Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Community Members, Here in the Department of Nursing, we nurture the dreams of our students who are passionate about caring for persons who are vulnerable.

By its nature, nursing means caring for the immigrant family members who do not speak English or the frail teenager, newly diagnosed with diabetes.

The artful practice of offering hope for those who are vulnerable makes nursing a special discipline.

Nursing is also uniquely interwoven with the support of other disciplines that help us care for others. The fabric of contemporary clinical practice includes our clinical practice partners in medicine, social work, dentistry, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nutrition, to name a few.

This issue of Bridges honors the ways that nurses care for those who are vulnerable—from migrant workers to American Indians and to members of the Fort Wayne community who are less fortunate.

IPFW Nursing reaches out to outstanding partners in Fort Wayne and our academic colleagues in the health sciences.

Our faculty members and students partner with experts to improve the clinical experience for patients and families. Our nursing teams are engaging with the community in ways that are possible because we are responsive to the needs of others.

pan ramas No Whining at the Winery Gathering data from alumni for continuous quality improvement can be tricky business for all university departments, though particularly so if program alumni are nurses. With rare exception, IPFW Nursing Alumni are busy professional nurses, working around the clock to provide care for persons in NE Indiana and throughout the country.

The IPFW Department of Nursing is dedicated to remaining a cutting edge force for good in the world. And we want to hear from our alumni about ways to strengthen our many programs.

In addition to asking alumni to complete surveys and online questionnaires, IPFW alumni were invited to wineries this fall. In the first annual IPFW Nursing Alumni data gathering event, attendees were invited to share their thoughts with faculty, staff, and administrators.

To no one’s surprise, comments about the venue were 100% positive and comments about our nursing program were 100% enlightening. One nursing alumna offered to be an invited speaker in undergraduate classes and share her areas of nursing expertise. Other ideas: a nursing alumni Facebook page and activation of a robust IPFW nursing alumni group with regularly scheduled fun activities.

pan ramas(continued) Gifts of the Spirit This past October, the IPFW Nursing Department participated in the 25th Annual Healthy Cities Health Fair held at Matthew 25 Health & Dental Clinic. Warm winter clothing and personal hygiene items were distributed to attendees along with large doses of health education and consultation.

In the spirit of honoring the many persons who are served through Matthew 25 and in honor of the 25th Annual Healthy Cities event, IPFW advanced painting student, Ellen Mensch created an oil painting which was presented to Matthew 25 from the IPFW Department of Nursing and the College of Health and Human Services as a gesture of thankful recognition of their service to those most in need of care and warmth.

1) What is Camp PossAbility and what made you decide to start the camp?

3) On September 18 you had your 2nd “PossAbility Gala”, what was the purpose of this event?

"The purpose of our PossAbility Gala was to raise funding for our 2016 camp week. Camp will run July 31 to August 5, 2016.

Costs to run camp for a week are approximately $56,000, so a lot of fundraising is needed to make camp happen and provide scholarships so that our campers can attend."

4) How can people help Camp PossAbility? Donations?

Students embraced the challenge, demonstrated passion for the assignment, and truly demonstrated a change in behavior upon seeing the fruits of their work following the live experience. Furthermore, the spirit of the project was admirable. Through Professor Beckman’s expertise and coaching, wonderful resources were established that could remain sustainable for future nursing students, while at the same time, senior nursing students were prepared to enter the nursing work force knowing how to think critically and strive for excellence.

pan ramas(continued) Faculty/Student Engagement Yields Rich, Rewarding, and Scholarly Results Engagement between students and faculty (course and clinical faculty) contributes to meaningful teaching and learning (T/L) outcomes, growing confidence, leadership skills, and professionalism as exemplified in the following scenario.

Spring 2015 Six undergraduate senior students enrolled in the leadership class were assigned with preceptors who were also clinical faculty, with eight to nine 100, 200, and 300 level nursing students in respective clinicals. In addition, the leadership course faculty, Professor Sarah Beckman, was in a threeway contract with each student and preceptor for a 90 hour practicum and completion of a quality improvement (QI) project.

Coaching and relationship building was widespread and evident 1) Professor Beckman with preceptors and leadership students, 2) Preceptors with leadership students and 100/200/300 level students, and 3) Leadership students (upperclassmen) with100/200/300 students in clinical (underclassmen).

The Neuman Systems Model (NSM) was applied to assess stressors experienced by underclassmen along with a literature review which revealed similar findings of stressors experienced by nursing students. NSM preventions as interventions resulted in initial QI projects in small clinical groups that were eventually combined into one large project named the Little/Big* Initiative. This initiative expanded beyond small groups and targeted the nursing student body. A four foot by four foot resource board was created along with a website containing electronic T/L resources. These resources were shared during six lunch and learn sessions in the Department of Nursing. Relationship building and active engagement were evident throughout this process. Sustainability of the project was considered by the Bigs early on in the semester.

fe tures Healthy Cities Health Fair

On Friday, October 23rd, hundreds of volunteers and clients converged on the Matthew 25 Medical/Dental Clinic on East Jefferson Boulevard for the 25th Annual Healthy Cities Health Fair. Services provided included blood sugar and cholesterol screenings, mammograms, PSA for men, vision and hearing screenings, flu shots, haircuts, and more. Each client participating in the health fair received a winter coat and a warm meal.

This year, 211 clients were served. Each year, it takes approximately 300 volunteers working 4 hour shifts to staff this event. The volunteers include professionals and nursing students from IPFW and University of St. Francis. IPFW was also well represented by the Anthropology, Dental, Radiology, and Human Services departments.

The Healthy Cities Health Fair is a yearly event that was originated in 1990

by Linda Graham, a former professor in the Nursing Department. Graham identified the need for yearly health screenings for the uninsured and under-insured members of the community. Graham enlisted the help of her friends in the health professions to come together to provide many health screenings that would normally not be accessible to this population. The health fair outgrew several venues over the years, and finally has found a new home at Matthew 25 in 2012.

Healthy Cities continues every year in loving memory of Linda Graham, since her death in 2008.

fe tures (continued) Health screenings for migrant workers at Beck’s Hybrid Seeds

By Heather Krull, DNP, FNP-BC and Jens Clegg After almost a year of planning, on Tuesday September 15, 2015 Nurse Practitioner (NP) students from the School of Nursing and spanish students from the Department of International Languages and Culture Studies at IPFW traveled to Atlanta, Indiana to provide health screenings for migrant workers at Beck’s Hybrid Seeds. The Health Clinic was organized by Nurse Practitioner and IPFW faculty member Heather Krull. Spanish Professor Jens Clegg assisted in the planning of the event.

Prior to the event, Professor Clegg’s Spanish class translated pamphlets designed by the NP students into Spanish. The pamphlets provided health promotion information on hypertension, tobacco cessation, repetitive work injuries, and health care resources. These pamphlets were provided to the migrant workers during their examinations. Multiple health conditions were identified during the examinations including: hypertension, oral abscesses, musculoskeletal injuries, tobacco abuse, and obesity. Referrals were then made for care. The day-long clinic with four exam rooms served 42 migrant workers and gave great practical experience to both the Spanish and NP students.

All students had the opportunity to interact with the migrant workers providing translation, physical examinations, medical advice, education on medical information, and information on medical resources available in the community.

Lac Du Flambeau

By Nancy Abab-Fussle, IPFW Nursing Student On October 11, 2015, Professors LeAnn Mayer, Jim Gabbard, and Denise Jordan loaded up two vans with nine students, tee shirts, sweat shirts, gifts, and other accoutrements needed for a five day trip to the North Woods of Wisconsin. Our destination was the Lac Du Flambeau Indian Reservation. Our purpose was to provide a cultural immersion experience for senior community health nursing students and a collaborative assignment for two visual arts students. Our goal was to be of service. We were going to contribute to the community assessment data collected by last fall’s students, work on the community improvement plan, and develop some health promotion and disease prevention strategies specific to this Native American population. We were looking forward to doing some good.

We arrived in Wisconsin after a long drive, checked into our hotel, then gathered in the hotel lobby. It felt good to walk around the lobby and stretch our legs. We ordered pizza from a local pizzeria. While waiting for the pizza to come, we discussed the itinerary for the next few days. The students were excited as were we.

The cultural immersion experience started with an introduction to Native American history provided by Isaiah Brokenleg, epidemiologist and program director at Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center. He helped students understand the effect of forced migration, boarding schools, and the loss of cultural identity on Native American people. He explained why Native American clients might mistrust and resist “white man’s medicine.” How events rooted in the People’s past affected today’s health crises of diabetes, alcohol and drug abuse, and intimate partner violence. Later, we took a tour of the Peter Christiansen Health Center and the students got to see artifacts and images that represented the history of the Ojibwe and the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians.

This teaching came full circle when students visited the Boys Boarding School and Waswagoning Indian Village. The boarding school featured images of children removed from their parents and stripped of their identities. They were given new names, new clothes to

wear, and a new language to learn and speak. The images were stark and the history disturbing.

Students stepped into the past during their visit to Waswagoning Indian Village. Tour guide and administrator, Charlotte Hockings, explained what life was like for the Ojibwe people prior to removal to the reservation.

Students learned how the Ojibwe gathered food and how it was replenished. They learned how the Ojibwe hunted, fished, and lived. The trek through the 20 acre village brought to life the old ways of the People. And, it helped explain the social, health, and political problems of today.

Health promotion and disease prevention through education is the primary tool for community and public health nursing. Students planned intervention strategies in the form of poster presentations to address influenza, diabetes, and intimate partner violence. They participated in a flu shot clinic and did teaching on the flu, what it is and what it is not and why flu immunization is necessary. They spent time in the medical clinic with the diabetic specialist and learned about the magnitude of diabetes in the Native American population.

The surprise was what we didn’t do. We anticipated working on the community assessment and community improvement plan. What they needed and wanted was help putting together a tool to assess effectiveness of a component of the prenatal teaching program – safe sleep arrangements – so that’s what we did. Students put together a list of questions the program administrator could use to evaluate her teaching. The community home visitor could also use this tool to reinforce concepts learned in the prenatal program. And, it was a great lesson to the students that what we deem important might not be what is wanted or needed and that timing is everything. They needed the assessment tool immediately. The community improvement plan could wait. It reinforced the teaching and learning principles covered in class.

Professor Jim Gabbard and his two photography students captured images to record the trip. This proved to be a nice interdepartmental collaboration because the photography students were able to work on course assignments while providing needed images for the nursing department.

All in all, the trip to Lac Du Flambeau was a great learning experience for instructors and students alike.

The Indiana State Nurses Association meeting Thirteen (13) students from Dr. Crosby’s Professional Seminar III class attended the Indiana State Nurses Association meeting in Indianapolis on September 18, 2015. Dr. Pam Cipriano, President of the American Nurses Association, was the key note speaker and spoke on the topic of NursePatient Ratios and their impact on Patient Safety and Patient Outcomes. The students surround Dr. Cipriano in the picture.

Students wanted to be involved with their professional organization, as well as learn about the evidence regarding nurse-patient ratios and patient outcomes.

Ms. Smith stated she really enjoyed the meeting and said, “I learned a lot about the ANA and the year of ethics as well as the issues relating to staffing and nurse burnout.” The American Nurses Association has designated 2015 as the “Year of Ethics,” highlighted by the release of a revised code of ethics for the profession.

I was always impressed with Mahumda’s ability to interact with my Veterans while staying professional and providing a full nursing assessment in a timely manner. Mahmuda was prepared for her clinical and was always on time. In closing, I believe that Mahumda would be an asset to the nursing field”.

The Linda Graham Award is given to a Community Public Health Nursing Student in honor of the late Prof. Linda Graham who taught Community Public Health Nursing at IPFW and helped start the annual Healthy Cities Health Fair in Fort Wayne.

Dress for Success Soon after the start of the 2015 Fall semester the Social Committee of the IPFW Nursing Department brought a new idea to the faculty.

The Woman’s Bureau of Fort Wayne has sponsored a national program Dress for Success since May, 2013. This program is on a mission to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support, and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. It educates or trains women for the job market.

It assists the women in writing resumes and letters of intent and introduces them to the process of job interviews. The one problem that women in the program voiced was, “I don’t have any proper clothes for a job interview." Part of this highly effective program is the Dress for Success store.

The Social Committee asked that the faculty and staff to donate gently used professional clothing, shoes, purses and jewelry to the program. It was

the perfect time; summer clothes were being exchanged for fall clothes in the closets. The adage, “if it hasn’t been worn in a year, give it away,” was used as an incentive to give. Giving to others can be an enhancer of morale.

Clothing on hangers was collected by the committee and was graciously accepted by the Woman’s Bureau at 2417 Fairfield Avenue; a letter of recognition and thanks was sent to the Nursing Department within a week. Giving to others provides a feeling of self-satisfaction and pride. Consider having other women’s groups on campus or in the community remember women in need of “professional clothing." These women could be graduates of IPFW and just need a step up to present themselves in the best manner. Women who look professional concurrently think professionally and their confidence is boosted.

Interprofessional Education IPFW nursing students have been active in interprofessional learning this fall semester. Undergraduate students participated with Trine University Physical therapy students to explain the role and responsibilities of their disciplines role In healthcare. They learned how to build interdependent relationships while learning from one another how to complete musculoskeletal and neuromuscular assessments physical assessments. Several undergraduate nursing students also evaluated Manchester pharmacy students while they counseled patients about medications in a simulated experience. Students from each discipline learned about one another’s role in educating patients about medication.

IPFW graduate students participated in the fall event sponsored by the Fort Wayne Area Interprofessional Education Consortium. Our students learned how to effectively use the BATHE (Background, Affect, Trouble, Handling, and Empathy) psychological interviewing model alongside occupational and physical therapy students, Medical and physician assistant students and family practice residents. Students from each discipline are randomly assigned to an interprofessional team to learn how to problem solve with the hopes of improving patient outcomes.

XI NU Chapter at Large The Xi Nu Chapter at Large Fall Research Showcase took place November 17, 2015 in the IPFW Walb Ballroom. The showcase objectives included discussion of how research, evidenced-based practice and innovation can improve patient outcomes as well as enhance the delivery of healthcare services. The event was even bigger than last year with IPFW nursing students well represented as poster presenters and members of the audience. Professor Sarah Beckman accompanied three nursing students to the International Sigma Theta Tau Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, in November. Sarah and Amy Barnes served our chapter as delegates. Amy, Jessica Maxton and Allissa Smith presented posters. Students reported on how much they gained from the experience. We are thankful to Sarah and the students for representing us so well.

tes Howl-O-Ween While Halloween is a time of playful celebration with costumes and candy, a sobering reality for some IPFW students is that financial emergencies can get in the way of their academic success. Our 2015 fun run (HowlO-Ween) dedicated its proceeds to Brown Ink Society, which supports deserving students.

The Brown Ink Society was established by Michael Downs, shortly before his death, as an effort to honor Steven Hollander, a teacher and friend of IPFW students. The society provides grants of up to $300 to academically deserving students faced with financial emergencies that would significantly, but temporarily, disrupt their studies.

Members of the society are those who have donated to the fund. Brown Ink was selected for the name since Mr. Hollander was known for using brown ink rather than blue, black, or red in his editorial comments on papers and documents.

sp tlights FORCES OF MAGNETISM and the IPFW DNP The original Magnet™ research study from 1983 identified 14 characteristics, ranging from nursing quality to management style that set apart those organizations best able to recruit and retain nurses during the nursing shortages of the 1970s and 1980s.

These characteristics became the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Forces of Magnetism that provide the current framework for the Magnet™ appraisal process. The 14 Forces of Magnetism may be thought of as attributes or results that exemplify nursing excellence.

Dr. Carol Crosby, a DNP who holds national board certification as a Nurse Administrator, has a rich and relevant expertise about the forces of magnetism. Her exemplary professional career includes service as Chief Nursing Officer at a large medical center in Virginia that became a magnet facility under her leadership. Ask Dr. Crosby about magnetism and her entire countenance lights up!

In planning possible residency activities for our specialized concentration in Transformative Leadership, Dr. Crosby, Dean Obergfell, Dr. Poling, and nursing leadership at Parkview Health (Chief Nursing Executive, Judy Boerger, and Chief Nursing Officer of Parkview Regional Medical Center, Loraine Frank- Lightfoot) are co-creating a Transdisciplinary Transformative Leadership Institute at Parkview Health.

Parkview Nurses In Pursuit of Magnet Recognition What is Magnet?

The Magnet Recognition ProgramÂŽ is a national accreditation sponsored by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The accreditation recognizes excellence in nursing clinical outcomes, patient experience and nursing engagement. At present, there are approximately 422 Magnet organizations in the United States or about 7% of all US hospitals and 4 International organizations.

Why Magnet?

Parkview Health intends to be among the best in the country and that means performing in the top decile. Magnet status fits that goal for nursing. The ANCC has provided Magnet status as platform for change within the nursing profession. ANCC seeks to elevate the practice of nursing through measurement of empirical outcomes across 49 standards and the four domains of transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice and new knowledge, innovations, and improvements. Achieving Magnet status will demonstrate that Parkview outperforms the mean in greater than 50% these standards over greater than 50% of our departments across the health system.

Does Magnet status pertain only to nursing?

While the accreditation is predominantly a nursing recognition, the requirements for collaboration and teamwork with medical staff, clinical and non-clinical co-workers make this a recognition for the system as a whole. Without a real partnership across all departments and settings, achieving Magnet status would not be possible.

IPFW and Parkview‌a partnership IPFW and Parkview Health have a long-standing relationship and shared goal of continuing to provide the best educational opportunities and clinical sites for students.

That partnership extends to programming and academic assistance in meeting the requirements of R.N. to B.S. attainment, research, and nursing residency programs.

These programs seek to advance the practice of nursing and the engagement of nurses in their practice. The support of the nursing faculty and university have been key to our success in achieving these goals.

sp tlights(continued) The IPFW Lafayette Street Family Health Clinic Deborah Baresic WHNP-BC and Linda Finke RN, PhD The IPFW Lafayette Street Family Health Clinic, affiliated with the College of Health and Human Services and the Department of Nursing, has continued its 10 year tradition of providing women’s health care to the underserved of Fort Wayne. We are federally funded from Title X. We provide services on a sliding scale or free for those who cannot pay. We also bill insurance and accept Medicaid. We have over 1000 patients and in the last fiscal year had 2331 patient encounters. Our services include yearly exams, screening for cervical and breast cancer, and sexually transmitted infections (STI). We prescribe all types of birth control, tests and treatments for STI’s, see patients for problem visits, and do pregnancy testing. Our goal is to help women be as healthy as possible and to plan when to bring children into their family. A healthy planned pregnancy helps to decrease maternal and infant mortality. We also do screening and referral for primary health care problems such as high blood pressure, cervical and breast cancer, and other health problems. We are a nurse managed clinic. Our staff includes an Executive Director, a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, a registered nurse and 2 medical assistants.

We are located at Lafayette and Pontiac in the Lafayette Street Medical Building in the underserved area of Fort Wayne. In the last fiscal year, 83% of our patients were 100% below the federal poverty level and paid nothing for their services; 33% of our patients are Hispanic and two of our staff are bilingual which really helps with communication. We also have a Health Insurance Navigator, again grant funded, to assist patients and their families find affordable health insurance.

One of our main goals this year has been to increase the knowledge in our community about the prevalence of human papilloma virus (HPV) and the importance of vaccination. This is a critical issue as 80% of people will be exposed to HPV in their lifetime which increases the risk of cervical, penile, and anal cancers. The vaccination gives boys and girls significant immunity to the virus. We are sponsoring many activities on campus and in the community related to this. We have partnered with the IPFW Center for Healthy Living, Dean of Students, Student Life, the College of Health and Human Services, and the Allen County Department of Health to hold education sessions and immunizations on the IPFW campus. We have also partnered with the YWCA and the Public Housing Authority to hold community events. Allen County has one of the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases in the state of Indiana. We do testing and treatment as well as education to prevent the spread of these infections. We also do HIV testing.

The IPFW Lafayette Street Family Health Clinic provides an important service for low-income women. We are located where our patients live and we provide culturally sensitive health care. Many of our patients have no other place to receive care and we are proud of the exceptional services we provide.
