RTFCwasoriginallyfoundedin1875butit’snotuntil1896thatwefindreferencestoa ReserveTeamwhichseemstobeplayingfriendliesagainstCambridgebasedsides. Duringtheearlyyearsofthe20 centurythispatterncontinuedbeforewefindthe teamplayingintheCambsLeaguebeforeswitchingtotheBuntingfordandDistrict LeaguewheretheywerecrownedLeaguechampionstwiceinthreeseasons[1921/22 and1923/24]
Throughoutthe1930’stheyhadswitchedbacktotheCambsLeagueandimmediately aftertheendofWW2wontheCambsJuniorCup1946/47beatingSwavesey2-1inthe final.TheClubthenmovedintotheHertsCountyLeague,thentotheSouthMidlands Leaguein1959/60beforecompletingafullcirclebyreturningtotheHertsCounty leaguewhereboththefirstandreserveteamsenjoyedsuccessfulchampionship winningcampaigns.Butitdidn’tstopthere,andin1977/78bothteamswerebackin theSouthMidlandsLeaguewheretheReserveswonsuccessiveLeaguetitlesin 1978/79and1979/80.

The2024/25seasonhasbeenoneofrebuildandprogressfor RoystonTownFCReserves.Afteramanagerialchangeand variousnewarrivals,thenewlyarrangedsquadstartedthe seasonfullofenergyandyouthandproducedsomefantastic displays,meritingsomewelldeservedvictoriesalongtheway.
Withwintersettinginandtheimpactofinjuriesandexitstothe squad,themiddlesectionoftheseasonbecameatough challengeandsawthesideunabletoclaimavictoryforlengthy runofgames.Thecatalystforachangeinfortuneandastrong finishtotheseasoncamefromaperformanceoftheseason victoryathometoIrchesterUnited.Thepositiverunhasseen theReservesclaimfivevictoriesandtwodrawsfromninegames andhaspushedthesideoutofdangerandtowardsthemid tablepositions.

AsthefirstseasonofournewU18sidecomestoaclose,I’vebeenaskedtowriteafew wordsabouttheseason.MostofallIwanttosaywhatapleasureit’sbeencoaching thisgroupoflads.Asanewteamatthestartoftheseason,itwasalwaysaworrythat wewouldn’tbeabletocompeteatthislevel.WellIcanhonestlysaytheboyshave grownwitheverygameandweshouldn’thavebeenconcernedatall.Their togethernessandattitudeshavebeenspotonandthisSaturdaywehad5(6ifyou countonewhomovedtoDaventrymidseason)playingforourmen’sReserveteam, andourlasthomegamewasaresounding6-1victory.WhenJonesyandItookthe rolesascoaches,wealwayswantedtheU18tobechallengingforthemen’steams, andatIrchesterwefoundtheperfectclubasalltheteamsaresoconnectedandthe men’steamshavetakenakeeninterestintheyouth(somethingthatIfeelisnotthe sameatalotoftheU18teamsweplay).I’dliketothanktheclubforputtingtheirtrust inRobandIandlettingusputateamtogether.OursquadismadeupmostlyofU16& U17soifwecangetthemalltosignagainnextyear(whichisnoforgoneconclusion asmanyofthemwilljoinFEP’sandmaywishtoplaywiththeirnewcollegeteams), andaddafewnewfacestoreplaceourtopagelads,I’msurenextseasonwillbeeven betterthanthisone.AbigthankyougoesouttoJakeandMarkforhelpingusout throughtheseason.Withoutyouwewouldn’thavehadthesuccessandgrowthinthe team.FinallyI’dliketomentionRobJoneswhoduetoillhealthhadtotakeastep backfromfootballlastyear.Theamountofworkwebothputinatthestartofthe seasonwithtrainingandtrialgameshasbornthefruitsofagreatbunchofladswho, ontheirday,cangiveanysideintheseleaguesagame.Ithinkwecanbehappywith theoveralloutcomemate!!

IstartedwithCastleRiseunder10’sin1996becausemysondidn’twanttomiss outonhisfootballduetocurrentmanagerresigningandworkedwiththem rightuptotheladsfinishedatunder16s-afewcupsandleaguechampions duringthistime-amazingtimeswithbrilliantplayers.Ithenmovedonto CorbyTownUnder18s.AtthetimeBobDunionandLeeGloverwere management,learningatremendousamountfromthembothduringthis time.Wetooktheunder18syouthteamtonewlevelswinningthebigtreble, league,cupandshieldwhichwasthefirsttimetobedoneintheleagues25 yearhistory.Chipsandbeansforawin, alsohaving7playersintheCounty squad.Thenafterunder18swesetupAFCCorbyTownintheCombination leaguetosupportCorbyTownasthereserveteam,winningaleagueandfew cupsbutthelevelwasnotcompetitiveenoughsowemovedontotheUCL.

Hereweareatthelasthomegameoftheseasonandonlyashorttripto WhitworthstocomeonSaturday.ThisbeingIrchesterI’mnotassuming anythingabouttheplayoffs.It’sbeenaseasonthatveryfewofussaw coming,certainlynotmewhowouldhavebeenhappywithafourthfrom bottomfinishandnosqueakybumtimegoingintotheFAsummermeetings.
MyassociationwithIrchestergoesbackalongway,startingwithwatching gamesasateenager,I’msooldIcanremembertheoldbreezeblockstand beingbuiltandwethoughtitwasbetterthanWembley,itprobablywasn’tany worsethanoldWembleytobefair.MyfirstforaysintoIrchesterfootballcame withthefirstyouthteaminnineteeneightysomething.Iinventedthefalse ninepositionasIplayedcentreforwardbutneverscored.Ittookthefootball worldthirtyyearstorefinetheroleandunderstandthatyouhadtocreateas well.Movingintoadultfootballitquicklybecameobviousthatmybest positionwasunusedsubstitutesoIstucktoSundayfootball.
FastforwardalotofyearsandI’mbackatIrchasUnder18Manager,andlater chairman.Isteppeddownfromthechairmanrolethistimelastyearaftera fewyearsasIwasplanningonlyonemoreyear,sowhenmanagerDan StewarttoldmehewassteppingdownIdecidedthatitwouldbeunfairtothe newmanagerstohaveachairmanwhowasonlygoingtobearoundfora year.
Ontothisseasonandthestandardsweresetearlydoorswithagreat managementteamappointment.LiamIdidn’tknow,MitchIknewfromhis daysatIrchandIhadTrentandKallanintheteamwhenmanagingtheUnder 18’s,alongwithDelroy,LewisandPlummer.Thatteamwasaverygoodteam andmanagingthemwaseasyaswejustpickedthestartingelevenandthen letthemgetonwithit.ZakandCallumHarleyplayedforWellingborough, albeitafewyearsapartsoIknewtheirquality.Reecealsoplayedforthe Under18’sandKobitrainedwithus.AddinJake,whoIknewfromDiamonds andthiswaspromising.
Thestartoftheseasonwasstrangeforme,itwasthefirsttimeintwenty yearsthatIhadn’tbeenattheheartofthingsandIdidn’twanttocometo gamesandactasifnothinghadchanged.Ididn’twatchagameuntiltheend ofAugustbutitwasobviousthatwehadateamthatcouldbesomething special,competingagainstteamsthatwerepayingplayersbigmoneyforthe levelweareat.I’vewatchedmostoftheSaturdaygamesandalsogonealong toRushden&HighamandRaundsforawaygamesandIcansaythattheonly timewe’vebeensecondbestisagainstMKIrishintheVase,andthatwasn’t bymuch.

IcansayquiteconfidentlythatthisisthebestteamI’veseenwearingtheIrchester shirts.Yes,therehavebeenmistakes,therealwaysare,andtherehavebeentimes whenwehavebeensecondbestforperiodsofthegame,butgenerallywehave controlledgamesplayingattractive,expansivefootballalongtheway.It’sclearto anyonewatchingthatthisisatightknitsquadofplayers.
HighlightsformehavebeengoingthreeupintenminutesathometoHuntingdon andnotworryingthatwe’dbeluckytocomeoutofitwithadraw,smashing Rushden&HighamandRaundsawayandbeatingLetchworthGardenCityEagles especiallywhenoneoftheirplayerscameoffthepitchatfulltimemuttering somethingabout“comingallthiswaytogetbeatbyabunchofyokels”oharohar.
I’mstillinvolved,servingasAccreditationCoordinator,animportbutnottime consumingroleinmakingsurewekeepthestandardstocontinuetobeaFA Accreditedclub.
IhopeeveryonehasenjoyedtheseasonasmuchasIhave,aswellthefootballI’ve beenreallyimpressedtoseehowtheyoungmenmentionedabovehavematuredas people.Theyareallfinemen,asaretherestoftheplayersandmanagement. Grassrootsfootballisnotalwaysabouttheresultsonthepitch.It’saboutbring peopleintoyourclubwhobuyintothecultureoftheclub,understandthetimeand effortvolunteersputintorunningtheclubanddon’tactlikeprimadonna’s.That’s beenachievedinspadesthisseason.
