Why?

Volets Fermés (Closed Shutter) Academic, Fall 2023 Site: Paris, France

The 16th arrondissement treats social housing tenants with obvious disdain. They can hardly make themselves heard in the public space.

How?

The Petite Ceinture, an abandoned railway track has three different activities namely, Salons, Guinguettes and Algerian Rai which will help the future tenants associate a homely feeling with the 16 arrondissement.

“Volets Fermés” explores the phenomenon of window shuttering in Paris, interpreting it as a manifestation of class divides, urban lacunae, and a distancing from the ‘other’.The project seeks to uncover the stories behind each closed shutter, addressing elements of personal sanctity, societal stratifications, echoes of history, and ecological anxiety. Revealing the magnitude and quality of vacant apartments in the 16th arrondissement, the project seeks strategies to legally redistribute these spaces to Parisians in search of homes.

While 70% of them are eligible for affordable housing, an alarming 45% still grapple with housing needs. Drawing inspiration from the French legal concepts of “escheat” (uhs cheet) (déchéance) and “right of lapse” (droit de déshérence), as well as the more assertive method of “expropriation,” the project envisions fostering social diversity in an area traditionally characterized by rigid class distinctions, potentially ushering in residents from a broader economic spectrum.

2. Guinguettes

The roof merges with the open spaces, which acts as a point of confluence for all the different levels, leading to social engagement.

3. Algerian Rai

Immigrants moving from different arrondissements of Paris are usually from North Africa, and they need a sp is being expressed.

The singers in Algerian Rai are the ones who rejected the refined, classical poetry of traditional Algerian music. They sang about the adversity of urban life in a raw gritty.

Court-Town

Communal Living With Individually Tailored Private Domains

Corktown is a neighborhood with good bones – its existing streets, blocks, shops and parks set out the structure for its future – one that will play host to new and existing residents, businesses and visitors.

How?

Communal living and shared common spaces encourage residents to create support networks, while reducing individual cost burden.

Academic, Winter 2023 Site: Corktown, Detroit Concern over rising rates of loneliness, social isolation, and increasing costs of housing are central to the design concept of Courtown. Sited in the historic and disinvested neighborhood of Corktown, Detroit, this project seeks to encourage a thriving community through social connection and environments that heal.

A multitude of housing typologies, densities, and amenities are provided throughout the site to support a wide-range of lifestyles. Within each building, spaces are designed to be adaptable to cater to the changing needs of its residents.

Special attention is given to circulation spaces and courtyards to increase likelihood of casual interactions among residents. A multitude of amenities and opportunities for live-work spaces are along 14th street, providing foundations for a lively commercial corridor.

CourtTown

The City of Detroit launched the Greater Corktown Planning Framework study in summer 2019. It is an initiative that engages residents in creating a plan that promotes inclusive growth of Detroit’s oldest established neighborhood.

My partner and I adopted a complementary approach to this project. We divided the digital world, where I focused on crafting the final, visually stunning representation of the design, while she skillfully handled the import of the base structure from Revit. Both of us poured our design ideas into the model, collaborating seamlessly through a cloud-based platform. This allowed us to continuously refine and update the digital model, ensuring our creative vision stayed synchronized. I felt compelled to translate our digital creation into a tangible expression, constructing a physical model that brought the design to life in three dimensions.

Neighbourhood The neighbourhood of Corktown lacks the physical presence of a typical neighbourhood. Houses are sparse, the wind is harsh, and it feels disjointed from its urban context.

Our proposal aims to create connection, while respecting current contexts and acknowledging historical development patterns. A central theme of well-being and collective space is embeded in natural components of our proposed environment

Statelessness

An architectural host for “uninvited” guests.

Unstable housing affects a student’s ability to learn and to do well in school, resulting in a learning loss.

How?

Architects and urban designers can provide spaces and services to those who have none.

Academic, Fall 2022 Site: Echo Park, L.A, U.S.A “Matters of Statelessness” understands the current population (approx. 580,466 on any given night) of unhoused/homeless people in the United States as a complex, shifting and underrepresented body politic living in dispersed settlements across the country.

The two objects, paper chair and paper-tubes, were designed for the unhoused children which could be made by them. The studio discussed about the limits of architectural intervention and how can they be pushed?

The paper tubes were collected and re-used to make the module. The urban scale object totsie roll is constructed from paper tube which could be used as a table, chair and a playing element by children.

The 3 tubes at each corner of the module is filled with fillers like sand to be more stable.

How?

Rural Women Empowerment Centre

Only 35% of the women in Muval village earn, rest are homemakers. Knowledge centre, workshops and public spaces will help them to interact and learn from each other’s experience.

Academic, Fall 2020 Site: Muval, Gujarat, India Site Area: 9000 sqmt.

Total Built-up: 3200 sqmt.

The studio aimed to design a knowledge Centre for the women of Muval village near Vadodara, Gujarat, India. The core idea was to empower the women by educating them and helping them set up their own small scale business.

Survey was conducted and the program was designed for 600-800 women. The precinct is adjacent to the existing lake, and the building is oriented accordingly.

The main focus was to explore different design ideas of institutional characters in organization, form, materials and workout the appropriate structural system. The program was intended to give total freedom, with logical reasoning and practical solution for the proposed built-form.

Better When Messy, Liberty Annex Kevin Moultrie Daye

Fostered clear communication channels among architectural teams and exhibitors to facilitate coordination and project success for Kevin Moultrie Daye with his exhibit on “Better when Messy”. Assisted in using the KUKA robot to wrap the carbon fiber around the boxes, and then melted the cardboard of the boxes to attain the final shape.

Rehousing Rome

From Self-Built Settlements to Fascist-Built Borgate Anna Mascorella

The map of Rome modified by the Governatorato’s Office of Social Assistance, charts the location of the self-built settlements (baracche) across the city as of 1933. Proficiently utilized architectural design software to contribute to the creation of visually striking and functionally optimized exhibition displays for Anna Mascorella on “Rehousing Rome”.

Assisted in displaying and attaching the drawings on the white wall.
