The Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) is the only self-regulatory organization for interior designers in Ontario. Since its inception in 1934, the Association has played a vital role in the interior design industry by protecting the rights of the interior design profession and regulating the interior design profession in Ontario in the best interests of the public. ARIDO obtained Private legislation, Bill Pr6, in 1999 which grants Registered Members who meet ARIDO standards exclusive use of the title Interior Designer in Ontario. By giving legal standing to the designation of Interior Designer, the government bestows on the title a measure of respect and recognizes the high standards of education, training and formal examination that professional interior designers meet. The act also safeguards consumers by ensuring that members are fully qualified and possess the most current qualifications. Any person in Ontario who is not a Registered member of ARIDO is guilty of an offense if he or she uses the designation Interior Designer or ARIDO. The more than 1,100 Registered members of ARIDO have expertise in a wide range of sectors including corporate, residential, retail, hospitality, health care and institutional. In total, ARIDO has more than 2,900 Registered, Intern, Educator, and Student members.

The DS-09 Subway Design Standard designed for the Metrolinx Ontario Line was purposely built on a future forward mindset, starting from the development of the Customer Journey Map which distilled the various journey stages, challenges encountered, and human emotions identified at each point along a customer’s journey. The standard was designed so the customer experience is seamless, intuitive, inclusive, safe, thoughtful, and reliable throughout. The humancentric approach considers many touchpoints such as payment experience, transferring, navigation, platform boarding and disembarking, as well as spatial adjacencies and sensory aspects such as noise, smells, and sight lines which may impact the quality of a customer’s experience. Variable design elements include feature walls and ceilings and are strategically introduced to provide differentiation across stations and become regional focal points. These elements can promote placemaking and express a community’s unique identity. The implementation of Platform Edge Doors will significantly enhance the customer experience while ensuring customer safety. Used to separate the platform from the tracks, the framed glass wall partition system can improve passenger safety in multiple ways: preventing accidents from people or objects falling on tracks, as well as improving air quality, and climate control within stations. The implementation of the Standard will have a profound positive effect on local residents and customers, connecting communities across Toronto and the GTA and deliver more accessible, equitable, and inclusive transit. 24

With a narrow, tall lobby at the new 411 Church condo in Toronto, the design team wanted to activate the volume of negative space with a beautiful custom ceiling sculpture to draw the attention of visitors and passersby and to evoke a feeling of wonder. The chosen concept was a geometric sculpture with intertwined rods expressing angular movement. Taking advantage of the sharp, crisp edges created by a mill, solid aluminum bars were selected as the material, in square, flat and rectangular shapes. Aluminum dowel pins at each joint hold the connections together. With 368 bars and 800 hand-cut dowels, the sculpture is 29-feet long, 21-feet wide, and 7-feet tall, weighing a total of 1,900 pounds. Suspended over the reception desk, the sculpture completes the space and accents the height of the lobby. Viewed from the double story window outside, or inside the space, this one-of-a-kind art piece dazzles.

Still Light, the custom ceiling sculpture suspended in the lobby of The Selby, is intended to remind residents of the historic Gooderham home and the surrounding Distillery District. The ceiling sculpture is an abstraction or reinterpretation of a distillery still, the livelihood of the Gooderham family. Set against a backdrop of a timeless aesthetic that is at once traditional and modern, the fixture features 20 sheets of mirror-polished, laser-cut, solid 22 gauge copper riveted to a ribbed aluminum frame, lit by LEDs. This reinterpretation of the common still results in a dynamic and striking copper fixture which engages viewers through the intricacies and details of the design. The warmth of the copper is set against the cool white marble of the lobby, while the overlapping layers, reflections, and illumination from within draw the viewer closer and create a dynamic visual and sensory experience.

As a provider of office furnishings for more than 50 years, McCrum’s sought to unite employees within their vast showroom and create a place of connection and collaboration, while showcasing product and workplace solutions in action. The design team created multiple settings, including a patio/pergola, dining room, café/restaurant, away niches, and living rooms. Employees were grouped in one area to promote natural collisions and eliminate the hierarchy based on office size. An existing skylight provides daylight and that biophilic boost during harsh prairie winters. Café spaces are grouped around a central stair to promote employee engagement. The showroom was refreshed to create product neighbourhoods and ease the process of swapping around new products. A sense of comfort and calmness is established upon entry by various textures through the richness of the wood paneling, the softness of the area rug, and the gentle glow of the decorative pendants. The new space is agile and adaptable, which ensured McCrum’s could also accommodate new directional movement protocols during the pandemic.

Growing up in the surrounding region, the design team had fond memories of visiting the McMichael Canadian Art Collection on school trips. The design lead’s great-grandfather studied painting under Group of Seven artist A.J. Casson, which provided a personal connection to the Gallery’s original focus. This emotional investment was the departure point to redesign the café into a meaningful, empathetic space. What are empathetic spaces? Partly about being empathetic to the space in the way we redesign, while renewing the space in a way that makes it empathetic to its intended users. Reinventing the café at the hearth of the Gallery’s entrance hall required a respectful and researched approach, considerate of the heritage architecture and mindful of the Ojibwe Anishinaabe people and their land on which the gallery sits. Slatted divider screens demarcate the dining space and provide privacy for seated guests. Inspired by Indigenous architecture, gathering-circles and the concept of placemaking, their undulating inner layers incorporate felt design that references the artistic language of Group of Seven landscapes. Rejecting Eurocentric preferences, the space is a showcase of Canadian-made products, celebrating craftsmanship, local materials, and time-honoured traditions.

Located in an end cap within a busy outdoor shopping centre, Nando’s Woodmore needed to create an intimate environment and sense of place; a celebration of South African colour and craft. Taking inspiration from the juxtaposition between the South African landscape and the rich colour and pattern of local fashion and design trends, the space is a mixture of raw exposed brick, natural leathers, and contemporary styled furnishings with bespoke details and accents. A collaboration with The Urbanative, a South African design and fabrication company, yielded a bespoke window screen element. Using metal and rope as the primary materials, its enlarged scale was key to the success of this installation. The materiality of the exposed brick and natural leather seating with the handmade pieces created in collaboration with South African artists and fabricators create a space with authenticity.

The Centre for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship (CITE) showcases Seneca College’s commitment to entrepreneurial innovation as well as a sustainable vision for the future inspired by an Indigenous worldview. Completed in just 30 months, the ambitious design evolved through extensive consultation with Seneca’s executive leadership, academic stakeholders, and the Aboriginal College Council, bringing together applied research, commercialization, specialized training, and an entrepreneurial incubator for both students and industry leaders. Accessible, inclusive design is embedded into the building via gender neutral washrooms, clear pathways and ramps, as well as integration of Indigenous culture into the experience of the building. The Innovation Gallery offers a unique architectural expression that engages the sloping topography into a gently terracing ground floor, providing accessible platforms for day-to-day student lounge and study space, which transform to display platforms or events space as needed.

Fleming College’s Sutherland Campus was established in 1973 with a collection of buildings designed by Ron Thom in collaboration with Thompson Berwick and Pratt and Partners within a 200-acre, terraced, park-like setting. Almost 50 years later, the college commissioned the design team to revitalize the outdated 76,000-sq.-ft. A-Wing, which serves as a campus gateway and classroom facility. The brief was to transform the dark, heavy, and inefficient building into a contemporary space to meet standards of 21st century learning, sustainability, and accessibility, without demolishing the building or pausing the occupancy. Shedding the building’s dark brown aluminum envelope back to its steel frame and recladding it with alpolic aluminum panels instantly provided a modern, clean and luminous appearance. Brightly coloured panels in brand colours were arranged at varying angles to capture natural light inside the building in different conditions, giving the illusion of a deeper colour palette. The colour story continues inside with interior finishes carefully selected to complement the exterior. Accessibility upgrades include barrier-free washrooms, wide hallways, and redesigned entrances with push button doors.

Surrounded by the natural beauty of Ontario’s escarpment, Niagara College is a rural community college focused on applied arts and technology. The design firm was asked to augment the college’s 1970s-era Welland Campus by creating a 35,000-sq.-ft. two-storey Student Commons hub with enhanced amenities that establishes a welcoming heart for the student community. Originally a warren of dark corridors, the building layout establishes a new, north-facing entrance to campus, enhances branding and wayfinding, and enables natural light and external views to uplift the daily student experience. The new centre accomodates a food court, retail space, new classrooms, a student activity room, and ample space for studying and group work. A tall soffit canopy clad in cedar spills into the building, acting as passive wayfinding by drawing visitors to the main entry. Iron spot brick adds warmth and anchors the entry corridor to the main student space. Barrierfree washrooms serve people with mobility issues and gender-neutral washrooms create an inclusive environment for all.

The new facility is a dynamic nexus of academic and social life on the highly picturesque university campus. The building features flexible and modern learning spaces, large tiered classrooms, a 300-person auditorium, administrative offices, meeting and exhibition spaces, and an open atrium named The Forum, a light-filled space designed for collaboration and interaction. The grand, inviting lobby space provides direct access to the main artery of the building, aptly named Scholar’s Walk. Exhibition spaces include a replica of Mr. Mulroney’s Office during his tenure as Prime Minister, as well as various exhibit spaces highlighting the former Prime Minister’s career. Given the rapid pace of change in learning environments, future proofing strategies such as standardization, modularity, flexibility, and generous circulation routes that can allow spaces to be reconfigured both in short and long term as pedagogy, programs, and technology change shaped the approach to all of the classrooms. Technology was also introduced in strategic ways so that students have ample access to power and content sharing which also supported online and hybrid learning during the pandemic.

With a future-focused mindset, this new space for Sobeys was designed to promote innovation while remaining current with today’s trends. Sobeys wanted to attract top talent and selected an existing brick-and-beam space in Toronto for a highly functional space for staff and customers. The original building materials of brick and wood were mixed with warm textiles and dark metal details to celebrate the existing architecture and create a warm and inviting space. By wrapping the main circulation path around centralized glass-enclosed meeting rooms, natural light floods the space, and teams are visible to their peers. All rooms have sensors to measure the usage of the space and allow for fine-tuning of room utilization. A harvest table, live edge benches, a bookshelf for the prayer room, and a television console for the gaming area were custom designed and produced by OCAD (Ontario College of Art & Design) students. Digital artwork at the front entry was created by Alex McCloud to add character and personality to a space that fosters innovation, complements culture, and will inspire talent for years to come.

Energy, high performance, and pushing to the limit are major markers of the Red Bull brand, and guiding themes for their new space in Toronto’s Liberty Village. With a directive to create a space that subtly embodies the brand, the design team laid out a central spine which connects each element of the office and envelops the user in a 3D experience encompassing movement of floor, wall and ceiling elements. Mixtures of raw metals, butcher black wood, and lacquer surfaces create a contrast of finishes that ripple through the entire space and integrate each element. The articulated space required a unique lighting solution, as it lacked a typical ceiling area to host a patterned array of lights. LED channels were incorporated into the wall and floor, creating a side light / uplight effect and holding the entire corridor at a consistent lighting level. A black box venue can house various signature events, small concerts, performances, festivities, or simple staff gatherings and includes a purpose designed beverage bar with all required equipment and services, and is directly connected to the terrace to allow for additional outdoor activities.

Richardson Wealth, an established wealth management firm in Vancouver, had been in their space for 17 years. The company was in the process of a cultural shift in the organization and sought a refreshed space in tandem with this new work milieu. The firm sought to promote collaboration, provide space for formal and informal client meetings, and enhance the employee experience. The design team established a Client Centre, a multi-purpose meeting room equipped with moveable glass partitions. A client coffee bar, client washrooms, and adjacent catering kitchens are a designated space to host clients while accommodating the range of client and advisor relationships. Opening the meeting room walls creates a larger event space to entertain groups, host client events, and employee town halls. Workstations line the exterior of the space so everyone has access to natural light. Multiple work postures are enabled via height-adjustable desks and various meeting layouts like standing-height tables and lounge configurations.

This in-house project was the result of a firm wide tech pivot to incorporate emerging technology platforms and create the Smart City of the Future. It laid the groundwork to re-establish the design firm from a traditional design services provider to that of a lifecycle partner. All guests and employees must cross an LED-lit corridor which invites a new mindset upon entry. The three different zones — a central communal hub; a visualization production area; and bespoke meeting zone — provide multiple settings for employees and guests to complete work. Black surfaces create a dramatic backdrop for tech experiences, contrasted by colour-saturated floating rooms, which provide both individual and group work settings. Sensors throughout the space provide extremely valuable data on issues such as space utilization and effective use of environmental controls and can provide bespoke behavioural user engagement. The transformational environ- ment enhances collaboration between industry partners and internal users in a “phygital” space blurring physical and digital in a truly innovative space.

Quality, confidence, and attention to detail are the bedrock of real estate developers’ and landlords’ reputations. As builders of communities, conveying a high level of professionalism and stability was a challenge in First Gulf’s dated surroundings. In the new configuration, natural light flows in with a backdrop of panoramic views. A balance of work settings for the staff include open seating, interior offices, and non-bookable privacy rooms lets the team be more visible to each other and collaborate in more effective ways, leaving behind the formerly siloed work environment. The new design places typically hidden elements, such as the community space and lunchroom at the forefront, adjacent to the reception and boardroom facility. Raw textures such as concrete and marble are mixed with natural woods and warm, plush tones. The art world was a major inspiration and the engagement of an art consultant led to the selection of several distinctly Canadian pieces chosen and commissioned to underscore the story.

As an important business unit within a large Canadian toy company, this space needed to attract top talent and match the refined skills and creativity of its artists, writers, actors and producers. In discussion with the client, the glamour of old Hollywood arose and was later incorporated via an Art Deco inspired wood trimmed lobby, entry marquee, burgundy red carpet and gold vitrine decal signage which hints that creatives live here. Going from dark to light through space, the art studio itself is flooded with daylight, accented with soft finishes and artwork pops and remains centre stage. X’s and O’s lighting harken back to simple childhood games and offer a reminder of the studio’s target audience. A thoughtful mix of meeting spaces combined with individual work settings ensure individuals can get down to work. Common areas strategically placed directly off reception and away from focused work allows for uproarious laughter and casual collaboration. Biophilia and wellness were carefully considered, with access to daylight, quiet reflection spaces, and the inclusion of a lush plant program that was the top employee-requested feature.

In 2017 Ontario Power Generation refined their business practices and culture to more closely connect to their purpose and values. Having worked out of their existing office since the 1970s, their four different energy sectors were siloed in inefficient and underutilized space. The new space connects to the progressive values of OPG and the purpose of their business, namely power, science, technology, and natural resources. 246 private offices were retired in favour of unassigned seating, with key meeting spaces grouped by neighbourhoods for focused work to collaboration and community spaces. The reception desk is made of steel tubes to mimic the nuclear calandria cooling tubes; The Boardwalk, an open environment along the window spanning the length of the floor, is fashioned with outdoor furniture as would be seen in a park; a feature wall includes hard hats from power plants and partnering organizations; display shelving features historical artifacts from OPG’s history; and aboriginal artwork adorns the walls throughout. Environmental graphics in meeting rooms depict stylized, abstract images of earth elements as well as their other facilities.

In order to create a customized workplace for Spin Master that is a reflection of their brand and culture, our strategy eschewed as much corporate office interior as possible. The ground floor reception draws guests in, leading them up a stack of toy blocks into a five-floor factory of innovation. New windows add light to double height spaces while a new interconnected stair promotes easy circulation, connecting all floors into one unified studio. Modules of open work zones are arranged around the perimeter to provide access to light, with an inner layer of collaboration hubs adjacent to flexible work and meeting spaces near the building core. Bright day-lit spaces, ubiquitous biophilia, and playfulness of the brands portrayed throughout create an energetic incubator of ideas. Light woods, saturated colour, focused lighting, playful graphics, and three-dimensional installations were layered into the space, creating an environment that truly embodies the feel of a toy workshop.

With a decision to move away from the traditional office to a flexible workplace, The Co-operators piloted this new chapter with their western Canadian headquarters in Regina. They sought to create a human-centric workplace deeply connected to their long-standing values of co-operation, folklore stories, and Canadian history. Stories of how the company was founded were translated into architectural features including the curved wooden wall at reception and the perforated ceiling that leads from the elevator lobby to the café: both reminiscent of the company’s journey from small acorn to mighty oak tree. A wall paneling pattern suggests heavy tractor tires referring back to The Co-operators agricultural history. The new LED lighting, HVAC upgrades, water, and fueling stations align with WELL design principles, making the space more comfortable for all users. Shared amenities such as the conference centre and new café give employees a space to take a break and connect with peers. As the first of several office re-designs across Canada, the new strategy balances brand consistency with moments that celebrate local culture and a sense of place.

In the Canadian office of the largest ride-sharing app in the world, the design team incorporated rhythym, repetition, and contrasting details to reflect movement, which is a key theme. The brief included establishing a culture of innovation and inclusion as well as providing avenues for health and wellness in the workplace, at a time when Uber was refreshing their branding guidelines to include internal workplace requirements and standards. A motion sensor on the reception floor catches the attention of visitors and guides them to the reception desk. The lighting installation also provides a changeable element which can be modified in recognition of observances such as Pride and Black History Month. Amenity spaces have been mixed in with meeting rooms, lounges, dining areas, and other workspaces, and a dedicated community floor includes a ‘hands free area’ with open dining and meeting space, training rooms, external meeting and interview rooms. Drawing inspiration from Toronto, the design team installed a custom illustrated wallcovering celebrating local neighbourhoods, and new exterior doors designed to be level with the terrace grade now extends usable outdoor space for staff.
