DELTA AMERICAS HEADQUARTERS RECOGNIZED BY UC BERKELEY’S Delta, a global leader in power and thermal management solutions, today announces that its Delta Americas Headquarters located in Fremont, Calif., was honored by UC Berkley’s Center for the Built Environment (CBE), earning an Honorable Mention in its 2017 Livable Buildings Award program.

T

he superior sustainable design and high quality-oflife properties of Delta’s US LEED Platinum-certified, net-zero-energy designed green building were instrumental in receiving the honor. Based on its calculated energy usage in 2016, its Energy Use Intensity (EUI) achieved 21.6, indicating the facility saved 90 percent energy than traditional buildings (Average EUI: 212)*1. In July of this year, the building achieved full net-zero operation, with its solar energy generation surpassing consumption.

Since 2007, CBE's annual Livable Buildings Award has recognized projects that meet the highest standards for architectural design, energy and sustainability, and occupant satisfaction. The CBE jury, which is composed of architects, engineers, and the other industrial experts, commended the impressive size and design of the Delta

To further elevate its sustainable operations and reduce energy consumption, the Delta America Headquarters utilizes many of Delta’s own technologies, such as its solar PV inverters, energy-savings variable frequency drives, elevator power regeneration technologies, a wireless outdoor LED lighting system, InfraSuite Datacenter infrastructure solutions, electric vehicle charging solutions, and building automation management and Delta Energy Online software. To conserve water, the facility also includes a 140,000-gallon rain water harvesting system, which has been discreetly implemented on the building’s property to collect water from the rooftops for irrigation. s part of a wide range that spans proven use in environments from deep space and ultra-high vacuum to standard industrial, the ZSH in particular is designed as a cost effective solution for truly harsh industrial use where standard build stepper motors would have severe limitations. Such application areas would include automated machinery where IP68 environmental protection is a prerequisite, or inside climatic chambers, or perhaps submerged in liquids such as fuel oils or detergents. A specific area of use for this motor is adjusting rotor blades in aviation. The IP68 option includes a robust housing and high-strength cable gland waterproof immersion up to 10 m depth. An extended temperature range option covers dynamic use from -30 to +80 °C with a short term capability to +100 °C.

The range is available in NEMA compatible frame diameters of 57, 87 and 107 mm. The 2-phase 200 step/rev hybrid stepper motor design is microstep compatible with smooth motion and holding torque from 0.45 to 17 Nm. Realising that many applications require more drive-train components parts than just a motor, a wide range of options with harsh-environment specifications include integral permanent magnet brakes, various feedback encoders and backlash-free planetary gear units with reduction ratios from 3:1 to 512:1. AEROTECH EXPANDS OUR CAPABILITIES WITH A DEDICATED BUILDING IN GERMANY

Aerotech celebrated the groundbreaking for our new Aerotech Germany office in Fürth, Germany. Construction and relocation to the new building has been completed and the opening ceremony was held on May 18th, 2017.

ccording to Norbert Ludwig, the Managing Director of Aerotech Germany, “We had approximately 40 participants from outside [Aerotech] plus 20 Aerotech Representatives at the opening ceremony. Participants at the opening ceremony included customers and suppliers, architects, and craftspeople. Our special guest was the Major of the city of Fürth.”

The opening ceremony was very well received and we look forward to the additional sales, service, and support that our new office will allow us to extend to our customers in Germany, as well as throughout Europe. The German building now joins our dedicated United Kingdom building, as well as our network of offices and representatives, in support of our European customers.

After a general welcome, Norbert Ludwig gave a presentation on Aerotech GmbH describing the new, greatly expanded support capabilities in Germany, followed by some greetings and welcome words from the President of Aerotech, Mark Botos. After lunch was the speech from the Major of Fürth and a presentation of an invited speaker, a Physics professor from a German university, talking about laser structuring of materials using Aerotech components.

NEW BEARING AND BALL SCREW INNOVATIONS FROM NSK

SURSAVE can help lower non-repeatable runout (NRRO) by 50% in main-spindle applications on machine tools

NSK will use the forthcoming EMO 2017 exhibition (Hanover, Germany, 18-23 September) to shine the spotlight on a number of new and recent innovations for the global machine tool market. These will include advances in angular contact ball bearings for main spindles, deep groove ball bearings for spindle motors, and toughened ball screws specifically for injection moulding machines. Also featured on the NSK booth (Hall 7, Stand D12) will be a working demonstration of a condition monitoring system (CMS) with real-time vibration analysis displayed on a monitor.

SK is the only manufacturer of its type to offer a complete development and supply service for the precision motion components found within machine tools, including bearings, ball screws and linear guides. Among the principal exhibits at EMO 2017 will be ‘SURSAVE’, a newly developed outer ring cage for NSK angular contact ball bearings used in main spindle applications. SURSAVE has been designed to help lower non-repeatable runout (NRRO) by 50% compared with conventional units. increase of up to 25% during the measuring process—all of that at a very good price-performance ratio. All machines of the HAIMER Microset VIO series have a modular design to cover a wide spectrum of needs. Tools that weigh up to 160 kg and have a diameter and measuring length of up to 1000 mm can be measured. Depending on your needs the devices can be upgraded to fully automated CNC measuring machines with integrated HAIMER shrinking technology. The unique design ensures ergonomic functionality for ideal ease of use for the operator. This applies both to the spindle access as well as the central control panel. The innovative one-hand-operation makes it possible to manually or automatically measure the axes and guarantees a μm-precise fine positioning. The UNO series machines are available in two different sizes. The series starts with the UNO 20/40 with a maximum tool length of 400 mm on the z-axis; the UNO 20/70 has a maximum tool length of 700 mm. Both versions are available as table devices with a 19” flat screen. A 22” or 23” touch display and the comfort system cabinet is also available as an option. By using the snap gauge method, even the standard models offer the possibility to measure tools with a diameter of up to 100 mm. With use of spindle adaptors that configure to the base SK50 taper interface, it is possible to also use most popular interfaces such as HSK, Capto, VDI, KM or BMT.

Even simple devices deliver highest precision With the HAIMER Microset UNO series, the focus lies on the precise tool presetting as well as consistent performance. Due to the many different options the UNO series offers, price-performance ratio is very good. et up in 1949 by Robert Destic for the design of tools and special machinery, Sermati has since become a tier 1 and 2 supplier for the aeronautical, defence and energy sectors under the leadership of the third generation of entrepreneurs. Xavier Mielvaque and his wife Karine Mielvaque, granddaughter of the founder, share the responsibilities of the CEO. Together they steered the company (210 staff, turnover 30 million)

towards the manufacture of high-added value parts, conserving all know-how from tool manufacturing and complex mechatronic systems. As many as 70 staff, counting external staff in two 8-hour shifts, work in the project department with a truly proactive approach. Since 2005, the focus on co-design and manufacture of titanium, inconel

and refractory steel parts and subassemblies, but also of aluminium for specific markets has allowed a strong growth. This of course requires constant investments (2 million € a year on average) in top quality machines and tools. The dimensions of the parts, from 1,000 mm to 4, 000 mm, and even 10,000 mm, precision and hardness of the machined material do not allow to make any erroneous investments. Mikael Helloco, purchase manager with a highly technical profile shares his methods with us. Good performance during roughing and precision for finishing The first goal is to find gantry vertical milling machines capable of machining 80% of engine parts and structures. We had to find a good balance between efficiency and precision to ensure impeccable quality at reduced cost. “For the manufacture of complex parts made of hard and light metals with a high stock removal rate, our machines have to ensure high stiffness during roughing operations and good dynamics and precision during finishing operations” explains Mickael Helloco. After selecting the manufacturers who offered large-sized machining centres that combine power, torque, high speed, dynamics of axles and NC, it

was decided to submit these machines to a machining test according to technical specifications. These were carried out at the workshops of the manufacturers in presence of the Sermati technical service and consisted of machining of titanium.

These tests showed that the Spanish manufacturer Correa scored well above the required levels. The condition of the test was to perform a 25 mm chatter-free stroke using an end mill while the ram was fully extended. The Fox machining centre managed to reach 60 mm. “When we did the test, we were surprised ourselves,” said Juan Martín, sales manager of the Correa Group. It must be said that the 3-axis UAD machining head of the Fox machining centre develops 52 kW (S1-100%) of power with a torque (S1-100%) of 1300 nm and 6,000 r.p.m. This is further complemented with a 5-axis UGV milling head rotating at 12,000 rpm generating 35 kW with 190 Nm at (S1-100%). Available for automatic loading straight from the adjacent magazine, the two heads fulfil this complementary role to ensure both roughing with major chip formation on the most difficult materials, and finishing of complex shapes with the highest possible precision. A sound balance between stiffness, damping capacity, dynamic movements and precision is obtained. In addition to a careful thermo-symmetrical design, a thermal compensation system and cooling of essential mechanical elements, such as the milling head, considerably reduce expansion. Sermati has selected the two milling heads that best meet their requirements from the extensive range of milling heads available. The range of mechanical spindles reaches 6,000 rpm and 1500 Nm in S1, with an increment of 0.02º by mechanical locking the crowns. The HF spindles offered for 5-axis milling heads reach speeds of up to 24,000 rpm. The change of milling heads is automatic, using the magazine located at the base of the gantry. 10-TONNE CAPACITY VERLINDE HOIST GIVES PRODUCTION UPTIME A LIFT AT UK MOULD SHOP

A Eurobloc VM3 Essential electric wire-rope hoist and crane kit from Verlinde is providing a boost to operations at an injection-moulding shop in the UK.

O

ffering 10-tonne capacity and 9m height of lift, the hoist is helping Cannock-headquartered Goodfish Ltd to lift mould tools into the company’s various injection moulding machines with an efficiency that serves to maximise production uptime. The hoist is part of a crane system with a span beam measuring 19m and an installed height of 4.3m. It was designed, manufactured and installed by Verlinde’s UK distributor, Pelloby.

“The crane is a major asset introduction for Goodfish, probably the biggest we have undertaken to date,” states Senior Technical Manager Kevin Turner. “The original method of changing tools involved lifting split tools into our injection moulding machines using a 3-tonne A-frame gantry, but this was a very slow and cumbersome operation.” A choice of two traversing speed (20 and 5m/min) and two hoisting speeds (5 and 0.83m/min) on the Eurobloc VM3 Essential installed at Goodfish helps the company to optimise its production process. Indeed, the new crane and hoist will allow for optimum tool change times with the assistance of methodologies such as SMED (single minute exchange of dies).

“Production up-time will increase as a matter of course, but better still – the increased 10-tonne lifting capacity offered by the Verlinde hoist will open the door to new business opportunities and potential new customers,” says Mr Turner. A further benefit of the new hoist relates to safety. The new crane system at injection moulding specialist Goodfish features a 10-tonne capacity Eurobloc VM3 electric wire-rope hoist from Verlinde.

However, by investing in the new crane system with Verlinde hoist, these issues are a thing of the past. For instance, not only does the Eurobloc VM3 Essential hoist utilize an LED floodlight for added visibility, it features an electromecanical load limiter as standard, a hoisting limit switch, high safety factor galvanized wire rope, IP54 protection for the electrical cabinet, low-voltage control and a rotating hook with safety latch. Maintenance requirements are also much reduced thanks to a number of special features on the Verlinde Eurobloc VM3 Essential. For instance, not only are the lifting gearbox and traversing gearbox lubricated for life, but the lifting brake is designed to function for the lifetime of the unit in normal operation. Furthermore, the rope guide is built in a way that it can be easily replaced during routine maintenance, while a very high wire rope/drum diameter ratio increases the longevity of the wire rope.

The entire system, which is operated via a handheld radio-controlled remote, was not without its installation challenges. For instance, to maximise the lift height, the crane was based on a ‘stooled-up’ design, which means its legs are higher than those of most cranes. Although this height could have been achieved with taller free-standing columns, because 18 of them were required to support the weight of the crane (plus a potential lift capacity of up to 10 tonnes), this would have meant using considerably more steel and ultimately been less cost effective. ureau Veritas and Schutter Group, global leaders in agri-commodities testing and inspection, have introduced a rapid aflatoxin pre-shipment inspection and quality control process designed to protect producers, shippers, global buyers and feed processors by mitigating the risk of toxin exposure through on-site quick detection tests Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring mycotoxin produced by two types of mold: aspergillus flavus and aspergillus parasiticus. Aspergillus flavus is common and widespread in nature and is most often found when certain grains are grown under stressful conditions such as drought or excessive precipitation levels. Exposure to aflatoxins can cause liver damage and cancer if not immediately identified and addressed. Animals fed contaminated food can pass aflatoxin transformation products into eggs, milk products, and meat.

For example, in 2016 Brazilian corn crops were heavily impacted by aflatoxin problems, mainly due to the drought in Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais. Brazil is about to experience one of the largest corn harvests in recent years.
