Mathematics from Hofstra University, and a B.S. in Mathematics from Adelphi University. He has served as an adjunct faculty member for the Mathematics department, as well as a tutor for the Academic Enrichment Program at Molloy College. He has numerous publications in progress, and is active in various professional associations.

Nicole Rudolph

Assistant Professor, Department of Languages and International Studies

Nicole Rudolph holds a Ph.D. and an M.Phil. in French Studies from New York University, a DEA in Social Sciences from École Normale Supérieure, an M.A. in French Civilization and Culture from NYU, an M.A. in French Language and Literature, and a B.A. in French Language and Literature from the University of Pittsburgh.

Before coming to Adelphi, she was a lecturer in the Department of French and Romance Philology at Columbia University, as well as the Director of Columbia’s Maison Française, and has also taught at New York University and the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Rudolph has authored several articles and has presented papers at professional conferences in the U.S. and abroad.

Brian Stockman

Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry

Brian Stockman comes to Adelphi with 17 years of pharmaceutical research experience. He was an associate research fellow with Pfizer, and has served as a postdoctoral associate at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Stockman has been issued four patents, authored and coauthored more than thirty refereed publications. He holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an M.B.A. from the University of New Haven, and a B.A. in Chemistry and Zoology from the University of Iowa.

Melissa Van Alstine

Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry

Melissa Van Alstine is an experimental organic chemist; she completed postdoctoral research at Albany Medical College and has served as an adjunct organic chemistry lab instructor at Hudson Valley Community College. Dr. Van Alstine holds a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry and a B.S. in Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Rakhel Villamil-Acera

Assistant Professor, Department of Languages and International Studies

Rakhel Villamil-Acera has taught Spanish language and literature at UC Berkeley, Laney College, Emory University, and Universidad de Salamanca. Dr. VillamilAcera holds a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literature from the University of California at Berkeley, an M.A. from Universidad de Salamanca, and a B.A. in Hispanic Philology, Formal Linguistics, and Peninsular Literature from Universidad de Deusto.

Sokthan Yeng

Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy

Sokthan Yeng has taught ethics and philosophy at Oklahoma City University, and speaks Cambodian, French, and German fluently. She has written on business ethics and has numerous presentations. Dr. Yeng has a Ph.D. in Philosophy from DePaul University, a Certificat de Scolarite from Alliance Française, an M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Toledo, and a B.A. from Lebanon Valley College.

The Artists as

Adelphi University has a long history of arts education, with pioneering programs that began in the 1930s. Today, it is flourishing under the guidance of assistant professors Cindy Maguire and Courtney Lee Weida, who take turns running the program each academic year.

In the spring of 2008, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) team, helmed by David Hornung, Chair of the Art and Art History Department, was looking for two people to head the Art Education Department “who were sympathetic to the studio practice, in addition to having an understanding of educational theory,” says Professor Hornung, “Cindy and Courtney best manifested those characteristics.”

Diane Caracciolo, assistant professor in the School of Education, helped integrate the art education department into CAS, as the curriculum is the same as studio art and art history majors for the first two years. “There is a synergy now, with faculty and students pulling as a team,” says Professor Hornung.

Professor Maguire had been teaching art with a core focus on social justice for more than 25 years. “I look at the connections between the arts and identity, service learning, teacher training, and culturally relevant education,” she says, “I aim to contribute to a shift in higher education practice that enables our students to teach children across a multitude of settings.”

A multimedia artist, Professor Maguire draws on her family history and experiences to create individual and collaborative art. “I work with the arts to provide valuable experiences to my students that help them to be the best human beings they can be,” she says.

Recent projects include creating art and poetry books with immigrant high school students; an art education blog (adelphiar ted.blog spot. com) with artist profiles, lesson plans, and jobs; and teaching workshops to faculty and students at an arts center in war-torn Kosovo.

Courtney Lee Weida’s passions combine poetry, pottery, and pedagogy. “I Assistant Professor Courtney Lee Weida (top) and think it is crucial to blend Assistant Professor and current Coordinator of Art Education Cindy Maguire (bottom) teaching with art making, and include hands-on studio activities in my courses,” she says, “it allows students to experiment and to dream within school walls.” She emphasizes human development, sensory experience, equality and gender issues, and aesthetic inquiry.

Since the economic crisis, one major priority for the art education department is to support Adelphi students in job hunting and career planning. “Art educators need to be persuasive advocates for their importance in schools,” says Professor Weida.

“The wonderful resources and atmosphere at Adelphi make me feel continually inspired and supported as a professor,” says Professor Weida, “I cannot think of a more fulfilling vocation than supporting aspiring art teachers at the start of this important journey.”

The PAC is a state-of-the-art academic facility for students and members of the campus and surrounding communities can see presentations of the finest quality. The natural science laboratories provide students with the latest equipment with which to conduct research, under the guidance of our outstanding faculty.”

Swirbul Library Valerie Cardona ’13, Political Science and International Studies Major “… It would definitely be the library because it has saved my life many, many times. It offers online journals and periodicals, and rents out textbooks for any class that we may have.”

Steven Rubin, Dean, College of Arts and Science “I would take a visitor to one of my favorite “secret” spots on campus: the small, outdoor sitting area on the north side of the library. There are benches, a reflecting pool, flowering plants in spring and summer, and always a few birds chirping. It is a lovely place to sit quietly and enjoy a few peaceful moments in the middle of a busy day.”

Les Ballets

Take Center

PAC Serves Up Opera, Family-Style —By Cindy Vaupel ‘96 In December, with an eye towards family programming, the new Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (PAC) staged Gian Carlo Menotti’s holiday opera classic, Amahl and the Night Visitors. “We are surrounded by hundreds of families looking for cultural opportunities for them,” observes Michael Hume, the show’s director and director of the music department at the University.

For many among the younger set, the Adelphi production was their first encounter with live opera. The production was an ideal introduction to the genre, with a storyline based on a familiar tale, accessible music, and a quick narrative arc. Parents and children alike were enthralled.

Originally conceived for live television, Amahl and the Night Visitors was written in 1951 as a holiday television special for NBC. The one-act opera tells the poignant story of a poor mother and Amahl, her young crippled son, who are visited on Christmas night by the Three Kings, looking for a place to rest on their way to visit the infant Jesus. Amahl and his mother are touched by an unexpected miracle on that lifechanging evening.

While Adelphi theatre, music, and dance majors comprised the adult roles in the show, the search for a pre-teen Amahl required outside assistance. After auditioning approximately 25 young boys, Director Hume found the talented 12-year-old Ritayan Chakraborty, who is, coincidentally, the son of Adelphi assistant professor of biology Tandra Chakraborty. “This was a new and wonderful experience for him, it was his first opera…and to be here at Adelphi was like being at a second home,” shared the proud mother.

Ballets Russes was a touchpoint for some of the most significant artists in history. In November of 2009, Adelphi University paid tribute to the revolutionary company on its centennial at Dance Adelphi, featuring performances inspired by composer Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps and Petrouchka.

Diaghilev collaborated with choreographers Vaslav Nijinsky, and George Balanchine; composers Igor Stravinsky, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, and Sergey Prokofiev; artists Henri Matisse, Salvador Dali, and Pablo Picasso; and fashion icon Coco Chanel. Frank Augustyn, dance department chairperson, notes that, “They revolutionized ballet and ballet technique…We owe Les Ballets Russes a huge debt in our own dance field.”

Sacre, choreographed and directed by the renowned Doug Varone, was inspired by the original avante-garde Le Sacre du Printemps. Varone successfully captured the sense of violence and disturbance that made the original so controversial in its day.

A new work by Leda Meredith, her version of Petrouchka, also borrowed from Les Ballets Russes’ original. It captured the basic themes and conflicts, complete with the jealous Moor and puppet Petrouchka both pining over the enchanting Ballerina, set in the 1940s.

“It was a thought-provoking evening for the audience,” mused Director Augustyn, “I hope that we produced a just tribute to Les Ballets Russes and its heritage.”

The Freedom to Find Heresies —By Rebecca Benison ‘11 On October 21, 2009, students and faculty members packed the Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom to hear Freeman Dyson, professor emeritus of physics at Princeton University’s Institute for Advanced Study, deliver “Heretical Thoughts About Science and Society,” the annual Jerry March Memorial Lecture.

“All the fuss of global warming is exaggerated,” said Professor Dyson, a scientific heretic by his own account, as he voiced his controversial opinions on global warming, biotechnology, and nuclear weaponry.

“The number one danger to ourselves and our environment is nuclear weapons,” he said. He added that these weapons are ineffective in preventing or winning a war.

“Removal of our weapons would make the world safer,” he said.

And beyond the threat of nuclear war, perhaps Professor Dyson’s greatest message is that “the future is in the hands of our children and grandchildren, and we should give them the freedom to find their own heresies.”

MY ADELPHI

Bob Schwartz —By Cindy Vaupel ‘96

In the midst of the most significant economic downturn since the Depression, Dr. Robert Schwartz, director of Adelphi’s Office of Pre-Professional Advising and Fellowships (OPPAF), has seen a subtle shift in the attitudes of undergraduates who come to his office for direction and career advice. “We are seeing a greater push towards professional careers because of a changing job market,” observes Dr. Schwartz. When he meets with undergraduates, Dr. Schwartz regularly taps his background in counseling.

An adviser at Kingsborough Community College for 20 years, Dr. Schwartz came to Adelphi in August, 2008, where he guides students toward their desired professional career paths, and oversees the University’s joint degree programs in dentistry, optometry, podiatry, physical therapy, law, engineering, environmental studies, and the newest program in osteopathic medicine. The OPPAF assists and counsels approximately 250 students yearly, including more than 40 who participate in joint degree programs.

School, New York Law School, Brooklyn Law School, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Columbia University, and Stony Brook University Medical School.

While the economy might be driving additional Adelphi students into professional careers, their grounding in the liberal arts provides a critical and solid foundation for further studies. Successful professionals often call upon this broad base in complex work environments. Now more than ever, says Dr. Schwartz, “The professional needs to adapt to change, to be aware of a realm of questions of ethics and morality.” In medicine, there are the “realities of making very difficult decisions. Medicine isn’t just about the technology, you need to know how to utilize it, integrate it, and make thoughtful decisions.”

When students knock on his door, Dr. Schwartz encourages them to discuss their ambitions with him, and helps them to look inward to understand their motivations: “I really see myself as a counselor in the broadest terms. I mostly listen when I’m with a student—you really want to hear them, [and] also make suggestions and see other possibilities.”

Through preceptorships, internships, alumni mentoring, and excursions to partnering professional schools, the Office encourages interested students to immerse themselves in their desired career. Dr. Schwartz envisions additional opportunities for hands-on engagement among Adelphi students, their career, and school of interest. His emphasis is on providing experiences to enrich their education.

“Students come in with an interest; we help them develop a passion,” says Dr. Schwartz.

William Tenet always hoped to fulfill his Greek immigrant parents’ dream that one of their children would become a doctor, and he did. He grew up in a tightly knit community in Queens, proud of his heritage.

His father’s diner was around the corner, and Dr. Tenet and his twin brother worked there throughout high school.

William Tenet ’75 M.D., FACC

The cardiologist credits his parents for instilling in him a strong work ethic and respect for higher learning. “My parents wanted my brother and me to take full advantage of educational opportunities,” Dr. Tenet says.

In 1980, Dr. Tenet returned to the United States to begin his medical career. “I knew I wanted cardiology from the beginning,” he says, inspired to be a cardiologist by his father’s lifelong heart condition.

Dr. Tenet began his academic career in higher education at Adelphi, where he pursued chemistry, before majoring in biology. However, it was the College of Arts and Sciences that had the greatest impact on him.

After completing his internship and residency at New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens (formerly Booth Memorial), he embarked on a fellowship at the University of Connecticut’s Division of Cardiology.

“A liberal arts education stimulated me to read and to be a better writer, as well as a critical thinker,” he says. At Adelphi, he was exposed to philosophy, literature, and genetics. “Jerry March taught me to love organic chemistry and Warren Eickelberg gave me enthusiasm for anatomy,” he says.

Today, Dr. Tenet serves as associate director of cardiovascular medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital, clinical associate professor of medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College, and attending cardiologist at St. Francis Hospital, in addition to CEO of Cardiovascular Associates of New York. “I get a piece of everything; administration, patient care, and academia,” he says. “I like to keep things interesting. Every day is a challenge, and that’s exciting.”

Dr. Tenet savored the opportunity to take Italian, and fondly remembers Professor Romano Giachetti, who opened a whole new world to him. “He brought out the beauty of the language and culture,” he recalls.

The doctor enrolled at the University of Rome’s renowned medical school, which his uncle had also attended. He traveled to Italy in a group of 250 exchange students, and learned about European healthcare practices and socialized medicine. “It was an invaluable experience,” he says of his time abroad.

The cardiologist, named one of 2009’s Best Doctors by New York Magazine, attributes his accomplishments to his experience at the University: “A strong liberal arts education is the key to success,” he says. “I am a better student, citizen, and doctor because of my Adelphi education.”

Today, Dr. Tenet and his wife live in Manhasset and have three daughters. In his spare time, this former member of TKE and sports columnist for The Delphian enjoys a passion for college basketball.

Liberal Arts Thrives What do Laraine Fletcher, Ruth McShane, Salvatore Primeggia, Nicholas Petron, and Salvatore Petrilli have in common?

Besides being beloved Adelphi University faculty and administrators with a collective 141 years of experience, they are proud graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences.

“By living one’s life, one can list on a daily basis the benefits of a broad-based liberal arts education,” says Ruth McShane, ’61 B.S., ’85 M.B.A., ’97 Ph.D., assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, “my entire background in higher education has been achieved at Adelphi and I can cite daily illustrations of such benefits …to anyone who cares to listen to my war stories.”

In the late 1950s, Dean McShane’s father worked at a local gas station and mentioned to a customer that his daughter had applied to Adelphi. “It turned out that she had been a classmate of Ruth S. Harley when Adelphi was still in Brooklyn,” she says, “When I got to Adelphi, Ruth Harley, the Dean of Women, called me by my first name. It made me very comfortable.”

Laraine Fletcher, ’61 B.A., the newly appointed chair of the Anthropology department, was a Spanish major who has been teaching at Adelphi since 1979. “I feel very strongly that when I meet people who are so focused, they are very narrow people in many ways,” she says.

After graduation, Professor Fletcher joined the Peace Corps in Colombia and traveled to Europe on a shoestring. She has been working with the same Maya people in Mexico for 35 years, where she learned the native Yucatec language. Professor Fletcher brings all of these experiences into her teaching.

“Taking comparative literature and social science courses makes you a different kind of person—anthropology is very important to understand other cultures,” explains Professor Fletcher.

“This is like a second home. After Sally Ridgeway retires this year, I’ll be the last remaining faculty from the Cave Period,” says Salvatore Primeggia, ’64 B.A., ’66 M.A., Professor of Sociology, “new faculty come from different areas of expertise and make the department that much stronger—it’s important to be viable, up-to-date, and doing the good work.”

He remarks that Adelphi as an institution stresses the classroom, the teaching, and the importance of the students, who are not just a check through the door. “I believe that the majority of the faculty are concerned about the students, and I’m very good and very humble,” Professor Primeggia jokes.

His courses on the Italian-American experience are wildly popular. “The stories tend to be the same, especially with immigration running through the generations no matter what your background is,” Professor Primeggia says, “if your relatives came in a hundred years ago or last week. A lot of the same sociological processes take place.”

Professor Primeggia stresses that a liberal arts background helps students to think independently and critically, and to know more about the world. “There are very few direct links, to go from here to a specific field,” he says, “The jobs aren’t there now so [graduates] are going to have to be more creative selling themselves and whatever talents they do have—but my money is on them.”

Not everyone knows at seventeen what they want to do when they grow up, but Nicholas Petron, ’70 M.A., professor and chair of the Performing Arts Department, was one of the lucky ones. “I knew then that I wanted to be in theatre,” he says, “I think it was probably being an altar boy in church, doing the rituals.”

In 1963, Professor Petron was accepted to Adelphi’s summer program. “They produced six to eight shows in a twelve week period,” he recalls, “It was a lot of work, but it reinforced that I had the ability to do it.” Seven years later, he returned to Adelphi for his graduate work and began teaching cabaret theatre in 1973.

“It has been a joy and pleasure to be able to steer this department,” says Professor Petron, “I hope to continue to do that until my hair grows back.” He explains that when the economy goes down, entertainment becomes very important. “It’s about taking people out of their everyday woes,” he says, “Theatre and film informs and teaches, so I believe it will be around forever.”

Professor Petron relates that the teaching at Adelphi is, in a word, spectacular. “We are not a research institution, but a teaching institution, which has always been treasured and supported,” he comments and adds that he is very pleased with the Performing Arts Center that is his new home.

Whoever decided that math teachers aren’t fun, hasn’t met Salvatore Petrilli, Jr., ’05 B.S., assistant professor of Mathematics and Computer Science. The self-professed Snoopy fan brought his stuffed baby seal toy to his freshman Calculus One course and introduced him as “George” the class mascot. “I’ll do whatever it takes to draw the students in,” he explains, “Once you have that connection, they are going to listen, participate, and want to learn.”

With a doctorate in higher mathematics education, Professor Petrilli encourages his students to collaborate on research and present their findings at conferences. Always a math wiz, he had a ninth-grade teacher who belittled him, and his grades went downhill. A tutor turned everything around for him and said, “You can do this.” “I saw the power of just one person to influence me and that made me love education,” Professor Petrilli says.

“I see a lot of opportunities to do good things for the students here,” Professor Petrilli says, “Anybody can do mathematics—the most important thing they need to do when they go out into the real world is to be independent thinkers.”

Student Highlights Adelphi’s Chemistry Club participated in National Chemistry Week, sponsored by the American Chemical Society. The event took place October 2009 at the New York Hall of Science. Club members presented noteworthy chemical experiments to K-12 students and their parents.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Adelphi Chapter of the Society of Physics Students was named an Outstanding Chapter of the Society of Physics Students. This year, Adelphi is one of 58 chapters out of more than 700 to receive this prestigious honor.

In summer 2009, under the guidance of Professor Anagnostis Agelarakis, Adelphi anthropology and environmental studies majors, Kristen Barde ’10, Tricia Basdeo ’12, Danielle Bissett ’11, Kembly Cerdas ’10, and Melina Giakoumis ’10, participated in the excavation of a ninth century BC necropolis in Eleutherna, Crete. This site has been recognized by Archaeology Magazine, to be one of the “top ten discoveries of 2009.”

Math majors Jaclyn Bogensberger ’11 and Shannon Zeckzer ’10 presented their research at the national meeting of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and The American Mathematical Society (AMS), held in San Francisco in January 2010. These joint meetings are the largest such gathering in the country, drawing more than 6,000 attendees each year.

Ashley Casella ’10, Jennifer Cohen ’10, Elina Kats ’11, Stelios Karakonstantis ’10, and Marissa Wolf ’09, presented their papers at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research (NCUR) at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, in spring 2009. Ms. Cohen, Mr. Karakonstantis, Ms. Wolf, and Diana Molenko ’10 presented their research at the Adelphi Conference for Undergraduate Research in spring 2009.

Bradley Cohen ’10 and Kristen Barde ’10 have co-authored a poster presentation with Professor Anagnostis Agelarakis, which will be given at the annual North American Meeting of the Paleopathology Association in Albuquerque, NM, in April 2010. The title of this presentation is “A Stafne Cavity on a 7th c. BC Klazomenean Hoplite Warrior.”

Last summer, 2009’s Outstanding First Year Student Award winner Justin Dove ’12, participated in a National Science Foundation sponsored Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. The program, which focused on Quantum Information Theory, was held at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania.

Melina Giakoumis ’10 co-authored a poster presentation with Professor Anagnostis Agelarakis, titled “Kastro Kalybes in Thrace: Military Life at an Ancient Greek Fort.” Melina presented it at the joint meetings of the Archaeological Institute of America and the American Philological Association, in January 2010 in California.

English major Christina Illig ’10 had her paper, “Patriarchy and Power: The Parent-Child Relationship in Shakespeare’s Othello, King Lear and Macbeth” accepted for the Second Annual Undergraduate Research Conference, held at the Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies.

Thanks to the hard work and superb leadership of President Nicole Jacoberger ’10 and Executive Board members Mike Cataldo ’10, Jennifer Cohen ’10, Chris Hoffman ’11, and Nick Tomasso ’10, the Student History Society at Adelphi now has official SGA recognition as a club.

In fall 2009, political science majors Shayna Farese ’10 and Martin Vladimirov ’11 attended the 61st annual Student Conference on United States Affairs (SCUSA), held at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. The international event hosted hundreds of cadets and students, who interacted with military and civilian leaders. Roundtable teams examined terrorism and extremism in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and struggles in African countries.

Mr. Vladimirov’s group tackled Russian issues, and he declares “the conference was an amazing opportunity to exchange ideas with fellow students. It changed my life, and made me even more committed to making a difference on Adelphi’s campus.” Ms. Farese focused on Africa. “Meeting with people who have lived through and experienced these struggles was life-changing,” she says. The students recommended reforming current U.S. foreign policy.

America Reads/America Counts— A Two-Way Learning Experience

“Knowing I could be part of helping these kids grow intellectually means the world to me, and that was the most rewarding thing,” recalls Reaz Khan ’13, as he reflects on his experience working as a tutor for America Reads/America Counts.

America Reads is a national campaign that challenges Americans to help children learn to read well and independently, and America Counts is designed to improve student achievement in mathematics. Both aim to assist children by the time they complete elementary school.

Offered through Adelphi’s Center for Career Development, both programs have nearly 100 undergraduate and graduate Adelphi student tutors from all academic disciplines participating at local elementary schools. Nationally, there are more than 1,200 colleges and universities in America Reads, and 300 in America Counts.

Stephanie Brunot ’13, also an America Reads/America Counts tutor, shares a similar outlook to Mr. Khan. “I used to tutor at my elementary school when I was in high school, and thought it would be a great thing to continue,” she says.

Both Mr. Khan and Ms. Brunot joined the program in fall 2009, and were attracted by one of the position’s main requirements—must enjoy working with children.

“Connecting with children is definitely not an easy thing, but it’s something America Reads has helped me accomplish,” says Mr. Khan, an International Studies major and degree candidate in Adelphi’s STEP program. “Between classes and working for America Reads/America Counts, I’ve learned how to manage my time a lot better,” adds Ms. Brunot.

The tutoring experience has provided an eye-opening glimpse into this younger generation, Mr. Khan asserts, “It’s interesting to see that with generations, come changes in thought. I don’t remember in my days of elementary school talking about the things second graders talk about today, or knowing half the things they know.”

Ultimately, it’s the selfless desire to make a difference in a child’s life that provides the most powerful motivator and reward. “Some people get into it for the money, but it’s more than that. You’re really helping them learn, and it stays with them for the rest of their lives,” says Ms. Brunot.

Judith Baumel (English) received the Adelphi University President’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service in 2009 and was elected to a four-year term on the Board of the Association of Writers & Writing Programs. He was also the co-recipient of the “Teachers of Mathematics Scholarships,” Noyce award from the National Science Foundation in the amount of $900,000 from 2009 to 2014. Professor Bradley wrote the following articles in the forthcoming book, How Euler Did it II: “Did Euler Prove Cramer’s Theorem?” and “The Moon and the Differential.” He also wrote reviews of “Lacroix and the Calculus” and “Leonhard Euler: Incomparable Géomètre” in Historia Mathematica. He was an invited guest speaker at Oxford, the University of Victoria, and Roger Williams University.

Susan Briziarelli (Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences) wrote “What’s In a Name? Art and art history professor Thomas McAnulty, the recipient of Adelphi University’s Teaching Excellence Award for 2009 to 2010, is a dedicated artist as well as an educator. In 2004 he bridged these two passions by joining with two former faculty members to found and lead, “Adelphi in Florence: Experiencing the Renaissance.” Today

“The experience is a very intense involvement with another time and another culture,” says Professor McAnulty. “The students also bump up against the people, the culture, and the food…which opens avenues of appreciation that can only be experienced by being there.”

Professor McAnulty’s esteem for art also extends into his personal life, as he has been honing his skills in the field for the past 40 years. Though he is most well-known for his sculpting, he also enjoys drawing, and takes inspiration from the world around him and its many facets of light and space.

“There are times when the process of making something just carries me along,” Professor McAnulty says, “I keep trying to get out of my own way and let whatever happens, happen.”

Melissa Van Alstine (Chemistry), with L. B. Igor Webb (English) authored a review of “The Death Paintings” in the Notre Dame Review, January 2010, and wrote Rereading the Nineteenth Century: Studies in the Old Criticism from Austen to Lawrence, published by Palgrave Macmillan in March 2010.

Cristina Zaccarini (History) presented a paper, “Christian Missionary Sources and Chinese Healing Practices,” at the MARAAS 38th annual conference at Villanova University in October 2009. She was invited by American University’s Patrick Clendenen and Pamela S. Nadell to contribute a chapter to an upcoming book about the intellectual production of women’s history in national settings. Her article, “Modern Medicine in 20th Century Jiangxi, Anhui, Fujian and Sichuan: Competition, Negotiation and Cooperation,” will appear in the Social History of Medicine this year.

Newlin Brings Harmonious Notes to Adelphi Ode to Joy and Scholarship

Music comes naturally to Georgia Newlin, Adelphi’s new Coordinator of Music Education and Assistant Professor of Music.

The former tuba major (yes, really) grew up in Southeastern Pennsylvania, in a large Scotch-Irish and English-German family, where everyone from her parents and four siblings, to fifteen first cousins sang and played folk music together.

Professor Newlin, who has three music degrees and a 15-year teaching history with preschoolers through adults, has literally passed that musical legacy on to her own children. Daughters Liza and Sylvie were named for traditional American folk songs: “Little Liza Jane” and “Bring Me Little Water Sylvie.” Professor Newlin’s carpenter father is not only a musician, but also makes instruments, including the dulcimer she plays at right and in class.

“Georgia was the unanimous choice of the search committee,” says Michael Hume, Director of Music; “During her interview day, Georgia was clearly an engaging and dynamic teacher, who not only knew her material, but was prepared to communicate it effectively.”

Mr. Hume explains that the Kodály philosophy is a timehonored method with a proven international track record.

“Georgia, [the current president] of the Organization of American Kodály Educators, is in a strong position to advocate for Adelphi graduates, “ he says, “and to speak directly to potential students about [its] strengths and benefits.”

The core of Professor Newlin’s teaching is based on the philosophy and vision of Hungarian composer and educator Zoltán Kodály, who collected native folk music throughout Hungary during the 1920s and 1930s. He used it to teach young children music literacy, while simultaneously reinforcing Hungary’s endangered cultural identity.

“The American Dream is based on education, and people that are well-educated know that it is not just reading, writing, and doing math that puts you ahead, but being a whole person,” Professor Newlin explains. The curriculum includes “Literacy for Music Majors,” which will allow Adelphi’s graduates to be part of a team teaching K-12 music literacy. “When administrators are hiring and see that students are looking into integrating the whole child, they will be really interested,” she says, “We’re looking at various ways for Adelphi students to have that edge and advantage.”

“This country is made up of so many different ethnicities and cultures,” says Professor Newlin, “At Adelphi, students share the music of their mother tongue in the classroom and become the expert in that language. They live it to learn it with their peers.”

Music Education students get to teach every week and sometimes every class period. “Because I love and grew up in music, I can share my experiences with them,” Professor Newlin says, “if you didn’t have that as a kid, then let’s start right now, keep going, and have you be a musician all the time.”

A Tribute to Sally Ridgeway —By Lauren Kalish

Associate Professor Sally Ridgeway, a valued Adelphi faculty member for 35 years, and Chair of the Department of Sociology, will be retiring from the University this year.

Her broad focus of interests range from the study of museums as social institutions, to popular culture and film, to researching and writing about family in the suburbs, which led to an appearance on The Phil Donahue Show, which she deems the 70s Oprah.

Over the years, Professor Ridgeway’s role has shifted from faculty member to administrator stemming from her interest in and involvement with student advisement and mentoring.

She has served as associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as associate provost, where she was a key contributor to the renewal of student academic services.

“Sally will definitely be missed, but we are fortunate to have a legacy of extraordinary commitment and accomplishment to remember and build upon,” says Adelphi Provost and Senior Vice President For Academic Affairs Gayle Insler.

She always remained closely rooted to sociology, and is pleased to see that it’s a field that continues to grow and attract more undergraduate majors.

It’s evident that Professor Ridgeway has made a tremendous impact on Adelphi and her students.

“Sally and I have been here over 30 years, and she has always been so supportive,” says Laraine Fletcher, professor and chair of the Department of Anthropology.

Former student Bernadette Mearini ’03 recalls the importance of Professor Ridgeway’s speaking from “personal experiences and from the heart,” which “created a bond with her students, allowing a freedom of expression,” she says, adding, “This is very important to growing minds, because as young adults many of us feel as if we are never heard.”

Long-time friend and colleague Regina Axelrod, professor and chair of the Department of Political Science, states “Sally has been a priceless asset of Adelphi University.”

“I will always be grateful to Sally for her support and I will continue to look up to her as someone whose compassion is rivaled only by her industriousness,” says Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Joseph DeGearo.

“Her rapport with students is legendary, [alumni] still come back to talk about how much Professor Ridgeway’s kindness, sense of humor, and stimulating courses altered the trajectory of their lives,” says Stephanie Lake, Criminal Justice Program Director.

Ruth McShane, assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, points out, “Sally has always been a mentor to junior faculty, focusing on their strengths, and nurturing the confidence necessary for them to flourish in academia.”

For her retirement, Professor Ridgeway plans to keep busy.

“I will continue to teach occasionally, and I am involved with a soup kitchen,” she says. “Opportunities tend to emerge at almost any time, and so I doubt I will be bored.”

Professor John Vetter —By Abi Browne ’10 Upon returning to campus last fall, students were disappointed to hear that after 50 years of service, Professor John Vetter, chair of the Department of Anthropology, had retired. With a background concentration in archaeology, Professor Vetter has worked on excavations from Alaska to the Caribbean, and currently serves as the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s National Expert in Archaeology and Historic Preservation.

For many years, Professor Vetter was the mainstay and chair of Adelphi’s anthropology department. Along with Professors Richard Lund and Anognostis Agelarakis, he developed the University’s Environmental Studies Program and founded the Adelphi Environmental Action Coalition, for which he served as the faculty adviser.

A tremendously popular and gifted instructor, Professor Vetter has always provided hands-on experiences for his students. For almost two decades, his classes met on weekends to carry out excavations at a site on the North Shore of Long Island, which dates back over 2,000 years. Because of his research relationship with the Long Island Science Museum, Professor Vetter provided his archaeology students with an

invaluable look at both the nature of prehistoric settlements, and the excitement of professional field work through hand excavation, screening, and laboratory analysis.

John Vetter has been described by Fawn Abt, one of his former students, as “a brilliant man, whose relaxed manner and sense of humor kept his classrooms filled to capacity.”

Steven J. Rubin, Acting Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences states, “he was a congenial colleague, a noted archaeologist, and an engaging instructor. The College of Arts and Sciences will miss his leadership, his intelligence, and his companionship.”

When asked about his plans for the future, Professor Vetter responded with, “no doubt, more of the same variety of wide ranging archaeological adventures. I was never much good at doing one thing!”

Recently, he has been quite busy with the Hudson River PCB cleanup, where the dredging of the river bottom has the potential to impact historic ship-related artifacts.

Further adventures include exploring abandoned mining sites in the West, and researching the effects of modern wind tower construction on historic view sheds.

Alumni Updates Sydney (Blades) Rehkamp ’42 is a retired elementary school teacher, volunteering with the Flanders Nature Center and the Pomperaug Woods Health Center in Southbury, Connecticut. She also reads at local elementary schools.

Helga Swanson ’42 wrote Can Prisons and Prisoners be Saved.

For the past 10 years she has corresponded with four prison inmates who have the potential to make positive changes in their lives.

Jacqueline (Kurzon) Bellsey ’45 retired from IBM and was widowed in February 2007. She married Lee Starr in November 2008.

Renee Simon ’47 is chair of the Long Beach, California, Transit Company’s Board of Directors, and is being honored by the Jewish Family and Children’s Service.

Ruth Karlin ’50 is the proud grandmother of six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Sarah (Cifarelli) Wellen ’51, ’74 M.A. had a poem published in the Oasis anthology.

Joan (Howell) Bennett ’52 is volunteering following the loss of her husband, Robert T. Bennett. She visits her daughter in Long Island, who also attended Adelphi, and her sons, one of whom is the Town Selectman in Richmond Hill, New York.

Joyce Dutka ’53 was recognized by Cambridge Who’s Who for her dedication in grant coordination and outreach services as president of the Joyce Dutka Arts Foundation, Inc. and jdutka.com. Ms. Dutka holds a master’s degree in speech teacher education from City University of New York at Lehman College.

Carol (Hirschfeld) Hochberg ’56 is the widow of the late Burt Hochberg, who had been elected into the United States Chess Federation’s Chess Hall of Fame.

Alfred Urban ’57, ’80 M.S. was appointed by the French government as a chevalier of the French Legion of Honor on November 11, 2009, one of 11 American combat veterans honored. He was later given a citation by the Mayor of Garden City, for his service as deputy mayor and village trustee.

Thomas Moylett ’57 is living in South Carolina, where he is enjoying the area, the weather, and retired life.

Raul daSilva ’58 has written seven books, and won first place in a national book festival.

Martha Shupack Jantho ’59 is the former vice president of the Chicago Board of Education. Ms. Jantho is happily retired and volunteering in civic organizations, public radio, and theatres.

Steven W. Wolfe ’59 graduated from Adelphi University 50 years ago and from Columbia Law School 47 years ago.

He is still practicing law in Manhattan, New York, where he resides.

Louis Confessore ’60, ’66 M.A. has been coaching United States Youth Soccer for 47 years. He founded Coral Estates Soccer Club and coaches for the boys teams.

Robert E. Ziebarth ’60 is celebrating 10 years as a retired teacher and has two grandsons.

Eve J. Blohm ’64 is an artist, writer, and investor who has been recognized by Cambridge Who’s Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of authorship.

Geraldine (Gerry) McKey ’64 is 80 years old and teaches yoga at the Locust Valley Library in New York, and leads groups to Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Massachusettes.

Laurence Kessler ’65 has been elected to Adelphi’s Board of Trustees. He is also the founder and chief executive of

Kessler Restaurants, as well as a Burger King and Friendly’s franchisee. He will serve on the board’s advancement, finance, and administration committees.

William (Bill) M. Greenhut ’66 oversees four ultrasound locations for Crystal Run Healthcare and teaches “Ultrasound of the Neonatal Brain” at SUNY Downstate College of Medicine.

William Sarna ’66 has been vice president in sales and marketing at Bargoose Home Textiles since January 1, 2006.

Warren Vanderbeek ’66 M.S. teaches math at Suffolk County Community College.

Susan (Miller) Astor ’67 welcomed her first grandchild in January 2010. Her second collection of poetry, Spider Lies (Tremble Press), was published in 2003.

Keith Denton ’67 is now semi-retired and enjoys traveling.

His son got married this past October.

Roberta Synowiec ’67 M.S. was in the December 1, 2009, News Herald, which described her chiropractic approach of using just her hands, known as the Logan Basic Technique.

In 2005, she graduated from Logan College of Chiropractic, and started her own practice, the Grosse Ile Family Chiropractic.

Ruben Friedman ’68, ’70 M.A. is an adjunct professor of English at Nassau Community College. His daughter, Lauren, earned her master’s degree from Adelphi in 2008, and his son, David, graduated from SUNY Albany. Mr. Friedman is retired and involved with the Adjunct Faculty Association (AFA) He and his wife, Bonnie, love to travel.

Thomas Carras ’68 is a faculty trainer for Kaplan University.

John Madson ’69, ’78 M.B.A. has been happily married to Jacqueline Coghlan Madson for 39 years. They have three children and seven grandchildren. Mr. Madson is currently employed by General Utilities, Plainview, New York.

Linda Call Luca ’70 has been the director of dance at the Phillips Exeter Academy since 1973.

Edward Kilgus ’70 is now in 18 Who’s Who categories, including Marquis Who’s Who in the World 2010, and Marquis Who’s Who in America 2010.

Joseph Westphal ’70 became the 30th Under Secretary of the U.S. Army on September 21, 2009, after being nominated by President Obama. He was a political science professor at the University of Maine; and served on the Obama transition team for national security.

Barbara Lipman-Wulf ’71 became a grandmother in 2004.

Michael Shapiro ’77 is self-employed.

Madeleine Mandel Tiktin ’71 continues to enjoy her retirement after 33 years of elementary school music teaching.

Brian Schneider ’78, ’81 M.S. is an architect and hydrologist for Nassau County, New York. His association with Herricks Pond Park was in a New Hyde Park Illustrated article on November 13, 2009.

Bob Beamon ’72 was featured in the November 2, 2009, El Paso Times, which highlighted his gold medal-winning long jump in the 1968 Mexico City Summer Olympics.

Barbara Bel ’73 has been named president of the Westchester Chapter of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA). She is a tax partner with Eisman, Zucker, Klein & Ruttenberg LLP in White Plains, New York.

Enid Borden ’73 M.A. is the president of Meals on Wheels Association of America, and delivered a speech at the Chautauqua County Nutrition Summit in 2009.

She is recognizes by Who’s Who in the Media and Communications.

Alice Hoffman ’73 has published 28 books. Her novel, Here on Earth, was an Oprah’s Book Club choice, and two of her novels, Practical Magic and Aquamarine, were made into Hollywood films. Her latest novel is The Story Sisters.

Benjamin Berkley ’74 is a veteran divorce lawyer and wrote Before You Say ‘I Do’ Again: A Buyer’s Beware Guide to Remarriage.

Naphtali Bruce ’75 is hoping to publish a book of his poetry and a memoir. He is also considering a relocation from Nashville, Tennessee.

Richard Haffey ’75 M.A. announces his first publicly published novel, Love Song. He and his wife are residents of Southeastern Connecticut who vacation in Cape Cod, Massachusettes. He has been a small business co-owner.

Joan Scerbo ’75 is teaching college level Italian and French at Somers High School, Northern Westchester, NY. Diane Wesson ’75 M.A. earned her M.B.A. at Kean University this year, and was recently elected vice president of the Phi Beta Kappa Association of New York.

Joan Capua ’76 has offered to participate in a “Career Boot Camp” in the Backpack to Briefcase C.O.A.C.H. program at Adelphi.

John Cross ’76 attended Hofstra University under their federal work-study program, for a bachelor’s degree in computer science.

Robert A. Gianguzzi ’77 is a cardiac exercise physiologist.

He was recently appointed as cardiovascular executive for the John C. Lincoln Health System.

Liz Alicea-Velez ’78 is the executive vice president Latin America/Caribbean, at Western Union. In 2001, she was named one of the Top 50 Hispanic Women in Business, and in 2007 was one of the 100 most Influential Hispanics in the United States.

Philip Cicero ’78 M.A. is a retired superintendent of the Lynbrook Public Schools in New York, and an adjunct professor of education at Adelphi.

Cheryl (Daniels) Glenn ’78 M.S. was unanimously elected vice chairperson of the Pike County Democratic Committee.

Previously, Ms. Glenn was the committee’s treasurer.

Jane M. Setteducato-Morrison ’78 has been married for 22 years and has two children, ages 9 and 14.

Amy Beth Dattner ’79 M.A. completed nine years as a guidance counselor at a high school in Long Island City.

Alice (Fahr) Steinheimer ’79 M.S. is the new director of special service for Lakeview Elementary School in Denville, New Jersey, and has 29 years of special education experience.

Constance Hayes ’80, ’84 M.S. is a retired principal from an elementary school in the Sachem School District in Holbrook. Ms. Hayes is also a grandmother of five.

Michelle Mach ’80, ’84 M.A. is the coordinator for the Longview School of Montgomery County Public Schools in Germantown, Maryland, and was named the Cambridge Who’s Who Professional of the Year in Education.

Catherine (Kilfoyle) Duffy ’81, ’86 M.S. is the Three Village Central School District’s summer reading coordinator, as well as chair of the English department at Murphy Junior High School.

Rita Pochter-Lowe ’81 M.S. recently retired from the New York City Department of Education as a special education and biology teacher. Ms. Pochter-Lowe is interested in pursuing part-time work in special education and/or transition services for students.

Joseph Ferrari ’85 M.A., ’89 Ph.D. was awarded DePaul University’s Excellence in Public Service 2009 Award, which is the highest honor for faculty.

Justin Bond ’85 was featured on NY1. In his “One on 1 with Budd Mishkin” interview, Mr. Bond explained how his character was an important part of growing up and finding himself within the gay community.

J. Scott Colesanti ’85 is an assistant professor at the Hofstra University School of Law. He recently taught, “International Financial Crimes” at the Max Planck Institute in Freiburg, Germany.

Stephen S. Salmieri ’85 has won numerous teaching awards at the SUNY Stony Brook and is also involved with cancer research.

Alice Crowe ’86 is an attorney at Crowe & Crowe, a writer, entrepreneur, and owner of Emmaline’s Specialty, Inc, and is currently producing a documentary, Secrets of the Hollow: The Hidden History of Blacks in Rockland County.

Robert Weiss ’86 presented “Healthy Hearing and Balance: Maintaining an Active Lifestyle,” at the Norwalk Senior Center in Norwalk, Connecticut. He is in private practice and devotes much of his time to the treatment of balance and dizziness disorders.

Tami Wankoff ’87 married Staff Sergeant Bigness in September 2008. She was promoted to the position of national direction at C3 USA, which helps businesses identify cost-savings and billing errors from telecommunication providers.

Richard Galante ’88 joined the staff of Scirocco Group, a risk management and insurance brokerage firm in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, where he will serve as the senior marketing executive.

Gregory Piccioli ’89 is an Emmy-nominated daytime talk show producer at The View since 2004, and has worked with Geraldo Rivera, John Walsh, and Sally Jessy Raphael.

Kelly (Cass) Boland ’90 is an on-air meteorologist for The Weather Channel since 2000. She lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her husband, Kevin, and their three children.

Mostafa El Sehamy ’90 M.S. founded Hydro Tech Environmental,which provides environmentally conscious consulting and contracting services. He was a regulator for

the Nassau County Department of Health, a field geologist, and a contractor.

Ramon Recalde ’90 has been the controller at a wholesaler in New York for the past 12 years. Previously, he served as a diplomat for the government of Ecuador in New York.

He and his wife, Colette, who is also an Adelphi graduate, have four children.

Karen Mirko ’92 is the director of the New York City Business Solutions, Lower Manhattan Center operated by Seedco.

Robert Hollweg ’94 married Dr. Maria Efstathiou in a Greek Orthodox church in her father’s hometown in Paphos, Cyprus, on May 23, 2009. Their wedding at the Aquamare Hotel overlooked the Mediterranean.

Eduardo Vilaro ’95 is the founder of the Luna Negra Dance Theater and his work has been commissioned by the Ravinia Festival, the Chicago Sinfonietta, and the Lexington Ballet.

Andrew Block ’96 has been the director at the Rogue Machine Theatre in Los Angeles since its first production, “Compleat Female Stage Beauty,” where he portrayed Samuel Pepys.

Zephyr Belski ’98 is an engineer/troubleshooter for Humanscale Corporation in New Jersey, which manufactures ergonomic office furniture. He is passionate about sports car racing and is a driver and instructor.

Melanie Hendry ’98 is an associate in Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C.’s litigation and dispute resolution department.

Lauren E. (Pellegrino) Hamill ’99 is pursuing her master’s degree in music therapy and is working in the athletic department of the College of New Rochelle.

Dorothy A. MacGregor ’00, ’01 M.A. is in the process of obtaining a doctorate degree in education with an emphasis in fine and visual arts.

David Chau ’08 M.S. is a student in the University of Houston’s Optometry Program with an expected graduation in 2012.

Tamara (Ladd) Fischer ’04 married Michael Fischer ’04 B.F.A. in October 2008. They met at Adelphi and were both technical design/theatre majors.

Daniel Cronin ’08 works as a consultant for the Department of Energy under the auspices of D&R International, focusing on the Energy Star program.

Chelle Buffone ’06 will spend the next nine months completing the Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs (FPPA). Ms. Buffone wants to transform her community, and aspires to have a seat in the United States Congress.

Maegan Delgiudice ’08 is studying at Touro Law Center and is interning for the Long Island Advocacy Center.

David Fuller ’06 works at the United Way at Central and Northeastern Connecticut as a data analyst, the deputy campaign director for Stratford, Connecticut’s Mayor James Miron, and serves as the Stratford Democratic Town Committee treasurer. He is also attending pursuing a master’s in media relations.

Kelly Gelling ’06 and her partner, Jennifer O’Gorman, just bought their first house. Ms. Gelling has also authored four entries in the Encyclopedia of International Relations, which is being published by CQ Press in the fall.

David Pengel ’06 works at Lebanese American University’s American development office.

Frances Woodard ’06 is enrolled in a Spanish class while studying for the GRE. She hopes to pursue a master’s degree in international affairs.

Lawrence Fried ’07 completed a scholarly paper on stem cell therapies for Parkinson’s disease, as part of his master’s degree at Adelphi, and entered Drexel University Medical School in the class of 2011.

Christian Fundo ’07 is in his second year of law school at Cornell University and made the Cornell Law Review. He also has an offer from Schulte, Roth & Zabel to join their summer program, and is waiting to hear from other firms.

Kristen (Meierdiercks) Kallon ’07, ’09 M.A. got married to Abass Kallon on September 25, 2009.

Brett Garfinkel ’08 is the assistant director, choreographer, and rehearsal director for LMProject and Elan Dance Theater.

John Gherlone ’08 is in his second year at Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Michigan.

Ashley (Noveck) Ortiz ’08 and her husband are moving to Seattle, Washington. Ms. Ortiz is about to take the GRE and is applying to graduate school in Washington to get her master’s in education.

Anthony Rotundo ’08 is teaching at Palisades Park Junior/ Senior High School. Anthony recently became engaged to Bernadette Marcelo, and they are planning a wedding for July of 2011.

Irry Toh ’08 is in her second semester of law school at the University of Melbourne, in Australia. She was admitted to the editorial board of the Melbourne Journal of International Law and will be interning at an international law firm in Taiwan this summer.

Adaeze Udoji ’08 at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University. She will also be attending a corporate governance program at Oxford University this summer and a corporate and intellectual property program in China.

Achala Jayasena’09 M.S. and Kethika Kulleperuma’09 M.S., friends from Sri Lanka, are both Ph.D. students.

Ms. Jayasena is in the doctoral program in plant pathology at Iowa State University. Ms. Kulleperuma’s is at the University of Toronto.

Loose Ends: Q&A with Professor Sean Bentley

What made you choose physics as a field of study?

During my sophomore year of college, I became inspired to study optics and physics by one of my professors at Missouri University of Science & Technology.

What supernatural ability would you like to have?

The ability to fly. It would it be fun, and could make my commute much nicer.

What is your favorite amusement park?

Disney World; the weather is great and I’ve always been a fan of talking animals.

If you could go back in time and alter an event to change the course of history, which would it be?

There are decisions I made that I regret and wish I could go back and change, but everything has in some way led to where I am now—a place where I’m quite happy.

Where is the place that you find the most peace?

My backyard deck on a warm summer day with my wife and dogs, sitting in the swing reading a book, while grilling hamburgers.

If you were trapped on a desert island with one person and one thing, who and what would it be?

My wife and a fishing pole.

Who inspires you?

I’ve always found my inspiration from those I know personally; not from famous or historical figures.

If someone were to write a book on your life, what would be the part of you that the writer should capture?

How I’ve affected others’ lives. I hope that there will be people who will be happy to have known me.

What is your favorite childhood memory?

No one memory, just lots of good memories of family, food, and fun. In many ways I still feel like a kid, and hope I always will.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Never do anything I don’t want my family and friends to know about.
