IMPACT REPORT 2024

Welcome from the Head
I am exceptionally proud to be writing to you during my first few months as Head of Ipswich School with the purpose of introducing this year’s Impact Report.
As an Old Ipswichian (1981-88), I know from first-hand experience the benefits of an Ipswich School education. And the modern-day iteration of that education really is (to steal a great line from my predecessor Mr Nicholas Weaver) “second-to-none”.
I am dedicated to continuing to support the efforts that we all make to extend this education to as many children as possible who might thrive here, hence the fundraising focus of recent years on the provision of means-tested Bursaries. Our commitment remains to opening our doors to children who would not otherwise be able to become members of the School.
Alongside this, and in the face of the financial challenges presented to us by the removal of Business Rates relief in Spring 2025 as well as the much-publicised imposition of VAT on independent school fees, I will be working hard with senior colleagues and the Governing Body to do all that we can to ensure that we continue to move forward in terms of the quality of our educational provision.
With this in mind (and in addition to the ongoing commitment to Bursaries), we are identifying a programme of Estates/capital improvement projects that we will seek to prioritise and ‘bring forward’ as soon as we feel able to do so financially. 2

Whilst not an exhaustive list, these will include:
• Refurbishment of the Library and the Pavilion
• A complete overhaul of our Ivry Street cricket nets
• Opportunities to improve teaching facilities in Art and in Biology
• The installation of a state-of-the-art ‘Tech Desk’ into Great School to support Performing Arts of all sorts
• Investment in Boarding on the Anglesea Heights site on Ivry Street
• The creation of a brand-new strength-and-conditioning fitness suite
Please do get in touch if you would like more information about making your mark on Ipswich School by offering direct support for any of these projects.
To go back to where I started (above), I am so proud to be asked to lead our great school into the next chapter of its long and distinguished history. It is somewhere that has helped to shape the lives of generations of people. Thank you for the support that you have given the School in the past, for which we are all hugely grateful.
And if you would like to join me in helping to write that next chapter, either in terms of opportunities for pupils or in terms of continuing to invest in the improvement of the ‘fabric’ of this wonderful place, then please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Yours sincerely

NICK GREGORY HEAD

This year we celebrated our second Giving Day and were overjoyed with the support given to the School. It was a wonderful occasion, with the whole School community getting behind the three funds we support; The Bursary Fund, The Phoenix Hardship Fund and The Capital Estate Fund.
The day kicked off with a mass workout on School field where the pupils had a great time making their way around 12 Hiit (high intensity impact training) stations. It was a beautiful morning with everyone in high spirits.
Cake and ice cream are always popular, and the 36-hour event saw a massive sale of both to raise more funds. We also arranged a visit from the Prep pupils to the tuck shop again this year to use the facility that the ‘big kids’ enjoy every day. Many Old Ipswichians will remember the tuck shop from their time at the School as it has been in the same place for at least 70 years!
Further afield we had donations come in from all over the globe with OIs giving from 12 different countries. We are so thrilled that although people move far away after their time at the School, they still wish to support education here.
We had so much support from our wider community and despite a serious email glitch that was out of our control, the day raised £97,414 for the School. Felaw House won the house challenge with the most donations on the day.
The Giving Day is our biennial fundraiser, and we hope to hold another in 2026. In the meantime please do get in touch if you are inspired to give to the School, and leave your mark on the lives of those who attend this special place.
It was a wonderful day focused on celebrating being part of this amazing community as well as supporting pupils in their education here, pupils like Mart:
Thank you from Mart
“I came to the School almost two years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. I am so very lucky to benefit from a fully funded rugby scholarship given to the School by generous supporters from our wider community. For this I will be eternally grateful.

This education has changed my life, I have made friends I will keep for my lifetime, I have skills I will draw upon both on and off the rugby pitch and I look forward to my future. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you, and to encourage others to help young people like me fulfil their potential through education. Thank you”.

The Future of Your School
The School, like the rest of the sector, is facing unprecedented challenges. But our dedication remains, and we must react to the current climate by making this School the very best that it can be. As indicated in the Head’s opening words, alongside supporting bursaries, we must now also support our estate.
Our buildings on Henley Road are now more than 170 years old and some of our newer buildings, like the library, are in need of refurbishment. In the coming months and years we will work to upgrade our facilities, focusing on some key projects to ensure that we can continue to offer the very best education possible. We want to give our pupils a wonderful school experience, with academic success at its core complemented by an outstanding co-curricular offering that is so important in developing well-rounded and confident young people.
Our Capital Fund allows us to update and maintain the buildings and facilities at Ipswich School, as well as direct funding to subjects that are special to you.
Some key projects we would like help with in the coming months include:
• Refurbishment of the Pavilion including the introduction of a girls honours board. Girls Cricket has gone from strength to strength, with our current U18’s and U16’s holding national titles. We want to update the Pavilion inside including giving our girls their rightful space in the history of Cricket at Ipswich School.
• Refurbishment of the Library. Now a Grade II listed building, the Library was opened in 1982 and has remained largely unchanged. It has retained much of it’s mid-century charm but it is now time to replace it’s internal fixtures and furniture; furniture that thousands of OIs will remember sitting at whilst studying or looking out on School Field.
• Opportunities to improve teaching facilities in Art and in Biology
• A complete overhaul of our School Field Cricket nets
• The installation of a state-of-the-art ‘Tech Desk’ into Great School to support Performing Arts of all sorts.
• Investment in Boarding on the Anglesea Heights site on Ivry Street.
• The creation of a brand-new strength and conditioning fitness suite suitable for the requirements of all of our pupils, whether they have aspirations of elite level achievement or are working hard to be the best that they can be and develop a positive and healthy attitude to exercise and wellbeing.
We believe that by matching our academic offering with first-class facilities we will only strengthen our position as the best school in Suffolk. The stronger and more resilient we are, the better position we will be in to open our doors even wider to more children through scholarship and bursarial support, which is our main charitable purpose.
In the past we have been fortunate enough to receive support from Old Ipswichians, parents and supporters of the School who have helped realise some wonderful projects including, the Chapel lighting (Philip Ind OI) The Lingwood Pavilion (Nigel Lingwood OI) and The Lodge Day Nursery (Roy Towns OI). These facilities make a significant difference to the lives of our pupils.

Please do consider supporting a capital project and make your mark on Ipswich School.

How to Support Ipswich School
Whether your donation is large or small, immediate, or as part of a legacy gift, it makes a significant difference to the children we support and the future of Ipswich School.
There are three funds you can support:
The Phoenix Fund
is designed to step in when a family has an unexpected change in circumstances whilst at Ipswich School. This could be a loss of income through illness, job loss and redundancies or even the death of a parent. Keeping a child’s education stable during the formative years is crucial for stability and future attainment.
The Bursary Fund
supports children on 100% fee assistance and is designed to open access to an Ipswich School education. This fund provides opportunity to those in our community whose potential far outweighs their income and for whom an education here is beyond their family’s means. The impact of a bursary can be life-changing for the recipient and their family.
The Capital Fund
allows us to update and maintain the buildings and facilities at Ipswich School as well as direct funds to individual subjects. Over the years, funds have been donated to such areas as the Lodge Day Nursery, the Music School, Sports cameras and the Lingwood Pavilion as well as funds for items such as lighting in the School Chapel, a new projector in Little School and the Prep School playground.

There are various ways you can support the School:

The Gift of a Lifetime LEAVING A LEGACY
From the very beginnings of the School we have benefitted from gifts left in Wills which have left an incredible mark on the life of Ipswich School. These gifts, from forward thinking individuals have ensured the school has continued to not only survive, but thrive.
For many people, leaving a gift in their Will allows them to be more generous than is possible in their lifetime, and can give a real sense of leaving a mark upon the school and have an impact on the next generation of Ipswichians. We are incredibly grateful for these acts of kindness which truly impact individual lives.
TYPES OF LEGACY GIVING
A residuary legacy
This is the balance of your estate after all taxes, expenses and gifts to other beneficiaries are settled.
A pecuniary legacy
A fixed amount. Due to inflation, this gift could lose its value so this may be worth index-linking.
A specific legacy
A gift of a specific item, shares or antiques. This item needs to be very clearly described to reduce any possible confusion.
A reversionary legacy

This is a gift that you intend another recipient to have use of during their lifetime. The gift is then passed onto the school upon the death of the named individual.

Professional advice
We strongly advise that anyone wishing to make a Will or amend an existing Will should seek independent professional advice.
Please let us know
We really appreciate that making a Will is a highly personal and sensitive matter. If you do decide to leave a gift to the School in your Will, we would be grateful if you could let us know to allow us to thank you properly and ensure we fully understand your wishes.
Tax implications
Supporting a charity through your Will can have a positive impact on reducing the inheritance tax burden on your family or others named in your Will. The current tax threshold is £325,000. Any legacy given to charity is free from inheritance, capital gains and income tax and in addition, if you leave at least 10% of your estate to charity, inheritance tax on the balance falls to 36% rather than 40%.
Above all, writing a Will allows you to have control over your estate after your death. We absolutely understand that you will want to care for your loved ones first, but, if you decide to leave a gift to Ipswich School we promise to use your gift wisely, effectively and respecting your wishes.
“The
School provided me with the grounding, life skills and education that formed the foundation of my working career and life. A bequest to the School just feels the right way to reciprocate my good fortune by providing opportunities for current and future Ipswichians.”

SPENCER GLADWELL OI (1959-71)

Thank you
We are so grateful for your support as it allows us to help individuals fulfil their potential and give them the best possible start to their lives. We send a heartfelt “thank you” to those who continue to support the School and in turn the pupils we are able to support here. A special thanks to those who have passed away this year and remembered the School in their Will - thank you.

Thank You
As I take up the role of the Chair of Governors of this great School, and as an Old Ipswichian myself, it is with pride that I close this year’s Impact Report.
Since I left the School as a pupil in 1973 a great many changes have taken place but the underlying values of decency and respect and the ethos of hard work are unchanged. The provision of education here remains a wonderful foundation on which to build a life.
The power of education cannot be understated, and it is our responsibility to extend this valuable and defining experience of attending Ipswich School to more who can benefit from it.
As we navigate some of the most difficult times in our School’s history, we will need your help more than ever; it is days like this year’s Giving Day that remind us that this School has a very strong wider community around it, a community that when working together makes a very real and lasting difference to young people’s lives.
Thank you on behalf of the Governing committee, staff and pupils for your generous contributions and support.
Thank you
Nigel Farthing (OI
