Fizzwig Designs, the company that publishes Ipswich24 magazine have won a National award that recognizes businesses that employ apprentices, picking up the Silver award at the Apprenticeships 4 England Employer Awards 2016 held at Emirates Stadium in London.

The company were nominated for the award in the small business category by their training provider, WS Training, who where impressed by the hard work and support that Fizzwig Designs offers their apprentices.

“We were over the moon to be nominated for this award, so to find out that we were a winner is just incredible” says Wendy Cook, one of the partners at Fizzwig Designs.

Funding boost Claydon Business Park for Ipswich park Murray Park Friends Group in Ipswich has secured a £50,000 grant from Biffa Award, a multi-million pound fund that helps to build communities and transform lives through awarding grants to community and environmental projects across the UK, as part of the Landfill Communities Fund.

The project, which was awarded funding under Biffa Award’s Recreation theme, will create a tennis court and a multi-use games area (MUGA) for community groups, sports teams and schools to use.

Murray Park currently has six derelict tennis courts and one basketball court. These were built over a set of air raid shelters and in recent years subsidence has caused the facility to be unusable and closed to the public for more than two years with no viable plans for repair. The project will create a tennis court and MUGA that could also be used as a second court. The project also includes the removal and landscaping of the remaining courts to improve the overall area.

Glen Thimblethorpe, Chair of the Friends of Murray Park, said, “This will create a valuable facility for the community to enjoy. Leisure users will also be able to enjoy an attractive and pleasant green space, as the old derelict tennis courts will be removed and a landscaped nature area will be created.

This has been achieved with many years of dedicated work by the Friends and Ipswich Borough Council and would not have been possible without the funding by Biffa Award, the South East Area Committee and Section 106 planning funds.”

Councillor Philip Smart, Ipswich Borough Council’s parks portfolio-holder, said, “This is excellent news and we are grateful for Biffa Award’s support.

This will help us to enhance Murray Park, with more facilities to attract visitors. It is an important open space in east Ipswich and we are working closely with the Friends of Murray Park to improve it for the community.”

Gillian French, Biffa Award, said, “The Murray Park Friends Group has a clear ambition for the future of their local park. This project is an excellent example of how the Landfill Communities Fund can help improve local spaces for the community. We wish them every success.”

Countdown to Suffolk Show

With just few weeks to go until the Suffolk Show opens its gates to visitors, organisers are gearing up for another spectacular year at the most hotly-anticipated event in the county’s calendar.

This year’s Show, which is now in its 176th year, takes place on Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd June at Trinity Park in Ipswich. As Suffolk’s largest two-day visitor experience, the Show is a unique celebration of everything that makes the county great and showcases the best of Suffolk’s food and drink and agricultural heritage, coupled with being a great day out for families.

Show organisers, the Suffolk Agricultural Association (SAA), have a number of exciting new features in the pipeline for 2016 which will be part of an action packed programme across the two-

show jumping, the traditional livestock competitions will allow show goers to see some of the county’s best rare breeds – including Red Poll Cattle, Suffolk Sheep and Suffolk Punch Horses – and hundreds of other pigs, cattle, horses, rabbits and goats, up close.

Popular attractions such as the Sports Village will be returning to the Suffolk Show for 2016, where visitors of all ages have chance to try over 50 different sports for free. Attendees will have the opportunity to admire vintage tractors, have a go on old fashioned fairground rides and enjoy an unrivalled shopping experience which can’t be found on the high street.

The many animal attractions are also set to draw in the crowds this year. As well as international

Springtime: A Hectic time on the farm April is nearly upon us and life on the farm is getting quite hectic. If you haven’t had a chance to come and meet the lambs and piglets you have another fantastic opportunity over the Easter weekend, as the Easter Speggtacular returns on the 25th to the 28th of March.

The new lambs love to sit on your lap and if you are very lucky you may even see more being born. You can also meet the bunnies in the bunny barn, and see all the other animals that always look forward to meeting someone who’ll feed them. With entry prices at £7 for adults, £6 for concessions, £3 for children (aged 4-16) and free entry for under fours, it would be difficult to find a more diverting and better value attraction in Suffolk. goes from Lowestoft to Felixstowe, but will be at a rather more sedate pace and spread over five days. The Mini Challenge consists of three walks of around nine miles each: Oulton Broad to Beccles, the ‘Trimley Loop’ and a walk ending with refreshments at the National Trust’s Sutton Hoo, near Woodbridge.

The 2016 Suffolk Walking Festival kicks off on Saturday, 14th May and continues for three weeks until Sunday, 5th June.

The varied programme of 77 themed walks across the county range in length from a gentle stroll of one mile, to a challenging 60 miles in 24 hours and will take place along Suffolk’s glorious coast, through scenic, gently undulating countryside and around our medieval towns and villages.

The annual walking festival is a partnership project supported by all of Suffolk’s local authorities and is spearheaded by the Discover Suffolk project at Suffolk County Council. This year’s festival launch, which is sponsored by Suffolk Coastal District Council, takes place at RSPB Minsmere on the Suffolk coast. The event will also mark the launch of Suffolk’s Year of Walking, which starts in May 2016 and ends in May 2017.

“The Year of Walking will be celebrating two of my very favourite things: walking and Suffolk” says Lesley Dolphin from BBC Radio Suffolk and patron of the festival. “The aim is to inspire people to build more walking into their everyday lives and to discover what fun it is!”

“We are delighted that this year’s Walking Festival marks the beginning of Suffolk’s Year of Walking,” adds Cllr Goldson, cabinet member for health at Suffolk County Council. “The purpose of the initiative is to celebrate walking in the county, promote walking events and encourage new walking opportunities. The Festival does a wonderful job of demonstrating how easy and inclusive walking is, and what a fantastic county Suffolk is to walk in. It is making a very positive contribution to our ambition of becoming the most active county in England.”

Other walks include two stress-relieving mindfulness walks; a ‘prambling’ walk for parents with prams; photography, birdwatching and Pilates walks; a gentle stroll for sufferers of dementia and their carers, a walk which includes views of early marsh orchids, a speed-dating ramble and the ever-popular ‘Horrible History For Families’ in Ipswich.

Some include a cream tea or other refreshments and all are an informal and sociable way to explore the county, meet like-minded people and to indulge in a leisure activity which benefits both body and soul.

There are three lots of challenge walks planned, which have been sponsored by the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The Classic Challenge, a firm favourite among regular festival goers, is made up of five walks of between 11 and 14 miles each. As with The Mega Challenge, the route

Town Concert

A Town Concert of East Anglian Traditional Music by Katie and John Howson will be at the Museum Street Methodist Church on Thursday 14th April from 1pm to 1.50pm.

Katie and John Howson have been involved with traditional folk music for over 30 years, and in particular have championed the music of East Anglia. The importance of their work was recognised when they were awarded the Gold Badge from the English Folk Dance and Song Society in 2010. This multimedia presentation includes live music and stories about the ‘old boys’ (and the occasional ‘old girl’!) from whom John and Katie learned so much.

Tea and biscuits are available. The kettle will be on the hob at 12.30pm.

Although admission is free, a retiring collection of £3.00 will be appreciated.

Inspiration for the community Wickham Market are working hard to bring an empty store in the village back to life and are now looking for businesses to get involved in the enterprise.

The old Co-op shop has stood empty on the High Street for a number of years and now, with significant support from East of England Co-op.

The village hope to create an emporium store in part of the building to encourage start up and existing businesses to grow into the community.

Wickham Market’s Town Team have set up a Community Interest Company called Inspirations which will lease part of the old shop to provide space and recruit small retailers and new start-ups to provide a range of goods to attract people to the village centre. It will be run as a Social Enterprise and engage with the local community by selling shares and returning profits to community projects.

The shop will be owned by the community with all profits generated, going back into the community. The company has now successfully raised £12,000 in grants and donations, including £5,000 from Suffolk Coastal District Council and £1,000 donated by Cllr Mark Amoss through his Enabling Communities Budget. The company have also raised £15,000 through shares bought by the community.

Inspirations are now looking for support from volunteers and businesses who may be interested in joining the venture.

Colin Owens, Town Team Chairman, said, “We’re very excited that the shop will soon become a reality.

“Not only will the new shop encourage people into the centre, it will bring back the social element lost when the old site closed.

“We are looking for a balance of existing retailers and new starts. If anyone is interested in joining us, mentoring is available if you feel some extra support will benefit you and your business.”

Orwell Lady sets sail for another season

From Easter until September, the Orwell Lady be cruising up and down the beautiful and historic River Orwell, offering sightseers a choice of trips and experiences whilst taking in the wildlife and beautiful wooded stretches of the river and points of local interest such as Freston Tower, Pin Mill and the UK’s largest container port at Felixstowe.

The 2016 season starts on Easter Saturday (26th March) with a midday one hour return cruise from Orwell Quay in Ipswich to the Orwell Bridge. This cruise passes through the locks, past Ipswich’s historic wet dock and under the Orwell Bridge (with a chance to see the nesting Peregrine falcons). The Lions Club of Ipswich will again be hosting their annual Art Show at the beautiful Tithe Barn in Sproughton, near Ipswich this May and the club is now taking entries from local artists who wish to exhibit their work at the event.

Artists can show up to four pieces of their work, which must be ready to hang. The Lions Club take a small commission from any pieces that are sold over the weekend, which will go towards the Lion President’s Charity Appeal. This year the Club are supporting the East Suffolk Prostate Cancer Support Group.

So whatever medium you use to create your artwork, you will be welcomed to exhibit your pieces.

The Show opens on Friday 27th May with a special Cheese and Wine Preview Evening.

Work to begin on new Felixstowe Events Area

An exciting new events area is soon to be created in a prime location on Felixstowe’s seafront.

At a Cabinet meeting in March, it was agreed that the work to Felixstowe’s former boating lake will be completed by Kier Construction Ltd. The work to create an outdoor events area at the yacht pond will begin in April 2016 and is due to be completed during the summer.

The new area will feature a grassed open space and hard standing car park and will serve as a multi-use events space which will function as a car park and picnic area when not required for events.

It is anticipated that the events area could attract fairs, markets and exhibitions to support the local Felixstowe economy.

Cllr TJ Haworth-Culf, cabinet member for Customers, Communities and Leisure, said, “This is a prime location of Felixstowe’s seafront and it’s a shame that the area has been left vacant for this length of time.

“I’m pleased that the works will soon bring this site in line with a number of newly completed projects in Felixstowe and will further help to boost tourism in the town.

“We hope the space will be an attractive and flexible area, suitable for a range of different events and encourage more events to take place on the seafront.”

A Felixstowe based company is embarking on a Fundraising Rally this Spring to help raise much needed funds for charity, Help For Heroes.

Aidan Horne of A.D. Horne & Son is taking part in the annual Ipswich to Felixstowe Historic Vehicle Run on Sunday 1st May by entering five of the company’s own Historic cars.

“We are hoping to raise as much money as we can for Help For Heroes, and to help promote local businesses at the same time.” Says Aidan, “We would like to invite businesses to ‘buy’ some space on our vehicles, advertising their own company on one of our cars. All that we ask for is a donation to the charity of just £20 and in return they will get their name on display to the thousands of people that attend the Rally” The Ipswich to Felixstowe Vehicle run starts in Christchurch Park in Ipswich where visitors will be able to have a good look around the many cars, vans and commercial vehicles taking part. The vehicles then make their way to Felixstowe, gathering on the prom to form a fantastic display.

“Once we reach the prom at Felixstowe we will have collecting buckets for passers by to drop their loose change into.” Continued Aidan, “Plus, anyone wishing to donate to Help For Heroes will get the chance to sign the roof of our classic cars. Spring-time Babies at Owl Sanctuary Spring has sprung and, at the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary, that means babies are making an appearance!

Everyone loves a fluffy baby owl and during the month of April, several of the sanctuary’s resident owls will become proud parents!

Great Horned Owls, Ural Owls and Malaysian Wood Owls will all be raising broods and eagle eyed visitors may well be able to spot a few of the new arrivals.

Baby owls eat voraciously and grow rapidly! Regular visitors will be amazed at how swiftly tiny, cute bundles will evolve into slightly bemused looking adults!

By the end of September, some of this new generation could be flying to the fist.

Whilst “baby spotting”, visitors can also enjoy three spectacular flying displays every day, showcasing a diversity of owls and other birds of prey. The first show of the day will feature Native Birds, the second American Birds and the third, Wings of the World.

A BSL signing interpreter will be in attendance on specified dates.

The pretty Woodland Walk also offers a simple trail through wild flowers, bug hotels, ladybird houses and wildlife ponds to the red squirrels and wheelchair accessible bird hide.

Meerkat Kastle is also located in the woodland and two feeding sessions daily offer an interesting commentary on these entertaining creatures.

The sanctuary also includes a relaxing sensory garden with tactile seating, herb garden, water feature and bee and butterfly friendly borders.

The new children’s play area offers custom built wheelchair accessible equipment and tumble safe surface.

There is plenty of space throughout the site for picnics and wheelchair friendly tables are provided.

The site is buggy and wheelchair friendly with level tarmac paths throughout and many of the aviaries feature Braille information boards.

A Book Festival with a Difference comes to Ipswich!

East Anglia’s newest book festival BooksEast opens on the 9th of May and runs until the 15th in Ipswich, bringing a range of celebrated authors to Suffolk’s county town for a festival with a difference.

Ipswich Corn Exchange, Film Theatre, Town Hall and its gallery spaces and café will be buzzing as a wide range of writers descend on the town to inspire and delight audiences of all ages from four to 104.

Jason Hazeley and Joel Morris, authors of the massively popular Ladybird Books for Grown Ups series will be in conversation with comedian Katy Brand; pro cyclist David Millar will talk about his book The Racer: Life on the Road as a Pro Cyclist in conversation with BBC Radio Suffolk’s Jon Wright; world famous explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes will be in conversation his long-time with collaborator Anton Bowring in Life at the Limits; David Cavanagh will discuss his biography Good Night and Good Riddance: How 35 Years

Gerry Crosses the Mersey to play at Spa

In the early sixties, Gerry and the Pacemakers worked the same Liverpool/Hamburg circuit as the Beatles and many other groups before being signed in 1962 by manager Brian Epstein, as his second group after the Beatles.

The following year, under the direction of producer George Martin, they burst on the scene with three consecutive No.1 hits –“How Do You Do It”, “I Like It” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” – proving themselves serious competitors to the Beatles. Over the next few years, most of the Pacemakers subsequent hits were actually written by Gerry Marsden, including “It’s All Right”, “I’m the One”, “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Cryin’” and “Ferry Cross the Mersey”(also the name of a film in which they starred).

“Gerry Cross the Mersey” comes to the Spa Pavilion, Felixstowe this month and is a journey down memory lane with Gerry performing all the great songs from his repertoire interspersed with stories and anecdotes from his days on the road. At-Home Theatre from Kidz Drama Acting is a lot of fun and a great way to boost a young child’s confidence. Kidz Drama is a new Suffolk business aiming to get more children involved with comedy and drama by performing hilarious plays at home.

Kidz Drama scripts are designed for ages seven and up, but are suitable for the whole family to enjoy. The play pack encourages children to create and build different scenes as part of the preparation; they have rehearsal time to learn lines and the script is structured for a 20 to 30 minute performance depending on ability.

At only £6.99 each, Kidz Drama plays offer great value and are ideal for parties, sleepovers and those rainy weekends or holidays. They come with a parent’s planning schedule and an invitation template to get friends and family involved. The individual scripts are emailed to parents as a PDF so they can either be printed off easily or performed off mobile devices. Eastern Angles are back with a fascinating new production telling the wartime story of what happened when the American GIs arrived in rural East Anglia.

In May 1942, the first Eighth U.S. Army Air Force planes arrived. This moment in history, often referred to as ‘the friendly invasion’, had a huge impact on our cultural life.

Polly Wiseman’s new play shows a hidden side to this shared history – a tale of segregation, friendships forged and then blown apart, and outsiders learning to live amongst the locals. There’s also jitterbugging Land Girls, Hershey bars, Nylons and Americans bemused by our warm beer!

This theatre production will tour across the East of England this Spring and includes performances at the Sir John Mills Theatre in Ipswich from 25th until 30th April. Plus, there will be a site-specific performances at Thorpe Abbotts airfield in Norfolk and Debach Airfield in Suffolk. The tour will roundoff with three shows at Woodbridge Community Hall on June 3rd and 4th.

National Pet Month Not only does National Pet Month promote responsible pet ownership, but it encourages pet friendly businesses, groups and individuals to stage and attend pet themed events to raise money for UK pet charities.

Now in its 27th year, National Pet Month offers the nation a chance to celebrate the wonderful impact pets have on our lives and this year will focus on the Top 10 Tips for Responsible Pet Ownership, reminding us of how important it is for us to provide the very best levels of care for our pets.

National Pet Month’s Top 10 Tips are: 1. Think carefully before getting a pet and learn about its special requirements.

2. Ensure your pet is sociable and well trained.

3. Provide a nutritious and well balanced diet.

4. Provide suitable housing and bedding.

5. Clean up after your pet and worm it regularly.

6. Protect against disease. Your vet can provide you with advice.

7. Prevent unwanted litters and neuter your pet when appropriate.

8. Groom your pet regularly.

9. Control your pet and ensure it is properly identified.

10. Take out pet insurance for dogs, cats, rabbits and horses to cover against unexpected veterinary fees and third party liability.

This year veterinary practices and pet stores around the country are being urged to team up with National Pet Month and display the Top 10 Tips in their shops and surgeries and put on a pet themed event in aid of a favourite UK pet charity.

National Pet Month is also calling on pet friendly businesses across Britain to join in the campaign by either staging a ‘Take Your Pet To Work’ day or other fun pet themed fundraising event.

National Pet Month Chairman Michael Bellingham says, “We’re calling on all UK pet fans to join us in this annual celebration of pet ownership.

Wigwam or Bungalow — Why do we spring clean?

The daffodils are out early this year. My dogs just love nosing around in them. But the ground is still muddy and the grass is still damp and wet, so my gorgeous pups still bring half the outdoors indoors with them. Having dogs means you are always cleaning up after them, much like children. But once a year, or so our mothers taught us, we should have a good old spring clean.

What is the dictionary definition of a spring clean? To clean all of a place, especially your house, very well, including parts you do not often clean. Even if the thought of cleaning doesn’t fill you with horror, the idea you have to go where man or woman has not gone for a very long while can make you put this event off even further!

Spring cleaning is a way to demonstrate pride in ownership/ rentership).

A home and its contents are investments; money spent on something you really love or really need (ideally both). When

you take the time to clean thoroughly and properly, you can maintain and prolong the life of the item or finish for years. Furthermore, it means you live in a cleaner and healthier home - less dust, dust mites, allergens, odours and dirt.

In the past, inadequate heating in homes and small living spaces often meant that certain types of cleaning had to wait for spring. For example, people who used straw thick mattresses, tended to wait till spring to refill these, so that they could use fresh dry hay for filling. Those in cold climates had no other choice

but to wait for warmer weather to hang laundry and bedding outdoors to dry.

There are several suggested origins for spring cleaning based on religious practices. One of these is traced to the Jewish celebration of Passover, which occurs in March or April each year. Prior to the celebration, the home is usually completely cleaned, and people also get rid of any leavened bread, called chametz, which are forbidden foods during the Passover days.

Even crumbs of chametz or a few leftover specks of grains from forbidden flours need to be removed from the home, and typically, Jewish families hunt for any possible chametz crumbs the night before Passover begins.

Later in history, many Eastern Orthodox Churches conducted a week long spring cleaning right before or during the first week of Lent. Other Christians may also use this time to clean the house from floor to roof. Obviously, anyone of any religion, inspired by warmer weather may want to take the time to get a house in order after the winter months.

Another origin for spring cleaning is dated to the Persian/Iranian New Year celebration, called Nouroz, which occurs at the onset of spring.

Traditionally, Iranian women clean everything in the house right before Nouroz begins, including floors, walls, furniture, and ceilings. This is called khooneh takouni which translates to “shaking the house.”

Once the house is shaken, the new season of spring can arrive.

Spring cleaning origins probably represent the time when it was easiest to conduct a good cleaning of living spaces. Extra light allowed people additional time to properly see the messy state of their caves, huts, or teepees. Warmer weather also meant that people could get things thoroughly dry. In rural or agricultural areas, spring cleaning usually coincided with the beginning of planting. It could be an ideal time to organise seeds and get the home ready for the busy months ahead.

It could be that spring cleaning may have more to do with simple biology.

During winter, we’re exposed to less sunlight due to shorter, often miserable days. With a lack of exposure to light, the pineal gland produces melatonin — a hormone that produces sleepiness in humans.

It’s possible that we spring clean simply because we wake up from a winter-long, melatonin-induced stupor and find more energy as the days grow longer when spring arrives.

Some even said we clean our homes so thoroughly in the spring because back in the day, people were trapped inside all winter with coal and wood burning stoves. The first sign of warmth signalled them to let in the fresh air and scrub off the layers of dirt and muck!

Bealings Annual Plant Sale With an entry fee of just £1, there will be the usual vast array of plants including perennials, shrubs, and vegetable plants, to delight gardeners at the Bealings Annual Plant Sale on Saturday 23rd April.

In aid of Great and Little Bealings Churches, the sale has become a major event in the annual Bealings calendar. Visitors will also be able to browse stalls with produce, cakes and fruit to delight everybody. There will be a raffle with great prizes and refreshments will be served all morning.

A very special offer has come in and will be raffled separately, a flight experience in a small light aeroplane, a Piper PA28 Warrior which will be piloted by a qualified pilot. The flight will last about one hour and transport to the airport is included. This would make a wonderful present for someone special or even for yourself!

A Plant Sale will be held at Seaton Road Methodist Church, Felixstowe on Saturday 30th April from 10am until 12pm.

The plants which will include perennials, some bedding plants if the weather has been suitable for them, alpines and maybe some tomato plants, will be supplied by Katie’s Garden Centre, so you can be assured of both quality and value for money.

The proceeds will be for the Church and for MacMillan Cancer Support.

There will also be a book stall and a cake stall and refreshments will be available.

The Plant Sale has now become an annual event and although it seems earlier this year it is still the Saturday of the Mayday Bank Holiday. Those who came to the sale last year went away with lots of bargains, so why not come along this year and see what bargains you can find.

Deben Flower Club will be holding a Quiz Night on Saturday 23rd April in Kirton Church Hall, Church Lane, Kirton at 7pm for 7.30pm.

In Later Life New research reveals fascinating insight:

The life of a 70 year old The average 70-something prefers Elvis to Cliff Richard, reads nine books a year and most likely drives a Ford, new research reveals.

Most septuagenarians get by on just over £300 disposable income a month, a third are still employed and the average 70-something still has £31,504 of debt, results showed. They receive 24 family visits a year and rate The Shawshank Redemption as the best film, with Only Fools and Horses unbeatable when it comes to TV. The study of 2,000 people in their 70s found the average respondent had been in a relationship for more than thirty years.

Regrets? They have a few – mainly that they should have travelled more, while one in seven lamented the one that ‘got away’ where a romantic pursuit didn’t work out. Other regrets were found to be wishing they’d saved more and having a better job too.

The research, commissioned by Nationwide Savings, also found classical music was the most popular genre of choice, closely followed by pop.

When it comes to films the most popular was The Shawshank Redemption, followed by Schindler’s list and The Great Escape. Queen narrowly pipped ABBA to the post of best-loved music act, while the Beatles and Elvis Presley were also among the top five.

Those aged 70 plus are slightly more likely to have a cat than a dog, but over half the population studied did not have a pet. Health is the driving worry for people upon reaching their seventies, though a third still worry about saving money day to day and more than a quarter worry about paying their bills each month.

Andrew Baddeley-Chappell, Head of Savings and Mortgage Policy at Nationwide Building Society, said, “Age is just a number - so it’s encouraging to see our latest life stage study breaking some common misconceptions by highlighting the active lifestyle of many 70 year olds, along with their working status and spending habits.

“That’s not to say that older people are without worries - with health and wealth remaining concerns for many. Both show the importance of preparing for retirement, keeping active and protecting what’s important.”

Sir Ranulph Fiennes, 71, Britain’s most famous explorer, said, “While getting old can be a pain in the neck, it’s a pleasure to see that it’s not just adventurers of my age who are still active and are actually far better at keeping up with ‘the times’ than younger generations might think.”

The average yearly income for a person in their seventies was found to be £21,617 – slightly less than the average 30 year old who pulls in £24,763. A third of those polled are still employed, while the same number get by living on a private pension, according to results.

On top of that the average respondent has £5,227 in savings but just under £27,000 of mortgage debt still and credit card debt of just over £1,500, results showed. Once bills and other spending is accounted for, the average

Ladies are you getting enough sleep?

Almost half of British women say they are not getting enough sleep and don’t feel well-rested when they wake up (43% and 48%).

According to the findings from a survey of over 4,100 UK adults, supported by the Sleep Apnoea Trust Association (SATA) and conducted by YouGov for ResMed Ltd, women are more likely than men to: • Have trouble sleeping (46% versus 36%) • Wake up during the night and not be able to get back to sleep (36% versus 23%) • Become irritable during the day because of their sleep problems (60% versus 47%*) • Feel less confidence in their appearance as a result of a bad night’s sleep (33% versus 20%*) Despite the extent of their sleep problems, only a minority of women visit their GP about sleep issues such as difficulty sleeping (25%) and snoring (6%). These might be symptoms of a sleep disorder called sleep apnoea

Workplaces across Suffolk are heading for the pool for the Great East Swim Workplace Challenge.

The challenge is set for workplace teams of four or more to swim the equivalent of every wave of the Great East Swim; an event coming to the Eastern region on Saturday 18th June at Alton Water, near Ipswich, Suffolk.

The Workplace Challenge takes place until 30th April and features teams logging 1218 lengths of a 25 metre pool, between them, to win £500s of Great East Swim (GES) prizes including team entrance to the open water event on 18th June. Workplace teams do not have to swim together, simply fit indoor swimming into their everyday lives, logging the activity via the Workplace Challenge website or App. Swimming is an excellent activity to be promoting as part of the Workplace Challenge. It is a low impact activity supporting bodyweight, is suitable for all ages and abilities regardless of physical fitness with competitors taking part at a swimming pool nearby at their leisure.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a debilitating condition affecting around 1.5 million adults in the UK. Pregnancy and the menopause can increase a woman’s risk of having sleep apnoea, yet the majority of women in the UK are unaware of this. The symptoms present differently in women than men and include: softer snoring, lower report of sleepiness, insomnia, restless legs, fatigue/day-time sleepiness, depression, headaches and muscle pain. The low level of awareness of the symptoms, risk factors and impact of untreated sleep apnoea also revealed in the survey could be hindering effective diagnosis amongst this high risk group.

Professor John Stradling, a sleep expert from Oxford University says, “Often women think that feeling exhausted is just part of modern life when in fact it could be something more serious. Many are not aware that they may have sleep apnoea meaning that they are missing out on the medical advice or treatment that they need. Remaining untreated leaves women at risk of reduced quality of life and serious health conditions, so it is important that they speak to their GP about any sleep problems that they have – the sooner their sleep issues are addressed by a sleep expert, the better.”

The findings also reveal the impact of frequent sleep problems and how these affect both genders differently. The impact of sleep deprivation on appearance is much more prominent in women than men with women admitting that sleeping problems have caused them to put on weight (31%) and made their skin look less healthy (33%).

“Don’t try and change everything at once as you could feel deprived and give up. Just make a few simple changes and stick with them. For example, limit your alcohol to just the weekends rather than with every day or, if you regularly have treats in the form of crisps, chocolates biscuits etc, reduce the number of times per week you have them.

Weigh yourself just once a week, at the same time, or better still come along to one of our classes and let us help you.

“As for your exercise start slowly and gradually build up. Aim for 10,000 steps each day and try and do some form of exercise on at least five days of the week for 30 minutes. Find an exercise buddy as it is all too easy to miss your exercise but if you are doing something together you can encourage each other. If you are on your own then why not come along to one of our classes and workout with other likeminded people.

Many of our members have started a class on their own but have soon made friends at the classes.

“Whatever form of exercise you decide on make sure it is something you enjoy as you are more likely to stick with it.

The best advice I can give is to start today as you can always find an excuse to start tomorrow and then tomorrow something comes up and before you know it another week has gone past!”

Children spending 2 hours a day on screened devices at home The majority of children are spending two hours or more a day in front of screened devices when at home, according to new research from BenQ, which also reveals 72% of parents are happy to allow their kids to use a smartphone or tablet.

The research, conducted with 500 UK parents of children aged 15 years or under, reveals that 74% of children spend on average 14 hours a week using screened devices at home. In contrast only 11% of parents say their children spend more than 10 hours playing outside a week.

say they are also anxious about the impact of the use of screened devices on their child’s eye health, but it’s a worryingly low percentage given that 32% of parents have themselves experienced issues including headaches, blurred vision and eye irritation after using a screened device.

With such high technology usage, only 18% of parents say they did not worry about their child’s eye health when using screened devices, with 64% citing worries about behavioural issues and 34% concerned about poor posture. Over half (55%)

As a chartered counselling psychologist – perhaps not surprisingly - much of my work is one-to-one counselling.

Spring sneezes…

Spring is officially here! However at the same time seasonal allergies emerge in earnest to give us another ailment to fight.

From sneezes to sore throats, pollen problems to eye complaints, there is a long list that we have to potentially contend with.

Hayfever affects around one in four people in the UK. Yet sneezes, itchy eyes and lethargy can affect all of us so there is reason for us all to take notice and become as prepared as possible in time for spring. Allergy Awareness Week on 25th April – 1st May is a great opportunity for everyone to learn more about allergy symptoms and how best to combat them.

Wearing wraparound sunglasses can reduce the amount of pollen or spores that enter your eyes. Allergy irritated eyes are also more sensitive to sunlight so stylish shades can help to ease the discomfort of sore eyes too!

Pollen is often compared to dust but it’s actually much stickier! When it finds its way into your hair it can transfer onto your pillow causing further irritation throughout the night and leave you feeling groggy in the morning. If you have been outside during the day taking a warm shower before bed can help minimise the impact and promote a good night’s sleep!

Spiritual Awareness

This approach turns out to be remarkably effective with a very broad range of human problems!

Rob’s Spiritual Awareness Centre takes place on the first Friday of every month at the Trimley Welcome Hall.

Earlier in my career I worked for 20 years managing counselling services at an London prison. This is an environment where you meet extremes of abuse, trauma, loss, and neglect. And, consequently, a broad range of mental illness, and virtually every psychological diagnostic label that has ever been handed out. I developed an expertise with the extreme and bizarre, as well as the commonplace human challenges of stress, depression, anxiety.

Here you will find a demonstration of medium-ship, or a talk, on a variety of spiritual subjects and believes. As well as many stalls with crystal jewellery polymer clay jewellery, body products, plus stalls by crafters of all kinds and stalls selling crystal, angel and tarot cards, healers.

There will also be Tarot Card Readers, an Angel Card Reader and a Spiritual/ medium artist.

As part of my own personal development - long before training as a psychologist - I had learned about mindfulness and I developed ways of integrating the two approaches, mindfulness and counselling, into that frontline prison work.

“I started this Centre from the benefit of all Faiths and Believes and for the local Charities and Good Causes as this is none profit making.” Says Rob Lummis, founder of the Spiritual Awareness Centre, “My thought is that when all people of all denominations, greed’s, gender, and colour sit down together and chat with great respect for each other, is the Day we start to move forward. Come along, have a nice cuppa and a cake, join with old friends, and meet new ones.”

Nowadays, I work with (and teach) an approach known as “acceptance and commitment therapy, ACT” - a recent development that does a great job of integrating mindfulness with therapy.

And not just with therapy, it is a great tool for life-coaching, it’s spot-on with couples counselling, exceptionally effective in mediation, and I offer supervision and training to those people who want to learn how to use it to help other people.

And since I’ve moved fully into private practice, I have developed all the above services that I can deliver by telephone, online, and by Skype as well as face to face in Ipswich, Woodbridge and Felixstowe I have been teaching the eight-week mindfulness course, (MBCT/MBSR) in Suffolk since 2004. Invaluable learning for the management of stress, anxiety, and depression - and also a great opportunity for local people interested to know more about mindfulness for personal or professional development. Monthly drop-in groups, day retreats and longer residential retreats are offered to support ongoing learning.

Motorists given stark reminder about dangers of extending MOTs UK motorists are being reminded that a valid MOT certificate is not an indication of a vehicle’s roadworthiness for a 12-month period, at a time when the government is proposing an extension for MOT testing for new cars from 2017.

The message comes from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) approved independent garage code, Trust My Garage, which is warning that government plans to extend the period for new cars and motorbikes to have their first MOT from three to four years would risk making UK roads more dangerous. Waiting a further year before testing vehicles at a time when motorists are far less likely to conduct basic safety checks themselves, when the state of our roads continues to be poor and when some vehicles are covering very high mileages indeed is a risky combination.

The Retail Motor Industry Federation, the organisation behind Trust My Garage, will be responding to the consultation on the proposal, as will the automotive industry’s ProMOTe campaign. Their new website, www.ProMOTe.org.uk, is dedicated to providing further education to UK motorists on the MOT test, and explains why the campaign opposes the government plans.

Terry Gibson, from Trust My Garage, explained, “We believe the government should not be changing the time required for a new car or motorbike to have its first MOT test when we have some of the safest roads in Europe. An extension has the potential to put motorists’ lives at risk and could lead to a rise in the number of unsafe vehicles on the road, as well as a potential increase in car mileage fraud.”

The ProMOTe campaign is a coalition representing road safety groups, motoring organisations and industry bodies all opposed to what are considered to be dangerous, expensive and unnecessary government plans. Statistics from the DVSA reveal that even at three years old, more than one in five cars fail the MOT and waiting a further year before the first test will only increase this number.

As the ProMOTe coalition continues to challenge government proposals, the message from Trust My Garage to consumers is to remember that irrespective of when the first test takes place, a valid MOT is not a substitute for regular servicing, and certainly not an indication of continued roadworthiness for the 12 months that follow the test.

Terry Gibson continued, “There is a belief that because modern cars are typically becoming more reliable, they do not need to be tested so frequently.

This is not correct. Not only is the MOT failure rate higher than it was in 2008 many components such as tyres and brakes are likely to have become dangerous by the time a vehicle is four-years-old. We believe that these risks are exacerbated by the fact many motorists rely on the MOT to check the roadworthiness of their vehicle rather than to confirm it.

“Extending the first MOT to when a car is four-years-old will only encourage motorists to postpone necessary maintenance work for an extra year, putting them and other motorists at risk from hidden dangerous faults they may be unaware of.”

Too old to drive

More than one million motorists over the age of 65 are risking a £1,000 fine, prosecution and the safety of other road users by failing to disclose serious medical conditions.

New research from Direct Line Car Insurance reveals almost three in ten (28 per cent) older motorists have medical conditions such as visual impairments, diabetes, heart conditions or epilepsy that must be disclosed to the DVLA. Despite this, almost half (49 per cent) have failed to tell the DVLA about their condition.

Of those over 65 that have failed to disclose their conditions, most (57 per cent) say this is because they don’t feel their condition affects their driving.

One in eight (12 per cent) say they weren’t aware of this obligation and 27 per cent cite ‘other’ reasons.

While the insurer’s study raises concerns about the number of older motorists that could be driving without a valid licence, over 65s are by no means alone. Across the UK as a whole, a quarter (24 per cent) of drivers have so called ‘notifiable conditions’ but one in 10 (nine per cent) have not disclosed this to the DVLA.

“The issue of failing to disclose medical conditions is particularly prevalent amongst older motorists but the rules are the same regardless of age, experience or the severity of a medical issue. We’re urging anyone that thinks they may have a condition or a disability they need to disclose to contact the DVLA and their insurer as they risk invalidating their licence and insurance if they don’t.”

Direct Line’s study looked at the prevalence of some of the most common medical conditions that should be disclosed and found that physical disabilities – affecting a tenth (11 per cent) of older drivers - are only disclosed half (48 per cent) of the time.

There are currently four million drivers with a full licence aged 70 or over and 230 drivers aged 100 or above.

Direct Line offers the following advice for drivers with a serious medical condition4: Contact the DVLA if you are unsure whether or not you need to disclose any information. If your doctor has told you that you need to stop driving, you will need to send your licence to the DVLA. If you have a medical condition and are unsure if it should be disclosed to the DVLA, then you can check online here: https://www.gov.uk/health-conditions-and-driving

How to reapply for a new licence: DVLA will send you a letter when your licence is taken away or surrendered, or if your application for a driving licence is refused. This tells you if there’s a period of time you need to wait before getting a new licence. You can then reapply eight weeks before the end of this period.

If you are eligible to reapply, you will need to complete a D1 application form and the form for your medical condition and send them to DVLA. You may also need to send evidence of your fitness to drive, but the letter from DVLA will tell you if this is the case.
