Is bliain ceillúradh speisialta í seo do IPPN agus seans chun breathnú siar ar a bhfuil bainte amach agus ag an am chéanna seans féachaint don todhchaí agus conas na deiseanna agus na dúshláin atá romhainn a bhainistiú. Our conference this year is aptly themed ‘Back to the Future’. It affords us the chance to reflect on the tremendous work done on behalf of school leaders over the past 20 years and to acknowledge and thank the many people who have contributed to the story so far, including our nine previous Presidents, all of whom are with us this year. It also allows us to look at what are the present challenges and where more will arise into the future. Our programme of keynote speakers and seminars cover the areas we have heard you, the principals, talk about and we hope that everyone leaves with something useful from your two days and nights with us. Our Founding President, Jim Hayes, opens our conference. It is an honour to have a man whose vision and passion for supporting school leaders was vital in the establishment of IPPN in 2000. Following on from last year’s conference where the theme was ‘Sustainable Leadership’, Karen Edge carried out significant work for IPPN on the subject and will report on her findings as we look to sustain school leadership into the future. Former school principal Viv Grant developed a deep interest in approaches for supporting the emotional and psychological well-being of school leaders. As an Executive Coach, Viv now works extensively with head teachers and school leaders, helping them to overcome the challenges of their roles, so that they are able to maintain their humanity, joy, love for the profession and the communities they serve. Dr Joan Kiely of Marino Institute will address the topic of parental engagement in their children’s learning with a focus on homework. Dr Pádraig Ó Duibhir of Dublin City University will talk about the teaching of Irish and exemptions. Our Leadership Pathways sessions have proven to be tremendously popular and are now in their third year. The Pathways now cater for principals at all stages along the leadership continuum. Your feedback last year strongly endorsed this CPD and we hope you will be equally happy with this year’s offerings. Our Principalmeet is an ‘ideas burst’ and facilitated by our IPPN Board member, Ger Ruane. Our seminars this year are wide-ranging, including the new PIEW model, Dignity in the Workplace, Dealing with Challenging

Behaviour, Curricular Change, Communication, Engaging with Parents, School Gardening and many more. Master of Ceremonies Anton Savage will once more bring his calm self-assurance, professionalism and a tincture of ‘divilment’ to proceedings. I would like once again to pay special tribute to those who have made this conference happen: particularly the Venue Committee - namely Padraig McCabe, John Williams, Ann McQuillan & Carol Burke-Heneghan; IPPN’s Board of Directors and National Council, who are the driving force in IPPN; and our very professional IPPN Support Office staff. I would particularly like to welcome our newest staff members Nora Peters, David Buckley and Maeve O’Mahony to their first conference with IPPN. I also wish to thank the staff of Citywest for looking after us so well once again this year. Anton Savage Anton is currently Director of The Communications Clinic. Previously General Manager Carr Communications. Head of Public Relations Carr Communications. Anton has advised clients ranging from Cabinet Ministers, the CEO’s and Chairmen of some of Ireland’s largest PLC’s through to members of the Catholic Heirarchy and CEO’s of global charities. Anton has lectured in NUIG, Smurfit Business School and The Irish Defence Forces Command and Staff School.

He has been a columnist with Sunday Independent, freelance contributor to the Irish Independent, Irish Daily Mail, Irish Mail on Sunday, and The Herald and has contributed to Today with Pat Kenny, the Marian Finucane Show, the Dave Fanning Show, Primetime, Ireland AM, Seoige, Tonight with Vincent Browne, The Last Word and The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show. Dublin Gospel Choir Dublin Gospel Choir (DGC) is a group of performers with a shared love of music and the joy it can bring. Versatile, professional, passionate and vibrant, they uplift and energise with powerful voices and rich harmonies whether they are performing as a small ensemble group or full 40-piece choir. Weekly electronic bulletin informing school leaders of current issues within education and providing professional guidance, from FAQs on circular releases, to topical issues relating to leadership and management.

Support Groups Local Support Groups have proven to be among the most effective forms of support available to school leaders. They are the only meetings that will actually relieve school leaders’ workload. Members have nothing to prepare for the meeting, are not ‘performing’ at the meeting and do not leave with a ‘To Do’ list. They will, however, leave the meeting feeling genuinely supported. Support Groups for Deputy Principals are now available in association with Education Centres.

Continuous Professional Development Each year, IPPN hosts national and regional professional development events for school leaders. These offer an opportunity to hear fresh thinking from national and international figures in education, participate in stimulating workshops and network with colleagues. Notifications of national events such as conferences and one-day seminars are issued via TextaParent app, E-scéal, email and/or text message. Jim Hayes IPPN Founding President

Jim Hayes retired in 2006 after spending over 35 years in education, 31 years of which were spent as a teaching/administrative Primary Principal in Cork.

courses for teachers for many years. He also taught in the Irish summer college, Coláiste na Mumhan, Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh for a number of years.

He received his primary education in Scoil Chríost Rí Convent Infant School and Scoil Chríost Rí Boys Primary School before attending Coláiste Chríost Rí and St. Finbarr’s College, Farranferris Secondary Schools. He studied in St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, St. Patrick’s College Drumcondra and University College Cork.

Along with fellow Principals, he helped organise the first National Conference for Primary Principals – held in Cork - in 1994. Jim was a ministerial appointee on the Department of Education and Science Working Group on the Role of The Primary Principal in 1999. He became the founding President of IPPN in 2000.

He taught in Scoil Padre Pio, Churchfield and Scoil Barra, Beaumont. He was subsequently appointed the founding Principal of Scoil Mharcuis, The Glen and later Scoil Oilibhéir, Ballyvolane. He designed and delivered

Páiric Clerkin

CEO of the Irish Primary Principals’ Network

Páiric was educated in St. Vincent’s CBS Primary and Secondary Schools, Glasnevin, and obtained his teaching degree from St. Patrick’s College. His first teaching post was in St. Francis Xavier SNS, Dublin 15. In 2001, Páiric was appointed as the founding Principal of St. Patrick’s National School, Diswellstown in Dublin 15. He served initially as a teaching principal, and in 2003 became an administrative principal, following rapid expansion of the school. His sixteen years of experience as principal, close collaboration with his principal colleagues in Dublin 15 and his engagement with IPPN over a number of years heightened his appreciation and understanding of the complex challenges faced by school leaders in their diverse educational settings.

Páiric was an active member of IPPN Dublin for several years and served as chairperson from 2007 to 2010. In 2009, he was elected to the IPPN Board of Directors, and was appointed Treasurer in 2015. He presented a number of workshops at IPPN annual conferences and delivered CPD modules at IPPN County Network meetings, also representing IPPN on the ‘Education Matters’ editorial team. During his tenure on the Board, Páiric initiated a pilot project to ascertain the feasibility of remote fulltime administrative support for a cluster of teaching principals of small schools, which is currently being expanded. Páiric was appointed as CEO of IPPN in 2017, succeeding the first CEO Seán Cottrell, who had served from the inception of the organisation in 2000.

Dr Karen Edge

Reader, UCL Institute of Education and former Pro Vice Provost (International) at University College London Dr Karen Edge is Reader in Educational Leadership at University College London (UCL) Institute of Education and served as Pro-Vice Provost (International) until March 2019. Karen has conducted research in over 30 countries and is currently leading a 7-country study of teacher motivation. Karen has worked with the International Confederation of Principals (ICP), of which IPPN is a member. She presented at numerous international conferences, acted on the board of advisors for the International School Leadership (Ontario) and ICSEI (International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement). Karen has also presented at CSL events in relation to her research. She has done extensive work in Scotland and Wales in relation to school leadership.

Damian White IPPN President

Damian has been principal of Scoil Shinchill, Killeigh, Co. Offaly since 1994. He is a native of the neighbouring parish of KilcormacKilloughey. He graduated from Mary Immaculate College, Limerick in 1987 and taught in Scoil Cholmcille, Kells, Co Meath, Scoil Treasa, Donore Avenue and St. Brigid’s Castleknock before returning to Offaly to take up his present position. He is a founder member of IPPN and was a member of the IPPN Board of Directors until he began his role as IPPN President in September 2019. Damian was elected IPPN Deputy President/President-elect in June 2017. Damian has held numerous positions in IPPN, including National Treasurer and, for many years, he was an advisor with the Leadership Support service as well as Editor of Leadership+. His regular article for the publication provides a colourful and insightful perspective on life as a school principal. His articles have been published in principals’ magazines in a number of countries, as well

as in the programme for the International Confederation of Principals (ICP) in Toronto. His play ‘A Triumph of Allsorts’, based on the events surrounding The 1916 Easter Rising, was produced in several schools across the country in 2016. He had co-responsibility for the development of the Trade Exhibition at the annual IPPN conference for many years. He is a trained mentor with CSL, the Centre for School Leadership. Damian also spent 7 years anchoring a weekend sports show on Midlands 103. He is a keen historian and has been involved in the production of several books in his local area. He is currently Chairman of the GAA’s History and Commemorations Committee. He has trained many GAA teams in his local club over the years and has served on the Offaly County Board as Children’s Officer. He recently served as Chairman of his local Kilcormac – Killoughey GAA club. His wife Marguerite is also a school principal. They have 3 children - Emily, Sarah and Liam.

Viv Grant

Executive Coach and Director of Integrity Coaching, London Viv has been in the education profession for over thirty years. She is a former primary head teacher and over twenty years ago was one of the youngest heads in the country to turn around a failing primary school. She has been a lead trainer and consultant for a number of educational training bodies, including the Department for Education, the National College, The London Centre for Leadership in Learning at the Institute of Education and the NUT. Viv was a contributing author to the 2011 publication “Mentoring and Coaching in Schools” and in 2014, she published her first book, “Staying A Head: The Stress Management Secrets of Successful School Leaders.”

BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour, talking about her work and the role coaching plays in helping school leaders to excel. Dr. Joan Kiely

Dean of Education at Marino Institute of Education, Dublin Dr. Joan Kiely is Dean of Education at Marino Institute of Education, Dublin where she is responsible for the management of the B.Ed programme and the B.Sc programme in Early Childhood Education. Joan also leads the Masters in Early Childhood Education at Marino, a programme that has nurtured and developed educational leaders and academics in the sphere of early years’ education in recent years. Joan worked as a primary school teacher in North County Dublin for twenty years and then as a teacher educator for fifteen years. Research interests include supporting parents to develop their children’s literacy in the home, play in the early years, children’s oral language development and early years’ pedagogy. Joan has designed and taught numerous professional development courses for teachers on the subject of play and oral language development, on both face-to-face and online courses. She has also written course material for the new Primary Language Curriculum in Ireland (2015).

Joan has worked with children, parents and teachers in different enriching educational contexts, one of those contexts being The Storytime Project (2010 to present day), a dialogic story-reading initiative to empower and support parents in developing their children’s oral language through story-reading. Joan has spoken about her work on The Storytime Project at academic conferences throughout Europe as well as here in Ireland. The current research project, and the focus of the talk at the IPPN Principals’ Conference, is Parental involvement, engagement and partnership in their children’s learning during the primary school years. The research is a collaborative project with Dr. Leah O’Toole (Maynooth University), Dr. Maja Haals Brosnan (Marino Institute of Education), Emma O’Brien (Marino Institute of Education), Cliona O’Keeffe (St. Nicholas Montessori College) and Dr. Claire Marie Dunne (Marino Institute of Education). Findings and recommendations arising from the research will be shared, with a particular focus on children’s homework.

Professor Pádraig Ó Duibhir Deputy Dean of the DCU Institute of Education

Professor Pádraig Ó Duibhir is a former primary school principal and Registrar of St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra. Currently, he is Deputy Dean of the DCU Institute of Education and Director of SEALBHÚ, the DCU Research Centre for the Learning and Teaching of Irish. His major teaching and research interests lie in learning Irish as a second language and learning through the medium of Irish. His 2018 monograph, Immersion Education: Lessons from a Minority Language Context, explored language attainment in young learners in Irishmedium education.

Creating the Space to Lead – Establishing your Credibility as a School Leader This session will explore the reality of establishing your credibility as a new school leader, through the lens of the Quality Framework for Leadership and Management. MARIA CAESAR Maria Caesar works as an Associate with PDST on the Leadership Team. Maria qualified from St Patrick’s College of Education in Dublin in 2003. She completed a Masters in Education in University College Dublin in 2008, having completed a research thesis on the theme of parental involvement in the Irish school context. In 2008, Maria became principal of a new start up school, Wexford Educate Together NS. Maria has worked with PDST and ILSA in facilitating CPD for teachers and principals. Maria continues her role as teaching principal in Wexford ETNS and has a special interest in the areas of Leadership and Inclusion.

JACK DURKAN M.Ed Jack was Principal in Togher Boys’ School until 2016 when he retired to take up a position with IPPN’s Leadership Support Team. Jack completed his B. Ed degree in Mary Immaculate College and holds a Master’s Degree in School Leadership and School Management from the University of Hull. He is an Associate on the PDST Leadership Team working mainly on the Misneach Programme. He is a Lecturer and Tutor on the Maynooth University Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership & Management Programme (Future Leaders Programme). He is also a member of the CSL Mentor Training Team. He is a trained Relationship Counsellor and a qualified Executive Coach and Mentor. He is presently Chairperson BOM of Blarney St CBS in Cork.

Ed in the University of Limerick. Focusing on the area of middle management in primary schools. Trained as a mentor for Newly Appointed Principals with IPPN and CSL. Taught in Gaelscoil Dhroichead na Banndan and St. Clare’s Girls National School, Kenmare, prior to being appointed as a teaching Principal in Kilcummin N.S., Co. Kerry, in 2010. Currently a member of the Tralee Education Centre Management Committee. Interests include Gaeilge, mindfulness and wellbeing. Completed ToTs Gaeilge training and delivered seminars at the Tralee Education Centre in this area. As part of the ToTs training, a multi-class network was established and organised by Gillian for a number of years. An ETB adult education tutor (Gaeilge). Trained as a Mental Health Awareness Initiative facilitator with Jigsaw. Weaving Wellbeing summer course facilitator.

DONAL KERINS Donal Kerins taught in Midleton CBS for 21 years and was Principal of Bunscoil Rinn an Chabhlaigh in Cobh, Co. Cork for the past 19 years. Donal has been trained as a Mentor with NIPT and has a passionate interest in the development of capacity in teaching staff as the prime means to improve the quality of teaching and learning in schools. Donal has worked with IPPN’s Leadership Support Team since 2016 and has contributed to Leadership+ and E-scéal. He is an avid cyclist and walker and has completed the Tour de Munster and Camino trails.

FINBARR HURLEY Finbarr studied for his B. Ed in Mary Immaculate College and qualified as a primary school teacher in 1994. He taught in Cork city for 7 years before being seconded to the European Schools. Whilst in Brussels, Finbarr was the Pedagogical and Primary Coordinator, with responsibility for scope and sequence of curriculum and consolidation of teaching and learning across 8 national language sections. Finbarr spent 2 years in Doha, Qatar as deputy principal of a large international school. There, he and his team implemented enquiry-based methodologies so as to further engage the pupils in their learning. He was then re-seconded to the European Schools as Principal of the European School of Karlsruhe in Germany. For the past 4 years, Finbarr has been principal of St. Columba’s BNS in Douglas, Cork. Finbarr is a present board member of the Board of Directors of IPPN. He is a facilitator for the NIPT workshops to newly qualified teachers. Finbarr has facilitated Leadership Pathway Seminars at conference as well as seminars at county network level and national council level. He participated as a mentor and “CARA” on the CSL Mentoring programme.

GILLIAN HAMILTON Gillian was appointed as Strategic Director when the roles of the Scottish College for Educational Leadership (SCEL) transferred to Education Scotland on 01 April 2018. Gillian has responsibility for Professional Learning and Leadership, as well as for Organisational Development within Education Scotland. Gillian has also undertaken responsibility for Corporate Services and Governance until the end of March 2020 when this will be further reviewed. Prior to the transfer, Gillian was the first Chief Executive of SCEL at its inception in 2014. Gillian has worked in Scottish education for 28 years and has held posts as a Primary Teacher, Senior Teacher, Deputy Head Teacher and Head Teacher in schools in Glasgow, North and East Ayrshire. Gillian was Head of Educational Services at GTC Scotland for three years before becoming Chief Executive where she led the revision of the Professional Standards and the pilot programmes of Professional Update, which was rolled out nationally in April 2014. She has been a member of a number of national educational groups with a focus on professional learning and leadership. She is currently a member of the Strategic Board for Teacher Education and the Head Teacher Recruitment working group.

ALISON ALLAN Alison is a Lead specialist within the Professional Learning and Leadership directorate at Education Scotland. Alison is currently leading nationally on Scotlandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Excellence in Headship programme, as well as supporting Leadership and Professional Learning across the South West Regional Improvement Collaborative. Alison is currently seconded to Education Scotland and her substantive post is with North Ayrshire Council, where she is employed as a Senior Manager within the Education and Youth Employment team. Alison has responsibility for line managing fourteen Primary and Secondary schools, as well as having overall responsibility for Professional Learning and Leadership across the Education directorate and the 65 North Ayrshire schools and Early Years Centres. Alison originally worked in the Leisure and Tourism industry, before moving into Education. She has worked in Scottish education for 28 years and has held posts as a Secondary English Teacher, FE and HE Lecturer and Senior Lecturer, Head of Department and Faculty, Curriculum Director and Deputy Chief Executive in educational establishments across Scotland. Alison also worked in India for 6 months as an educational ambassador. Alison has been a member of a number of national educational groups including the Scottish teams World Skills steering committee, Scottish College for Educational Leadership (SCEL) Into Headship steering group, GTCS professional update steering group, Scottish Government DYW skills group, GTCS revised professional standards, Scottish Government SNCT Career Pathways Headship and Beyond Working.

Reducing and Managing Behaviour that Challenges A presentation outlining research-based practical resources and strategies to assist school staff in reducing and managing behaviour that challenges in the classroom and wider school environment.

EDEL HORAN Edel Horan is an Advisor for the NCSE. Edel is a seconded primary school teacher from Scoil an Chroí Ró Naofa JNS, Tallaght. Having completed a Bachelors of Education Degree in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, Edel went on to obtain a Masters in Special and Inclusive Education, DCU. She is currently studying for a Higher Diploma in Psychology. Her current duties include the design and the provision of CPD for teachers in the area of challenging behaviour. In addition, she provides on-going support to teachers in the area of behavioural interventions and planning.

ELISHA FOY Elisha Foy is an Advisor with the NCSE. She is seconded from St Mark’s Special School in Newbridge. St Mark’s Special School caters for pupils with Mild General Learning Difficulty, many of whom have co-occurring and/or co-morbid diagnosis. Elisha initially completed a BA in Psychology, then completed her HDip in Ed, and has been teaching since 1999. She also attained a BA in English and a MEd SEN. She has worked with the Froebel Department of Primary and Early Childhood Education as a lecturer and School Placement Supervisor. She also works as a lecturer in the School of Education, University College Dublin. Her lecture and research topics include Autism Spectrum Disorders, Challenging Behaviour, Teacher Training in SEN, Social Skills, Psychometric Testing and Dyslexia. Elisha lives in Killeigh, Tullamore with her husband Derick and two young children Saoirse and Pádraig.

Communication for Leaders: The ‘X’ and ‘Y’ Factors As communication is at the heart of the work of school principals, this seminar is designed to enhance school leaders’ communication within the domains of both verbal and non-verbal communication. With ‘the emotional geographies’ of a school setting the backdrop, the seminar examines how principals communicate in schools from a number of angles which includes ‘active listening’, giving presentations and non-verbal communication. It provides practical ideas and suggestions on how a principal can develop his / her day-to-day practices within the intense and often diverse context of school communication. As such, the seminar endeavours to ‘audit’ and ‘equip’ each participant with ‘communication awareness’ in order to increase their efficacy as communicators.

DR. JOHN WHITE Dr. John White works in the School of Policy and Practice on the St. Patrick’s Campus of DCU. He works on both undergraduate and post-graduate education programmes. He has worked as a primary teacher, primary school principal and primary school inspector. His research interests include human communication (with a specific focus on non-verbal communication), classroom communication, arts-based research, mathematics education, narrative inquiry, embodied cognition and primary school leadership. He is the co-author of ‘The Classroom X–Factor: The Power of Body Language and Nonverbal Communication in Teaching’ (Rutledge, 2011) and with Professor David Givens (Gonzaga University and Centre for Non-verbal Studies) is currently co-authoring ‘The Rutledge Dictionary of Non-verbal Communication’ (due to be published in 2020 by Rutledge).

The mechanism to address conflict will be a restorative one. If you enjoyed the Restorative Practices seminar last year, this seminar is likely to be of interest, but you don’t need to have attended it to benefit from this seminar.

ANN RYAN Ann Ryan has worked for all of her teaching career in areas of social disadvantage. She was a mainstream teacher for 17 years and then worked for 3 years as a teacher counsellor. She was Principal of St. Mark’s JNS, Tallaght for 17 years. Ann worked with the IPPN Leadership Support Team for three years until August 2018. Ann is passionately committed to a positive school experience for all. She considers Emotional Literacy as the bedrock on which to build best possible teaching and learning outcomes and believes relational trust and connectedness can never be overstated. She is an advocate of Restorative Values and Practices in schools and delivers workshops to school staffs on getting started in Restorative Practices. Ann also delivers whole staff workshops on developing a Dignity at Work Policy/Charter in schools. She is a qualified Life Coach and also works as a mentor with CSL.

Close the Word Gap: Oral Language and Vocabulary Development The ‘30 million word gap’ refers to research brought to light that by the time they begin school, children from lower-income families hear a staggering 30 million fewer words than those from higher-income families. Good oral language skills are essential for successful literacy. This seminar aims to show how we can expand pupils’ vocabulary to close the ‘word gap’.

JULIEANNE DEVLIN Julieanne Devlin is a teaching deputy principal, working and living in Co. Donegal with her husband and their four children. She is currently teaching a multigrade classroom of 2nd, 3rd and 4th classes. She qualified with a Bachelor of Education from St. Patrick’s College in 2002, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from St. Patrick’s College in 2004 and a Master of Science from Dublin City University in 2007. Julieanne is the author of Language for Living: Tip of the Tongue, an oral language and vocabulary development resource for primary schools and Aistear by Eduhub, a resource that integrates language and maths in a wonderful ‘learning through play’ environment. She has facilitated courses in various County Education Centres in Ireland and spoken at the Birmingham Education Show and the International Teaching and Learning Conference in Birmingham. She is passionate about oral language, teaching and the progress of her pupils.

Founded on neuroscience, attachment theory and evidence-based practice, and research proven for 50 years in UK, this workshop will give an overview of nurture strategies and interventions, and how they can help transform children’s lives.

SUSAN GIBNEY Dr Susan Gibney is Director of Blackrock Education Centre, on secondment from her role as Principal Teacher of Queen of Angels PS, Sandyford, Dublin. Susan has taught in a number of schools in Dublin, London and the Sultanate of Oman. Her PhD is entitled Parental Involvement in Primary Education - Rhetoric or Reality. Susan is an associate member of CSL and the PDST Leadership Team and has also facilitated leadership courses and supervised Masters’ Theses in UCD, UL and Maynooth University. Susan loves to travel, walk, cycle and ski. Susan is passionate about the difference that nurturing interventions can make in getting children to a place where they are ready to learn. In partnership with NurtureUK, and in collaboration with the network of 21 Education Support Centres in Ireland (ESCI), she has overseen the huge growth of nurture interventions in both primary and post primary schools, and has coordinated and facilitated professional development on nurture, all over Ireland.

DR. MAGS JORDAN Dr Mags Jordan is Principal of Scoil Mhuire, Coolcotts, in Wexford town. Scoil Mhuire is a large DEIS Band 1 primary school and it opened its Nurture Room in September 2017 in response to the need to provide a greater level of social, emotional and behavioural support to some of its pupils. Now in its third year of operation, the pupils who are supported through the Nurture Room display improved levels of self-esteem and self-efficacy, enhanced capacities to selfregulate, greater levels of happiness at school and improved learning outcomes. The work of the Nurture Room has also contributed greatly to the overall sense of care and wellbeing in the school and to a marked reduction in behaviours that disrupt day-to-day learning in the classroom. Scoil Mhuire is participating in the National Nurturing Schools Programme with nurtureuk and will participate in the third phase of the School Excellence Fund-DEIS programme from January 2020 in partnership with two local community-based preschools.

Middle Leadership - Tacaíocht agus Spreagadh The aim of this workshop is to examine a number of approaches that support and develop middle leaders within individual school contexts. This seminar will also give an overview of the ‘Comhar’ programme, a series of leadership development workshops for middle leaders (Assistant Principal I and Assistant Principal II) for both primary and post-primary schools.

COLM Ó TUATHAIL Colm Ó Tuathail is a primary school principal on secondment from Rearcross National School, Rearcross, Co. Tipperary. He worked as a classroom teacher in Gaelscoil Nás na Ríogh, Naas, Co. Kildare and as Teaching Principal of Bodyke National School, Bodyke, Co. Clare. Colm was seconded to the PDST in 2018 as a Leadership Advisor. This role included working on the design and delivery of the Misneach, Forbairt, Tánaiste and Comhar programmes for school leaders and the one-day seminars which strive to address some of the current challenges facing primary principals. Colm has an abiding interest in school leadership and has completed a Masters in Educational Leadership with Trinity College and a Master of Arts in Christian Leadership with Mary Immaculate College.

CIARA GAUGHAN Ciara Gaughan is originally from Belmullet, Co. Mayo. After graduating from St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra in 2006 she taught in St. Mary’s NS, Ashbourne and Kilcoskan NS in North Co. Dublin where she was Deputy Principal. She is a Teaching Principal in St. Margaret’s National School located beside Dublin Airport since September 2011. Ciara is currently on secondment to the Leadership Team of the Professional Development Service for Teachers. Since joining PDST she has been involved in designing and facilitating on their Leadership Programmes i.e. Comhar for Middle Leaders; Misneach for Newly Appointed Principals and Forbairt for experienced school leaders. Dedicated to lifelong learning, Ciara has completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership with NUI Maynooth and a Masters in Education with Trinity College.

Seeds of Success: A constructive approach to school gardening The objective of this seminar is to demonstrate to principals how they can effectively organise school gardening so that it is everybody’s responsibility but nobody’s burden. During the workshop principals will be shown what every class can do to ensure cumulative learning occurs in the school garden.

DR. PADDY MADDEN Paddy Madden worked as a primary teacher for three decades before becoming a lecturer in SESE education in the Marino Institute of Education where he worked for 16 years. He constructed the first school wildlife garden in Ireland in 1984 on which his thrice printed book Go Wild at School is based. In 2010 he co-founded SEED, (www.schoolearthed.ie), an organisation which seeks to promote school gardening on the island of Ireland. To date, SEED has organised 6 school garden conferences and has planned and constructed 7 school gardens at Bloom. He recently graduated as a Doctor of Education (D.Ed.) from Trinity College. His thesis is entitled: Exploring the State and Status of Nature Awareness, Appreciation and Education in the Irish Primary School System. It can be accessed on www.rian.ie. Working with Pupils with High Functioning Autism (HFA) in the Primary School The aim of this presentation is to help schools compile a student support plan (SSP) for a pupil with HFA. It will include information on assessments, social skills development; learning style; NEPS problem solving process to include a pupil with HFA in the mainstream class, and much more.

DR. MICHELE DUNLEAVY Michele has a number of yearsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; experience teaching in a primary, special class and special school setting. Michele was seconded as an Advisor to the special education support service (SESS). Michele also worked as a part-time and guest lecturer in a number of colleges including NUIG, UCC, and Trinity College Dublin. Michele now works as a lecturer in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick where she lectures on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Additionally, she supervises undergraduate dissertations and Masters and Doctoral Theses. Michele has a particular interest in Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and inclusion. She completed her Masters and Doctoral research in these areas. Michele has presented at many international and national conferences on the topic of ASD and inclusion and continues to conduct researnch in the area of special education.

Reducing ICT infrastructure-related stress in primary schools As a busy school Principal, you manage a wide range of areas in your school. While ICT and technical support are important areas, they are still just one of the many priorities under your responsibility. Given the range of ICT options from different companies, and the wide range of views from ‘experts’, it can be difficult to determine how to select, procure, deploy and maintain ICT to support teaching and learning in your school. The whole process can be demanding, time-consuming and stressful. This seminar will focus on practical ways of assisting you as a school principal to review the areas of ICT infrastructure and technical support, provide clarity and advice in a number of key areas, and hopefully reduce the amount of time and stress involved in managing these areas in your school. Seminar attendees will also have an opportunity to take our ‘ICT Infrastructure Stress Test’.

DEIRDRE REDMOND Deirdre is Project Officer for ICT Infrastructure with PDST Technology in Education, where she provides information and advice on how fit-for-purpose ICT’s can improve schools’ ICT infrastructure / whole-school planning to support teaching and learning. This includes a wide range of technologies such as computing devices, presentation technologies, networking solutions - including Wi-Fi, servers, cloud-based applications, printing, technical support advice and other technologies relevant to schools. Deirdre worked for many years in a number of multi-national organisations, providing technical support and in IS administration roles. She subsequently worked in both primary and post-primary schools as an ICT coordinator as well as working as an ICT Advisor for the Association of Community and Comprehensive Schools.

TOM LONERGAN Tom is National Coordinator for Technology Integration in PDST Technology in Education, www.pdsttechnologyineducation.ie, and previously in the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE). Tom has worked in a number of technical roles in Ireland, Canada, and the UK. He provides advice and support to schools on ICT infrastructure and technical support to help achieve improved learning outcomes. He also works on the Schools Broadband Programme in collaboration with the DES and HEAnet.

NCCA PROJECT TEAM The NCCA Team have classroom experience in a range of school contexts both nationally and internationally, as well as school leadership experience. In recent years, team members have worked on the new Primary Language Curriculum/Curaclam Teanga na Bunscoile, a new draft mathematics curriculum, and the review of RSE. The team is currently working with the Schools Forum, research and education partners to develop the Primary Curriculum Framework which will set out directions for curriculum change for the coming years. Working towards a model of Sustainable School Leadership: The PIEW model This seminar intends to provide school leaders with a practical model or framework which will allow them control and manage the flow of initiatives as well as structure the workload they face daily. It will provide a means of prioritising initiatives considering aspects like the capacity of the school, the ability of the initiative to enhance Teaching and Learning and their importance in relation to the other competing initiatives. It will allow school leaders to interrogate the willingness and recognition by the school staff that the initiative will be taken through all phases – Pilot, Implementation and Embedding and enable the school leader manage the expectations of those who would exert pressure to have their initiative adopted by the school to the exclusion of others – to empower the school leader to say “NO” politely.

MARIA TULLY Maria taught for eight years in St Brigid’s JNS, Brookfield, Tallaght before joining the staff of Scoil Phádraig in Clane, Co. Kildare in 1999. Maria had been an Assistant Principal in both schools for several years before becoming Deputy Principal in Scoil Phádraig in 2017. She was IPPN National Council Representative for Kildare (2018/19) and is now a member of the Board of Directors of IPPN. Maria is interested in further developing the role of the Deputy Principal within IPPN and establishing support groups in each county to develop a community of support for the leadership role of the Deputy Principal. She has worked closely with IPPN in trialling the implementation of the PIEW model as a model for addressing priority needs in Irish primary schools.

Coping with grief and loss in the 21st century Irish Classroom How does grief and loss impact on the child in the classroom? How can schools be better prepared to confidently and sensitively support the needs of the grieving child? Research has shown that teachers do not feel adequately prepared to cope with grief and loss in the classroom. This seminar aims to address this situation and identify possible solutions.

CARMELITA McGLOUGHLIN Carmelita McGloughlin obtained a Primary Teachers Diploma from the Froebel College of Primary Education, Sion Hill, Blackrock, Dublin, Ireland. She taught children ranging from ages 4 to 12 in primary schools, in both city and rural settings. She completed a Diploma in Systemic Family Therapy at the University of Limerick (2.1 Hons) She has also completed a range of short courses including: Safe Talk; Working with Death and Dying; Facilitator Training Course for Bereavement Support; Basic Counselling Skills. In 2017, Carmelita, was awarded an MA in Education (MIC) for her research thesis: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The challenges that face the primary school teacher in coping with grief and loss in a multicultural settingâ&#x20AC;?. Carmelita spent over four years living in Abu Dhabi and therefore has a heightened awareness of the possible challenges of cultural diversity in the classroom. Carmelita works in Mary Immaculate College as a Mentor/Tutor on School Placement and Early Childhood and Care Education Placement. She also worked as Development worked with the Compassionate Communities (CC), Milford Care Centre, Limerick, Ireland. The aim of the CC project was to support people in the Mid-West of Ireland to think a little differently about death, to encourage people to plan ahead, talk with others and offer practical support within the community to those facing the end of life.

He is the lead developer of the award-winning Parents Plus and Working Things Out programmes that are used in schools throughout Ireland and a leading researcher in the application of technology to mental health services delivery. He also the best-selling author of fourteen positive psychology and self-help books including Counselling Children, Adolescents and Famlies and Positive Parenting that have been translated into nine languages including Japanese, Chinese and Arabic. Each speaker will have approximately 5 minutes to speak on their given topic so participants will leave with several examples of good practice. It is informal but organised. GER RUANE Gerard Ruane is originally from Co. Mayo and spent part of his childhood in Co. Leitrim. He attended Ballinamore National School, Co. Leitrim and Bonniconlon National School, Co. Mayo. Following his secondary education in St. Muredach’s College, Ballina, Co. Mayo, he trained as a teacher in Mary Immaculate College. He holds a Diploma in Management from Trinity College, a Diploma in Special Education Resource Teaching from Froebel College and a Masters of Arts in Special Education Needs from Roehampton University, London. Gerard spent seven years teaching in St. Patrick’s National School, Slane, Co. Meath, where he was also a post-holder. In 2007 he became Teaching Principal of Kilskyre National School outside Kells in Co. Meath. It initially had two mainstream teachers and a shared learning support teacher. Over the course of four years in grew to become a four teacher school with a shared learning support teacher. In 2011 he moved to Co. Clare and became Teaching Principal of Scariff National School. It had six mainstream teachers, a learning support teacher and a resource teacher. He became Administrative Principal of Parteen National School, Co. Clare in 2014. It has fourteen mainstream teachers and seven support teachers. He has an acute understanding of the challenges facing Principals of small and large schools. He has facilitated the IPPN Summer Course, Ciall Ceannaithe, for a number of years. He delivered a seminar on Workload Management for Teaching Principals at conference. He is a member of the Principal Advice Panel and is a member of the Clare County Committee and the IPPN Board of Directors. He is Treasurer of IPPN. He is married to Aoibheann, who is also a primary school principal, and has one son, Mícheál, and two daughters, Méabh and Aela.
