Ceramics: Pottery Decorating Techniques

Learning to decorate pottery in new and innovative ways will be the focus of this class. Decorating techniques such as stamping, texturizing, piercing, and others will be demonstrated. Participants will have an opportunity to make pottery forms, try out new decorating techniques, and glaze fire their work to completion. The course is open to all levels and will consist of demonstrations and open studio work time for participants.

This class will focus on making basket and cauldron pottery forms on the wheel. Learn to make unique handles and feet and use other hand-building techniques to finish wares. The course is open to all levels and will consist of demonstrations and open studio work time for participants.

Fundamentals of Portrait Photography

This course is an examination of the fundamentals of portrait photography, both in a studio setting and outdoors. Topics such as posing, exposure, ratios, and lighting will be examined. Students will develop a basic understanding of operating studio lighting equipment, and how to create effective portraits in an outdoor situation. Students taking this course may use all types of cameras, including cell phones, but DSLR cameras are recommended.

Advanced Photography: Creativity and Storytelling – NEW!

In this course, students will learn techniques and ideas that will enable them to grow as creative photographers and visual storytellers. In class examples and demonstrations will enhance and challenge the participants to use photography as a tool for communicating a message.

American Sign Language: Beginning I – NEW!

In this introductory course, students will learn how to sign basic phrases and sentences. Students will learn how to introduce themselves, colors, numbers, locations, activity words, and so much more. By the end of the course, students will gain an understanding of the world of Deaf culture and be able to communicate effectively using sign language.

American Sign Language: Beginning II – NEW!

In this next-level course, students will continue to build phrases and sentences with the vocabulary acquired during American Sign Language: Beginning I, as well as some new vocabulary. Students will practice phrases and sentences by recording their own signing and uploading their videos for review. Students will also continue to explore the world of Deaf culture.

Art Educators:

In still life drawing, the artist uses a still object as their subject matter. Students will start by drawing simple objects and then move on to slightly more complicated ones. Students will learn the basics of sighting and measuring with a pencil, perspective, and how to use shadowing to assist in accurately translating what they see to their drawing on the page.

These three courses are eligible for PGPs if requested during registration.

Watercolor Painting and Collage – NEW!

Take a journey into watercolor experimentation and creative collage making. Students will learn various techniques, such as salt painting, dry and wet coloration, and the use of texturizing materials for creating abstract works of art. Students will use the texture pieces to collage onto a large format piece of watercolor paper.

Fiber Arts – NEW!

Students will learn embroidery techniques to create a finished piece of art that can be framed or used as a throw pillow cover during the first four meetings. The second four meetings will be dedicated to needle felting. Students will learn how to make felt beads and small pouches on which they can embroider seed beads.

Italian Language and Culture for Travelers: Beginning I

This course is an introduction to the Italian language and is great for travelers who are interested in practical communication skills and grammar tools. Students will receive a general overview of the Italian language and will be introduced to an authentic Italian culture.

Culinaria with Ilaria: Italian Cooking and Culture

Join instructor and native Italian, Ilaria Piccinini, for a unique introduction to delicious Italian cuisine. In this course, students will be guided through the preparation of various traditional Italian dishes. Additionally, students will learn about Italian culture and traditions as well as cooking-related vocabulary by exploring and savoring selected regional dishes. Each session will feature new recipes.

Voice Over 101

Announcing for television, radio, and web ads, narrating films, training videos, audio books, or providing the vocalizations for a character in a video game can be a lucrative career allowing you to work from home on a flexible schedule. This class, taught by a professional voice talent with years of experience, will examine opportunities in the industry of voice over and discuss what it takes to become successful. Using video and audio examples to bring the information to life, you will learn what you need to get started, from equipment to skills needed, and where to find work. Get your specific questions answered and gain a clear overview to make voice over a possible career for you.

This advanced class will explore concepts to take your knowledge to the next level. Learn techniques to captivate listeners, be able to sound like an authority on any subject and learn how to analyze scripts the way professional actors do to deliver a performance that clients will happily hire for again and again. Students will read prepared scripts with the instructor, helping shape and perfect their performance. Also included will be information on finding clients, how to approach them, and what you’ll need to get hired.

Acting Fundamentals – NEW!

This class will cover the basics of stage acting, giving new actors the tools to feel confident performing in front of an audience. Class will consist of improv games, scripted scene work, and tips for auditioning successfully and getting involved in the community theatre scene. Students will explore different characters and learn how to craft the arc of a scene, using objectives, relationships, and focus, within a creative and supportive environment.

Organic Food Gardening

Gardening for Native Pollinators

There are over 4,000 native pollinator species in North America that depend upon our gardens and landscapes for food and resources, just as we depend on them. Gain an overview of our native pollinators and discover techniques that we can use to lure them to work for us in our gardens, while also providing season-appropriate habitats for them in our outdoor spaces.

CPR/AED/First Aid

The American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR & AED Training Class is designed to teach the skills of CPR for victims of all ages, including ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and relief of foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO). A CPR certification card will be distributed following successful completion of the class.

The American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid Training Course: The course trains participants in first aid basics for the most common first aid emergencies, including how to recognize them, how to call for help, and how to perform lifesaving skills.
