TESTIMONIOS: - The role of the pharmacist in treating patients with cancer is providing guidance regarding their medications and to promote self-care through health education. Health education can include learnign how to recognize and manage their symptoms and potential side effects. Adressing the potential toxicity of cancer treatments requires specific pharmaceutical care in order to avoid them. -
My maternal grandmother was diagnosed with cancer when I was 16, unfortunately she did not succeed in the battle against this disease, it was very hard to see how day after day she struggled to face this situation, during that time; I knew the word chemotherapy because it was part of the treatment she had to fight cancer, I did not know the way they were performed. Now as a pharmaceutical chemist I know that the chemotherapies that are prepared day by day are a sign of hope for all those patients. They are a small piece of the puzzle that contributes to improve cáncer patient’s health and we are very pleased to be part of the recovery process of many people.

I have a very dear patient who is fighting against this difficult disease. Throughout this career and with the completion of my hospital practicums I have realized that pharmaceutical chemists play an important role in the treatment of this disease. We are contributing our piece of the puzzle to help the large number of people who suffer and are being treated. I have acquired both theoretical and practical knowledge regarding this disease. I have come to know and experience exactly what we contribute towards these patients, since at the hospital level it is the pharmacist who leads the development of cytostatic mixtures. We contribute pharmaco-technical knowledge, analyze pharmacological and quality indicators, and constantly follow-up with patients and their treatments. Personally, seeing the name of the patient on each mixture that I prepare, motivates me even more to do this work and thus contribute to the fight of this disease.

One of my favorite phrases is “Behind every medication is a Pharmaceutical Chemist’’, but very few understand this. Cancer treatment could be seen in a superficial way, such as just the time required to perform the chemotherapy, but if we go deeper we will see that chemotherapy was carefully prepared by a pharmaceutical chemist. In order to verify the safety and efficacy of this medication, a pharmaceutical chemist was also involved. In the treatment against cáncer, the role of a Pharmaceutical Chemist is very important! Our role is not superficial, our role transcends through the smile of a patient who won the fight against Cancer…because in the end a Pharmaceutical Chemist was also involved.
