Hot enough for you? It really is as we release Issue 70. Plenty to delve into but the highlight of this issue is undoubtedly Jack Roche who was honoured in Bruach na Carraige, Rockchapel recently. The Discover Duhallow team wish to congratulate the great man on an illustrious life and time serving Duhallow.

Two other legendary Duhallow men feature also - entrepreneur Noel C. Duggan, Millstreet Town, and the patron of local road bowling, Con Kelleher, Kilcorney. They met to talk about a picture taken 66 years ago of both men with the Millstreet Senior Football team. Today, they are the last surviving players in that photo. I was honoured to spend time with both men who are both approaching 90 years old!

Community News Air Ambulance Fundraiser Dance There will be a Fundraiser Dance in aid of the Irish Community Air Ambulance in the CYMS Centre, Newmarket.

Electric Vehicle Charging Station urgently needed in Millstreet The Councillors’ of the region’s Municipal District are seeking the installation of charging stations in all key villages in the Municipal District such as Millstreet, Coachford, Kilumney, Ballingeary and Ballyvourney.

There are only two charging points within the Municipal District, both of which are in Macroom town. Councillor Eileen Lynch said “I raised this motion following a recent incident where I was contacted by someone who was stranded in Millstreet with a 4% battery in their car which wouldn’t be enough to take them to the nearest charging station in Macroom or Kanturk. Luckily a local businessman was able to help out and the driver was soon on her way but it raised the real issue of the lack of a charging station in Millstreet”.

Whilst we have recently welcomed many announcements from Government in relation to a new range of grants to support switching to Electric Vehicles, however, these are all pointless schemes if local towns and villages do not have basic charging facilities.

Croí Cónaithe Towns Scheme

The new Croí Cónaithe Towns Scheme will provide grants to renovate vacant and derelict properties in our towns and villages. This is going to be a game-changer for Rural Ireland.

50 years of Kanturk Golf Club

Next year is the 50th Anniversary of Kanturk Golf Club and to mark the occasion, Tony Walsh is writing a book representing the history of our Club. Tony is looking for any information members might think relevant to its history.

Community News Introducing International Miss Macra 2022 Amanda O'Sullivan

Banteer Macra’s Amanda O’Sullivan was crowned International Miss Macra at the recent International Miss Macra Festival. This year celebrates the 50th anniversary of the event. The International Miss Macra Festival is a 3-day personality competition- kind of like the Rose of the Tralee, but on a minor scale!

This festival is run by Clonoulty/Rossmore Macra na Feirme club over the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights of the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Amanda comes from Boherbue and is a primary school teacher in Ballyclough National School. She was nominated to the Board of IRD Duhallow this year as the Macra Na Feirme representative. Amanda is the current chairperson of Banteer Macra, is the Rural Youth representative for Avondhu and she is also on the National Rural Youth sub-committee. Amanda represented Macra na Feirme on a Study Session entitled “Food as a Human Rite” in Budapest this year. Amanda has previously been the PRO for her club.

The Duhallow region has seen success in the Miss Macra Competition over the last decade. She joins the hall of fame with former winners – Brid Cooney of Banteer Macra (43rd Miss Macra – 2014); and Sinead Guiney of Freemount Macra (45th Miss Macra – 2015).

New Beginning

Since the announcement that Duhallow/Sliabh Luachra Pastoral Area was reduced from five priests to four, much work has been undertaken to ensure that all parishes will continue to have the same vibrancy and level of service.The new weekend mass rota is just one small element of this change of process. There is also the Pastoral Care of our sixteen National Schools, 3 Secondary Schools, Hospital, Care Homes, Day Care Centres. We also have the care of the sick and housebound, along with Funerals, Baptism, and Weddings.

There is much to be done, and this will only be achieved by the ongoing collaboration between Laity and Clergy. Our Parish Secretaries, Sacristans, and all volunteers will be integral to fulfilling our Christian Mission. Each parish is blessed with Pastoral Councils, Liturgy Committees Finucane Committees, Building Committees, Altar Societies etc, and all will be taking on added responsibilities.

The new weekend mass rota listed below, which has been developed by the Area Pastoral Council is based on the rotation of our four priests, but it also has the flexibility to be covered by three priests in the event of Covid, Illnessor Holidays. (these are eventualities which have to be anticipated.) Naturally this in some cases, necessitated the reduction in Masses and the changing of times. In all, parishioners in the Pastoral Area will have the option of five vigil masses and seven morning masses. Yes, this may involve change from our present routine, but going forward both priests and people will have to be adaptable and willing to move around.

This new rota will begin on the weekend of September 3rd /4th and will be reviewed after a settling in period

The picture is of the Millstreet football team for which both men played for, taken on the day of the Senior County Football final against St. Finbarrs, November 25th, 1956. It was played in the Cork Athletic Grounds where St. Finbarrs won by two points on the day. As of 2022, Noel and Con are the last two living players in this legendary photo.

LEADER in the community Spotlight on: Mount Hillary Holiday Pods

The Duhallow region is stepped in natural beauty offering incredible holiday experiences to visitors including its rich culture & heritage, outdoor pursuits and outdoor activities including a fantastic walking trail infrastructure. Tourism has a significant role to play in the development of Duhallow.

With the aid of LEADER funding, Mount Hilary Holiday Pods were established and are a welcomed addition to the Rural Tourism Product of the Duhallow region. Located in Banteer, Co. Cork, at the foot of Mount Hilary, these three fully contained holiday pods enhance rural tourism and promote walks on Mount Hilary which is located South East of Banteer village and consists of three different looped walks.

Further, this offering will help combat the accommodation shortage in Duhallow.

The holiday pods were carefully designed and constructed to fit the natural landscape around them with the intention of bringing visitor close to nature providing a glamping experience.

It is hoped that the development will further stimulate the local economy including local shops, restaurants and pubs, and further

tourism providers that are located in the area as well as create new, seasonal employment in the area including management, housekeeping and maintenance.

#SICAPstories IRD Duhallow’s Friendly Phone call Service IRD Duhallow’s Friendly Phone call Service counteracts the impact of social isolation and loneliness felt by people in Duhallow. This free service helps to give those in need of support, a greater sense of social inclusion, helping to reduce isolation and loneliness.

This service was particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic when redeployed staff and trained volunteers from IRD Duhallow made weekly phone calls to over 700 people during this time whereby referrals were also received from the national organisation Alone.

Many of these using the services during the COVID-19

pandemic in particular, requested to be included in the friendly-call service, while others already on it have asked for more frequent and longer-lasting calls.

IRD Duhallow responded to the issues of loneliness and isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic by delivering their message on national media with our report of the impact of COVID-19 on Older People making the front page of the Irish Examiner and Maura Walsh our CEO delivered the message on a feature with Dr. Ciara Kelly on Newstalk. It also attracted the interest of local media with C103FM, Kerry Radio and Tipp FM all featuring the findings of the report.

How to stay positive while searching for a Job

Looking for a job can be a very anxious time and staying positive is easier said than done! Follow our top tips to stay focussed, positive and hopeful.

Get organised Make sure that your CV is up to date and that you have draft cover letter which you can easily be tweaked to suit the roles you are applying for. You may also want to check if your LinkedIn profile is current. This is also a good time to check if you have an outfit for an interview ready should you be invited at short notice. Lastly, have you thought about who you could ask to give you a reference? This is the time to focus on these job search basics.

Treat your search like a job Look at your job hunt like a job that you start at the same time every morning, take a lunch break from and that ends at the same time every day. This will give your day structure and routine which will help you to remain focussed.

Be kind to yourself and give yourself a break It is very important that you take regular breaks from your job search allowing you to give your mind a break. Consider spending time outdoors, exercising and don’t

forget quality times with friends and family which will help you recharge.

Focus on the positives Remember that some things simply take time. Give yourself credit for small successes along the way. Keep your chin up and be kind to yourself.

Go Raibh Míle Maith Agat, Jack!

Over the years Jack has expended considerable time and effort to conserving and preserving the Sliabh Luachra Culture and Heritage and his talented Sliabh Luachra Performers are a testament to him.

Following this, there was a presentation of a piece of a specially commissioned Art on a Slate made by Kate O’Keeffe.

Inscribed on it was the lines from his show ‘Do not turn your back, on tradition or history lore, but pass it on before its gone and lost forever more.’ This was presented to Jack by long standing members of Bruach na Carraige Ceomhaltas Group, Tom and Marty Murphy.

This was followed by a special blessing from Fr. Stritch and number of speeches about Jack’s life. Maurice O’Keeffe spoke about the influence and impact Jack has had on the lives of all the young people who have trained with him. Deputy Michael Moynihan regaled the room with some of his earliest memories of Jack and his passion and dedication to serving the people of Rural Ireland. Eamon O’Cuiv had made the visit down from Galway to celebrate with his long time friend and comrade, he spoke about the many lengthy conversations he had with Jack about supporting rural areas and the huge impact that Jack had

on so many people throughout his political career. Finally Maura Walsh of IRD Duhallow spoke about the tireless work that Jack has done over the years not just in Ireland, but in Europe and she played a number of good wish messages sent by friends of his from around the globe.

The second half consisted of a rambling house where Duhallow’s finest musicians came together to perform, entertain and celebrate into the wee hours. Nights like this one don’t happen too often, and it was certainly a special one for all who attended.

What sounds can be heard in your home in the mornings? Maybe the kids are arguing, maybe your partner is perturbed at your lack of domestic skills in loading the dishwasher. Maybe you live with the dog who is a willing participant in your morning mutterings or maybe you are the retired couple who spend time over breakfast planning out the purposeful tasks for the day ahead. Whatever your setup, morning routines are very important.

The routine first thing in the morning can set the tone for the day. Following a familiar pattern can help us to feel more in control

as we face the day. If your morning is rushed or hassled you will likely carry that sensation with you throughout the day.

A routine can also play a huge part in stress control. Stress occurs when we feel that our demands outweigh our resources to meet those demands, so making a plan at the start of the day can help you to see clearly what is expected and how to manage things.

Following a healthy morning ritual can also decrease forgetful ness due to the repetitive nature of the actions.

It can help to boost confidence too as we are always more sure of ourselves when we know what we are doing.

If you have students in your household, the routine is vital as it provides a consistent approach to their day and allows them time to discuss any issue they may be dealing with.

Most importantly, after you have had your coffee and you feel alive, make sure you smile at those around you and wish them a good day. It’s a hard world out there, you never know what could happen so don’t regret the goodbye you didn’t say.

Ballydesmond Gym Gets a Revamp

We have upgraded our gym equipment and bought some new

high-end machines like a state-of-the-art rowing machine and treadmill. The gym features a functional weight lifting area with a range of dumbbells, barbells, plates and benches.

In the cardio area, we have two treadmills, a cross trainer, spinning bike and rowing machine.

There is also space on our newly installed Astro turfed flooring for stretching and core work to be completed.

The gym can be accessed at any time which means you can fit it into your daily life no matter your schedule!

The gym is available for membership to anybody who wishes to join and the fee to join from now until the end of the year

Mushrooms in traditional Kampo medicine

Kampo is a type of traditional Japanese medicine that has its roots in traditional Chinese Medicine. It’s said that Buddhist monks, the first practitioners of Kampo, brought with them medicinal knowledge when they came over to Japan from China in the 5th and 6th centuries.

Kampo is like traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda in the sense that they both focus on holistic approaches.

These medicinal systems treat the entire body and mind.

Mushrooms in Kampo are said to not only be nutrient-dense but may also contain medicinal properties that have been used for healing properties for thousands of years.

Reishi mushroom is also known as Ganoderma Lucidum, and as ‘the mushroom of immortality’. It is reported to have several health

benefits, some include supporting heart health, improving sleep and lessening fatigue.

Lions Mane mushrooms have both culinary and medical uses in Asian countries like Japan.

Some research has revealed that lions mane constituents known as erinacines, which may promote brain and nerve cell health.

In Chinese & Japanese medicine, shiitake are thought to boost health and longevity, as well as improve circulation. Some studies suggest the proposed benefits may include strengthening bones and reducing inflammation.

Chaga mushrooms have been used for centuries in Japan and other parts of Asia as a medicine.

Though research is ongoing, some scientific studies indicate that chaga extract may provide certain health benefits such as supporting the immune system and may aid

mood and sleep.

Traditional Japanese and Asian herbalists have treasured turkey tail mushroom as a powerful tonic for the immune system and healthy liver function.

Saint Maximilian Kolbe - Great Saint of Auschwitz We celebrate the feast day of Saint Maximilian Kolbe on August 14th. He is known by many titles but is best known as The Saint of Auschwitz. He was the priest who gave his life for a fellow prisoner in the concentration camp in Auschwitz. He was willing to die so that a fellow prisoner with a family could be set free.

But before this he was just Raymond, Raymond Kolbe, who in 1894 was born into a poor Polish family. And from the beginning, one wouldn’t have guessed he would eventually become a great saint. In fact, one day, his mother was so frustrated with his behaviour that she yelled at him in exasperation, “What will be become of you?” This shocked the boy to the core. Filled with grief, he immediately turned to the mother of God, asking her, “What will become of me?”

Then he went to the church and asked her the same question.

The future saint recounted what happened next.

“Then the Virgin Mother appeared to me holding in her hands two crowns, one white and one red.

She looked at me with love and asked me if I would like to have them. The white meant that I would remain pure and the red that I would be a martyr. I answered yes, I wanted them both. Then she looked at me tenderly and disappeared.”

The white crown of purity came first when he became Brother Maximilian and professed religious vows. Perhaps because of his natural intensity and passion, Kolbe felt a particular strong desire to give himself to a specific mission or goal. In 1917 he, along with six of his fellow seminarians, began the “Militia Immaculata”

(Army of the Immaculate One). Its goal was to bring the whole world to God through Christ under the generalship of Mary Immaculate and he sacrificed everything for its accomplishment.

Saint Maximilian’s teaching on devotion to Mary is legendary and recommends we give all our prayer offerings to her, even our entire lives over in consecration to her.

She is the Mediatrix of all graces.

It is God’s will that she distributes his graces.

Father Maximilian encouraged adoration of the Blessed Sacrament as “the most important activity.” He had a dream that in the chapel of Niepokalanow in Poland the Lord Jesus would be exposed in a monstrance day and night. In 1938, he stated, “my aim is to institute perpetual adoration.

When we come to the chapel, we gain for ourselves and for others many graces, particularly if the whole day is given to adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. By this adoration, a tremendous amount of good is done.”

In speaking about perpetual adoration, he said, “there flows an uninterrupted stream of prayer.

Prayer is the greatest power in the universe, capable of transforming each of us, capable of changing the face of the earth.”

In 1941, after decades of

incredibly fruitful apostolic labours in Poland and Japan, Kolbe was arrested by the Gestapo for providing shelter for refugees including 2000 Jews and publishing anti- Nazi German publications and sent to Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Before his arrest, his brother Franciscans had pleaded with him to go into hiding.

He said he was grateful for their loving hearts but couldn’t follow their advice. Later he explained why, “I have a mission - the Immaculate has a mission for me to fulfil”.

That mission was accomplished on the eve of the feast of Mary's Assumption into Heaven, when, after having volunteered to take the place of a prisoner condemned to starvation, the impatient Nazis finished off Kolbe with a lethal injection. Thus St. Maximilian died a martyr of charity and received his second crown, his red crown, from his Blessed Mother. It is amazing what God can do despite great evil and great atrocities where more than one million people were put to death that we have one of the greatest saints of the 20th century.

Maximilian Kolbe was canonized a saint on 10 Oct 1982 by Saint John Paul 11. He is patron saint of amateur radio operators, drug addicts, political prisoners, families, journalists, prisoners, and the pro-life movement.

Dan O'Connell’s Traditional Pub, Knocknagree

Sliabh Luachra Musician Dan O’Connell’s pub in Knocknagree was known all over the country for Sliabh Luachra music and dancing. I myself spent many Friday and Sunday nights there dancing sets, playing and learning tunes from some of the greats such as Johnny O’Leary, Maurice O’Keeffe, Mikey Duggan, Dan Jeremiah O Connor, Willy O’Connell and many more.

The set dancing started at Dan O’ Connell’s on St Stephen ‘s night 1965 and rumour has it that it didn’t stop for 40 years. The famous Denis Murphy and Johnny O’Leary played the music for the sets there for many years and it became a cornerstone for Sliabh Luachra culture. Johnny O’ Leary, Tony McMahon and Noel Hill all recorded albums in the pub.

Sadly the pub closed in 2007.

For me - it was the pinnacle of great Sliabh Luachra music and set dancing.

There has been nowhere to match it since.

Badgers

Ecology Intern at IRD Duhallow The European Badger (Meles meles) is an omnivorous mammal, easily identified by the characteristic black and white markings on its face. Similar to cats and small dogs, they can live for up to 15 years. They are found throughout Ireland, likely having been introduced by early settlers. Badgers live in family social groups, in underground dens known as setts. Setts can be made up of hundreds of metres of tunnels, but are usually much smaller than this. They have a number of different entrances, and badger groups will continue to use the same sett for long periods of time, with one sett in Cork being known to be in use by badgers for over 100 years.

Badgers are very adaptable and build their setts in many different places, preferring natural woodlands and unmanaged or rough grassland.

Badgers are considered ‘ecosystem engineers’ because of how their setts change the environment they are in. When setts are abandoned by badgers, they provide shelter and feeding opportunities for many other species, especially

insects and fungi that do well in the dark and humid conditions.

Badgers are nocturnal, resting in their setts during the day, and coming out to look for food at night. They will eat a variety of foods depending on what is available at particular times of the year, but most of their diet is made up of earthworms, slugs, insects, berries and plants. Frogs are an important part of their diet, and they sometimes eat small mammals and birds.

While there are many stories about badgers, like that they can break bones, they are actually shy, non-aggressive animals and will do their best to avoid any contact with humans. They have strong jaws however, and if cornered, or during attempts to catch them, they can bite while trying to escape.

they are deemed not at risk in terms of their conservation. They have gained a negative reputation over the years due to their role in the spread of bovine tuberculosis to cattle in Ireland, but their role in this is generally overstated. Badgers’ social groups remain quite stable, and most badgers do not travel or migrate large distances, meaning the risk of them spreading TB is quite small. In some cases where culling has taken place to limit the spread of TB, it has increased badger movements, and caused the spread of TB to increase also. Recent trials using vaccination of badgers to reduce the spread of TB have been successful, and there are plans to introduce a vaccination programme across Ireland, eliminating the need for culling, except in hotspots of severe TB infection in cattle.

Badgers like areas that are quiet and where they can stay well hidden. We can help them by leaving areas of land undisturbed and letting vegetation grow long.

This will give them a place to live and to look for food. They’ll thank us by eating the slugs and other pests that can damage our garden flowers and plants.

An Unforgettable Classic GAME REVIEW

Originally released on the Nintendo 64 in 1998 Banjo-Kazooie tells the simple story of Banjo the bear and Kazooie the Breegul. Gruntilda the Witch, who bears a striking resemblance to the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, kidnaps Banjo’s sister attempting to steal her beauty with a contraption when a magic cauldron tells her

Kazooie takes flight, not her only ability too. so, clearly inspired by Snow White.

The influence of Fairy Tales goes beyond its story. The excellent musical score by Grant Kirkhope, which changes depending where Banjo-Kazooie are in the level. The funny and weird characters the bear and bird meet along the way and the well aged colourful visuals all contribute to a delightfully whimsical atmosphere that is a complete breath of fresh air compared to the modern trends in the Gaming Industry.
