Welcome to the second annual Frankfurt IPR License Rights Magazine. After launching at last year’s Frankfurt Book Fair, the magazine has already had a redesign, grown in size and widened its distribution channels. Inside remains a range of fantastic titles just waiting to be discovered by publishers and agents around the globe. And we’re seeing more and more authors maximising and monetising the rights they hold to their work.

The Frankfurt Book Fair itself remains by far the largest and the most important one-off rights and licensing event in the publishing calendar. And this year it’s also great to see an increased emphasis on authors with a two-day programme dedicated to international self-published and indie authors.

Tom founded IPR License in 2012 as an answer to the problems he was facing as an independent publisher – he recognised the need for immediate revenue streams to supplement book sales revenue. Why wasn’t there an online platform to enable global licensing on a much wider scale? To provide this, IPR License was created.

Caroline started her career in publishing in the Contracts and Rights Departments at Penguin Random House. By the time she left in 2014, she handled all US and translation rights for the Random House Cornerstone Division. She now leads licensing activities at IPR, working with publishers & authors looking to trade and license rights on the site.

Kerry has joined IPR from the rights department at Pan Macmillan and has a strong background in licensing from her previous roles at Little, Brown Book Group and EDItEUR. Abbie has been a part of IPR License since its launch in 2012. She currently manages the accounts on the system, helping publishers and authors get the most out of the platform, as well as helping to develop the product. She continues to develop the site to make the ever-changing world of rights and licensing a simple process for publishers.

Scott has worked within the financial services sector for over nine years as a journalist, editor, PR and copywriter. He co-founded specialist PR company White Dragon Communications Ltd before leaving to set up his own company FlatCap Communications in 2011. He now handles the press and publicity for IPR License.

Libby joined IPR last year and launched the IPR Rights Magazine in October 2013.

It is distributed at the biggest international book fairs and publishing events. As well producing as the magazine, she also manages sales and accounts for both publisher and author members, while heading IPR’s promotions & marketing for sales.

After the success of our first presence at the Beijing International Book Fair we are excited to be in talks with vast numbers of Chinese publishers who are looking to buy and sell rights on a global scale. With this in mind we will be working with them closely over the coming months to develop a proposition which will enable us to deliver real value to them and their authors on an on-going basis.

The fact is that we are signing up members from all over the world on a daily basis and seeing more deals being done with greater regularity. And it’s not just our transactional licensing platform for whole book rights which is seeing greater volumes of business.

trade publishers In recent months we have seen sustained interest from trade publishers to boost their permissions business through

an automated bolt-on solution. This demand has led to a raft of enhancements being made to TradeRights – IPR’s bespoke transactional licensing and permission platform - to help automate the permissions process across a range of trade and academic publishing houses.

Whilst permission business remains a large revenue generator for the vast majority of educational, management, medical and technical presses there is a danger that trade publishers could under-prioritise this vital revenue stream because of the resources required and time implications involved.

However, with margins being squeezed this is an area in which more and more trade publishers have expressed sustained interest in. And we have the technology which allows us to complete all permission transactions on the platform within hours, including the issuing of the contract and payment. Meaning we can help transform permissions business via a fast, costeffective solution complete with an attractive ROI which will continue to appeal to publishing houses and presses of all sizes.

License Author Index quizzed a variety of authors on the subject of permissions and whilst 11% of respondents reported that they hadn’t sold permissions to their works, almost three quarters (73%) suggested that they would use an automated online platform to search, list, buy and sell permissions. At the time we noted that this represented an encouraging figure and it’s clear that this interest continues to grow.

author hub We are also pleased to announce the launch of a brand new section of the IPR website. Author Hub is an exclusive area for author members, which includes how to get started on the site, events, articles, competitions and a directory of services.

We are incorporating this into our Know Your Rights campaign, to help Indie Authors to get licensingsavy and help them to generate rights revenue. This, coupled with the recently updated Help Centre, should allow first-time rights sellers to get to grips with rights and permissions.

London Publishing Partnership is (not surprisingly) based in London. We publish academic, academic/trade and professional books related to economics, business and finance. The company was founded in 2010 and has grown considerably since then. The original aim of the company was to be a ‘packager’ for learned societies and think tanks, and not to publish under our own imprint.

By popular demand we soon started publishing our own books in addition to the books we publish under other imprints. Under the LPP imprint, our most successful venture has been our Perspectives series of trade paperbacks, edited by Diane Coyle. This series now includes books by Jim O’Neill, Andrew Sentance, Julia Unwin, Bridget Rosewell, Dave Birch and Kate Barker. Our biggest list under another imprint is the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA). We are keen to license our works into all territories.

Pitch Publishing is an independent publisher, focusing on quality sports publishing, with an eye for innovation. We distribute to all corners of the UK, our trade customers include Waterstones, WHSmiths, Amazon, HMV, independent booksellers and sports clubs. We have worked with FIFA, the Football Association, streetfootballworld, Kick4Life, Adidas, Samsung, Blue Square and over 30 Football League, Premiership and SPL clubs - not to mention a number of players and managers.

Our rights are available worldwide for the majority of our titles. We are keen to license to Asia, China, North America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. New Member Showcase Based in Buckinghamshire, England, Hilltop Publishing’s core titles include a two-part environmental satire based on the characters from The Wind In The Willows, entitled The Wind In The Pylons, written by Gareth Lovett Jones, and some cutting modern fiction from PJ Goddard – notably Libidan and Criminal.

The company’s management has core skills in literary appreciation and editing on the one hand, and promotional marketing on the other. It is our intention to turn on its head the current notion that there is no longer room in the book trade for small independent publishers, and to demonstrate that it is quality, not size, that dictates commercial success.

Proverse is based in Hong Kong and publishes a wide variety of books: fiction and literary fiction, thrillers, autobiographies, biographies, diaries and memoirs, single-author poetry collections (and one epic poem), academic books and books for those of all ages wishing to extend their knowledge and skills. Audio-books on CD are included with some poetry-collections and one biography.

We are seeking to license print rights, e-book, audio, broadcasting, film, anthology, serial, translation, etc. rights to all territories.

Most of our publishing is in English, though we do have a few titles in Chinese. Our writers’ work is excellent; their subjects include unusual themes and thoughtful ideas, as well as fascinating variations within well-known genres. The settings vary between universal and exotic.

Linen Press is a small, Edinburgh-based, independent press run by women, for women. The collective background of our authors is a multi-coloured patchwork of cultures, ages and writing styles.

Established authors have set up camp with us, but we will continue to publish diverse, surprising, exceptional writing by emergent and minority writers, bucking the trend set by the Big Five of putting resources into crowd pleasers.

We are building a multi-cultural list with authors from across the globe. Four novels on our list are set in Africa and India, by Nigerian, Indian and British authors, so we’re keen to sell foreign rights to those countries and beyond. And if you’re wondering about the name, a press is a cupboard found in Edinburgh houses which is wide enough only for a row of books. Linen unfolds like a story.

New Member Showcase Authentic Media, based in Milton Keynes, England, represents both the Authentic and Paternoster imprints which has existed for over 70 years. The Authentic imprint represents some of the best inspirational biographies written by people who lives have been transformed by an encounter with God, together with books reflecting a whole range of Christian life teaching. Paternoster titles represent the some of the best theological thinkers and academic professors from a wide variety of Bible schools and universities.

We are hoping to license our titles into those territories which are experiencing huge growth in Christian population - that is South America, Asia and Central and Southern Africa.

Authentic are a wholly owned subsidiary of Koorong Pty based in Sydney, Australia and also publish a wide range of other products.

The Polperro Heritage Press was founded in 1995, publishing Cornish local history. Today it is based in Worcestershire in the UK, having extended its range of non-fiction titles that now includes a number of biographies, guides and first-hand accounts of Second World War events.

Managing Editor Jerry Johns (aka Jeremy Rowett Johns) is a descendant of the Cornish smugglers, a subject that he both writes and broadcasts on. The English language rights to most of our back list of 50 titles are currently available worldwide, and there are several which are particularly suitable for translation.

Life-work Potential are based in England and specialise in non-fiction books by Jane Thurnell-Read on health with a complementary medicine slant. We also publish more technical books for kinesiologists etc. Our books in English cover topics such as geopathic stress, allergies, health and happiness tips, weight loss tips, health kinesiology, and nutritional testing for kinesiologists.

Our rights are available worldwide for the majority of our titles and we are particularly keen to negotiate foreign language rights.

Jane is a former English teacher, university lecturer and worked as a complementary therapist and international teacher for over 20 years.

She enjoys making information easily accessible without dumbingdown the content.

New Member Showcase Lee Gone Publications (LGP) is an independent publishing partnership based in Brighton, England. LGP specialises in humour books and cards that explore the themes of language, culture and national identity. It was started in 1994 by two colleagues at a Brighton language school, who write and illustrate all their own products.

With next to no start-up capital, and minimal infrastructure, they have achieved sales of over 300,000 books and millions of postcards.

The How to be British imagery (such as the drowning man who is saved by learning English politeness) is popular all over the world and has frequently been reproduced in foreign publications to exemplify cultural differences. Their latest book, just published, is Get Around in English: The Fun Language Guide.

Sandbag Fitness is based in Bath, UK and publishes books that feature unconventional ways for people to improve their fitness. Our Sandbag Training books have received awards and been featured in numerous magazines - both in print and online. We are now looking to license our titles, especially in the Asian and European markets.

Ettes Publishing is a Sussex-based independent publisher producing titles for the brand Popagami – a fun family origami activity. We publish activity books and packs for children, eBooks, memoirs, paper-based toys and activities, as well as bespoke Popagami designs to accompany books.

We offer this internationally for all English-speaking territories but a big market for our books is in Asia, countries like Japan, China and South Korea. For Europe we have a number of translations completed and ready to license.

Q: Can you tell us about the types of books and some of the authors you publish?

Our categories of; Health, Selfhelp, Spiritual and General (Animals, Poetry, etc.), offer books to help readers feel better about themselves and life. All of our authors are experts in their chosen field and have written their book to share their wisdom.

Q: Your titles are highly inspirational – what inspired you to enter the world of publishing?

I love writing and I well remember my early attempts to have a book published. By becoming a publisher I could help clever and insightful new authors, as well as offering wisdom and inspiration to the public.

Commencing in South Africa, then expanding into Australia, we have grown with the demands of the market. Where at first, we offered traditional publishing, [we] now also offer a publishing service were we hand-hold “self-publishers” who have something unique to teach. To support this we offer writing mentorship.

Well, I am the founding member. It’s amazing how it started. About six years ago, after many years of writing, I

IPR License Author Member, Tom Tottis, tells us about how he felt compelled to write his dual biography about Julia, a young Hungarian woman and her son, Tommy, brought up in the wind of Nazism.

Q: A Long Look Back is a true story about the struggle with Nazism, tyrannical Communism, the Hungarian Uprising in 1956 and the aftermath, how difficult was this to write?

Writing about my experiences, as well as the cruelty and the suffering my mother and I had witnessed and had survived was not difficult at all, because however painful the memories might be the past cannot be undone, therefore one has to accept it and learn to live with it.

Even though my account of events had been verified by historians, encyclopedias and so on, I was concerned that, since they had not been widely reported at the time, readers might not

believe they had actually happened.

Q: How would you describe the book?

The story, commencing in 1921 at Budapest and concluding in 1995 London, portraying in the course of hard and violent times a family’s struggle, losses, tragedies and happy times, falls into several categories: 1) A 20th century family saga of three generations with actual and shocking historical background 2) A dual biography of mother and son, confronted by seemingly insurmountable obstacles 3) A fascinating thriller;

Q: Why did you choose to self-publish? And what do you see as the benefits/drawbacks?

Readers who had stumbled upon my websites had contacted me even from the USA, Canada and Australia and I assume there must have been other readers as well of whom I know not.

By the eighties the number of my contemporaries had diminished somewhat, so I had set about writing a novel, in part a testimony of events that, to my knowledge, had never been reported.

Despite trying hard, I had failed to find an agent or publisher, so when New Generation Publishing offered to publish my book I jumped at the chance.

The disadvantage selfpublished authors and their books experience is that literary circles and critics regard them as if they were afflicted by the bubonic plague, hence ignore them completely!

Q: Have you had any interest in the book from Hungary and the surrounding countries? Is this a topic that you think would be of interest in this region?

Yes, there had been and would be interest in the book, because virtually no stories had been published giving account of events that took place in Central European countries, all of them occupied by the German Army after 1939, which was followed in 1945 by Soviet occupation and oppression and the resultant, so called, ‘socialist’ system.

Q: You’ve said you had some trouble finishing the book, has putting some closure on this story inspired you to write more or less, and if so what’s next?

Finishing a book, [as] a true story, when one or more of the participants are still alive, can be problematic: Where, at what point or event, does one conclude?

Owing to an unusual episode that occurred, my book had indeed had a fitting closure.

Despite having been urged by some readers, I do not believe I could write another story. Writing a narrative of what one has seen, experienced, witnessed etc., is comparatively easy.

Writing novels from scratch one needs to have the talent of Alexander Dumas, or Charles Dickens, or Hemingway, just to name a few, which, sadly, I do not.

After organising over 50 publishing events across the globe, the team at BookMachine have seen a fair few success stories of people working the publishing scene successfully.

Most people think that the concept of ‘networking’ sounds insincere. So what is it that makes some people thrive at networking? And how can you excel at it without coming across as needy, pushy or self-serving? In an industry that’s built on developing good relationships there are plenty of good examples to follow.

Building up a network of contacts can take a while, but publishers are renowned for helping each other out and sharing advice. It can be daunting at first, especially if you are new to the industry and are not naturally extrovert.

However, over time the relationships you develop at social and networking events will have a huge impact on your career and on your enjoyment of the publishing industry, so it’s worth making the effort to network successfully.

Here are BookMachine’s top tips to get you started at this year’s Frankfurt:

Know how you want to present your business off by-heart and backwards, and have a stack of business cards in your pocket.

If the person you are speaking to has a problem, how can you solve it? Who can you introduce them to? Your main goal should actually be to help others. This is the best way to be remembered favourably.

Networking is a two-way street, and you need to offer value to people you speak to.

Smile!

Everyone wants to meet new people and have a good time.

Smiling makes you more approachable and you’re more likely to have fun too.

Know your limits Don’t drink so much that you’re incomprehensible. You might not remember what you muttered in the Russian editor’s ear, but she will!

It’s not a numbers game It’s better to meet 5 people you genuinely click with, than speak to 50 and not remember much about each person.

Focus on finding the people who are relevant to you rather than shove your business cards into the hands of everyone you meet. However, at the same time…

incessantly can sound a bit insincere; but writing it down a couple of times or whispering if to yourself after you walk away can help you to remember them later.

Turn up on time When you’re invited to an event, it’s tempting to show up fashionably late. However, if you can get there early you’ll notice that its calmer and quieter and you can pick people to talk to before others have settled into their groups.

Ask questions

Don’t ask for work

Rather than thinking ‘what am I going to say now?’ try to find out about other people.

You’ll be surprised at how quickly you find topics of common interest. You’ll also learn a lot more than if you talk incessantly about your own views on Amazon.

If you start off asking for work you’ll come across as an opportunist and people will shy away. Wait until you’ve established good relationships with people first. (Unless you’re speaking to a recruiter!)

Remember names

Keep email content minimal

If you struggle to remember people’s names there are a variety of tricks to help.

Repeating their name

don’t dismiss anyone as irrelevant If you do happen to meet someone who might not have similar interests as you, do still connect and show an interest. You never know

After you meet someone follow up swiftly and briefly.

Praise the person you spoke to, remind them how you met and offer value in some way.

But keep it short. A longwinded explanation of why you are getting in touch can seem needy if you have only met once or twice.

Offer introductions It’s always good to introduce like-minded people you meet. Do you know two people who publish the same types of books? Or live in the same area? These type of introductions can be really useful for your network.

It’s often worth asking one of them if they want to be connected first. Even if they aren’t interested, they will still appreciate the offer.

Prose, Photos and Poems is a publication of some of my work that I did for my creative writing course.

Q: Can you tell us about the books you have written?

I have written two crime thrillers and one compendium of poetry, prose, travelogues and photographs.

Text: Murder sets the scene for The Rialto Trilogy.

Kaminska, a Polish border guard, and Carpenter an aging DI, team up to solve the murder of a beautiful German teenager.

Devil’s Gate continues the story. A skeleton is found in Ramsgate and is proved to be the murderer’s daughter. The

content that was from my past experience, in selling spare parts for public works machines. TV is a great influence for me, as it is for many writers. I draw characters from coffee shops and people that I meet.

Q: The Rialto Trilogy are a series of crime thrillers – how did you come up with the story lines and do you know how they end?

Travelling to a place and making it a character is important to my work. I work to a basic recipe, but as most of my work is contemporary, I do have to change things as I go along. I know where the characters end up and the end scenes, but if anything takes my fancy I put it into the story.

One of my personal story loves is swords and sorcery style fiction. The plot is about a group of humans and cats looking for a kitten. It incorporates some pre-British history.

About the Author: Although George had trouble with reading and writing at school, he loved hearing stories, and reading them, however slowly. One of the first books that he was given was The Wizard of Oz. The second was The Hobbit by J.R. Tolkien and he was so beguiled about these books that he dreamed of writing one himself.

He went to secondary school near Watford, he wasn’t entirely happy there, but if he got bored in class he would look out of the window at March hares, trains on the tracks going North, and the Rolls Royce Helicopter engine factory. He didn’t realise that the factory would become a

movie studio for James Bond films and the Harry Potter franchise movies.

His writing was physically bad and he got a lot of fear in his life, but when walking tired along the canal path from school he would describe each step to himself as if he was writing a novel.

He took to maths; no writing needed, but dropped out in the first year of his Maths degree.

Next came years in stores for construction equipement manufacturers and public works manufacturers, where he got some of the plot and characters for this book. He is indebted to these industries for giving him income and the pride of working for British manufactured goods.

He got made redundant and decided to write the first of what he hopes will be many books.

George now lives on the boarders of Kent and East Sussex, England, has a one bed roomed flat with a small garden and dabbles in the light art of solar energy.

He has recently acheived a Certificate in Creative Writing from Kent University. Writing his first book, Text: Murder, has taught him how to write, deal with life and semi colons!

Q: You have worked within the construction industry for over 18 years, would you prefer to be a full-time electrician or a full-time writer?

I recently transitioned this year from working with

I do enjoy my new journey and the lighter workload on my body. I enjoy writing since it is peaceful and allows my creative side to emerge to the surface. Almost 17 years ago, I stepped foot into a maledominated work environment.

Despite the lack of a warm embrace, I pushed my way into this world to learn the trade. I showed my many

mentors that I wanted to be here and was ready to learn and work. After some grit and sweat, I worked my way out of my apprenticeship to become a journeywoman electrician.

I earned a great working reputation within my trade and some aches and pains along the way.

I work with guys from all backgrounds and all walks of life; and a few females that share my goal to be called journeywomen. I studied Law, and used my international travel to correctly identify cities and country descriptions.

In writing, accuracy is the key to success. As a movie director, I learned from Steven Spielberg to keep the action realistic and in motion.

I applied this notion to my writing.
