ADVERTORIAL

A Smile is a Curve that sets everything else Straight Life can be a lot more straight forward if you own a confident attractive smile. People who are self-conscious about their smile can often be mistaken for being aloof, grumpy or rude. We can help you change that at The Tuddenham Road Dental Surgery. One of the latest developments in dentistry is the introduction of Short Term Adult Orthodontics. The aim is to help anyone from the age of 18 to 80 achieve an aesthetically pleasing symmetrical natural smile. We strive to deliver results in 4 to 9 months depending on the severity of the crowding or displacement of the teeth. The focus is to level and align the teeth using white wires and clear brackets or alternatively clear

removable aligners which looks like very thin clear mouth guards. Most people function well with their teeth even if they are crowded. This has changed the approach of cosmetically focused orthodontics. By not attempting to correct molar discrepancies and root angles which patients are often not even aware of, the treatment time can be reduced from the average 24months to a

much more acceptable 6months. This is where SixMonthSmiles has revolutionised the way cosmetic dentists approach treatment planning. We no longer only have veneers and crowns which requires drilling away large amounts of healthy tooth surface as options to make a smile more beautiful. By levelling and aligning your own teeth with minor adjustments like recontouring and whitening after braces we can produce amazing results at a lower cost. Both biologically and financially! The beauty of SixMonthSmiles is how the braces are hardly noticeable at a social distance. Gone are the

days of black train tracks that enters a room before you do, now you could be half way through treatment before your friends and colleagues notice! Call The Tuddenham Road Dental Surgery today to book your consultation for Short Term Adult Orthodontics. Mr Hendriks will take some photos of your teeth and together you can identify your main complaint. He will explain your treatment options and what to expect. Once you are happy with the proposed plan you can book the records appointment and get excited about your new smile!

Grab a Fork and Walk On Sunday 4th September join the East of England’s leading family charity, Ormiston Families, as it hosts its annual Walk with a Fork event around the picturesque Helmingham Hall estate. The charity’s flagship event, which sees attendees taking on a seven mile amble around the countryside, is back for its fourth year in Suffolk.

Making its return to the beautiful Helmingham Hall estate near Otley, the walk will feature foodie delicacies from some of the region’s local producers at stops throughout the journey. Helmingham Hall was constructed by John Tollemache in 1487 and is now owned by Ormiston Families’ president, Lady Tollemache. With views, architecture and hidden valleys not usually seen by members of the public, Lady Tollemache has carefully chosen to open up one of her favourite walks for everyone to enjoy. The Suffolk Walk with a Fork event has kindly

been sponsored by Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival and suppliers offering tasty treats will include Aspall Suffolk Cyder, Suffolk Salami Co., Musk’s Sausages, The Fish Hut, Steve and Rebecca of Somerleyton Catering and many more. Gavin Lamb, relationship and events manager, Ormiston Families says, “We are hugely grateful to Lady Tollemache, Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival, all the local suppliers and the raft of volunteers who have kindly offered their support. A special thanks to Suffolk Folk band The Broadside Boys who will be performing at the barn. We simply couldn’t hold the event without the help of all these people and we are particularly grateful to the suppliers for taking the time to come along and provide delicious produce for our walkers. “We always look forward to Walk with a Fork as it makes a great summer’s day out for friends and family to enjoy the Suffolk countryside and its fantastic local food and drink, whilst ticket sales raise much needed funds for families in need across the region.” Proceeds from Walk with a Fork will be used to support Ormiston Families’ work providing services to support children and young people across East Anglia, helping to improve their life chances. Identifying and responding to the needs of children, whatever challenges they face, the charity’s vision is of a world in which every child will be loved, nurtured and valued. • Tickets are £20 per person and children under five go for free. Dogs are welcome. Tickets can be booked via the website www.ormiston-families.eventbrite.com

Discover some of Ipswich’s historical buildings Heritage Open Days gives the opportunity for both residents and visitors to the town to explore some of Ipswich’s most historical buildings, many of which are not normally open to the public. More than 30 buildings will be open plus there will be other locations to visit along the way with free guided walks around some of the town’s sites and buildings of interest. As well as favourites like Willis, there are also buildings open this year for the first time. As always, there will be the ever popular free bus tour on a heritage bus provided by the Ipswich Transport Museum. A great opportunity for stopping off at many of the places open to visit, bring the youngsters! Several open buildings will also be providing refreshments. Alternatively, why not walk around the Saints and Blackfriars areas and sample some of the independent cafés. The Ipswich Society has produced a free colour glossy booklet complete with a map and details about each of the venues. This can be found in the Tourist Information Centre in St. Stephen’s Church, The Library in Northgate Street and other venues around Ipswich and East Anglia. Heritage Open Days takes place on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September. Wickham Market celebrates New Map

Wickham Market has produced a new map for the town thanks to support from Suffolk Coastal District Council. The map was designed by local Artist, John Robert who has produced stylised maps for other market towns including Woodbridge and Framlingham. £1,500 in funding was awarded to the Town Team in 2014/2015 to contribute towards the cost of the map. The project is part of the ongoing development and delivery of actions identified within the Wickham Market Town Team Action Plan. Suffolk Singers, directed by their dynamic Music Director Claire Weston, are giving a concert for Suffolk Age UK on Saturday 1st October at Debenham Community Centre. Harrison Cole will accompany them in a varied programme of music to suit all tastes (including Chilcott, Elgar, Grainger, Humperdink, Hutchings, Peterson-Berger, Rutter and Todd). The evening commences at 7.30pm and tickets are priced at £10.00, available from www.universe.com/suffolksingers or by calling 01473 359911. There is a bar for liquid refreshments and cabaret style seating with a range of delicious cakes by Meg’s Mixtures. There will also be a raffle on the night supporting Suffolk Age UK.

The double-sided map has been placed in the centre of the town, by the Market Square and includes details of the history of Wickham and the best parts for tourists to explore. Paula Scanlan, Town Team member, said, “We’d like to say a big thank you to the Council for supporting us with this. The new map is now in keeping with the town and perfectly illustrates our proud and rich history.” Councillor Andy Smith, cabinet member for Economic Development, said, “A lot of hard work has gone into the creation of Wickham’s new map which is now a perfect addition to the Market Square. I do hope residents and visitors will appreciate the thought that has gone into the detailed drawing.”

Now’s the time to take up golf Get into golf is the national campaign run by England Golf, helping people to start playing golf. Courses are available at golf clubs across Suffolk. Get into golf courses are beginner group coaching sessions that take place in a fun, social and group supported environment and give those taking part a taste for the sport, at an affordable, entry level price. The sessions are ideal for those who are looking to start playing golf or want to return to the sport after some time away. The majority of the coaching courses take place for one hour a week over a four-week period and cost as little as £5 per session. This then leads onto the opportunity for further improvers coaching or to go out on the golf course and play. Equipment is provided at all sessions so all you need to do is book online at www.getintogolf.org and get ready to have lots of fun whilst learning a new skill!

and thought this was an ideal place to start. I was a little apprehensive when I turned up to the first session but was met on the putting green by Ian Scott, the professional who was taking the class. Ian immediately made me feel at ease and I could straight away see that our group was going to be very supportive and a lot of fun! There were six people of all different ages and golfing experience within our Get into golf group.

Aaron ended by saying “Having now finished the course, I would recommend a Get into golf course to anyone who is thinking of starting or looking to get back into golf. The sessions took place in a fun and suitable environment and we were encouraged to talk and help each other throughout. Ian gave me some great pointers around the basics of golf and I now feel a lot more relaxed about the upcoming golf day. After the golf day I’m going to enquire about membership of the nine-hole course at Ipswich, as well as speaking to Ian about booking onto a Get into golf improvers course”.

Aaron’s Story Aaron Jacobs enjoyed his beginner Get into golf course so much that he is now looking to join his local club. He said “I had played golf a few times around the nine-hole course at Ipswich Golf Club but had never really considered going further with golf. This changed slightly when I was invited to a work golf day, that is taking place later on this year. Immediately I thought this is something I want to participate in, but I was slightly concerned that the majority of those taking part were regular golfers who had played the game for years. Aaron continued, “This was when I came across Get into golf. I was made aware of a beginners’ course that was taking place at Ipswich Golf Club

The final two weeks were spent on the course. Week three was using all our clubs and trying to work out roughly how far each club went and we finished with a team competition in week four. The team competition was a great way to finish as it brought the whole group together and allowed us to enjoy playing the course. I was also able to make a birdie on the 3rd hole and this showed me the improvement that had been made during the four-week course!”

“The four-week course took us through all aspects of the game, using the various facilities at Ipswich Golf Club. We started off in week one on the practice ground, with Ian talking us through some basics and allowing us to hit plenty of shots. Week two was spent on and around the putting green where we worked on putting, chipping and had a go at some bunker shots.

Ian Scott, PGA Professional at Ipswich Golf Club, who delivered Aaron’s course said “I’ve really enjoyed coaching Aaron and the whole group over the past four weeks. We have had a lot of fun and everyone has improved massively since the start of the coaching course. It has been great to see those taking part have been playing and practicing between sessions and we are now in the process of putting some dates together for an improvers course” To book and find your nearest course running in Suffolk please go to www.getintogolf.org/suffolk

Special anniversary for Tourist Information Centre in Stowmarket This year they celebrate 10 years since moving from their smaller premises in Wilkes Way to the larger centre at the front of The Museum of East Anglian Life. Tourist Information Centre (TIC) Coordinator, Annette Ellis said, “Being based at a major Heart of Suffolk visitor attraction and working in partnership with The Museum has proved a highly successful initiative ... as well as greatly increasing visitor numbers to the TIC, the Museum says that they have benefited greatly from a professional Front of House staff handling all admissions, visitors, memberships and much more besides - (including lost children, a model on assignment, the film crew for Private Peaceful - shot on location at The Museum - and even the odd celebrity visitor!)” The TIC operates the joint gift shop on the Museum’s behalf too, which has acquired quite a reputation as somewhere to find ‘something a little bit different’ - specialising in quality, good value items either made in Suffolk or with a local connection. Whilst some Tourist Information Centres have suffered reduced opening hours or moves to smaller or shared premises, in Stowmarket the partnership between Mid Suffolk District Council and the Suffolk Museum of the Year 2015 - itself a charity - has enabled them to continue to offer all services such as booking accommodation, coach trips and local events, alongside an enviable range and quantity of free information - both for local attractions and visitor guides covering the country - in fact everything that is required of a Visit Britain ‘Official Partner TIC’. Last year the TIC welcomed over 80,000 visitors - from across the UK & indeed the world - but is here equally with information, advice and inspiration for local residents too - so if you’ve never been in - please pop in to have a look around - you might even find something new to enjoy on your doorstep - especially if you have friends or family visiting! There will be a small celebratory event in October - so watch local press and social media for details! As well as being open seven days a week (summer) and six in winter, for walk in visitors, the TIC can also be contacted by phone 01449 676800, email tic@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk, via Facebook - Stowmarket TIC, or Twitter @moreStowmarket. www.heartofsuffolk.co.uk.

A feast of local food at the Woodbridge Shuck Festival

29th September until 2nd October

The Woodbridge Shuck Shellfish Festival is back for a fifth year, from 29th September until 2nd October. The festival brings together an exciting programme of foodie offers and events to celebrate local shellfish and other local produce. The Festival is a special celebration of the River Deben and the delicious produce found in and around it, and, this year’s event is set to be bigger and better than ever. The festival begins with a new event for 2016, The Pub Trawl on Thursday 29th September. Pubs in the area will be serving up Shuck themed beer and bar food and fizz and nibbles. The popular Shuck Shack, a pop up restaurant at The Tide Mill will take place on the evenings of Friday 30th September and Saturday 1st October. Catered by Stephen David and Rebecca Mackenzie of Somerleyton Private, diners will enjoy a beautifully prepared locallyinspired menu in this unique riverside landmark.

For a more casual yet equally tasty foodie experience, The Shuck Weekender takes place in and around The Tea Hut on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd October from 11am until 6pm with live music all weekend by the Deben Collective and other artists. Visitors can feast on deconstructed moules frites, fresh fish from the Deben, Squid, Pasta and Paella while enjoying something cold from the bar. There will be ice creams and non-fishy options too such as Woodbridge 5th Sea Scouts who will be serving up burgers. For the kids there will be plenty of entertainment throughout the weekend as well as a kids’ menu. New for this year, families can book children, aged one to eight years old, onto one of the Splat Messy Play sessions, visit Suffolk Wildlife Trust for a Marine talk and family quizzes and join in with games and giggles at the various stands. In a new twist, throughout the Shuck Weekender at The Tea Hut, there is the opportunity to buy freshly caught fish from Simpers and take it to The Crown’s adjoining stall to have it cooked to your liking right then and there.

The celebration of local seafood spills from the river right through the historic market town, with Shuck Specials on the menus at the town’s many restaurants, pubs and cafes. The Festival concludes with the highly anticipated annual ‘Safari Supper’ on Sunday 2nd October. Diners will meet at The Crown for drinks and canapes and go on to enjoy a three course meal. Moving between The Crown itself and the closely situated The Table and The Anchor. Jonathan Simper, co-founder of the Woodbridge Shuck, said, “It’s the fifth year of The Shuck and it will be the best yet. We have fabulous shellfish and other local produce prepared by top local chefs. If you’ve not been

before, come along and have a look. There’s plenty for people who aren’t so keen on fish and shellfish. We hope as many people as possible will come along and enjoy great local food with friends and family.” The event continues to be supported fully by Choose Woodbridge, The Tide Mill Living Museum and this year has benefited from a grant from SCDC Economic Services through their Sustainable Town and Village Economies programme. For the latest news, menus and events follow the festival on Twitter @ShuckFestival or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ShuckFestival. For more information, please visit www.thewoodbridgeshuck.org.uk or text SHUCK to 66777.

“The Tea Hut” extends a warm welcome to all who visit for the Shuck, especially on Saturday and Sunday when we will be hosting the daytime events with family fun, food and music to relax to. During the festival we will have Shuck Specials available in addition to our usual menu. We look forward to seeing you in Woodbridge on the banks of the River Deben down by the Model Boat Pond. 8

Autumn approaches at owl sanctuary At Suffolk Owl Sanctuary the leaves are turning colour and the flying displays will soon be drawing to an end. For those who have yet to enjoy a visit to the centre this year, the flying team will still be in action, thrice daily - at 11.30am, 1pm and 3.30pm - until Friday September 30th. From the beginning of October, visitors are still welcomed to the sanctuary daily and are able to enjoy over 80 owls and birds of prey residing in weatherings and spacious, naturalistic aviaries. Over the autumn and winter months the flying team birds will enjoy a well earned rest and the opportunity to moult and mingle with their avian companions in a more relaxed environment. A few months of “birdie down time” will enable them to enjoy a break from training with a less structured regime - and gain a couple of ounces! Much like human “down time”… Meerkat talks continue throughout the winter months at 11am and 3pm

Ta Ta Trotters

You can now get your trotters on tickets to say goodbye to your favourite pigs after the Pigs Gone Wild trail ends in September. The hugely popular trail has seen thousands of local, national, and even international, visitors coming to Ipswich to follow the trail and collect the original 69 stunning sculptures using the Pigs Gone Wild map and app – plus the new bonus pig Dr Trott/Nurse Honey-Cured. There are still four weeks left to enjoy seeing them on the streets of the town.

and close encounters with these entertaining animals are still available please book in advance with the admin team on 0345 680 7897. Although formal flying displays with informative commentaries do not resume until Easter 2017, visitors are very welcome to watch the falconry team exercising the hawks and falcons used for a variety of activities throughout the winter. Further details of courses including Understanding Owls, Appreciating Birds of Prey and Hunting with Hawks are available from the admin and gift shop team and should be booked in advance. The sanctuary’s admission prices are reduced during the winter months, to reflect the temporary pause in the usual flying display itinerary. The “come-and-go” tickets remain excellent value for money; valid for a full day, from 10am until 5pm, allowing visitors freedom of movement between the sanctuary, restaurant and other attractions on the Stonham Barns site. The sanctuary also includes a pretty Woodland Walk with shy red squirrel colony, cheeky meerkat family, wildlife ponds, bug hotels and ladybird houses. There is a relaxing Sensory Garden featuring raised “touch and smell” herb garden, tactile sculptural seating, water feature and wheelchair accessible picnic tables. Visitors can also enjoy a new children’s play area featuring wheelchair accessible equipment and tumble safe surface. The indoor interactive Discovery Centre is situated adjacent to the unique owlie gift shop. Level tarmac paths link all areas of the sanctuary and information boards are overlaid in Braille. • For further details please visit www.owl-help.org.uk or phone 0345 680 7897.

Take on a once in a lifetime challenge for your local hospice Take on the challenge of a lifetime and cycle from London to Paris in 2017 to raise funds for St Elizabeth Hospice. The local charity is looking for 60 supporters to take on the 300 mile bike ride from London to Paris between 19th and 24th September 2017, and have already filled a number of the spaces. Joanne Rodger, St Elizabeth Hospice’s events and challenges fundraiser, said, “We are really excited to offer people the chance to cycle from London to Paris next year as part of this group, as it is a great opportunity to complete such a fantastic challenge. “Those participants that sign up now still have over a year to train and to fundraise, so we are eager to get as many people signed up as soon as possible. It will also mean more time for the group to get to know one another, allowing them to bond and work together ahead of the event. “People of all cycling abilities and experiences can take part and everyone who signs up will be supported with their training and fundraising from now until they return from Paris. “All the money raised from this exhilarating experience will go towards providing care and support to patients and their families wherever it is need, whether at home, in the community and at the hospice.”

• For more information about the London to Paris Cycle Ride please contact Joanne Rodger, events and challenges fundraiser at St Elizabeth Hospice on joanne.rodger@stelizabethhospice.org.uk or visit www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/londontoparis

NEW SEASON FOR SOCIETY The chief interest of the Woodbridge Society is in the quality of the environment in which residents live. Bringing together people who are interested in Woodridge’s wellbeing, the preservation of it’s historic character and development in the future. The meetings themselves focus on matters of interest to the town and the first one of the new season is no exception. On Wednesday

12th October Clifford Smith will talk about his 16 years as chief executive of Suffolk County Council. Between 1974 and 1990 he lead the newly-formed Council and oversaw some key developments which affected how Woodbridge is today. Please come and join Society members for a glass of wine and an interesting talk: the meeting is at 7.30pm in the hall of the Abbey School, best reached from Cumberland Street.

A month later - on Wednesday 9th November the Society will be given a special introduction to what will be one of the key events in Woodbridge next year. In May 2017 Woodbridge will celebrate the opening of the new Whisstocks development including the splendid community facilities that have been built into the design. The centrepiece of the celebration will be a pageant written and performed by Woodbridge people. Again the meeting will be in the Abbey School hall at 7.30pm.

Ladies are just having a Ball Seven local ladies are having a ball organising their first big event in aid of Cancer Research UK. The Ipswich Fundraising Group for Cancer Research is made up of seven Ipswich ladies, all of whom have a close connection to the national charity, and they’re currently very busy selling tickets for their Charity Ball in October. The event is being held at Trinity Park on Friday 7th October and will include a delicious three-course dinner and music from local renowned band, Talk of the Town, plus a fabulous auction and raffle. The group have previously organised a Turkish Night and have held numerous collections, raising more than £3,000 to date, but this is the first big event they have organised. Lynn Hunter, of Ipswich, co-chair of the group, said, “We are a relatively new group, and by the time the Ball rolls round, we won’t even have been together a year – it’s been a whirlwind of fundraising and organising, but we’re very proud of everything we have achieved so far. “The Ball is going to be fantastic night and is already being well supported by the local community, with many businesses donating brilliant auction prizes including a sailing trip for two, a three night stay in a country hotel for two and a gliding experience, plus many fantastic raffle prizes.” Lynn lost her son, Jason, to a brain tumour four years ago and is passionate about fundraising for the charity to help beat cancer sooner. She added, “After I lost Jase, I wanted to help and raise funds for Cancer Research and be part of a group working together to hold big events and raise thousands of pounds a year.”

Event on right track

Group secretary, Samantha Catling, is also dedicated to the cause after their pioneering research helped save her life. She said, “I was 22 when I was diagnosed with non-hodgkin lymphoma, it was a huge shock, and I knew that if I beat it, I would want to give something back to help ensure more people survive the disease. “I’ve now been in remission for three years and I am delighted to be working with these lovely ladies, united for this cause.” Tickets for the Ball are £45. Tables of eight to ten are also available. Tickets can be purchased from Lynn or Jilly by calling 07542 668812. • If you would like to support the group by volunteering for events and collections or to join the group, please contact Lynn or Jilly by emailing ipscancerresearch.frgrp1@virginmedia.com

New Opening Hours for Baylham House Farm With the children heading back to school Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm is a little quieter at this time of year. That just means the animals are even more pleased to see visitors, and will try no end of tricks to try to charm their way into getting more food and attention. The straw stack maze is still in place, providing even more places for children to explore and tire themselves out whilst the adults enjoy a well-earned cup of tea and a cake. With pigs and piglets, goats and kids, cows (and Tilly!) – the farm is a great place to entertain, educate and enthral. Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm is six miles north west of Ipswich, off the B1113 between Great Blakenham and Needham Market. Until the 4th of September, the farm is open Tuesday to Sunday and Bank Holidays from 10am until 5pm. From the 5th September, the farm will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday only. With entry prices at £7 for adults, £6 for concessions, £3 for children (aged 4-16) and under four’s free, it would be difficult to find a more entertaining and better value attraction in Suffolk. • For more information visit the website at www.baylham-house-farm.co.uk, check out Facebook or call 01473 830264.

Vote for Wool-I-am in museums competition

Ipswich Museum has entered the Suffolk Object of the Year 2016 competition and its chosen object is Wool-I-am, the famous woolly mammoth. No other object in Ipswich Museum attracts the same attention (or as many selfies) as the life-size reproduction of a mammoth, which dominates the entrance to its Natural History Gallery. The “Maidenhall Mammoth” acquired a new celebrity and a new name following a popular media poll held a couple of years ago. Now known as Wool-I-Am, his looming presence gives visitors an authentic sense of size and scale as he loftily surveys his surroundings, keeping a very beady eye on all who pass him by. A full list of entries taking part in the competition can be found on the Suffolk Museums website. To vote for Ipswich’s woolly mammoth please take part in the online poll: http://bit.ly/2bnb0D3 Ipswich Museum is so excited about the Object of the Year Award that it is running its very own competition. Museum staff are inviting children to come in and draw a picture of the Mammoth. This competition will close on 2nd September (end of school holidays), when a winner will be decided – the prize is a cuddly Wool-I-Am! Visit the Museum in High Street now and be in with a chance of winning. 13

Defibrillator installed at Ferry Another defibrillator has been installed in Felixstowe with support from Suffolk Coastal’s Enabling Community Budget. Cllr Andy Smith donated £1,490 from his budget to support the new portable device at Felixstowe Ferry which can be used by anyone to help restart the heart when someone has a cardiac arrest. This is the fourth device to be installed in the town with help from Suffolk Coastal, bringing the town’s total number of defibrillators to 11. A number of people nearby will be given training and told the key code needed to remove the defibrillator from the cabinet. The defibrillator has also been fitted with child pads and is registered with the ambulance service, so emergency callers can be told the code and be given instructions if not sure what to do.

Contributions to the new defibrillator have also come from Ipswich Amateur Boxing Club who donated

Deben Flower Club

The Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month except August at 7.30pm in Kirton Church Hall, Church Lane, Kirton, Near. Felixstowe. Visitors are always welcome £4.00. £200, Felixstowe Ferry Fairways Committee who gave £100 and Mr Bob Vince who provided £20.

Cllr Andy Smith, Ward Member for Felixstowe South, said, “These life-saving devices are incredibly valuable pieces of equipment that can importantly be used by anyone. The device talks you through the whole process in the time it takes an ambulance to arrive, which can make the difference between life and death for people suffering a cardiac arrest. “As somebody who has been through a heart attack and heart surgery, I fully understand the need for systems like this to be made available to the community and anyone visiting us. I’m proud to see Felixstowe now has a considerable number of these life-saving devices placed in crucial locations and I hope we can now support more being installed throughout the district.”

A (K)night of Comedy A Spectacular Festive Trip Back Down Memory Lane with Spamalot! The Company of Four are currently busy rehearsing for the extremely funny show - Spamalot which is to be performed at the Ipswich Regent in late October. Telling the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and the quest for the Holy Grail in song, Monty Python’s Spamalot features “a chorus line of legless knights, men in tights (with legs), killer rabbits and sexy dancing divas!” Monty Python’s Spamalot is adapted from the 1975 film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”. Like the film, it is a highly irreverent parody of the tale, but it differs from the film in many ways. This is a show that appeals to Monty Python fans as well as people who just like a fun show and a good night out. Spamalot will be at the Ipswich Regent on 21st and 22nd October with a 2.30pm matinee on the Saturday. To book your tickets simply call the Box Office on 01473 433100 Note: This show is suitable for all ages. However under 14s must be accompanied by an adult.

Neil Sands invites you to join him and his wonderful West End cast for an enchanting afternoon of festive nostalgia, when his new 2016 production of Christmas Memories appears at the Ipswich Corn Exchange on Monday 12th December at 2pm, as part of its 32 date nationwide tour. Start Christmas in style with the country’s most popular Christmas matinee nostalgia show, filled with over 60 of your all time Christmas favourite songs, many of your most loved Christmas carols in a heartwarming Victorian carol concert, over 40 changes of stunning costumes, and lots of good old fashioned festive fun. We can all be dreaming of a white Christmas, watching chestnuts roasting on an open fire or even rocking around the Christmas tree, as Neil joined by singing stars Gemma Turner and Angie Diggens, take you on sleigh ride back to a nostalgic winter wonderland and to a time when Christmas really was the most wonderful time of the year. Now in his 11th year of producing matinee nostalgia shows, and fresh from a sellout nationwide tour for his 90 Glorious Years show, Neil is really looking forward to the Christmas tour. “It’s always the most enjoyable tour of the year, bringing back so many memories of Christmas past. It’s especially exciting for me to be taking the show back to the Ipswich Corn Exchange, after a break of a couple of years.” So if you can remember when the spirit of Christmas was more important than receiving presents, and if you were really lucky you would find a silver sixpence or three penny bit in your Christmas pudding, then this is the show for you. Filled with enough Christmas joy to warm your heart on the coldest winters day.

Arts Council England announce £138k support for charity’s fundraising DanceEast is absolutely delighted to learn that it has been successful in its bid to the Catalyst Evolve programme. The organisation will receive up to £138,000 over the next three years to support their fundraising efforts. Catalyst Evolve provides match funding to arts organisations, for every pound raised by the charity, Arts Council England will give another pound, doubling the value of donations. The Arts Council funding will also be used to create capacity, enabling the organisation to develop new campaigns and a new approach to generating income. Brendan Keaney, DanceEast Artistic Director and Chief Executive said, “Catalyst Evolve is an opportunity for us to rethink the way in which we talk about what we do, to build greater awareness of our artistic programme. We deliver ground-breaking projects here at the Jerwood DanceHouse and in the wider community. For example, our collaboration with English National Ballet on a Dance for Parkinson’s project has been

incredibly successful. We are about to launch a programme with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures specifically aimed at carers for

Children’s Hospices for the last four years. “We are delighted that colleagues at Pacitti Company and Suffolk

people suffering with Dementia and we have been working with children and families from East Anglia’s

Artlink have also been successful, this is great news for Suffolk and particularly good news for Ipswich.

Ipswich has a growing arts and cultural offer and should be very proud. It is a sign of confidence that Arts Council are investing in our town and rewards the commitment of both Ipswich Borough Council and Suffolk County Council who continue to support local arts and cultural organisations.” Arts Council England recently announced the 140 projects that will collectively receive a total of £17.5 million through the Catalyst Evolve programme. Clare Titley, Director of Philanthropy, Arts Council England, said, “Arts and cultural organisations are working hard to attract new income and particularly to encourage more private giving. We can see from the number and quality of the applications that there is a real impetus among small and mid-sized organisations to make a step change in their approach to fundraising and develop their business models, delivering greater returns. I’m looking forward to seeing how our investment can have a real impact and watching the progress of the organisations towards their matched income targets over the next three years.”

Production guaranteed to be a real tragedy What a Tragedy! Two Rivers Theatre Company tackles the bards Macbeth on the 400th anniversary of the playwright’s death. Two Rivers Theatre company are back with their latest production of: The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s guild dramatic society’s production of Macbeth. “Macbeth” is not a play to be undertaken lightly and the ladies of The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society led by the indomitable Mrs Reece, are ready to rise to the challenge. Following nine months of painstaking rehearsals of their inventive interpretation of this classic tragedy, they are now eager to impress George Peach, the Adjudicator. This man has the power to send them through to the prestigious finals of the Area Drama Competition in Welwyn Garden City. This important night for the ladies starts so well but then events hilariously conspire to ensure that everything will not be “all right on the night”. Scenery and props develop a life of their own and, as if this isn’t enough, Mr Peach suddenly announces that they have eight and a half minutes left in which to finish most of the final Act - otherwise they’ll be disqualified! Will the intrepid ladies rise to the occasion in this uproarious comedy of errors? Val Eldridge, Director, was keen to put on some Shakespeare to mark the 400th anniversary of the playwright’s death, but was keen to add a comic and chaotic twist. The writers have ensured the classic dramatic speeches have all been preserved but interspersed with a bit of mayhem that will have the audience roaring with laughter throughout. “I’ve found a very talented cast and I’m delighted with their progress through rehearsals. Learning Shakespearian quotes, delivery and timing is difficult for even the best actors and the cast have applied themselves to this with great effect.” “Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble” was all the witches would say when questioned about what they were brewing. Lady Macbeth was more intent on washing her hands and would only comment “Out, damned spot! Out, I say!”, whilst Macbeth was in a murderous mood “Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand?” was his passing riposte. The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s guild dramatic society’s production of Macbeth is being performed from Wednesday 14th September to Saturday 17th September 2016 at the Sir John Mills Theatre, Gatacre Road, Ipswich. Tickets priced £9 for adults or £8 for concessions available from the Box Office 10am – 2pm Monday to Friday 01473 211498 or online at www.easternangles.co.uk.

Choosing the Perfect Wedding Dress Picking out a wedding dress is most often a wonderful dream that most women have from a very young age. But when the time comes to actually do this, the task can get rather daunting, to say the least.

Below you will find some very helpful tips to keep in

mind when you go to pick out your wedding dress - the dress of your dreams! First of all, every woman is different in shape and size. No two women are the same. This is why it is important that you know what type of dress best flatters your shape and size. Remember: It is not just about the dress; rather, it is about how you look in the dress. Wearing a pencil thin strapless gown when you are overweight will not compliment your figure. Neither will choosing a large puffy dress if you are on the shorter side. There are countless styles of dresses available on the market today. The best way to determine what style dress looks best on you is to try on a variety of styles. After carefully examining what type of dress accents your best features and covers your flaws, you will have a better idea of what style to purchase. Another thing you should consider when picking out a wedding dress is the colour of the dress. Although this seems like a ridiculous thing to consider - because most brides wear white - this is something that should also be carefully assessed. Keep in mind that even white has many tones and shades. Some women will look wonderful wearing pure white. But for other women, an off-white, champagne, or ivory colour may look much more flattering. It all depends on the type of skin tone and hair colour you have, as well as the style of dress you are choosing. Sometimes, women with dark hair and olive skin will look amazing in an ivory or champagne coloured dress - especially if it has

intricate beading on it. However, if the dress is plainer in style and more modern looking, the same woman may look good in pure white. Remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What you think looks superb may look less than attractive to someone else. This is why it is typically best to take at least one other person to pick out the dress with you. And, that brings us to a third point: taking someone with you to pick out the dress. If your mother (or mother figure) is alive and you have a good relationship with her, it is common that you would ask her to come along to choose a dress. And if you are keeping with tradition, you would also ask your future mother-inlaw to come along as well. Any bridesmaids, best friends, or trusted confidantes are also usually chosen to go. However, some women prefer to go alone - it is all up to the bride and is usually based on the type of wedding that will take place. It is also a good idea to bear in mind how you move in your chosen dress. It’s one thing to have the dress of your dreams that you look stunning in, however if you are finding difficult to sit, kneel etc in your chosen gown you will be in for an uncomfortable day. Remember that you will be wearing your dress all day, so make sure you feel comfortable in it as well as looking amazing. No matter what you choose to do, just remember that the final say about what dress to choose is up to you. It is your wedding day, and no one else’s!

Choosing Bridesmaid Dresses is both fun and stressful – with Shirley Lee The special moment of life is the time when something new takes place or change in the old patterns of life occurs. Marriage is such a moment, before marriage life has different priorities and the moment you enter into it, the priorities of life go through sudden change. Therefore, wedding or marriage is considered as a very special occasion in everybody’s life. In this very people want and perfect. possible, but

special occasion of life, everything to be special Though it is not always one can always try for it.

which flatters all your bridesmaids’ with all different body types can be a challenging task. However, to choosing the best dress is next to impossible, if you do not know the right source. Hence while going for your bridesmaid dress, certain important aspects are there to consider, such as wedding style, gown style, bridesmaids’ body types and most importantly your wedding budget. In order to create a beautiful bridesmaid dresses within your budget first, go through some bridal magazines, and take out some pictures of your favorites for your reference. You can also search on Internet for more ideas about how to go for a bridesmaid dress.

While planning for marriage, several things need to be taken care of which include invitation, venue, bride dresses and even the bridesmaid dresses.

Shopping for bridesmaid dresses is one of the biggest parts of planning a wedding that is both fun and stressful. Moreover, to choose a bridesmaid dress

It is said that if the dress of the bride is a floor-length gown, then her bridesmaids should wear the same length dress. Conventionally, the responsibility of choosing the style, colour, and fabric for all the bridesmaids’ dresses, is bestowed upon the bride and she takes this responsibility as a privilege to do so.

The bridesmaids’ body types may differ and therefore, some brides go for a dress manufacturer that provides different styles in the same fabric and colour with more elasticity. Almost in every occasion, whether you go for a traditional single bridesmaid dress or a flexible one, your main concern should be finding dresses that complement your wedding gown and wedding style altogether.

Always keep in mind that though you can’t order these beautiful bridesmaid dresses just like that, but as each dress manufacturer has his different size chart, so, in order to make sure their dress will fit them suitably, your bridesmaids need to get professionally measured by to boutique you are buying from.

Picking the best location for your wedding Your wedding day will likely express the personalities of the wedding couple with every detail taken as a small expression of what makes that couple who they are. This is also true for the venue that you choose as this is the place where you set the overall tone for your wedding and possibly also have your photos taken. Before committing to a venue read my brief guide of things to consider before cementing a deal. The location of a wedding can make a real difference to your day. A romantic castle, a traditional church, or even on top of London Bridge – each venue creates a completely different atmosphere. Before you decide where you’re going to get married, you will need to think of

the legal implications: not all venues are licensed to hold a marriage ceremony. In England, Wales and Scotland, marriages and civil partnerships can take place at: a register office; a building that has been approved for civil marriage, such as a stately home or hotel; or a church or any other registered religious building. Unfortunately, you can’t get married outdoors or in temporary structures like marquees. If you would like to find your local register office to have a non-religious ceremony, you can contact your local borough General Register Office. If you’d like to marry in a religious building, however, you will need to speak with the person who would officiate over your marriage there. They may have certain requirements about

how often you worship, or where you live. Perhaps a traditional church or country house is not what you’re looking for. If you would like to have a wedding or civil partnership ceremony in a more unusual location, there are plenty to choose from. The Natural History Museum will open its historic doors for your ceremony to take place under their vaulted ceilings and intricate arches. You’ll even have your dinner in the company of an impressive diplodocus skeleton! If you want to take your guests up to dizzy heights, then perhaps London’s Tower Bridge would be a venue to look at. You can enjoy stunning views over London as you say your vows in the Bridge Master’s dining room and then enjoy a glass of champagne forty five meters above the Thames on the bridge’s walkway or in the Victorian Engine Room.

After you have taken so much time to find a special venue, you will want to make sure you are financially protected against anything going wrong. In the worst case scenario, your venue might not be able to hold the event because of closure, damage, or any other unforeseen event. Wedding insurance also makes a difference, as it will protect you financially if the venue cannot hold the event. Your insurance policy will usually pay up to the amount stated in your schedule of cover in case your wedding needs to be delayed or canceled as a result of problems with the venue. Bad weather is also accounted for, as your wedding insurance will usually cover costs incurred if your guests can’t reach the venue due to adverse weather conditions. Josie Anderson

Giving away the Bride But who will give away the Groom?

There are some funny traditions in British weddings. One of them is the “giving away” of the bride. The bride’s father is meant to hand his daughter over to the new most important man of her life. This is of course a rather old-fashioned idea, but it can, never-the-less, be an emotional moment for both father and daughter. So why are the mother and son deprived of such a ceremony? In modern times, isn’t the father daughter relationship quite similar to the mother and son relationship? When a girl is a baby, her father is the first man she ever gets to know. And this is the same with a baby boy and his mother. Yet somehow a “daddy’s girl” is a more acceptable fixture of modern life than a “mummy’s boy”. There are old sayings about this sort of thing. One saying goes that when a son marries, the mother loses a son, but when the daughter marries, the family gains a son. The implication behind this is might be that the daughter is better at staying in touch with the family, and bringing her own loved ones into the fold of her family. Perhaps it’s also suggesting that when a man marries, he wants to please his wife more than he now wants to please his mother. So maybe the mother of the groom should give away the groom at the same time as the father of the bride gives away the bride. On the other hand, maybe the mother doesn’t want to think she is losing a son. If the old saying above still holds true, then the father isn’t actually giving away the bride, he is in fact going to collect a son. So, if we dissect more of these wedding traditions, and put them alongside old sayings, will we find that the opposite is true of many more of them? The throwing of the bouquet for example? Who knows. But even if some of these traditions stem from ideas that are now a little passe, it doesn’t mean that they can’t be enjoyed for the fun or the sentiment that they bring. For a father, giving away his daughter can be a very emotional and moving thing. It is the right way around, of course. It is like saying goodbye to your eighteen year old son or daughter before they go away to college or university. It is good that it is happening, and everyone is happy for everyone else, but still, a few tears might be shed. People like to laugh, and they also like to cry happy tears like this. So any tradition that creates either one of these responses, has to have it’s place in a good wedding day. Hasim Bham

Choosing a Photographer for Your Wedding

People don’t get married very often. Most marriages are planned to be the only or final time down the isle for the couple involved. Because of this, it is important that the occasion is recorded in a way that can be kept for years to come. Traditional wedding photography remains the most popular way to do this. With everything that needs to be planned for a wedding, some things can be overlooked that may cause problems down the road. Photography is an art and there are subtle differences in the approach to different areas of expertise. Even within wedding photography there is different styles to choose from. A contemporary style uses different backgrounds, poses, and angles to create images that different from most people’s idea of a wedding photo. These photos are very creative and unique and fit some couples very well. A traditional style uses a lot of still poses of the couple and of family and friends. This has been the status quo of wedding photography for years and is still a popular choice. One style that is gaining popularity is the photo-journalistic style. These photos are taken throughout the wedding events following and provide a chronological narration of the day. These photos are often taken without most people knowing and can create very fun albums. Meet the photographer well in advance of the special day. Have a discussion about the style you want and make sure they are comfortable with it. Get to know the photographer and make sure you and your future spouse are comfortable with them. Don’t forget to discuss how many photos you want taken, where they will be taken, the rate they charge, and any other questions you may have. Take a visit to the location where most of the photos will be taken. If this is the same as the wedding location you might want to take a visit with only the photography in mind. You can see how the light will land and if lighting needs to be added or removed. You can have a friend or family member take some practice photos to get an idea of poses or shots you may want to be taken later. These pictures can also be added to a scrapbook or wedding album. If you are going to have a large wedding party it may be a good idea to appoint a family member or close friend to be in charge of directing the photography. This person can make sure that all of the people that are supposed to be in a photo are present and not left out. This will expedite the photography process and help with keeping you from being too overloaded with responsibilities on your special day. Remember that weddings are supposed to be fun and don’t be afraid of having fun with the photography. The easiest photos to take are often the most cherished memories later on in life. Plan ahead and communicate your wishes to the photographer and everything will go smoothly. Derrick Anderson

Celebrate with a Celebrant!

Ask most people what the focal point of a wedding ceremony is and they’ll say it’s the joining together of two people in love. It’s an opportunity to get all the family and loved ones together to celebrate that love and witness the declaration of the vows a couple make to one another for the years ahead, whatever their beliefs, orientation or background. The focus has very little to do with the ‘legal registration’ of that marriage. That’s just a hoop to jump through in the process and one that can be done with a short

ceremony at the Registry Office, no rings, no vows, no fuss. Follow that with a Celebrant led Wedding Celebration Ceremony and put the focus firmly on the couple at the centre of the day. Celebrants have been professionally trained in all aspects of planning, writing and conducting personal ceremonies. Their ceremonies are not just restricted to venues with a wedding licence. They can be held outside in a garden or on a beach, in a favourite restaurant or a friend’s barn.

Couples can get creative with wording, vows, content and format. Poetry, music or readings can be included. Unlike Registrars, a Celebrant can include religious content - useful for couples coming from different faiths who want to feature it in the ceremony. Symbolic elements such as hand-fasting or ring warming can also be used creatively to personalise the ceremony without time worries.

A Celebrant will meet the couple months before the ceremony. They will get to know them and if they want, help them write their vows, liaising with them in the months running up to the big day. They will rehearse with the wedding party and work with other wedding professionals. A wedding ceremony should be memorable and as personal as it can be. No couples are the same, their path to love is unique, so a wedding ceremony should tell that story. For more information about how using the services of a Celebrant for your special day contact Bridget Garrett Ceremonies on 07913 203177. Perfect Wedding Gift

A wedding celebration is one of the finest celebrations that any one can experience. If you’re invited to a wedding you’ll want to arrive with a wedding gift that is sure to bring a smile to the face of the bride and groom. There are many types of wedding gifts that you can choose from but you’ll want to take your time deciding before you make your final choice. Take some time to ask yourself what the bride and groom might like. If you know them well enough you can buy them a more personal gift, such as framed pictures that mean something to them. If you’re don’t know much about the personal tastes of the newly married couple you’ll want to stick with wedding gifts that are more wide in range, such as small appliances, bottles of wine, or bedding. Make sure that you find out if there is a gift list and where it is, since this is a great way to get the bride and

groom something that they really want. You’ll want to wrap wedding gifts as creatively as you can to make an added impression for the couple. You can have the wrapping done professionally or you can buy fancy wrapping paper and do it yourself, adding bows and ribbons as adornment.

Take the gift to the reception, where someone will be on hand to take the gift from you and add it to the other presents. Wedding gifts are a big part of the wedding celebration and you can do your part by bringing along a gift that the new couple will remember for a life-time.

Open up opportunities for your kids at East of England Co-op Opticians The start of a new school year can be a daunting time for children, particularly those that struggle with reading difficulties, dyslexia, sensitivity to light, frequent headaches or may be on the autistic spectrum making it harder for them to keep up with their classmates. If you’ve spotted your child moving closer to or further away from the page, rubbing of eyes or blinking more than usual, these are all signs that a child could be struggling from the effects of visual stress. As many as one in five people in the UK experience visual stress but, for children in particular, will often be completely unaware that they see a page differently to others. Symptoms can include a blurring or movement of print, letters changing shape and size or patterns appearing on the page. Children with visual stress are also likely to experience rapid tiring, headaches and eye strain. The severity of symptoms can vary from person to person. If any of this sounds familiar then the experts at the East of England Co-op Opticians are here to help. Research has shown that the use of colour can alleviate many of these problems. Through a series of simple tests the Colorimetry experts can identify whether or not colour could help enable your child to read more easily. The assessment will identify which colour is best for an overlay.

Coloured Overlays

Coloured overlays are transparent sheets of coloured plastic in a range of colours that can be

laid over a page or book. They can help children to read more fluently by reducing the symptoms of visual stress. If overlays help reading, patients can progress to a full colorimetric assessment using an instrument called the Intuitive Colorimeter. The assessment finds the exact colour for precision-tinted lenses to suit each individual from a range of 100,000 colours.

Precision Tinted Lenses

These are a special colorimetric tint on lenses in a pair of glasses. These can be fitted to most frames and are useful if the child also requires lenses to help with other visual needs as they can be made either just coloured or with an optical prescription included. Whether or not your child is showing signs of visual stress, it’s recommended that children have their first sight test well before they start school, and then regularly throughout their school years. To find out if someone in your family could benefit from Colorimetric testing or to make an appointment, contact our friendly eye care team in Ipswich on 01473 226009. Alternatively, you can request an appointment online at www.eastofengland.coop/opticians

Visual Stress

Symptoms check list Do you… experience headaches or rapid tiring while reading? find yourself moving closer to or further away from the page as you’re reading? find you have problems focusing on blocks of black and white text; that print seems to move or blur, letters change size or shape and patterns appear on the page? catch yourself tracing lines of text as you go, rubbing your eyes more often than usual or even struggling to understand the line you’ve just read?

If any of the above sounds familiar then you may well benefit from colorimetry testing at your local Co-op Opticians.

App helps parents and their children With a child’s social skills and confidence topping parents’ list of concerns when it comes to starting school, a new app has been launched to help equip pre-schoolers with the core skills they’ll need in Reception. important pre-school skill.” Using fun games, activities and Ready for School is authored by parents’ own observations, Ready Paul and Ann Broadbent, two highly for School offers ideas and activities experienced teachers and advisors to help parents ensure their child who have written in excess of 600 makes the transition to school with ease. educational books. what clothes they would wear on a cold or hot day. These activities can help children understand and accept new rules when they start school, such as the need to wear a sunhat in the playground on a hot day. Paul says, “Basic letter recognition and counting is important in Reception and we cover these in the app, but at this age, it isn’t about giving your child a competitive academic edge. It’s the little things that can make a big difference. Being able to get dressed easily for PE, for example, can boost a child’s confidence and prevent any easily avoidable upsets. Doing up buttons or knowing the right order to get dressed in is easily practised at home. “Ready for School enables attention to be given to all the different aspects that get children off to a happy start. This means parents can be confident in the knowledge their child is well-prepped to adapt to the new demands of school life.” Ready for School is divided into three categories – Personal (such as dressing and friendship), Attitude

(including being considerate and concentration) and Learning (maths, writing and phonics). Parents are encouraged to work with children as they are asked a series of questions by the app. This allows them to use the activities as opportunities for discussion. The child or parent can then respond, either verbally or by interactive screen, to the questions. Results are recorded in different ways, according to the questions, and analysed before being fed back to the parent. This builds up a cumulative score to give a whole picture of a child’s readiness for school. If skills in certain areas need development, the app gives suggestions for further practical activities, such as specific card games to improve attention span, or role-playing ideas to increase confidence in communicating. The app costs £3.99 and is available to download from iTunes. For more information about the app visit www.readyforschool.co.uk

Students need licence for iPlayer The start of the academic year will bring many changes for students in Ipswich, including, for the first time, the need to buy a TV Licence to download or watch BBC programmes on demand. A change in the law means as of 1st September 2016, a licence will be needed to download or watch BBC programmes on demand, including catch up TV, on BBC iPlayer. Research by TV Licensing1 has revealed iPlayer is the most popular catch up platform used by students, ahead of sites such as YouTube and services including Netflix2.

studentinfo) page whether they are correctly licensed before the big move. And, of course, you still need to be covered by a licence for all live viewing and recording, no matter which channel you are watching or what device you are watching on.” Students who already have a licence will be covered automatically. Those who do not will need a licence from 1st September to watch BBC programmes on-demand on BBC iPlayer, including where iPlayer is accessed through another provider such as Sky or Virgin. A licence will not be needed to watch other on-demand services, such as ITV Player or Netflix. This applies to all devices, including a smart TV, desktop computer or laptop, mobile phone, tablet, digital box or games console. In limited circumstances, students can be covered by the licence at their parents’ address. The device must be powered by its own internal batteries – e.g. a tablet or mobile phone - and must not be plugged it into the mains when receiving television. This use is enabled by the Regulations governing TV Licensing. If you are at university, visit the dedicated TV Licence for students (tvlicensing.co.uk\studentinfo) FAQ section, or contact an adviser over the phone on 0300 790 6113.

NEW AND USED CYCLES The survey confirms two in three students view catch up TV, with many watching on-demand programmes. With less than a quarter (22%) of students taking a TV with them to university, online viewing on mobile devices has become by far the favoured way of consuming catch up TV content. Watching TV remains an integral part of university life with 84 per cent of students finding it gives them the chance to relax on their own and more than half (60 per cent) citing TV viewing as a great opportunity to unwind with friends. Ben Craig, spokesperson for TV Licensing, London and the South East, said, “Watching catch up TV is really popular among students and we want to make sure students are aware of the change in law. From 1st September, everyone will need to be covered by a TV Licence to watch BBC TV programmes on demand – including catch up – on iPlayer. Finding homes for retired greyhounds Greyhound Homer Suffolk works hard to find loving, forever homes for retired greyhounds, and to promote greyhounds as rewarding and loving companions. It is a branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust with kennels at Capel St Mary, situated on the A12 between Colchester and Ipswich. Greyhounds available for rehoming have either retired from racing or didn’t make the grade. Their ethos is that the right home exists for each and every greyhound in their care. Volunteers often • Moody

go the extra mile to help greyhounds while they wait for their homes, taking them to training classes or for walks to acclimatise them to life outside of kennels. They promote greyhounds as pets at events ranging from the Suffolk Show and the Tendring Hundred show to smaller local shows. Many people who have never considered a greyhound as a pet are won over when meeting these gentle and loving dogs, they truly are their own best ambassadors. There are usually at least 12 greyhounds waiting for their homes, although it can be as many as 20. If you have ever thought about owning a greyhound or would like to learn more about them, please do get in touch, contact Avril on 01473 328154 or email adopt@greyhoundhomer.org.uk. Their website at www.greyhoundhomer.org.uk is constantly updated with details of the dogs currently available, along with and much more information including their homing policy and upcoming promotional and social events. Pet charity inundated with unwanted kittens

Blue Cross pet charity in Suffolk is urging owners to neuter their cats as they take in a record number of unwanted kittens so far this year. The charity in Wherstead, near Ipswich, is currently caring for 23 kittens, all in need of loving new homes. Already this year, the Blue Cross centre on Bourne Hill has helped 75 kittens find the second chance they deserve and the charity is reminding cat owners to neuter their pets as ‘kitten season’ gets in to full swing. Vera is just one of the 210 cats and kittens Blue Cross has cared for so far this year. The one-year-old tortoiseshell was discovered in someone’s back garden along with her five newborn kittens and the family were taken to Blue Cross. Vera and her kittens, named Stan, George, Bert, Cedric and Jack, are being cared for at the centre until they are ready to find new homes. If you can rehome a Blue Cross pet, please contact Blue Cross in Suffolk on 0300 777 1480, email suffolk@bluecross.org.uk or visit www.bluecross.org.uk.

Puppy Awareness Week Almost half of dog owners are spending more on vets’ fees than they had accounted for, as more than one in four people (27 percent) say that they suspect that their puppy came from a cruel puppy farm. The rising cost of owning a puppy comes as people opt to buy ‘mail order pups’ online or from newspaper ads, not realising that many pups being sold through these routes have been illegally smuggled from abroad. Ahead of its Puppy Awareness Week, taking place from 12th until 18th September, the Kennel Club is renewing its call for puppy buyers to do all they can to buy a puppy responsibly. Research carried out by the Kennel Club shows that a shocking one in ten people bought a ‘mail order pup’ from the internet online or from a newspaper advert, without seeing it first. This is a classic sign that the puppy has come from a puppy farm, as the breeder does not want buyers to see the state of the pup or the conditions it was raised in. Many of these pups will go on to develop diseases and conditions common in puppy farmed pups. Almost one fifth of pups purchased online without being seen by their new owner first ended up with serious gastrointestinal problems (19 percent), 15 percent with the potentially deadly parvovirus, and one in ten developed kennel cough. A further 15 percent of people still buy their puppies from pet shops, and almost one in five of these pups end up with parvovirus (18 percent). The Kennel Club is increasingly concerned about puppy farmers abroad supplying dealers with puppies to sell onto the public. Defra figures indicate that there was a 61 percent increase in pups coming into the UK from abroad in the first year since the controls were relaxed under changes to the Pet Travel Scheme in 2012, and that does not account for the undeclared dogs that are being smuggled illegally into the country. Many of the dogs smuggled into the UK are from breeds that are considered to be ‘trendy’ and fashionable, and as such are seeing their numbers shoot up astronomically, such as the French Bulldog and the Pug. This highlights the importance of puppy buyers doing their research into which breed might be right for their lifestyle before buying, in order to help ensure they can give a dog a good home and avoid expanding the market for unscrupulous breeders or puppy dealers to sell to. As part of its Puppy Awareness Week, the Kennel Club is reminding people to always see the puppy’s breeding environment and to see the pup interacting with its mother. The Kennel Club advises people wanting a pedigree dog to either go to a Kennel Club Breed Rescue organisation or buy a puppy from a Kennel Club Assured Breeder, who are inspected by the Kennel Club and have to follow rules for the responsible breeding of their pups. Our popular Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said, “Sadly it is all too easy for puppy buyers to be duped continue in 2016 at by irresponsible breeders, whose Foxhall Community Centre puppies end up with severe health (ex St Clements Sports & Social Club), and behavioural problems because Foxhall Rd, Ipswich IP3 8LS of the terrible start they have had in life. meet the breeder and the pup and ensure the breeder is doing the right things. Unless people insist on seeing mum and seeing the home environment, then unsuspecting puppy buyers will continue to buy puppies that will end up with health and behavioural problems that will cost them dearly, both financially and emotionally. It is quite likely that the pups they are buying will have been brought into the country illegally or raised on puppy farms in the UK.” The Puppy Awareness Week research found that more than a third of people do not see the pup interacting with its mum (36 percent), nearly two thirds (61 percent) do not see the pup’s breeding environment, almost three quarters (72 percent) do not get a contract of sale and more than two thirds (70 percent) do not receive health test certificates to show the parents have been health tested before being bred from. The research also shows that 12 percent still buy pets as presents and 7 percent as a spur of the moment decision, and one in five buy a puppy because of the way it looks. Puppy buyers are cautioned to do their research before they buy to ensure that the breed is the right fit for their lifestyle and that the breeder is responsible. SEPTEMBER:

9th month is really the 7th – and other useful facts! — with Sue Hall —

You may not feel like you have had one but this month signals the end of Summer and the beginning of Autumn. In the Southern Hemisphere, September 23rd is actually the beginning of Spring! Remember The Life of Brian, classic Monty Python film? There is a sketch in it with the repeated phrase, “What have the Romans ever done for us?” A great many things actually if you have seen the film but one thing that didn’t get mentioned was that they slotted in two more months to the calendar year! July named after Julius Caesar and August named after Augustus Caesar. This nudged the later months along by two and so September became the ninth instead of the seventh month. But what else does September signify? Let me share with you some interesting and/or notable events that have happened throughout the years during this particular month. And, it could be a much longer list as there were so many things that happened on all the days of the month but I just selected some of the highlights. 1st 1715 –The “Sun King” (King Louis XIV of France) died. He had ruled since the age of five and was succeeded by his 5-year-old great-grandson Louis XV. 1st 1939 - At 5.30 a.m., Hitler’s armies invaded Poland starting World War 2 in Europe. 2nd 1666 - The Great Fire of London began in a bakery in Pudding Lane near the Tower. Over the next three days more than 13,000 houses were destroyed, although only six lives were believed lost. 3rd 1939 - Great Britain and France declared war on Nazi Germany after its invasion of Poland two days earlier. 5th 1997 - Mother Teresa died in Calcutta at age 87, after a life of good works spent aiding the sick and poor in India through her Missionaries of Charity order. 11th 2001 - The worst terrorist attack in US history occurred as four large passenger jets were hijacked then crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York, killing nearly 2,752 people. The impact and subsequent fire caused both 110-story towers to collapse, and the death toll included hundreds of rescue workers and people employed in the towers. 14th 1714 - Composer George Frederick Handel finished Messiah after working on it nonstop for 23 days. 14th 1927 - In Nice, France, famed ballet dancer Isadora Duncan was killed in a freak accident as the long scarf she was wearing became caught in the moving wheel of the car in which she was riding, strangling her. 14th 1982 - Princess Grace of Monaco died following an accident in which her car plunged off a mountain road in Monte Carlo. Her daughter Stephanie,

also in the car, survived and was treated for shock and bruises. Princess Grace (Grace Kelly) was a Hollywood actress who met Prince Rainier III of Monaco during filming of the Hitchcock film To Catch a Thief. She then gave up a successful acting career and married him in 1956. 15th 1940 - The height of the Battle of Britain occurred as massive German air raids took place against London, Southampton, Bristol, Cardiff, Liverpool and Manchester. The British claimed 185 German planes were shot down. 15th 1940 - British mystery author Agatha Christie (1890-1976) was born in Torquay, England. She wrote nearly a hundred books including mysteries, dramas, poetry and non-fiction. 19th 1893 - New Zealand became the first country to grant women the right to vote. 28th 1066 - The Norman conquest of England began as Duke William of Normandy landed at Pevensey, Sussex. 28th 1978 - Pope John Paul I died after only 33 days in office. He was succeeded by John Paul II. 29th 1829 - Britain’s “bobbies” made their first public appearance. Greater London’s Metropolitan Police force was established by an act of Parliament at the request of Home Secretary, Sir Robert Peel, after whom they were nicknamed. The force later became known as Scotland Yard, the site of their first headquarters. 30th 1955 - Actor James Dean was killed in a car crash in California at age 24. Although he made just three major films, Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden and Giant, he remains one of the most influential actors. I can tell by the time I take the dogs out that the evenings are getting darker earlier and I know I am hoping the nice weather hasn’t gone for good just quite yet. If your children have gone back to school you may have some time on your hands during the day. If you are a grandparent, your help over the summer was appreciated but now you too may have spare time. Hot Tubs are homes ‘Must Have’ The British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association reveal the news that the market for hot tubs is booming. Results from their 2015 Wet Leisure Survey in conjunction with Golden Coast Limited report sales in the Spa category have far exceeded the six other wet leisure categories which are a 20% improvement on the 2014 figures. The trend seems to come from families wishing to stay at home and not travel abroad who can add luxury and potentially value to their homes with a hot tub purchase; as well as a focal point for entertaining with recognised and tangible therapeutic benefits. Hot tubs are increasingly becoming items of desire on consumers’ shopping lists, as recently evidenced by DIY chain retailers and holiday lodge operators. Reports show that the term “hot tub” is now one of the most searched for phrases on these sector’s websites. Modern hot tubs are high technology, sophisticated pieces of equipment providing luxury,

The Great British Shed The humble garden shed may hold the key to contentment. 95% of shed owners in the East of England say their shed makes them happy, according to the Waltons Great British Shed Survey. For ‘sheddies’ (people who love their shed), the shed is much more than a place to store gardening tools - it’s the ultimate retreat. In the East of England, over 54% of people surveyed say they love sheds so much they’d happily spend a country break staying in one, and 23% say they would even live in their shed. Shed owners in the East of England eagerly anticipate the time they spend in their shed: 32% say it’s better than going to the pub, 49% say it’s better than doing almost anything in the house, and 7% prefer ‘shed time’ to sex.

SECRET SHEDS

Be it a ‘she shed’ or ‘man cave’, the garden shed is a haven for many. 42% use their shed as a hideaway, with 14% seeking time away from partners and others using it as a secret hidey hole for chocolate, cigarettes, alcohol, and even love letters from exes.

ALL SHED CONS

Far from the damp draughty stereotype, the modern garden shed often has all the mod cons. Most sheddies surveyed have electricity in their shed, 19% have heating, and 28% have WiFi.

SANCTUARY

38% of sheddies in the East of England go to their shed to relax, with 20% playing music and 8% meditating. Other sheddies retreat to their garden hideaway for dinner, to watch a film, read, write, sleep, and even to enjoy a sauna.

SECOND SHED OWNERS

Shed owners in the East of England have more sheds per sheddie than anywhere else in the UK, with nearly one in ten owning at least four. Sheddies who took part in the survey say they need all these sheds to use as snooker rooms, art studios, animal enclosures, and more. Happiness is indeed, a garden shed.

therapeutic benefits and a great addition to any home. As more hot tub brands have come to the marketplace and the range of hot tubs available has grown, the entry level price has reduced, but the growth of the market has also provided much more consumer choice. An entry level self-contained or non-self-contained hot tub can be purchased for as little as £3,000. A hot tub is a high-ticket, luxury, discretionary item. They are also generally complicated pieces of electromechanical equipment which, once they are in place, are not easy to move again. It is, therefore, important that consumers buy from a reputable retailer who can help them through the entire buying process and who can offer comprehensive on-site warranty coverage. Once a purchaser has decided what kind of hot tub they would like and its best location, they should take some time to choose an experienced, reputable dealer to carry out a site survey. BISHTA offers an easy to use map search facility on their website (www.bishta.co.uk) to help put consumers in touch with companies in their area. BISHTA recommends that users should try before they buy! Most retailers encourage a test soak before purchase. Offering the best way to ensure a that when buying a hot tub it suits the users needs. When spending many thousands of pounds on any product it’s not sensible to buy without trying it out beforehand, and hot tubs are no different. Each one has its own unique feel. A wet-test is a chance to note the depth of the water, the seating capacity and location of seats, and the variety and power of the jets. Look for a hot tub with seats deep enough to cover the shoulders; others should be high enough to let the body cool down, stretch out and get comfortable. Check the power available to each jet in each seat, and how controllable that power is and for those with a particular medical condition, this gives users a chance to check how it feels and to see if the hot tub helps to ease them. BISHTA (British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association) has members that are part of the trade association for the UK and Irish spa and hot tub industry. Recognised by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) and the HPA (Health Protection Agency), BISHTA promotes safe hot tub standards and helps to put consumers in touch with reputable companies who work to a Code of Ethics and BISHTA Standards.

Top Tips for Autumnal Garden Maintenance Autumn is an exciting season for your garden and with a little simple upkeep, you can be sure to enjoy it long after the summer months have ended. It’s time for the fresh summer blooms to make way for crisp leaves, and pastel shades to be replaced by bursts of rich tones – from burnt oranges to tawny browns – creating a stunning display in your garden space. Not only is autumn a great time to rejuvenate your lawn from the summer, but it’s also a great time to plan ahead for the colder months by putting precautions in place to combat the horticultural headaches that can occur throughout a cold snap. You can even take it one step further and be a real gardening whizz by preparing for the spring by putting plant supports in place.

September at RSPB Flatford Wildlife Garden Well, the swifts are no longer wheeling overhead, the early morning sunlight has a slightly more mellow quality and the air has a fresher, cooler feel to it. Unmistakeably, the season is moving on. Flatford Wildlife Garden is looking rather shaggy round the edges – just as it should at this time of year. It can be tempting for us to

September to October is a crucial period for ensuring that your lawn is kept in great condition as it is a season renowned for incredibly unpredictable weather. Therefore, it is imperative to make sure that you don’t cut your lawn too short, as the inevitable onset of frost in the winter months will make your lawn a hazardous surface. It is also recommended to pick up any fallen leaves from the lawn, as if left, they could damage the grass beneath. Don’t throw away the dead leaves – collect them, put them in a perforated black bin bag and leave them to decompose as they make for great organic compost! It’s crucial that you trim any garden hedges during the autumn period to allow them to rejuvenate to ensure that they are in great shape to flourish in the spring/summer months. Once you’ve finished maintaining your hedge, use a shredder to reduce any trimmings into small and manageable pieces that can be easily disposed of. Bosch have many tools to make maintaining your garden easier from lawn mowers to leaf blowers and shedders, they have a piece machinery to make your life stress free. www.bosch-garden.com

look at this and rush to cut back all the summer’s spent growth in an attempt to restore tidiness and order. However, it’s important to consider that the needs of wildlife need to be balanced with aesthetic qualities, and to hold back a little, ensuring that there are seedheads aplenty left for the birds (teasels and sunflowers are especially appreciated), and adequate shelter throughout the colder times ahead. If you find it hard to restrain the secateurs, just keep in mind how beautiful frost-lined seedheads and stems are on a crisp and cold November morning! It’s fine to trim conifers and hedging towards the end of the month as the birds will no longer be raising young there. Anything with berries though, is a useful food source, so leave those for now. At Flatford, they will keep the lovely annual cosmos flowers going as long as possible by deadheading regularly. The bumblebees will thank us. At the end of the season the worker bees will die and only the queens will hibernate. When

they come out into the light of day again on one of the first warm spring days, they will need an energy boost before setting about finding a suitable nest site to settle in. They will have gone through the winter full of fertilised eggs, and they will need extra energy to produce these, so why not plan some support for them now, by planting early flowering spring flowers and bulbs? Hellebores are useful as they flower early, and over a long period. White dead nettles and pulmonarias (lungworts) are also very good. Crocus bulbs can also be planted. Crocus Tommasini flower early and are easy to naturalise. September is also a good time to think about dividing and moving herbaceous perennials. At the end of the month, the soil is still warm and it’s ideal for establishing new root growth, although repositioned plants will still need watering unless we have rainy weather. Do visit the garden for more information and ideas about what you can do to have a garden that’s great for people and also supports wildlife. The more building development we see, the greater the need for us to make our gardens effective for wildlife. For more details, please visit the website at www.rspb.org.uk/Flatford. The RSPB are also on the lookout for more volunteers at Flatford. They have roles in both the gardening and welcome teams available. Telephone 01206 391153, or email sharon.barker@rspb.org.uk for more details, or just call in at the garden to speak to them. They look forward to seeing you.

Two fly-tippers pay the price Suffolk Coastal is reminding residents and visitors of the need to ensure their household waste is disposed of properly after two residents were given Fixed Penalties for fly-tipping. One Rendlesham resident admitted to dumping waste in a layby in Bromeswell in May and a Saxmundham resident admitted to dumping waste outside the Household Waste Recycling Centre in Leiston whilst the site was closed, in June. Since May this year, local authorities have the powers to issue any person found responsible for illegally dumping rubbish with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £200 as an alternative to being prosecuted for the offence. If paid within ten days, the penalty is reduced to £120. Failure to comply with the notice within 14 days may result in prosecution proceedings, which in the event of a conviction by a Magistrates Court can result in a maximum fine of £50,000 and / or a prison sentence of six months being imposed, with Crown Courts able to impose even steeper penalties of up to five years imprisonment and an unlimited fine. Cllr Poulter, Cabinet Member for Green Environment, said, “We will have no hesitation in taking the appropriate level of action against anyone found responsible for despoiling our beautiful district.

“I would urge anyone tempted to be a bit lazy with their rubbish to do the responsible thing and make sure it is either properly sorted into the appropriate wheelie bin at home, or to take it to their nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre during opening hours, to avoid the risk of receiving a £200 Fixed Penalty Fine or being prosecuted.

allow them to take your waste.

“Whilst these two incidents were both at the relatively minor end of the scale, and the individuals concerned were therefore offered the opportunity to pay Fixed Penalty Notices as an alternative to being prosecuted, we will not hesitate to pursue through the courts any person found responsible for a more serious incident.

Refuse – Any unsolicited offers to have any rubbish taken away. Always carry out your own research and choose who you wish to approach. Ask questions - Always ask what exactly is going to happen to your rubbish and seek evidence that it is going to be disposed of appropriately. A legitimate, professional waste carrier who wants your business should not object to being asked reasonable questions.

“Fly-tipping is a burden on council taxpayers and local landowners, leaving us with hefty bills to clear up and despoiling our beautiful county. Of course, we have to catch those responsible first, so we urge all members of the community to be vigilant and report anyone seen dumping rubbish illegally.

Paperwork - Make sure you get a proper receipt containing the written information for your waste. This should include what has been removed and where it will be going. Make sure the Company or tradesman’s details are included.

“I would also urge anyone who arranges for any waste to be taken away from their home by anyone other than the Council’s service partner Suffolk Coastal Norse (formerly Suffolk Coastal Services) to remember the Scrap Code, to avoid being held responsible should their waste end up fly-tipped.”

If you see someone fly-tipping report it by calling Suffolk Coastal on 01394 444000 or email scs@ncsgrp.co.uk A wide range of items can be taken for recycling and disposal free of charge at any of SCC’s Household Waste Recycling Centres. New opening hours are in effect, with longer opening hours on Thursday evenings, Sundays, and Bank Holidays, whilst the sites are closed on Wednesdays. Suspect - Beware of rogue waste carriers – reputable companies do not usually make direct approaches. If in any doubt as to whether someone is a legitimate waste carrier, do not

Get Creative with Ornamental Grasses Add striking texture, character and form to your garden this month with the ‘Plant of the Moment’ – ornamental grass. From dainty Blue Fescue Grass to majestic Miscanthus, ornamental grasses provide a quality unmatched by many other hardy perennials. Their presence develops through the seasons as bright and colourful foliage is joined by graceful swaying flower heads that last well into winter.

Check - Ask for their waste carrier registration details. You can verify them by visiting the online register at https://environment.data.gov.uk/publicregister/view/search-waste-carriers-brokers or by calling 03708 506 506. Note down the registration number of the vehicle used to take your waste away.

In large borders grasses can be planted in bold groups or striking drifts, but many varieties perform well in large patio pots, positioned where their individual shape and arching form can be fully appreciated. Popular grasses for pots include compact Blue Fescue Grass and Slender Sweet Flag ‘Ogon’, or taller varieties of Miscanthus such as the Zebra Grass (Miscanthus ‘Zebrinus’). Taller grasses also add movement

to otherwise static displays, catching a breeze to add interest and catch the eye. Growing to around two metres in height, the bold form of Golden Oats (Stipa gigantea) is a real showstopper! Or if space allows try planting a statuesque clump of Pampas Grass, and enjoy their feathery plumes right into winter. Ornamental grasses offer great value, and these popular Plants of the Moment produce long-lasting displays in any garden. Large individuals have a real presence, taking pride of place in beds and borders, while colourful planting combinations can be created with flowering perennials like Black-eyed

Susan, Coneflowers and Ice Plants. Top Tips For Planning And Planting • Be generous and plant grasses in drifts or bold groups rather than as lonely individuals. • Grasses grow well in patio pots, but make sure tall varieties are planted in large, heavy pots to prevent them blowing over in strong winds. • Line terracotta pots with plastic from old compost bags to help conserve moisture. • The tops of some perennial, like miscanthus, die over winter. Promptly cut away all old growth to avoid damaging new shoots that start emerging in early spring. www.the-hta.org.uk

Hearing Specialists Nominated for Top Award Over 20,000 people in the Suffolk Coastal district experience hearing loss, but thanks to one local company which has just been nominated for a top award, help is close at hand. The Hearing Care Centre, which has centres located in Aldeburgh, Felixstowe, Framlingham, Halesworth, Southwold and Woodbridge, has been chosen as a finalist in the Suffolk Coastal Business Awards for their customerfocused approach. Led by senior audiologist Karen Finch, the company offers a variety of hearing related services including hearing assessments, fitting of the latest hearing aid technology, earwax removal, noise protection and tinnitus management. To be nominated as a finalist in the ‘Customer Focus’ category The Hearing Care Centre had to show evidence of a customerfocused culture with a consistent

commitment to customer service excellence, backed up with customer testimonials and reviews. Karen was delighted to hear the news of been selected in the final three. “I was thrilled to learn of our nomination as this is the first time we have entered these awards. We have very strong representation across the Suffolk Coastal district, meaning that patients don’t have to travel very far to access our services. “No matter who our patients are, we aim to offer exemplary customer service and help change lives by enabling them to hear better,” said Karen. The three other finalists in the Customer Focus category are

Framlingham Medical Practice, Secret Escapes and Heritage Care at Home. The Suffolk Coastal Business Awards recognise the work or

organisations and individuals in the district over the past 18 months. Winners will be announced at a glitzy ceremony at Kesgrave Hall, in Ipswich on September 15th.

Give your child the best start possible Children smile up to 400 times a day - and their smiles are powerful! A study called the Smile Back Project by the University of Cambridge revealed that adults smile 13 per cent more frequently when with children than when in the presence of adults or being alone. It also shows how the condition of our teeth can make a big difference to how often we smile. The study found a significant correlation between healthy teeth and higher intensity of smiling; study participants who reported better oral health also reported higher levels of selfesteem and life satisfaction.

The oral health message we teach our patients at Harbour Dental Care in Ipswich is:

A smile is one of the most powerful things in the world. It is universally understood and contagious - a smile from one person generates the smile of another, revealed the research.

• Spit don’t rinse after brushing (as rinsing washes away the fluoride)

An important part of looking after our mouths is the bit we do at home. Please remember, teeth will last a lifetime if looked after properly, so teaching children the right brushing techniques is vital.

• Visit your dentist regularly so that your teeth remain healthy and strong for life

• Brush twice a day for 2 minutes using a fluoride toothpaste* • Only use a pea-sized blob of toothpaste on your brush

• Make sure you watch children brush their teeth to check they are doing it right • Change your toothbrush every 3 months

• Cut down on the amount of sugar and sugary drinks you consume

* Please check that your child’s toothpaste contains the right amount of fluoride – ages 0-2 1000ppm of fluoride and 3+ 1450ppm. Regular dental and hygiene visits will help ensure you and your children’s smiles stay healthy for life, so don’t put off your next appointment, call Harbour Dental Care in Ipswich today to book. Our door is always open to new patients and we look forward to meeting you and your family soon.

Acupuncture: over 2,000 years of use Acupuncture regulates the flow of qi around the body through pathways called meridians. In recent years medical scientists have discovered myofascil pathways that follow the meridians recorded by the early acupuncturists, and the concept of qi itself may overlap with developing knowledge of how cells in the body communicate. Acupuncture is considered to be beneficial for a wide range of conditions and, because it is designed to affect your whole body in a natural way with no side effects, it is the perfect treatment for many different aliments. At Ipswich Acupuncture Clinic they have a wealth of knowledge and are members of the British Acupuncture Council and practice acupuncture based on Chinese medicine principles that have been researched and refined for over 2,000 years. Ipswich Acupuncture Clinic have successfully treated patients for all kinds of pain management - pain is a manifestation of the imbalances within our body or it could be caused by the superficial imbalance in the muscle. Acupuncture is a very effective for treating muscle pain as well as the other pain. Acupuncture is also very beneficial in the treatment of stress management, including anxiety, depression and insomnia, and digestive disorders like constipation, gastritis, acid reflux and bladder problems. NICE – the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommends acupuncture for the treatment of headaches and migraines. Acupuncture can be used for all manner of medical conditions from respiratory disorder including allergies, hay fever and asthma to menopause symptoms, painful periods and even help with fertility. In fact, because an acupuncture treatment is designed to treat the whole body and not just your symptoms, many patients notice other niggling problems they may have are also resolved during a course of treatment.

• Ipswich Acupuncture Clinic can be found at 166 Ranelagh Road, Ipswich and is open Monday to Friday from 8am until 7pm and from 8am until 5pm on Saturdays. For more information about how acupuncture can help you or to book an appointment telephone Charles Chan MBAcC BSc (Hons) on 07428 446039.

Though we are at the height of late summer, it’s time for me to begin to anticipate the autumn mindfulness courses. As usual we have a course running from Framfield House Medical Centre, Woodbridge - and we are excitedly anticipating a course in Ipswich at the newly created Wellbeing centre “Quay Place” at the re-requisitioned St Mary’s Church. As a chartered counselling psychologist I work with a mindfulnessinformed approach to psychotherapy called “acceptance and commitment therapy”, ACT. It is an extraordinarily effective approach across a wide range of mental health conditions. One of its great strengths is that it doesn’t target symptom reduction as its measure for success; instead it focuses upon encouraging a person’s willingness to re-engage in creating a life of value meaning and purpose. Symptom reduction often is just a fortunate side-effect of getting life going again! As a mindfulness teacher, however, in my eight week training courses I get to work with a wide range of people - some of whom are struggling with long-term chronic conditions such as stress, depression and anxiety and there are others, who are already well engaged and highly functioning, but are seeking to up their game and optimise their potential. Mindfulness training groups are not psychotherapy groups, they are psycho-educational. And it’s about installing good habits!

Thinking of mindfulness practice as “mental hygiene” - then two cleans a day will in all likelihood be very helpful if we have picked up the mental equivalent of tooth decay - a mental health condition, but perhaps even more important is the potential of regular daily practice for promoting and maintaining a healthy mental health condition. So I do get to work with symptom reduction - in an upstream sort of way - by reducing the likelihood of them happening in the first place! The Woodbridge course runs of Tuesday evenings from 5.30pm until 7.30pm, staring 20th September. I should know more about the Ipswich course for the next edition. Do get in touch for more info: whether for the courses, or the various one to one options. Enjoy the rest of the summer

As kids, the vast majority of us (though not all, sadly, as I discovered whilst working in the prison sector) had “dental hygiene” installed in our habitual repertoire between the ages of two and three. Our caring parents trained us in the before you go to bed and when you get up in the morning habit.

At Ipswich Acupuncture Clinic they also offer cupping as well as acupuncture. This treatment was used by many swimmers at the Rio Olympics and can improve the circulation of the muscle as well as release the muscle pain.

On the road with your dog National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) is reminding people of their responsibilities when it comes to dog travel following a survey of owners. One of the biggest reminders is about leaving dogs in hot cars. At 22 degrees outside, a car interior can reach 47 degrees within an hour. An open window or parking in shade are not reliable ways to keeping your dog cool and comfortable. Under the Animal Welfare Act owners have a duty of care towards their animals to protect them and prevent suffering which includes not exposing them to extremes of temperature. If a dog is left in a car on a warm day and suffers harm, owners could be at risk of prosecution. The second reminder is around keeping dogs safe while travelling. NAWT found that one in five dogs would be unprotected in the event of a car accident because the animal is not restrained. The Highway Code asks drivers to ensure a dog is kept secure with a crate, guard or harness so as not to cause a distraction to the driver and to protect them and their animal if there is an emergency stop. Since around 40% of respondents take one or more dogs in the car with them every day, that’s a high number of people at risk of flouting regulations. Many car insurance policies require owners to follow Highway Code guidance on restraining their dogs but with only 7% of those surveyed stating they know

what their insurance says, it would be worthwhile reading your insurance documentation before you travel. Owners should also check how emergency breakdown cover affects travel with dogs too. While 88% of respondents have such cover, in the event of a breakdown many emergency recovery companies leave it up to the discretion of their employees to decide how your dog can travel in the event of a recovery. This means your dog may have to remain in your vehicle on the recovery truck or if being towed, or worse still, your dog could be refused outright. Commenting on the findings NAWT CEO Clare Williams said, “We wanted to warn people about the potential road blocks in their way with regard to their next trip. Most of us regard our pets as family members so be prepared for any unwelcome surprises by checking your legal responsibilities, your insurance and make sure your dog is secure while travelling.”

Used car of the month: BMW 1 Series

Head of Valuation Services at My Car Check, Gavin Amos, said, “The BMW 1 Series has been in the market place for some time now and as such they’re available to suit almost any budget. The German build quality, the ultimate driving machine reputation and BMW’s general badge appeal make them a popular used choice. Our picks are the diesel variants, which offer more than enough power for most drivers. The star of the show as a used car is the 123d but there’s far more choice of 118d and 120d. One question to ask concerns the tyres as many of those which left the factory with run flats have now regular tyres due to the cost of like-for-like replacements. Full service history adds real value and, as always, conduct a provenance check before you buy for complete peace of mind.” As to market trends, Amos said, “Dealers report that used car enquiry levels are slightly down, but that is entirely to be expected at this time of year. People are either on holiday or watching their spending because they’ve been on holiday. Both buyers and sellers are starting to look to the plate change in September to generate an influx of new stock. In the meantime, most values are holding firm.”

Used bike of the month: Kawasaki Z1000SX

On the motorbike, scooter and moped sector, My Car Check’s Rob Hobson said, “Our used bike of the month is the Kawasaki Z1000SX, which has all the attributes for great road motorcycling. It can be loaded up for a touring holiday or taken out for a quick blast – comfy but with enough sports focus to keep it exciting. The SX has performed well in terms of new sales, so there are usually quite a few around in the used market. Keep an eye out for low mileage examples, which can be something of a bargain.” As to market trends, Hobson said, “Wet weather is never a great stimulus for the two wheel market. That, combined with the uncertainty that Brexit has stirred through the country, hasn’t done much for what is for many a luxury purchase. Overall, the market is fairly stable but a prolonged dry period would be most welcome.” My Car Check’s valuation experts reveal significant trends in the UK used vehicle market and choose a car and bike of the month. Survey reveals male and female perspectives on car buying A survey of over 500 MyCarCheck.com customers (355 men and 190 women) in July 2016 has revealed some intriguing differences in male and female perspectives on motoring. Q1. When buying a car, what is most important to you? Female: Sale price, followed by fuel efficiency Male: Sale price, followed by look and style

Q2. When buying a vehicle, which step are you least comfortable with? Female: Physically inspecting the vehicle Male: Negotiating the price

Q3. How would you rate your driving ability?

47.8% of female respondents described themselves as “good” compared to 60.7% of male respondents. 47.8% of women said they were “competent” compared to 36.1% of men.

Q4. Of all driving situations, which do you dislike most?

The top answer for both men and women was one way systems (an almost identical 29.7% for women and 29.6% men), followed by roundabouts.

Driverless Car Trials

Head of My Car Check, Roger Powell, said, “For the vast majority, price is always the most important consideration; people set a budget and then see what they can get for the money. The secondary driver is where we see clear differences along gender lines. Women are most concerned with fuel efficiency, a significant ongoing cost of ownership, while men are more concerned with image, the ‘what will my mates think?’ factor. “On the scariest aspect of car buying, again, there was a clear difference according to gender. Women worried most about inspecting the vehicle, while men worried most about the price negotiation. The fact is the average buyer, male or female, won’t buy a car very often and won’t have great technical knowledge. In those circumstances, the sums involved can make the process stressful, and with good reason too: almost half of all used vehicles searched on MyCarCheck.com have a warning against them. “The responses to the question on driving ability reveal some classic male bravado. Women are happy to be described as ‘competent’ – having the necessary ability – whereas men think ‘good’ sounds much better. “The final question, on driving situations, unites the sexes. All drivers get stressed out by one way systems and roundabouts!” With information from the police, DVLA, insurers and finance houses, My Car Check holds comprehensive data on every vehicle on UK roads – things that buyers should be aware of before making an offer. CDL Vehicle Information Services, which owns My Car Check, performs over a million look-ups a day for companies including AutoExpress, CompareTheMarket, Go-Compare, Moneysupermarket, Swiftcover, Tesco and WhatCar?

Members of the public can now register to take part in the UK’s first public driverless vehicle trials The trials, which will take place in the Royal Borough of Greenwich later this year, are part of the GATEway (Greenwich Automated Transport Environment) project. RSA is a GATEway partner. The trials will seek to understand how a range of different user groups feel about the use of fully automated vehicles. Those chosen to be part of the trials will be given the chance to ride in a driverless vehicle and asked to provide their views about the experience. Some participants may also be invited to share their views in interviews before and after using a vehicle. Business Secretary Sajid Javid commented, “Making driverless cars a reality is going to revolutionise our roads and travel, making journeys safer, faster, and more environmentally-friendly. Very few countries can match our engineering excellence in the automotive sector or our record on innovative research, and this announcement shows we are already becoming one of the world’s leading centres for driverless cars technology.” • For more information or to register your interest in participating in workshops or trials visit: https://www.gateway-project.org.uk/ get-involved/. Survey proves road surface at all-time low A new statistical analysis of the RAC’s pothole-related call-outs over the last 10 years provides strong evidence that the quality of Britain’s roads has deteriorated substantially over time. The study, which compared the 2006 to 2016 in the proportion of percentage share of the RAC’s vehicle breakdowns where poor pothole-related breakdowns to all road surfaces were likely to be a other types of call-out alongside contributory factor. historic rainfall and frost data, In the 12 months ending in June revealed a 125% increase from 2006, pothole-related breakdowns, such as damaged shock absorbers, broken suspension springs and distorted wheels, represented an average of 0.4% of all RAC call-outs. In stark contrast, however, at the end of the 12 months to June 2016 this percentage had risen to 0.9%.

The RAC pothole analysis also shows a striking rise in pothole call-outs in the two years from 2007 to 2009 when the RAC’s share of those breakdowns shot up from 0.5% to 1.1% – a 120% rise. A quarterly high figure of 1.6% was recorded at the end of March 2009 – a percentage not seen again until the first two quarters of 2013 which was no doubt attributable to the snowy winter. This meant that of the RAC’s 753,000 breakdowns that quarter, a worrying 12,000 were pothole-related. Sadly, since 2013 the quarterly percentage of pothole-related breakdowns has not fallen below the 1% level when averaged over the previous 12 months. RAC chief engineer David Bizley said, “Our analysis paints a very disappointing picture which unequivocally confirms what most road users already know, which is that the condition of our local roads has deteriorated drastically in the last decade. This analysis suggests that the quality of the UK’s roads suffered a steady decline from the start of 2007 through to the end of 2009, presumably due to lack of investment in maintenance and resurfacing during worsening economic times. Since then, injections of short-term funding have addressed the immediate aftermath of periods of extreme weather but have not been sufficient to tackle the underlying problem. “While currently only 0.9% of the RAC’s 2.4m breakdowns in the 12 months to the end of June 2016 were of a type typically caused by potholes, there has been little underlying change since 2008. Although 0.9% seems low as a percentage of all breakdowns, the growth in this type of call-out is indisputable. With few exceptions, it’s the vehicle owner who picks up the bill for fixing the damage adding up to millions of pounds every year. “Whilst it’s good news that the share of pothole-related breakdowns for the second quarter of 2016 does show a 40% reduction compared with the second quarter of 2015 (1.5% to 0.9%) we need to see further reductions before we can be confident that we really are improving the underlying quality of roads, and not just repairing

damage from the most recent adverse weather. “The Government has taken bold steps in recent times to ensure that the strategic road network in England (major A roads and motorways) is fit for purpose and capable of supporting economic growth. The Government has a Road Investment Strategy and has announced plans to create a Roads Fund by ring-fencing vehicle excise duty to fund future development and maintenance of major roads. However, the majority of the damage our members have suffered has been when using local roads. “It is clear that the effects of insufficient investment over much of the last decade are going to take some considerable time to rectify.

Most journeys start or finish on local roads even if the bulk of the mileage is on the strategic road network, or by rail, sea or air. Without local roads that are fit for purpose, the benefits of the Government’s bold investment in national transport infrastructure may never be fully realised. “Bold and imaginative action is now required to address the underlying deficiencies in local roads. Existing funding arrangements are complex with central and local government sharing the cost. Whilst £6 billion has been allocated by the Department for Transport for the period 2015-2020 for local road maintenance and development, and further funding is available through the Local Growth Fund, the RAC would like to see local roads given the same priority and treated as a strategic asset. “With a new Prime Minister and a Secretary of State for Transport now in place it seems like the perfect time for them to demonstrate to motorists that they understand road users’ concerns and transport spending priorities.”

No drop in fuel prices

There’s still no sign of fuel supply chain passing on reduced oil prices and published wholesale falls to UK motorists since Brexit. Since the EU Referendum FairFuelUK estimates that over £400m has been held back by unprincipled fuel suppliers out of consumer spending and the consequential benefit to the economy. Howard Cox, founder of the FairFuelUK Campaign and Secretariat to the APPG on FairFuel said, “Our campaign supporters from UK motorists, hauliers and small businesses across the UK are incensed that in the weeks since the EU Referendum, significant falls in fuel wholesale prices have been ignored by retailers. We are told by some garage owners that they should not be blamed, as they are not getting these published wholesale numbers and are being overcharged by as much as six pence per litre. So who is fleecing the motorist? What is the truth? It really is time for the Government to investigate the opaque pricing process at the pumps.” Quentin Willson, Motoring Journalist and Lead Campaigner for FairFuelUK said, “Petrol margins at the pumps have nearly doubled since Brexit with diesel up by 50%. Motorists blame retailers but there is something more sinister as it seems wholesalers are not passing on these welcome falls in oil to retailers. The whole fuel supply chain cartel seems to be colluding behind a smokescreen of post Brexit uncertainty. The Government must act now to stop this deception.” www.fairfueluk.com
