‘On the Record’ - IRD Duhallow Project Culminates In A Special Screening

By NOLLAIG MURPHY Development Officer at IRD Duhallow

A special screening of a selection of the wonderful stories recorded on camera with the support of LEADER 2014-2020 was recently hosted in the James O’Keeffe Institute. The event was opened by the Chairperson of the Community Development Working Group, Billy Dennehy, who spoke of the tremendous work undertaken throughout Duhallow to date surveying hundreds of headstones and recording stories connected to the local historic graveyards. This work has created an amazing resource for both the community and diaspora alike. Also present at the screening was project tutor, John Tierney, who outlined the uniqueness of the stories recorded and the special local history that exists in the Duhallow region. An array of video recordings highlighting the broad social and cultural history of the local area were shown, sparking discussion and great interest by all in attendance.

Years in the making, the screening offered a sample of the invaluable stories and history recorded and curated by project tutor, John Tierney.

Discover Duhallow’s Tadhg Curtin was also at the screening. One big takeaway from the night is that there is literally a vast, rich landscape of story and history all around us and projects like this help illuminate and preserve this history for future generations. Subjects who were on camera and in attendance offered amazing extra insights and details to the stories they had shared. It added so much to a fantastic night of exploring our local past. A great credit to everyone involved!
