Before school: 07.00 - 08.40
After school: 16.15 - 18.30
After study time: 20.00 - 21.30
Years 9 and 10 hand in their mobile phones at 21:30 and collect them after 07:00 the next day.
For academic issues or concerns, please contact your child’s tutor, Head of House or Head of Section via the School reception:

Reception is open Monday - Friday 08.30 - 17.00 and 09.00 - 12.30 on Saturdays.
For day-to-day boarding concerns, please contact the assistant houseparents.
For non urgent issues, email is the best. For more urgent issues, call the duty staff at the houses.
The duty phone is with a member of boarding staff from 07.30 - 22.30.
There is an emergency nightline for concerns that need to be addressed
straight away, during the night. This is only answered from 22.30 - 07.30.
If you have concerns about aspects of boarding that are not being addressed by assistant houseparents, or you are worried about your child and wish to contact Mrs Christie, email is best during the day and early evening. Coming to a new boarding house can be a little daunting. Our aim is to make you feel as happy and as settled as you can be, so that you thrive and achieve your goals.
There is a team of friendly staff, who are experienced in looking after boarders. We work hard to make sure you are cared for and feel supported in all that you do. As well as your tutor in school, there is also a member of staff on duty from 07:00 – 22:30 (houseparents are on call overnight). They are there for you to have a chat with, tell them about your school day and let them know if you are worried about anything.
We are a small community and it is easy to get to know everyone in the house. Come along to weekend trips (local and further afield) and activities and get to know all the boarders. There is a folder in the reception area, with local places to visit and fun things to do. Let me know if you would like to go to any.
I hope that you enjoy your time with us and you make the most of what is on offer, in school, at the boarding houses and locally.
Mrs Christie Head of BoardingFor six years, and I’ve been a chemistry teacher at Ipswich School for 20 years.
What’s your favourite boarding house meal?
Paella, which the chef cooks in a massive paella pan.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the social time with boarders, and I laugh every day! Plus I really enjoy going to watch boarders in their sports fixtures, to represent their parents who can’t be there.
Boarding provides a safe, supportive, caring and happy environment in order for boarders to develop and thrive. We aim to support the boarders in all that they do and encourage them to try new things and to discover, and nurture their passions. Boarders contribute to the ethos of the boarding houses by being kind and caring towards one another, and by being polite to all staff.
Five minutes with Mrs ChristieAs well as being a maths teacher, Miss Cooley is a keen baker and often organises baking activities at weekends. She is a professional French Horn player, a National Fives Champion and German speaker. She is on duty two evenings a week at Westwood and assists me in the running of boarding at Ipswich School
Miss HalfordThompson
Miss Halford Thompson is the houseparent at Anglesea Heights and she is also our School Nurse (known as Matron). She is an excellent baker (much to our delight) and a brilliant dressmaker!
These people look after your medical needs - they give you over-the-counter remedies for minor ailments and book medical appointments for you.
You see them when you return to your boarding house after your day at school; they will be waiting to greet you with a drink and a biscuit. They are always willing to listen and are good people to talk to if you need advice, or just want to have a chat.
They also supervise the cleaning and laundry - so if you have something missing, they are the first people you should turn to for help.
Mrs Barnes is a matron and works between Westwood House and Anglesea Heights, where she is available for help and support. She is a mother of two and enjoys walking and socialising with family and friends.
Mrs Slee is at Westwood on Monday afternoons and Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. She also works on Thursday and Friday afternoons at Anglesea Heights, so all our boarders will get to know her.
Mrs Wright is on duty at Westwood on Monday and Thursday mornings, and Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.
These teachers do one duty a week and one weekend duty per half term.
Mr Gall has been at Ipswich School for over a decade and is thrilled to be involved with boarding. “I’m here to help you have a wonderful time with us and make memories.”
He is a keen sportsman, but he realises that the older he gets, the better he was!
Ms Denby is a Computer Science teacher and a tutor at Anglesea Heights.
As the school’s chaplain, art teacher and crafternoon activity leader, the Reverend (known as Rev) is a very busy person. However, every Thursday she comes up to Westwood to have supper with us and chat to boarders. Rev is a brilliant listener and a great person to talk to if you are worried about anything at school or in boarding.
Mr Millington works in the admissions office during the week and at Westwood on Sundays. He is also one of our visiting music teachers.
He is responsible for collating all holiday information and taxi requests for boarders and assists in the collection of BRPs and Police registrations, for the over 16s.
Mrs Christie’s husband, Mr Christie, is very much part of the team. Mr Christie has been an Emergency Nurse for over 17 years and is a Nurse Practitioner - a role he has had for ten years. If you are feeling unwell and Matron is not on duty, then Mr Christie will be called upon for his medical opinion.

In order to prepare you for life beyond Ipswich School, we ask you to take some responsibility in keeping your rooms and the house tidy. The list of responsibilities was drawn up by the Boarding Student Council. At evenings and weekends, if you do not tidy up – no one does!
1 Take mugs back to the dining room. No eating in bedrooms. 2 Keep your room tidy – clear the floor and make your bed. 3 Come to meals to register – even if you have cancelled the meal. 4 See duty staff when you get in from school or town etc. 5 Label your clothing clearly. 6 Wash up the dishes and clean the kitchen (Years 11 to 13). 7 Put your laundry out regularly and collect it every day. 8 Keep your noise down. Quiet time is 22:00 – 07:00, use headphones during this time. 9 Respect one another. 10 Take care of yourself - sleep before midnight, let staff know if you are unwell or worried. 11 Let a member of staff know where you are if you are late back from school. 12 Speak English in the common areas. 13 Report anything damaged. 14 Respect other people’s privacy. 15 Let staff or Chef know if you want your meals late or cancelled. 24 hrs notice please. 16 Report behaviour that you think is inappropriate.
Wipe down dining tables when you have finished eating, including if you have had a takeaway meal.
You will need your school uniform and leisure clothes. Do not bring too many clothes. We suggest:
• Underwear
• Nightwear
• Jeans or leggings (EAL lessons on Saturday mornings require smart dress)
• Comfortable trousers/sweatpants
• Shorts (in the Summer term)
• A few T-shirts
• Swimming trunks or costume –there is a pool nearby (optional)
• Hoodie, tracksuit top or jumper
• Trainers
• Flip-flops or slippers - no bare feet about the house please
• Waterproof coat (especially as you will be walking the short distance to and from school)
• You will also need a wash kit and two bath towels
• Umbrella
• A set of ‘smart’ clothes for formal dinners
Coes (www.coes.co.uk) supplies some essential items and you can get uniform from them in three ways:
Book an appointment online to go into the store and try on the uniform before you buy it.
Order the uniform online and have it delivered to Westwood.
Let us order it for you. An assistant houseparent will write to you during the summer holiday, to see if you need help arranging your uniform. If you do want help, you will be asked for measurements. We will order for you and pay, and the sum is placed onto your next term’s school fees.
Full details of the school uniform and sports kit requirements are on my.ipswich.school
On average boarders suggest £150 per term. £5, £10 and £20 notes are best. Many boarders have a bank account in the UK that their parents can transfer money to.
Large amounts of money can be put in the safe in the duty office and you can keep small amounts in your purse/
wallet. There is a lockable cupboard you can put valuables in, in your room. We can also get cash out, on request from parents or guardians and place the sum on the fees.
Yes! You just need a letter from the school confirming you are a student with us and you live with us.
Over 16s can open their own account. Under 16s need to do this with their guardian.
We have a supply of useful things you can buy with cash or put a sum on the fees. Town is a short walk, so most boarders like to shop on a Saturday afternoon.
All your clothes are washed using our own laundry. Please make sure your clothing is labelled with your first name and initial, for example, Joseph K.
It can take 48 hours to get laundry back, so put small amounts out every day.
Year 9 and 10 boarders share a room with one other person, all others have single study rooms. Can I
All boarders have somewhere to go to make snacks. Senior boarders (Years 1113) have small kitchens to use and junior boarders can use facilities in the dining hall. Toasties are a favourite!
For hygiene reasons, boarders are not allowed to cook or store raw meat or fish.
International students have a 45 minute English lesson on Saturday morning. This is followed by a late breakfast/early lunch (brunch). After this students have free time to go into town to meet friends. There is lots to do in Ipswich, including a cinema, bowling alley and a busy marina, with lovely coffee shops and restaurants.
In the evening there is a choice of a movie to watch together, games room or astro to play on.
Sunday starts with the popular Lazy Breakfast, which is a continental breakfast that you can come to anytime
between 9:00-10:30, allowing you to have a lie-in.
On Sunday afternoons there is a trip, either to a local seaside town or an activity. There are also creative indoor activities, like baking or jewellery making which you can do if you do not want to go out.
Yes, this is a lovely thing to do. There are rules about how you get to and from the place you visit and it also needs consent from your parents/guardians - so do not leave it too late to organise.
There are forms you need to fill in, these are available from the duty office.
Boarding houses have first aid trained staff on duty. Unwell students can call the duty mobile phone number (as shown in your handbooks and on notice boards) and speak to staff about how they feel. The duty offices have over the counter remedies that staff are trained to give out. We will talk to the School Nurse about your symptoms and contact your parents, if you cannot go to school.
If you are very unwell, we will call a doctor for advice and they will decide whether they need to see you.
No, we supply all the medicine you need. If you do bring medicine, it must be handed over to boarding staff, with a translation into English of ingredients and use.
On their first arrival at Westwood, new boarders are expected to arrive with a parent or guardian.
Under 16s may not travel alone to and from airports. If your child’s guardian cannot do it, we will organise a taxi and add the cost to the fees.
Airlines expect under 16s to be taken to the check in by an adult - most airlines provide this service. The taxi drivers we use will also do this.
All boarders, even those over 18, must have a guardian in the UK and must have an adult over 25 years old supervising them during the holidays or overnight visits.
Ipswich School has a number of different clubs which you can take part in at lunchtime or after school. The Britten Faculty of Music runs music ensembles such as the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Chapel Choir and Big Band, and the sports coaches organise training sessions for our focus sports – rugby, hockey, netball and cricket.
Some examples of the lunchtime clubs run by staff and students include:
• Model House of Commons
•
•
•
•
• Model United Nations
•
In the Boarding Houses weekend activity sessions may include:
• Sport on the astro
• Gym
• Basketball or badminton in sports hall
• Baking
• Crafts
• Using local facilities/clubs
• Visits to the beach and dry ski slope
If there’s something that you’d particularly like to do, just speak to the Boarding Staff who will do their best to help!
The School Rules apply to all Ipswich School sites, including the boarding houses and their grounds.
We are a small community and expect good behaviour at all times; these rules exist, therefore, to ensure you are kept safe and that the House runs smoothly. Everyone must be aware of, understand and respect these rules. If you would like to discuss the following rules, please speak to Mrs Christie, the Head of Boarding.
Please dress appropriately for a mixed gender boarding house.
Except when you are in your rooms or washing, you must wear something on your feet.
At breakfast, you may wear sleepwear as long as you wear clothing that covers your top and your legs to the knees.
If you are wearing a nightshirt, you should put on a dressing gown to come downstairs.
After sports or going to the gym, please shower before coming to meals.
Do personalise your rooms with pictures, but do ask permission before you buy extra items to go in there, such as fairy lights. Keep your rooms tidy and report any damage to duty staff.
You may NOT have electric heating devices in your room. This includes kettles, rice boilers, heaters and hotplates.
You can have hairdryers and hair straighteners, but the hair straighteners will need a heat proof mat.
For fire safety rules, all plugs must be UK kite marked plugs
Please be out of common areas 15 mins before these times.
Years 9 and 10 22.00 (22.30 on Fridays and Saturdays)
Years 11 - 13 22.30 (23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays)
To bring a car to boarding, or travel in another person’s car, written permission must be given from parents. Cars must be parked on Constitution Hill.
To be left clean and tidy, as you would like to find them.
When going out, always sign in and out, and tell duty staff when you are back.
Sunday - Thursday - 18.30
Friday and Saturday – 21.00
You may go into town after school (please text/call duty staff to let them know) but you must be back by 18.00. You should ask to have your supper saved if you are running late.
If you go out for supper, please cancel supper giving the chef at least 24 hours notice.
You may go out after these times with permission from the Head of Boarding.
YOU MUST ALWAYS TELL SOMEONE WHERE YOU ARE, NO MATTER WHAT THE TIME.
For trips outside of Ipswich or for overnight stays, you must fill in a form from the duty office and return it to the Head of Boarding. Your parents will also need to email the Head of Boarding to confirm that they know you are away from Westwood, unsupervised. If going to a sleepover or party, the Head of Boarding will want to talk to the parents in charge.
Students should not depart early at half terms and the end of terms, as this is disruptive to lessons. If there are no evening flights which enable students to travel after the end of lessons, then they should make every effort to arrange to stay with educational guardians overnight and travel the following morning.
The boarding houses are closed when the school is not in operation. There is no access over the holidays. Please do not arrange for parcels to be delivered over the summer holiday.
With many international students in the boarding houses, it is good manners to speak English in common areas, especially the dining room, games room and workroom, when joined by someone who does not speak your language.
Boarders must stick strictly to the age categories set for DVDs, videos, online activities and computer games. For example, those below 15 must not watch films classified as 15. In all cases, boarding staff have the final say about the suitability of a film, even if a student falls within the appropriate age category.
For any pupil given permission to visit the cinema, school rules and legal age restrictions apply. On a Saturday night, boarders should return immediately after the end of the film. Year 9 and 10 pupils may not attend the final screening. The cinema should not be visited during the week, unless special permission has been gained from the Head of Boarding. Force
PUPILS DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO USE FORCE TO CONTROL OR RESTRAIN ANOTHER BOARDER.
Staff may use reasonable force to prevent a pupil from injuring themselves or others or to prevent serious damage to property.
All visitors to the boarding house must stay in the seating area by the side door, until duty staff have met and spoken to them. Boarders’ family members and students of Ipswich School are welcome to visit at reasonable times, such as between school and supper time, or at weekends. At other times, or for guests other than family members or students at Ipswich School, boarders must seek permission from the duty member of staff. Whilst in the house, boarders and their guests must be respectful of other members of the house, particularly in their use of public spaces. Out of bounds areas must also be respected.
Overseas students must have an appointed guardian in this country. You must inform the Head of Boarding of any changes to your guardian’s details.
You are expected to attend meals. Breakfast in the week is compulsory. Mealtimes are a roll call so you need to come to the dining hall to register. Weekend meals can be cancelled on a Thursday evening. Takeaways are allowed, but not during PSC time. Tell staff you have ordered one as it means an adult will be coming onsite.
Protein shakes and energy drinks are banned. If you are required to have food supplements this needs to be mentioned on your medical form and discussed with houseparents.
All medication must be handed over to Matron. If you feel that it is appropriate for you to keep your own medicine, speak to the Head of Boarding or School Matron. Medicine brought overseas must come with the ingredients and use translated into English.
All boarders have access to the internet through the school’s wireless networks.
Access is switched off at your designated bedtime.
The internet is filtered and websites are blocked for three main reasons:
1. by content to filter out adult, malicious or illegal content
2. by time to remove distractions during the school day and, for boarders, PSC times
3. by year group for age-appropriateness.
Web filtering is constantly under review, and students are welcome to discuss the issue with the Head of Boarding.
If you use the school’s IT Helpdesk, remember that a member of school staff will respond to your email, so please be polite in your requests.
NO MOBILE PHONES TO BE USED AT MEALTIMES – CHAT TO EACH OTHER!
Do not touch other boarders’ private property.
In the main house, boys and girls may not go into each other’s rooms.
Years 12 and 13 - do not go into anyone’s room without permission.
Westwood and Anglesea Heights are non- smoking and alcohol free sites.
Over 18s may consume alcohol in UK pubs and restaurants, BUT YOU MUST NOT RETURN TO BOARDING HOUSES DRUNK.
These are held at all meals in the dining hall and in the duty office after school. You are expected to register:
Monday – Friday: 8am at breakfast and by 4.30pm after school. If you are too ill to come to breakfast, call the duty mobile. If you attend an after school club or go into town, please inform duty staff.
Saturday and Sunday: All mealtimes are a registration time.
Please keep money and valuables locked away. All boarders have a lockable cupboard in their room.
Reviewed with the Boarding Student Council 2020.Ipswich School welcomes both full and weekly boarders (from the UK and overseas) who wish to attend the School and who need, or prefer, residential accommodation.
All boarders belong to Westwood, the School’s mixed boarding house. Boarders in Years 9-13 are on the site at Westwood, while boarders in Year 12 - 13 live at a purpose-built house, adjacent to the main School site. Weekly boarders usually go home after school on Friday, though they may board on Friday evening if they are playing school games on Saturday.
Flexi boarding is offered if space is available.
Boarders are expected to contribute to the ethos of the Houses by being respectful, kind and caring towards one another, and by being polite to all staff.
outside the classroom, and to help them to find their own passions;
• to monitor our provision: pastoral, curricular and co-curricular, learning from the best that we do, to ensure that the only limit on pupils’ development is their own potential;
There is a dedicated pastoral team of Head of Boarding, Houseparents, Assistant Houseparents and House Tutors who deliver a high level of care to all our boarders by making sure medical, dietary and emotional needs are met.The Head of Boarding and Tutors are teachers at School and provide a vital link between the Boarding House and School; they also offer academic support and advice to the boarders when they undertake tasks set by subject teachers to be completed outside of lessons. The School’s Chaplain visits the boarders regularly, providing extra support and guidance.
• to look for new ways to achieve the high standards that the school aspires to, working in a smarter way by using a ‘less is more’ approach, and managing the demands on our pupils and staff;
• to strengthen the links in the ‘triangle’ joining parents, pupils and school, to ensure we communicate well and are all working together with a common purpose;
• to encourage our pupils to consider moral and spiritual values, to understand their place in the world and to develop a spirit of service within the community;
Both houses provide a safe, supportive, caring and happy environment in order for its pupils to develop and thrive. We aim to support the boarders in all that they do and encourage them to try new things and to discover, and nurture their passions.
The Boarding Houses work to reflect the aims of the School:
• to provide an environment where pupils feel safe and brave in all that they do;
• to present pupils with a wealth of opportunities, both inside and
• to equip our pupils with the skills to be happy in their success at Ipswich School and beyond.
Admission to the school is on the basis of interviews and tests, as per our Admissions Policy. Admission to boarding is dependent on the availability of appropriate dormitory/ study bedroom accommodation. It is the School’s policy to ensure equitable treatment for all pupils, both in terms of admission and when at the School.
Boarding pupils are fully integrated with day pupils during the school day –they share the same tutor groups and Houses and they do not return to their Houses at lunchtime. Their communal life as boarders takes place before and after school and, in the case of full boarders, at weekends.
Most pupils at Ipswich School are day pupils, and lessons are concentrated into a five-day week. This period is therefore more intensive than at schools that have lessons and compulsory activities on six or seven days a week. For full boarders, the weekends provide an essential time for relaxation as well as for completing PSC and participating in activities such as music practice, sport or drama.
sports pitch. Most pupils live in the main house, a Victorian mansion that has been converted into boarding accommodation and extended.
There is a boys’ part of the house, where the younger pupils sleep in small dormitories of up to three pupils, and a girls’ section with small dormitories for younger pupils and single study-bedrooms for older girls.
The Head of Boarding and her family have their accommodation in the main building and are easy to contact (by phone or intercom) should the need arise.
The older boys (Years 11-12) have study bedrooms in two self-contained buildings (Westwood 1 and Westwood
2) close to the main house.
The main house also has a dining hall and its own kitchens, communal study areas and recreation areas. There is also a room for meeting with duty staff, and a study for the Head of Boarding or other duty members of staff. There are additional recreation facilities and two music practice rooms in the nearby converted stable block which also houses the Westwood laundry.
are separated by a large common room. Access to the wings is controlled by swipe card and the accommodation is supervised by a designated member of staff. Each wing has a work room, with three computers, a table for quiet study and an area to make a hot drink. All boarders have single bedrooms with en-suite facilities. The common room has a TV area, dining area (with a kitchen to prepare drinks and snacks) and a lounge area. It is situated directly opposite the main School site, which gives the boarders good access to the facilities there.
Dining takes place in the main school during the week and at Westwood at weekends. There are two resident Houseparents, one of whom lives within the boarding house. They can be contacted by phone or intercom. A music practice room with piano is available in a neighbouring building. There is CCTV around and inside the building. All residential accommodation is protected at all times by fire alarms, and at night by intruder alarms, as well as combination locks on all external doors.
Westwood is located a short walk from the main school site and has pleasant surroundings of lawns and woodlands. It has an all-weather
Our Boarding House on the Anglesea Heights site has been specifically designed for our Year 13 boarders, it provides top quality accommodation and a boarding experience similar to that of a university hall of residence. The house has two separate wings for our male and female boarders, which
Supervision of pupils is organised and monitored by the Head of Boarding. There is a member of staff (the Head of Boarding/Houseparent) on duty each weekday evening. At weekends, there is a member of staff on duty, in the houses and one in the near vicinity. An Assistant Houseparent is on duty every day and, at night, a houseparent is in residence and is readily accessible.
As well as supervising the pupils and safeguarding their welfare, the boarding house staff have a responsibility for promoting pupils’ personal development and academic progress.
These duties are shared with staff in the day school, where key personnel include the Headmaster and Senior Deputy Head Pastoral (who is also the Designated Safeguarding Head), the Chaplain, the School Nurse (Matron), Heads of Lower School, Middle School and Sixth Form, Heads of House and Tutors. Staff are issued with job descriptions, and there is a Staff Handbook which sets out expectations in a wide range of situations.
Boarders are expected to follow the House Rules, as well as the School’s Code of Conduct, which promotes high standards of behaviour. We firmly believe that pupils deserve respect from each other and from staff, and that they should be happy at School. We therefore take a strong line on bullying: this is reinforced in Life Skills lessons and assemblies. The School works hard to promote an anti-bullying culture; pupils are encouraged to report bullying and to do all they can to prevent it.They can expect support from staff who will follow up allegations vigorously and take appropriate action.
Pupils with particular dietary requests, or who wish to follow cultural or religious practice that is not built into school life, are encouraged to express their requests to the Head of Boarding. The School will make every effort to address these requests.
The School has a Complaints and Appeals procedure which is displayed in the Houses and made available to any pupil or parent via the School’s website. Details of the School’s Independent Listener, The Children’s
Commissioner and Childline are posted on notice boards around the houses and are in the boarding handbooks.
Academic progress, involvement in extracurricular events and personal development are closely monitored by the School and reported to parents as well as pupils on a regular basis. Personal contact with parents is welcomed. Parents are encouraged to email boarding staff about any boarding issues. The Head of Boarding organises Zoom meetings with new boarders and their parents, before their arrival in September.
Further details about the School are available in the Prospectus and on the School’s website: www.ipswich. school.
For each individual. For the community. For each other. For others.
For our subjects and activities. For the transforming power of education to realise potential.
Within each individual, our pupils and our staff, to grow and excel in all that they do.
Clear, comprehensive and timely.
