CONVERSATION

Brief For my first project, I have been asked to create a visual response to the idea of ‘A Conversation’ Through the application of my chosen practice, I then to research and develop a visual outcome that centres around the idea of ‘A Conversation’. A conversation is ‘a talk, especially an informal one, between two or more people, in which news and ideas are exchanged’. One of the given starting point for this project is to ‘Visualise a conversation between two people. This could be spoken or possibly a more creative conversation acted out through workshop activity or creative play’. I then have to consider how my chosen practice and idea will clearly capture “A Conversation” using the most appropriate medium such as poster, book, campaign poster or script. My aim is to undertake creative and ambitious research, develop a brief through research and development, examine the conceptual and aesthetic potential of “a conversation”, innovate and explore technical parameters, create a contemporary portfolio piece, make your chosen audience pay attention to your work.

Research

Conversation Idea I decided that the topic talked about in the discussion would be a good topic to focus on for this project. This is because, I think this subject has got a lot of interesting elements that are worth exploring and creating visual outcomes around. For this project, I have decided to focus on how thinking positive can make it easy for people to be able to act positive and interact with others. I want to show that if people see things in a positive way it will show in their action and their conversation with others and in order to do this I will use proverbs about conversation / positive thinking and create illustrations around it to visually how important it is to stay calm during situations. Throughout this idea I will use the colour theory to represent emotions within the illustrations in order to make the content interesting. I had few thoughts before going forward with this idea but I think if I take this idea further, the development around this would be very exciting, consistent and simple. I decided to go ahead with this idea after I had the discussion with my class fellows about the decision Mr charter tuck about the man, the estate agent from the newspaper article. This is because Mr charter made his decision in anger, but if he stayed calm during the situation and tried to be positive, the whole case would have been completely different and more legible because his emotions got in the way of allowing him to think positive.

Analysis I feel did really well with this project and have significantly explored the idea. My first attempt with this brief did not go according to plan, but I am very happy with my second attempt as this idea clearly explores the many different sides of what ‘A conversation’ can become and how it is important. My final piece has got a lot of explorations around it, which has been directed from my research. I decided to keep my research narrow but effective because I wanted to look more into the presentation and techniques side in order to make my conversation look interesting. I am pleased that I associated my conversation with positive thinking because I felt that this subject needed to be expressed and presented in a way that it inspires people to think positive and be more open minded when it comes to communication. I find that my idea is not exactly unique as a lot of people already know how important positive thinking is but I found it necessary to look into it and portray it in a way that no one would have thought about it from this perspective. I especially like how the colours make the information and design stand out even more; the colours are the best elements of my designs as they grab the audience’s attention. I think that this idea could be developed even more and presented in different format such as a poster so that the concept of positive thinking could get more awareness from the audience. From this brief I have learnt a lot about the colour theory and how important it is for conveying a message and meaning.

Brief For my second project, I have been asked to re brand an independent company in Huddersfield. This brief is split into 2. The first half of this brief is based on group work where we have to work in a group of 4 or 5 people to review the independent companies, commercial ventures and organisations based in the centre of Huddersfield that we feel would benefit from a re brand and choose one to use for this project. In groups we then research the chosen company, commercial venture or organisation in order to determine it’s key offer, services, attributes, characteristics, build insight into who the main target audiences are and determine what would increase their engagement and commitment with your chosen company The second half of this brief is based on individual work, where I have to draw out from the group research, develop ideas and produce a set of new brand guidelines that positively re brands my chosen company, commercial venture or organisation This project will involve me to work with others in order to explore the potential of branding, collaboratively compile, share and analyse research with the group and then individually work up concepts and outcomes. I am required to complete a set of brand guidelines, a designed, A4 landscape research document, prototyping of the proposed final outcomes and a short written piece of reflective evaluation.

Choosing A Company As a group, We went around Huddersfield town taking pictures of independent shops that we found that we could use for our project to re brand. We decided on re-branding a coffee shop because we came across few independent coffee shops which we could compare and re create a new brand out of. Out of the 4 coffee shops, we went with Queenies as we felt that Queenies coffee shop’s branding is not as professional compared to the others and we could improve its branding and make its identity stand out to the audience. Once we decided on re-branding Queenies, we went back to the shop and asked if we could take pictures of inside the shop as our company research. We also tuck pictures of Huddersfield town centre as we went along, this was also for our research so that we got a better understanding of the environment around the shop in order to make the branding more appropriate for its audience. Using the pictures and images that we collected were then put together on a A2 sheet of paper as mood boards. We created 6 mood boards, Huddersfield mood board, coffee branding, company coffee shop, target audience and Queenies Reviews. We got the our target audience, coffee branding and the review images from the internet. Creating these mood boards made it easier for me and the group to understand our target audience, our company and the environment so that my branding for Queenies is successful.

Concept Here I have brainstormed different concepts that I could use as advertising other than branding. I came up with these concepts by reading the Queenies Reviews. I felt that the environment inside the coffee shop was quite relaxing when I went to take pictures but the interior design was not interesting as there were no graphic imagery or boards on the wall and the use of colour was very dull. The only positive side was that people found it a very good place for socialising and meeting up with family and friends so I thought that the could more interactive elements within the shop to make the customers stay in the shop more memorable. Similarly I have brainstormed many other ideas like this that could make the shop appealing to my target audience and Queenies customer. I will not be able to physically design or create these ideas but as research it was a good idea to think about the coffee shop itself and not only the branding. I have visually shown some of my concepts by creating different mood bards on some of the ideas.

Analysis In this project, I feel that I have applied various great ideas, techniques, skills and development in the best way possible to produce the final branded products in a professional and contemporary way. I am happy with the way I conducted my research effectively as it lead me to a very interest concept which I really enjoyed using to create the re brand products around. I also found the group research very helpful as the data was collected effetely in less time, which gave me more time to concentrate on my products and designs. The concept that I decided to do had been very challenging because I decided to do pattern as branding as I found this idea very unique and it fitted in really well with my retro concept. The design that I have come with worked successfully as it links in really well with the background and atmosphere of my chosen company and I now feel that my re brand portrays a lot of professionalism to the company. The aspect that I spent the longest on was the logo, because it was very hard to create a logo that worked with the pattern and still expressed the coffee shop visually. I had 3 attempts with my logo, but I am very satisfied with the final one. Alongside final products, I had to produce brand guidelines that outlined the important requirements and terms of use for the brand and logo so that each element of this new brand can be used properly. I have never designed a guideline document but I did not find hard but I think I did my very best and the final result is very effective.

Creative Challenge Visually Celebrate that ‘Design Works Wonders’ MOO has updated their brand with a new tag line – Design Works Wonders – but their tag line is so much more than just words: Design Works Wonders, it is their philosophy. It’s what drives them to keep innovating and producing beautifully designed products that both we, and our customers, can be truly proud of. In order to raise awareness of MOO’s philosophy, I have to create a visual representation of Design Works Wonders, by bringing it to life through any format I would like, from graphic design and illustration to animation or photography. They are looking for something visually striking, something that will directly appeal and speak to their design-loving customers, whilst building intrigue about MOO.

Analysis I feel that I have completed this commercial brief successfully by exploring many different ideas, techniques and forms. I did a lot of research based around the company. I absolutely loved the card designs that MOO had designed, by exploring MOO’s work it inspired me to create unique and influential designs that would appeal to their target audience. I did a lot of development work using various mediums and surfaces such as paint, paper art and after effects. My intention for the final piece was to create an animation that visually demonstrated the creative process behind the printed cards and I also created a storyboard to explain my animation idea a bit better. I explored this idea a lot and was very excited to create the animation but it did not work out the way I had planned. I changed my idea and decided to create a poster using the paper crafting technique to portray the message I intended for the animation. With this idea, I decided to be free with the elements by using art tools to show creativity and playfulness as MOO is all about being free and playful. I have analysed my final design and one drawback would be that it could have been more detailed and developed more. If I were to do this brief again, I would have experimented with the style and layout a bit more. I would have also tried to fit in my development work because I really like the outcome of the paints and I think that they would have worked really well as cards.
