Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities

| L e t t e r f r o m t h e D i r e c to r | The end of the 2013 academic year marked a mini-milestone for me when I completed a fifth year as Director of the IPRH. Embarking on a second term gave me the opportunity to look back and to do some accounting. Here’s what I discovered: Since fall 2008, IPRH has hosted 68 faculty and graduate student fellows; two Digital Humanities Post-Doctoral fellows, and six Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellows in the Humanities. IPRH has organized five symposia, 37 lectures, 19 workshops/exhibits, two years of OLLI courses, 14 panel discussions/roundtables; and screened approximately 28 films. We have hosted visits by two NEH Chairs, run a daylong workshop with the NEH Director of Research, and hosted the Director of Fellowship Programs from ACLS. Our audiences are both grand and intimate: 825 people attended David Harvey’s public lecture this past November, and smaller gatherings of faculty and students have engaged in close conversations with Harvey and the many other distinguished guests IPRH has brought to campus in the last five years. Three Illinois faculty members have now served as blog editors, and 15 others have contributed essays.

It is gratifying to think of our success in terms of these numbers, and to imagine the impact IPRH makes on the lives of those who attend our events or advance their research through one of our fellowships, those who participate in a stimulating intellectual exchange with a distinguished scholar brought to campus with Event Grants funds, Dianne Harris

or receive important recognition for the production of outstanding work through receipt of one of our prizes. This is the core of what we do, and I’m enormously proud to be part of it.

But I was once trained as an architect, and despite the long road I’ve traveled away from design practice and towards a life as a historian of the built environment, I still like to build things, to create fresh opportunities, to imagine what might be and what we might become. So it’s especially satisfying to see that we’ve grown, that indeed, the IPRH is thriving and is on the cusp of what I believe is an entirely new and exciting era for the humanities at Illinois. Although the words "growth" and "the humanities" seldom appear together in print these days, here they are, and here are some reasons why: Thanks to funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, I spent the past year organizing and engaging in a series of meetings with the directors of humanities centers from 14 other research universities across the Midwest. Our goal: to plan a set of initiatives that will be at the heart of what we are now calling the "Humanities Without Walls Consortium" (for more on this, see page 4). Having the opportunity to work with this group of creative, talented, and energetic scholars has been a superb experience. Together, we have already learned about the ways we are greater than the sum of our parts, and about the ways we can collectively create what James Duderstadt referred to as "new knowledge ecologies" for the Midwest that are and will be central to 21st-century life. My thanks to Dr. Abby Smith Rumsey, who has provided consulting expertise for the project, and to Janelle Weatherford, Director of Foundation Relations, for her sustained assistance with this project. I’m also grateful to the University of Illinois for its support of our planning efforts over the past academic year. When I asked Chancellor Wise and Dean Watkins to make a leap of faith with us on this project, they leapt. Without their belief in the IPRH, and the generous support of the Mellon Foundation, none of this, including the prospects it forecasts for the humanities on our campus and beyond, would be possible.

Beginning this fall, IPRH will also debut as an institutional partner for Scalar, an innovative digital authoring and publishing platform designed and supported by the Alliance for Networking Visual Culture (ANVC) at the University of Southern California. (For more on our Scalar initiative, see pages 6–7). We are pleased to be one of only three public universities in the nation who have been invited to serve as a testing ground for Scalar. Professor Kevin Hamilton (School of Art + Design) will be leading this initiative for us, and serving as IPRH’s new Coordinator of Digital Scholarly Communication. I hope you’ll join us for some of the Scalar workshops Kevin will organize this year to learn more about the potentials and theoretical underpinnings of this dynamic platform for creating new scholarship in the humanities and arts.

To extend the conversation about shifting theories and modes of scholarly communication, Professor Bonnie Mak (Graduate School of Library and Information Science) will be this year’s IPRH Blog Editor, commissioning and writing essays that examine the notion of "Publication" in its broadest conception.

To mark this year of the "Body/Bodies" (our annual theme for 2013–14), we have partnered with colleagues from the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies (GWS) to produce four lectures that will run throughout the year. My thanks to the selection committee for this series: Professors Teresa Barnes, Karen Flynn, Samantha Frost, Martin Manalansan, Mimi Nguyen, and especially to Professor Chantal Nadeau, Chair of GWS. We are also this year initiating a series of lectures on the Medical Humanities in partnership with the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. Working with Patricia Jones, Beckman’s Associate Director for Research, and Professors Stephanie Hilger, Melissa Littlefield, Rohit Bhargava, and Kara Federmeier, we selected speakers who approach this topic from a range of backgrounds and perspectives in this emerging area of humanities scholarship.

If you are in Chicago in November—or if you can plan to be there—be sure to join us at the Chicago Humanities Festival, where IPRH will be sponsoring Professor Deke Weaver’s (School of Art + Design) performance on November 4th. If you’ve never seen Deke on the stage, this is an opportunity not to be missed, and one you’ll never forget.

Given the success of our "Inside Scoop" events this past year, we’ll be continuing that program for undergraduates.

Professors Mark Leff (History and Odyssey Project) and Rebecca Ginsburg (Educational Policy and Education Justice Project) will continue this new tradition of a close conversation—stimulated by high-quality carbohydrates (pizza and ice cream)—with students from across the university to talk about the importance of the public humanities. And Professor Tara McPherson from the University of Southern California will talk with students this fall about her work developing Scalar and theories of multi-modal scholarship. We’ll also continue to feature the work of our Creative Writing faculty through evening readings at the IPRH. Watch for an announcement about Alex Shakar’s reading to take place on April 8, 2014. Please see our calendar of events and deadlines on pages 14–15 for a full slate of the exciting opportunities ahead.

Raising the visibility of the humanities and humanities-related activities at Illinois is also part of our core mission at the IPRH. To assist us with this important work, Kelly Delahanty has joined our staff as our new Communications Coordinator. Kelly will be enhancing our social media presence, and she’ll be working closely with Stephanie Uebelhoer and Nancy Castro to publicize our events and opportunities in the coming year, as well as the impressive accomplishments of our Illinois humanities faculty. We’re delighted to have her with us. As always, our work is only possible because of the hard work and dedication of IPRH Associate Director Nancy Castro and Office Support Associate Stephanie Uebelhoer.

| T h e H u m a n i t i e s W i t h o u t Wall s | The Humanities Without Walls consortium links the humanities centers at 15 research universities throughout the Midwest and beyond. The 21st century presents a clear and pressing need to collaboratively mobilize the collective resources of the heartland’s institutions of higher education. A consortium of humanities centers can advance innovative and experimental research and pedagogical practices by sharing unevenly distributed resources across institutional walls, and by testing new ideas at scale. Humanities centers can best undertake this work because they are already sites of innovation on university campuses, generating ideas and stimulating new knowledge on campuses through the creation and funding of major initiatives.

With support provided by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, IPRH Director Dianne Harris led three planning meetings that took place over the course of the 2012–13 academic year. Each meeting included the directors of the humanities centers from our 14 consortial partners. Together, the group formulated a set of innovative and experimental initiatives that we plan to pursue to advance education and research in the humanities. In addition, to test the types of collaboration that might be possible across our institutions, two pilot projects were conducted in the course of the year. Performing the Middle Ages was led by Professor Charles Wright, and the Uses of Scale in Literary Study was helmed by Professor Ted Underwood. Please read at right to learn more about their activities. We are very grateful to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for its support of this project. We also thank Dean Ruth Watkins and Chancellor Phyllis Wise for helping to make this work possible.

The IPRH plays a central role in the intellectual and educational life on the U of I campus. Especially for faculty in the Humanities, the program provides an essential space for intellectual exchange, interdisciplinary engagement, and a sense of community.

The second planning meeting followed on the afternoon of 21 April, beginning with a round-table discussion of the performances by all the project members present. (At that meeting, members from the team for medieval music and liturgy discussed with the Notre Dame group their ideas for the Fall 2013 Vespers service.)

In addition to planning and critiquing these live performances, the two meetings were devoted to planning a longer-term performance series embracing multiple genres and cultures, including East and South Asian, Eurasian, Middle Eastern, and European. What emerged from the meetings was a series focused on three thematic rubrics: "The Global Heroic" (such as Japanese Tales of the Heike and European Arthurian romance); "The Performing Book" (that is, how medieval books were themselves "Mankind" Performance (directed by Kimberly Fonzo and Ann Hubert): the devil Titivillus, portrayed by Nick Stanko.

The project members are continuing in very active email discussions to work out the details of performances to be staged and their coordination. In addition to performances of works from the "medieval" period, we will incorporate modern recreation and adaptation of medieval works and themes, including film. Central to our approach is the concept of "reperformance": how modes of performance and conditions of spectatorship change over time and space, from the Middle Ages to the present.

ing part of a project. Researchers notoriously spend most of their time organizing and normalizing the collection itself, before analysis even becomes possible. This project aims to help remove these obstacles to literary analysis conducted at large scales.

The project is led by scholars at the University of Illinois and Notre Dame, who have already shared many of their tools for processing digital text at usesofscale.com and at a symposium in March where faculty, graduate students, and librarians from around the upper Midwest discussed important remaining obstacles. Work has been ongoing in summer 2013.

At Illinois, Ted Underwood is working with graduate and undergraduate students to develop tools that can sort through a million volumes in order to identify the specific page ranges that are lyric poetry, or verse tragedy, or prose fiction. Many volumes are a mosaic of genres (for example, collected poems and plays prefaced by a life of the author), and identifying the passages that actually belong to a given genre is critical for studying genres at scale; we can’t make those divisions by hand in a collection of a million works.

At Notre Dame, Matthew Wilkens is working with four graduate students on two projects. In the first, his group is using natural language processing and GIS to study shifts in the literary use of geographic space across novels published in the United States during the nineteenth century. In the second, the group is examining changes in the usage of terms related to American national identity in a large corpus of literary, legal, and journalistic texts from the same period to trace the long-postulated but never proven emergence of a coherent collective imagination in the wake of the Civil War. Both projects have received additional support from Notre Dame’s Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts.

| Digital Labor and the Future of Scholarship: Exploration Through Practice | Often, our common interests as scholars are also those closest to our hearts as citizens. One of the welcome features of a crossdisciplinary center such as IPRH is the opportunity it affords to collectively address problems that broadly affect our lives as academic workers, as citizens of the same state, stewards of the same systems of knowledge production.

Just such an area of concern has emerged of late around the future of scholarly publishing, multimedia authoring, and digital technologies. This conversation, already underway around campus, is ripe for formal recognition and address as a cross-disciplinary concern.

Whatever the original motivation for one’s initial curiosity about the potentials of digital technology in scholarship, we now share a new common area of concern. The new tools have led us to questions about the very shape of academic labor.

Our campus is poised to take a leadership role in this area, and only needs to provide a gathering place for our currently distributed conversations. This year IPRH will do just that, through the establishment of a new staff position, a series of events and workshops, and a new partnership with a large-scale, multi-institutional design project.

Ubiquitous Technologies, Persistent Questions Kevin Hamilton

A decade or more ago, conversations about new technologies among humanities scholars focused primarily on the potentials of applying advanced computational processes to traditional scholarly research. Indeed, this campus was an early leader in such efforts, which largely relied on then specialized equipment, technical expertise, and labor. Understandably, only a few scholars saw a place for themselves in such work, which quickly found an identity under the banner of the "Digital Humanities."

Soon, new conversations that could find no other home drifted to that tent—explorations not of highly specialized equipment, but of more ubiquitous technologies, and their attendant banal and weighty questions, such as: • If the printed page allows for images, why couldn’t its digital counterpart also include sound files, videos, or interactive maps?

• How do we define individual researchers’ roles in the new collectively authored environments of digital media, with their attendant capabilities for measurement, quantification?

• How do our platforms for production and distribution—old and new—influence academic argumentation?

• Do our approaches to intellectual property adapt in an age of the scanner, the pdf, the global publishing conglomerate, or file-sharing and copy-paste technologies?

• As more of our everyday digital tools move into the "cloud" and off of our own local computer hard drives, what role will universities play in the maintenance of discrete, unique digital repositories?

• How are we to respond to the ways in which "participation" in privately owned (and surveilled) platforms such as Twitter or Facebook have so quickly become de rigueur for emerging academic laborers?

• How do we interface with the new forms emerging from economically-challenged presses and journals (the ebook, the app, the podcast, the "bite-sized" brief or booklet)?

• What publics do our forms of publication serve, construct, or challenge?

S c h o la r ly L a b o r a n d t h e " E v e r y da y D i g i t al" Scholars at work on such questions may very well move into the more computationally-intensive research originally associated with the Digital Humanities—the sort of research made uniquely possible at a place like Illinois. But such a path is in no way a foregone conclusion even for those who identify with the Digital Humanities as a field. For many, the field of DH has simply served as the best place for critical reflection on issues that affect all scholars. Any trained scholar today who employs a consumer-grade computer or handheld device as part of her workflow—any researcher who utilizes the products of Google, Microsoft, Apple or Facebook—contends daily with the influence of new technologies on her own labor and knowledge production.

In fact, we could argue that such commonplace technologies today exert a much greater pull on the shape of academic labor than do the products of advanced computing research. Where researchers employing more specialized computers borrow techniques and labor structures from engineering and the sciences, a computer-savvy researcher in the humanities today is more at sea, subject to the workflows and knowledge structures embedded in each new consumer product.

We should not let the real or illusory barriers to accessing "big data" or advanced computation in our methods dissuade us from taking on the more immediate challenges of navigating "everyday" digital citizenship. Under the banner of the Digital Humanities, there is a lively conversation already underway to this end—one in which Illinois is poised to play a leadership role.

The IPRH was a very welcome reminder at a critical time in my project that scholarship need not be a secluded experience, but a vibrant and engaging exercise.

In the future, IPRH hopes to work with I-CHASS to continue educating scholars at Illinois about the potentials of "highperformance" computing for their research—an area in which Illinois should only continue to excel. Meanwhile, we also have work to do in establishing a critical conversation about the "everyday digital," and this year will see a new concentrated effort in this direction.

Tal k i n g t h r o u g h D o i n g : C r i t i c i s m i n s i t u Foremost in this effort will be a partnership with the Alliance for Networking Visual Culture, an organization that gathered multiple universities, archives and publishing houses to found a conversation about the future of scholarly authorship, publication, and distribution. The primary outcome of this effort is a software platform called Scalar. Illinois and IPRH will join a group operating as part of a Mellon Foundation "implementation grant" to explore Scalar’s potentials and possibilities.

Scalar will likely serve many good purposes in the years to come, and has already won great support and acclaim. In the long term, however, our exploration of this platform will only serve Illinois to the extent that it serves as a place to make specific our shared questions around digital labor and production. With care, and building on the great momentum already established through the work of IPRH and other interdisciplinary units on campus, we can help ensure a community of conscience around the future of the disciplines we steward, challenge, and expand.

Kevin Hamilton is Associate Professor of New Media and Painting in the School of Art + Design, a Dean’s Fellow in the College of Fine and Applied Arts, and Co-Director of the Center for People and Infrastructures in the Coordinated Science Lab. Working largely in collaborative and cross-disciplinary settings, Kevin produces artworks, archives, and scholarship on such subjects as place and memory, history of technology, and state-mediated violence. Recent work has included research and production on cybernetics, race, and the role of film in America’s rise to nuclear power. His self-published graphic novel, A Place in Time, is currently in distribution at Champaign and Urbana area libraries, and he is currently at work on an NEH-funded digital archive for nuclear test films. | A N e w To o l fo r S c h o l a rs, a N e w Pa rt n e rs h i p f o r I P RH | Scalar, an open source software platform, is alternately a presentation program akin to PowerPoint, an archiving tool useful for annotating and organizing media collections, a multi-author text composition tool with rich embedded media capabilities, or a web-based authoring environment for creating multi-linear arguments. Scalar grew out of a collaborative design process that included leading interaction designers, scholars, archivists, publishers and editors. The "look" of a Scalar book derives either from templates (as in the blogging platform WordPress) or from custom style parameters. Among the software’s most striking capacities are a rich suite of visualization tools to allow authors to see the shape of their collections and writing.

Upon its recent public release, Scalar immediately earned an Editors’ Choice award from PC Magazine, where the review cited the platform’s "novelty, accessibility, and capability." Scalar was developed by the Alliance for Networking Visual Culture (ANVC), led by Professor Tara McPherson (University of Southern California), with generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

IPRH has become a partner in the Alliance for Networking Visual Culture. The ANVC seeks to enrich the intellectual potential of the humanities to inform understandings of an expanding array of visual practices as they are reshaped within digital culture, while also creating scholarly contexts for the use of digital media in film, media and visual studies. By working with humanities centers, scholarly societies, and key library, archive, and university press partners, the ANVC is investigating and developing sustainable platforms for publishing interactive and rich media scholarship, including Scalar. In modernist and contemporary fiction, characters feel themselves reduced to automata that function without will or agency—experiences that share much with the writings and case studies of schizophrenics. I trace these ontological confusions to psychological discourses such as psychoanalysis, behaviorism, and cybernetics that reduce human behavior to emergent theories of disembodied information. Finally, I examine how recent theories of "embodied cognition" and disability might reframe our understanding of psychological fiction, narratology, and normative relations between mind and body.

The project aims to reveal the historical and geographical scope of the genre (100 years of peplum films, moving from Italy to transnational production), and bring together three theoretical perspectives of wide interest to the humanities: psychoanalysis (the curious sexuality constructed by peplum films), the "haptic" (how film activates the sense of touch, the ideology of that activation), and the biopolitical (how the peplum links the health and vitality of the state and that of the male body).

"Waterbodies: The Reengineering of Rivers and Communities in the Formation of Modern Japan, 1868–1945"

Abstract: This book project explores ancient construction as a domain for the human body’s emergence as an object of discernment in western art and thought. By way of material and textual evidence, it investigates how tools, machines, and theorized reflections upon these implements shaped the development of canonical images of the human form. The project reveals how constructional processes and principles informed ancient understandings of vision, the graphic envisioning of cosmic order, and the body’s centrality within that order. Conversely, it shows how such evolving ideas changed architecture and heralded the Renaissance invention of design as a process separate from construction.

Abstract: This research project examines three bodies of water in Japan, the people who used them, and the governmental authorities that sought to control both the waters and people from the 1868 Meiji Restoration to end of the Asia Pacific War in 1945. Through an examination of the radical reengineering of three important rivers, I show how people’s somatic interaction with these water bodies and governmental authority changed and argue for a focus on what I call "environmental relations" in order to avoid the limits of reductionist binaries like mind vs. body, nature vs. culture, and state vs. society.

Two of the graduate fellowship recipients—Megan Condis and Pui-Sze Priscilla Tse have been designated IPRH-Nicholson Fellows for 2013–14. The Nicholson Endowment is a gift of Grace W. Nicholson, who pursued undergraduate studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Professor Emeritus John A. Nicholson, a faculty member in the Philosophy Department at Illinois for 33 years. The Nicholson Endowment, which was established in 1999, provides support for the academic programs in LAS and excellence in the study of the humanities on campus.

Megan Condis— IP R H - N i c h o ls o n F e ll o w English "The Politics of Gamers: Bodies and Identity in Digital Culture" Abstract: My project examines popular cultural texts and correspondence between fans and media producers to explain how assumptions about bodies play into hardcore video game culture’s self-definition and how the mainstreaming of gaming affects conceptualizations of embodiment. I explore how gamer identity is policed along racialized, gendered, and sexualized lines, as well as how formerly unrepresented users take advantage of the channels of communication opening up between users and producers to broaden their access to gaming culture. Finally I examine how "gamer logic" re-conceptualizes identities commonly thought of as biologically derived.

C o r e y Fla c k Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese "True Flesh: The Body as Nexus of Community, Identity, and Salvation in Dante’s Commedia" Abstract: Throughout the Commedia, we are continually reminded of the presence of Dante’s body. As a pilgrimage text, the body is central to the poem’s negotiation of Christian theology and of salvation itself, which entered history via Incarnation. My dissertation provides the first comprehensive study of the body within the Commedia. Using modern gender and biopolitical theory, I investigate how, through his own progress to God, Dante maps a radical theory of body within the matrices of community and identity, and posits that the human body is essential to the creation of community, to eliminate difference, and to achieve salvation.

I found that the interdisciplinary perspectives of the diverse workshop participants were particularly valuable, because fellows from a variety of backgrounds and outlooks enabled me to see important significances and limitations of my work in new ways.

The Unreliable Bestiary A series of performances, website, and set of books, The Unreliable Bestiary is an ark of stories about animals, our relationships with them, and the precarious worlds they inhabit. Deke Weaver’s audacious, ambitious goal for the project is to present a full-length performance for each letter of the alphabet, representing a particular endangered animal with an overlay of economy, environment, and history as context. To date, Weaver has created three startling pieces—Monkey, Elephant, and Wolf—and in a performance specially crafted for CHF, a combination of monologue and cinematic video, he presents selections from all three of them.

Deke Weaver is an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with appointments in the Department of Theatre and the School of Art + Design’s New Media Program. Professor Weaver is a writer-performer, designer, and media artist. His interdisciplinary performances and videos have been presented in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Europe, Russia, and the United States in experimental theater, film/ video, dance, solo performance, and broadcast venues such as PBS, Channel 4/U.K., the Sundance Film Festival, the New York Video Festival at Lincoln Center, The Berlin Video Festival, MoMA/NY, the Museum of Contemporary Art/LA, Dixon Place, HERE, PS 122, The Moth, Judson Memorial Church, the Chicago Cultural Center, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and many others including livestock pavilions, national parks, night clubs, bars, backyard sheds and living rooms.

A resident artist at Yaddo, Isle Royale National Park, and HERE, a two-time resident at Ucross, a four-time fellow at the MacDowell Colony, and a three-time recipient of NEA regional film/video grants, Professor Weaver has been awarded commissions, fellowships, and grants from the city of San Francisco, the states of Illinois and New York, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and other public and private foundations.

The Dog and Pony Show The Village Voice once said that Holly Hughes is "hell on heels"—one of the cleverer summaries of her signature blend of theater and provocation. A "professional lesbian" who drove Jesse Helms apoplectic as one of the NEA Four, her work includes Let Them Eat Cake and Preaching to the Perverted, among others. In addition to writing, performing, and touring her work, she is also a professor at the University of Michigan, where she leads the university’s BFA program in interarts performance. Hughes’s newest solo performance work, The Dog and Pony Show (Bring Your Own Pony), offers a poetic and comic meditation on midlife crises in the key of canine.

Kelly is the new Communications Coordinator for both IPRH and I-CHASS, the Institute for Computing in Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Prior to joining IPRH, Kelly worked in the National Center for Supercomputing Applications public affairs office, the Illini Union marketing department, and the digital marketing department of Wilton, Inc. She recently graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a BFA in New Media and a minor in Informatics.​Kelly’s strengths lie in storytelling and making complex ideas more accessible and understandable. When not working, Kelly is busy creating art and stories in a variety of media, ranging from traditional comics to more experimental formats.

A guided insider’s tour of the Latin American Gallery at the Spurlock museum, led by curator Norman Desmond (Anthropology, Emeritus) took place in April 2013. IPRH extends its appreciation to LAS Campus Honors Program, to Penny Soskin, Assistant Dean of LAS, and Wayne Pitard, Director of the Spurlock Museum, for providing the venues and helping to publicize the events.

Memory/Memoir In 2012–13 IPRH also launched a series of events designed to showcase the work of the Illinois Creative Writing faculty, in dialogue with faculty members on our campus. This year’s events were organized around the theme of Memory/Memoir and featured readings and discussion by Alma Gottlieb (Anthropology), Philip Graham (English), Janice Harrington (English), and Harry Liebersohn (History) in the fall; and by LeAnne Howe (English and American Indian Studies), Audrey Petty (English), and Robert Ramirez (Theatre) in February 2013.

| I P RH-M e l l o n P OST -D OC to r a l F e l l o w s 2012–13 | K A R O L INE COOK In 2012–13, Cook continued the productive momentum of her first-year as a second-year IPRH-Mellon PostDoctoral Fellow. Cook finished revisions of her book manuscript,"Forbidden Crossings: Muslims and Moriscos in Colonial Spanish America," in summer 2012 and submitted it to the University of Pennsylvania Press, with which she had an advance contract. Readers’ reports came back in November, and Cook has been hard at work on revisions since.

In fall 2012, Cook taught the Latin America to Independence History survey course for the second time, and in spring 2013 she designed and taught a course on the History of Mexico from 1519, both for the History Department. Throughout Cook’s time at the University of Illinois, several faculty members in the History Department have acted as mentors, displaying a rare generosity in meeting with her to talk about teaching, research, and introducing her work to colleagues in other departments. As a result, Cook had the opportunity to continue to present her work on campus this past academic year. She continued to attend meetings of the Premodern World Group organized by Craig Koslofsky, and in the spring, Cook presented a paper at the Medieval Studies Colloquium. Her presentations have also extended to venues off campus: In April 2013, Cook presented a paper at Northwestern University, at a symposium on The Early Modern Atlantic World: Slavery, Race, Governance.

This fall 2013, Cook will be joining the History Department at Washington State University, as a visiting instructor in a new program with an innovative approach to teaching World History: The Roots of Contemporary Issues.

C A R L A H U S TA K In 2012–13, Hustak taught two courses in the Department of History, and conducted substantial new archival research for her second book project, entitled, "Planting Rhythms: Plant Eugenics, Organic Farming, and Experimental Gardens, 1890–1930." Hustak presented the initial draft of an article entitled, "Manly Birthings: Botany and the 'Art of Breeding' in Creating Bio-Utopias, 1900–1930," to the IPRH Fellows seminar. The valuable interdisciplinary feedback she received in seminar has helped her to revise this piece, which will soon be ready to be submitted to an academic journal for publication.

For her "Planting Rhythms" research, Hustak drew on archival resources at the University of Illinois, making extensive use of the Carnation and Snap Dragon Records, the Experiment Records, the Joseph Blair Papers, and the Floriculture Publications, and has currently begun to peruse the Botanists’ Correspondence and the Crop Production collections. The rich archival sources on plant-breeding at the university archives have yielded some surprising research findings that have helped Hustak to trace out new trajectories for her second book.

In addition to participating in the Fellows Seminar and beginning new research, Hustak also revised articles for publication. Two of her articles have been accepted for publication: The first article, "Inventing the Female Self in Greenwich Village, 1900-1930: Mabel Dodge’s Encounter with Science and Spirituality" is a forthcoming publication in the journal Subjectivity. The second article, "Stories Rocks Can Tell: Marie Stopes’s Evolutionary Narratives of Plant Sex in the 'Fern Ledges,'" is a forthcoming publication in Gender, Place and Culture: a feminist geography journal. Hustak also has a book review of Chris Renwick’s British Sociology’s Lost Biological Roots pending publication in the Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences. In addition to these pending publications, Hustak is completing a book manuscript, "Radical Intimacies: Affective Potential and the Politics of Love in the Transatlantic Sex Reform Movement, 1900-1930," which will be submitted for consideration for publication in August 2013.

In 2013–14, Hustak will teach two courses at Illinois, one on U.S. Gender History to 1877 (HIST 285), and one on the Cultural History of Emotions in the U.S. (HIST 200D), and will be co-organizing the IPRH spring symposium on "Ecological Bodies" (May 1–2, 2014).

D U NC A N KEEN A N - J ONE S In 2012–3, Keenan-Jones has had a review accepted for publication, made numerous presentations at conferences and other venues, and taught two classes in the Department of Classics—one fall undergraduate lecture course and a spring graduate Latin seminar. He also gave a guest lecture entitled "Geoarchaeological Analysis of Travertine" for a graduate Anthropology seminar (ANTH 499SA Archaeometry–Scientific Methods in Archaeology).

Keenan-Jones’ review of Brian Campbell’s Rivers and the Power of Ancient Rome was accepted for publication in early 2014 by The Classical Review. A further article, on the use of limestone (or travertine) deposits for the reconstruction of the history and functioning of the aqueducts of ancient Rome, entitled "The Hierarchical Nature of Travertine Deposition in Ancient Roman Aqueducts" is being prepared in collaboration with geologists and civil engineers from the Universities of Illinois and Fribourg, Switzerland. This has arisen from Keenan-Jones’ IPRH research project: "Water, Society and Environment in Ancient Rome and its Hinterland." Keenan-Jones has also been converting his PhD thesis into a monograph. An article from Keenan-Jones’ dissertation, provisionally entitled "The Water Supply of Pompeii, the AD 79 Eruption of Vesuvius and the Aqua Augusta" is also being prepared.

Keenan-Jones was invited to give lectures on "Reconstructing the History of Ancient Rome’s Greatest Aqueduct," as part of the Central Illinois Chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America public lecture series on the 7th March 2013; and on "Roman Reshaping of the Hydrologic Landscape: Prefiguring Modernism?" at Wabash College, on the 20th September 2012. He also presented papers at two conferences: "Ancient Roman Aqueducts as a Geoarchaeological Laboratory to Understand Travertine Formation", at the Cold Water Carbonate Mounds in Shallow and Deep Time (COCARDE) European Research Network Workshop and Field Seminar 2012, Nördlingen, Germany, October, 15–19, 2012; and "Hierarchical Stratigraphy of Travertine Deposition in Ancient Roman Aqueducts," at the Archaeological Institute of America annual meeting in Seattle in January 2013. This research was also presented in a poster, of which Keenan-Jones was lead author, at the School of Earth, Society and the Environment (SESE) research review and the Institute for Genomic Biology Fellows Symposium.

She also received an American Institute for Sri Lankan Studies Research Fellowship, which permitted her to visit Sri Lanka to conduct new research. This research was presented in two papers during the academic year: "Dancing as a Demonstration of Peace: The role of Bharata Natyam Dance in "Peace Concerts" in Post-War Sri Lanka" at the Annual Conference on South Asia at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in October 2012, and "Performing Peace: Dance Practice & Reconciliation in Post-War Sri Lanka" at the IPRH Symposium on Performance and Globalization in April 2013.

| t h e o dy s s e y p r o j e c t | The Odyssey Project completed its seventh year in spring 2013. Since fall 2006, the Odyssey Project has offered a free, college-accredited course in the humanities to members of the Champaign-Urbana community who fall at or near the poverty level.

The yearlong course offers students intensive study in philosophy, art history, literature, U.S. history, and critical thinking and writing. Classes taught by University of Illinois faculty and graduate students takes place every Tuesday from September to May in the seminar room at IPRH. Tuition is free, as are books, transportation, and childcare.

Frederick E. Hoxie, Swanlund Chair and Professor of History, was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) in April 2013. The AAAS is one of the nation’s most prestigious honorary societies, and a leading center for independent policy research. In October 2012, Professor Hoxie was also honored with the Western History Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in American Indian History. He was recognized for his years of advancing the field of American Indian history, through publications, commitment to helping Native and other students in the field, and through service that includes working with tribal communities. Professor Hoxie has published more than a dozen books on U.S. Indian policy, the history of Native American communities, and the meaning of indigenous history in modern society. His most recent book is This Indian Country: American Indian Activists and the Place They Made (Penguin, 2012).

Evening’s Empire (Cambridge, 2011) by Craig Koslofsky (History, IPRH Fellow 2013–14) was cited by Atlantic magazine as one of the 15 best books reviewed by the magazine or published in 2012. The book was reviewed in the April 2012 issue of Atlantic magazine. Evening’s Empire was also named the Longman-History Today Book of the Year for 2011 in January 2012. One criterion for the award is accessibility for the general reader of history.

LeAnne Howe (American Indian Studies and English) won a USA Ford Fellowship in Literature from United States Artists.

The organization honors 50 of America’s finest artists each year with individual fellowship awards of $50,000. In 2012, Professor Howe was also the winner of the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers Circle of the Americas.

Bruno Nettl, Professor Emeritus of Music and Anthropology, is one of four international musicians who received the inaugural Taichi Traditional Music Award, given by the China Conservatory and the Taichi Traditional Music Foundation.

Professor Nettl was chosen for his achievements in the field that he helped establish: ethnomusicology, the study of social and cultural aspects of music in local and global contexts. The prize recognizes individuals or social groups who have made "outstanding and original contribution toward the performance, inheritance, theoretical studies or dissemination of traditional music." Professor Nettl has also been awarded the Charles Homer Haskins Prize, presented annually to a distinguished humanist by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). This honor includes a cash award and asks the recipient to deliver the Haskins Prize Lecture reflecting on "a lifetime of work as a scholar and an institution builder" at the ACLS annual meeting in May 2014.

Tere O’Connor (Dance) has received a Doris Duke Artist Award for 2013. Funding from the Doris Duke Artist Award will allow him to both explore projects that connect writing, teaching, experiencing dance, mentoring, and advocacy and move farther away from the concept of authorship toward dances that are structured to allow for external ideas from the performers and the audience to shape them. The award includes an unrestricted grant of $250,000 over three to five years, $25,000 toward a retirement account, plus the possibility of additional funds for outreach and

audience engagement. The ten-year Doris Duke Artist Award program is designed to "recognize the potential of individual artists and insure their future viability."

David W. Plath, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and Asian Studies, received the 2013 Association for Asian Studies (AAS) Award for Distinguished Contributions to Asian Studies. Plath was the leader of the Media Production Group, for which he has designed, scripted, hosted, narrated, edited, directed, and often filmed productions. In 2000, the Society for East Asian Anthropology established the David Plath Media Award, given biennially for the best new educational media project on Asian societies and cultures. The 2013 Distinguished Contributions to Asian Studies award celebrates his long engagement and many contributions to teaching about Japan at all levels and through many media.

Karen Fresco (French, Medieval Studies & GWS) was named Officier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques. This prestigious title is awarded to members of the international community for outstanding contributions to French pedagogy, scholarship, and culture, as well as to the French language. L’Ordre des Palmes Académiques was instituted by Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte on March 19, 1808.

Mahir Şaul (Anthropology) received Utne Reader magazine’s Visionaries Award for his role as a "debunker of African stereotypes." For 15 years, Şaul has taught a course on African film and society, emphasizing their vast intellectual and cultural accomplishments. Last winter, he introduced the first African film series to Instanbul Museum of Modern Art audiences.

Jennifer Monson (Dance and IPRH Fellow 2013–14) was honored at the Movement Research Gala on May 13, 2013.

Movement Research serves as a laboratory for exploration and experimentation in movement-based art forms while capturing the diversity of artists and audiences. Each year, choreographers, dancers, and other motion-centered innovators are recognized for their contributions.

Lisa Lucero (Anthropology) was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Election as a fellow is an honor bestowed upon members of the association by their peers. Lucero was honored for "distinguished service in the field of archaeology, with emphasis on the role of water management in Maya society and its contemporary implications."

Outgoing IPRH Advisory Committee Member Stephanie Foote (English and GWS) has launched Resilience: A Journal of Environmental Humanities, with co-editor Stephanie LeMenager, an Associate Professor of English at University of California, Santa Barbara. A digital, peer-reviewed journal of the Environmental Humanities, Resilience provides a forum for scholars from across humanities disciplines to speak to one another about their shared interest in environmental issues, and to plot out an evolving conversation about what the humanities contributes to living and thinking sustainably in a world of dwindling resources. Volumes will be published in digital form by the University of Nebraska Press. The journal can be visited at www.resiliencejournal.org.

Book Prizes Rebecca Ginsburg (EPOL, Landscape Architecture, and Director EJP) won the 2012 Abbott Lowell Cummings Prize from the Vernacular Architecture Forum for her book At Home With Apartheid: The Hidden Landscapes of Domestic Service in Johannesburg (Virginia, 2011). The prize recognizes a significant contribution to the study of vernacular architecture and cultural landscapes of North America.

Paul Hardin Kapp (Architecture) and Paul J. Armstrong (Architecture, emeritus), received the 2013 Historic Book Preservation Prize for SynergiCity: Reinventing the Postindustrial City (Illinois, 2013), which they co-edited. Presented by the University of Mary Washington Center for Historic Preservation, the yearly award goes to the book selected by a jury "for the most significant contribution to the intellectual vitality of historic preservation" in the United States.

Erik McDuffie (African American Studies, IPRH Fellow 2010–11) received the Wesley-Logan Prize from the American Historical Association for his book Sojourning for Freedom: Black Women, American Communism, and the Making of Black Left Feminism (Duke, 2011). The Wesley-Logan Prize in African diaspora history is jointly sponsored by the American Historical Association and the Association for the Study of African American Life & History, and is is awarded annually for an outstanding book on some aspect of the history of the dispersion, settlement and adjustment, and/or return of peoples originally from Africa.

Junaid Rana (Asian American Studies, IPRH Fellow 2005–06) received the Association of Asian American Studies (AAAS) Book Award for the Social Sciences, for Terrifying Muslims: Race and Labor in the South Asian Diaspora (Duke, 2011). The award was conferred at the AAAS Annual Conference in Seattle in April 2013.

Leslie Reagan (History and IPRH Fellow 2011–12 & 2001–02) received the Arthur J. Viseltear Award for her book Dangerous Pregnancies: Mothers, Disabilities, and Abortion in Modern America (California, 2010). The annual award is given by the Medical Care Section of the American Public Health Association to a historian for outstanding contributions to the history of public health.

David Roediger (History and IPRH Fellow 2012–13) and Elizabeth Esch have been awarded the International Labor History Association (ILHA) Book of the Year Award for 2012 for The Production of Difference: Race and the Management of Labor in U.S. History (Oxford, 2012).

Daniel Schneider (Urban and Regional Planning) received the George Perkins Marsh Prize, for Hybrid Nature: Sewage Treatment and the Contradictions of the Industrial Ecosystem (MIT, 2011). Bestowed by the American Society for Environmental History, the prize is awarded to the best book in the field.

Alex Shakar (English) was named a winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for fiction for his novel Luminarium, which focuses on the roles of technology and spirituality in shaping people’s reality.

Yasemin Yildiz, (Germanic Languages and Literatures) received the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for her book Beyond the Mother Tongue: The Postmonolingual Condition (Fordham, 2011). The Modern Language Association of America (MLA) awards this prize biennially for an outstanding scholarly work on the linguistics or literatures of the Germanic languages. Professor Yildiz received the prize in January at the MLA annual convention in Boston. Professor Yildiz received an IPRH Prize for Research in the Humanities in spring 2012.

Article and Dissertation Prizes: Matthew Sakiestewa Gilbert (American Indian Studies) was awarded a 2013 Spur Award by the Western Writers of America, in the category of Best Western Short Nonfiction, for "Marathoner Louis Tewanima and the Continuity of Hopi Running, 1908–1912," which appeared in the Autumn 2012 issue of Western Historical Quarterly. Western Writers of America, Inc., was founded in 1953 to promote the literature of the American West and bestows Spur Awards for distinguished writing in the Western field.

Kristin Hoganson (History), who will deliver the 2013 IPRH Distinguished Lecture in the Humanities this fall, received the 2012 Ray Allen Billington Prize from the Western History Association for her article, "Meat in the Middle: Converging Borderlands in the U.S. Midwest, 1865–1900," published in the Journal of American History. The association is dedicated to promoting the study of the North American West in its varied aspects and broad sense.

Michael Rothberg (English, Comparative and World Literature, Germanic Languages and Literatures, Program in Jewish Culture and Society, and IPRH Fellow 2003–04) was recognized by the International Society for the Study of Narrative (ISSN) for his essay, "Progress, Progression, Procession: William Kentridge and the Narratology of Transitional Justice," which was selected as the best of the year’s publications in the journal Narrative, published by the ISSN. The article appeared in the January 2012 issue of Narrative.

Lindsay Russell (English) was awarded the 2013 Rhetoric Society of America Dissertation Award for her dissertation, "Women in the English Language Dictionary" (University of Washington, co-chairs Anis Bawarshi and Colette Moore). The award recognizes the best of the previous year’s doctoral dissertations in the field of rhetoric and rhetorical studies. Professor Russell joined the Illinois faculty in fall 2012.

Matthew Thibeault (Music Education, IPRH Fellow 2012–13) received the Outstanding Emerging Researcher Award from the Center for Music Education Research at the University of South Florida. The award honors music education researchers at an early stage of their careers who are producing high-quality research. Professor Thibeault’s paper, "The Shifting Locus of Musical Experience From Performance to Recording to New Media: Some Implications for Music Education," will be published in the center’s journal and republished in a book.

significant funding to Illinois faculty: the IPRH Event Grants Program.

The IPRH invites proposals for funding a public event (or series of events) that will be of interest to faculty and students in the humanities, arts, and humanistic social sciences. Graduate students may also apply for these awards with faculty sponsorship.

Please consult the IPRH website in the coming year for the 2014–15 application guidelines.

Event Grants: Each application cycle, awards will be made in the amount of $1,000 to $3,000 each.

Grants may be used as co-sponsorship funds for a conference/symposium, lecture, performance, speaker series, or other equivalent public presentation of humanities scholarship. Grantees will be selected through a competitive review of applications by members of an ad hoc committee. IPRH accepts without prejudice applications for projects that were not funded in the first 2013–14 Event Grants cycle. Criteria for selection include: • the intellectual content of the proposed event • the feasibility of the plans • the cross-disciplinary value of the event • the potential appeal to the campus and broader scholarly communities The proposed event will ideally take place during the 2013–14 academic year, but must be scheduled no later than October 2014.

Terms of Award: Grantees will be responsible for venue, travel, hotel, and meal arrangements for their events.

Event organizers must coordinate event dates with IPRH, to help insure there are no competing IPRH events. IPRH will help publicize Event Grant events. The IPRH name must be included in all publicity materials.

Application Instructions: Applicants must submit the following materials to the IPRH by 5:00 p.m. on the day of the deadline.

1. A proposal narrative of no more than two pages that incorporates the following information: A description of the proposed event (including proposed speakers/presenters and a simple budget).

A rationale for the event, including its scholarly significance and the benefits of holding the event at Illinois.

2. A one-page CV for each member of the project’s Steering Committee.

Please submit all materials (compiled as a single PDF file) to the IPRH at iprh@illinois.edu by the deadline date. Application materials should be single-spaced, in a 12-point font, with one-inch margins.

From fellowship awards that provide release time and stipends, to support for reading groups that investigate matters central to the humanities, to conferences and symposia that disseminate humanities scholarship to wide academic and general audiences, IPRH is committed to the support and advancement of humanities research in the broadest sense.

The IPRH Prizes for Research in the Humanities allow us to celebrate excellence in humanities scholarship, and we are pleased to solicit submissions and nominations for the 2013–14 academic year. These prizes recognize outstanding humanities research at the University of Illinois, with awards given at the undergraduate, graduate, and faculty levels. The awards will be presented at a reception in late April 2014. (For more information about the winners for 2012–13, see page 27.) Submissions are invited from scholars in all sectors of the university with focus on the humanities and humanities-inflected research.

Eligibility: The awards are open to all full-time U of I students and faculty.

Application deadline: Friday, March 14, 2014 at 5:00 p.m.

Submission procedures: All submissions must be accompanied by a completed nomination form, which can be downloaded from the IPRH website. The submissions must contain NO references to the applicant’s name or other identifying details. Submissions that do not follow these guidelines will be disqualified from consideration.

I learned an immense amount about teaching from observing the different styles of questioning and commenting issued from the obviously very skilled instructors who also happened to be fellows. The narrative statement should explain how the proposed project would make a contribution to the applicant’s research and advance the larger field of study; how the project would articulate with one of the four designated subject areas; and the anticipated outcomes of the proposed research.

Applicants must address why the proposed research can be undertaken successfully at the University of Illinois, and should include details about programs, individual scholars, and resources at the U of I that would enrich the project.
