Please welcome Karen VanGorder as the new executive director of the Division of Continuing Studies (DCS) at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW).

With Indiana leading the nation in manufacturing job growth over the past year, and with computer numerically-controlled (CNC) machines being an integral part of the manufacturing environment, the Haas Center is in high demand. IPFW students receive instruction and actual hands-on experience in learning how to use the four next-generation CNC machines provided by Haas Automation, Inc., the leading machine tool builder in the U.S. Anyone with knowledge of basic machining methods and the fundamentals of CNC machining can enroll in introductory or intermediate CNC courses at the Haas Center through the Division of Continuing Studies (see page 39). The HTEC also is available to IPFW students enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program’s course on Advanced CNC Machining (MET 44000), as well as to students involved in IPFW’s engineering and technology senior capstone projects, who use the machines for construction of prototypes and/or final mechanical designs.

Continuous Improvement Using Lean and Black Belt Six Sigma Participants should have a strong working knowledge of algebra and basic computer skills.

This course will provide current and future knowledge managers effective technology tools and skills to identify and analyze business problems, create and test solutions, and devise a plan to manage the project’s completion. Professional Photography Basics Certificate About the Instructors Jim Gabbard, lead instructor and a continuing lecturer in photography at IPFW, owns a photography studio and has been a professional photographer since 1988.

Bill Nichols has a BFA in radio, television and film, and is a former broadcast executive. He teaches the fundamentals and history of photography at IPFW.

Professional Photography Basics Certificate This series of six courses is for those who want to pursue a career in photography.

Each fall semester, a cohort begins the program and completes the courses over three semesters: • Digital SLR Camera for Emerging Professionals (Fall 2014) • Fundamentals of Portrait Photography (Fall 2014) • Photoshop for Photographers (Spring 2015) • Fine Art Photography (Spring 2015) • Marketing Your Photography (Spring 2015) • Developing Your Portfolio and Style: Final Project (Fall 2015)

A Culturally-Diverse Workplace The 21st century world seems to be getting “flatter” as we work with people from all over the world, either over the phone or face-toface. Generational Diversity This session will focus on the motivators and values of each generation in the workplace. Beginning with a brief overview of generational characteristics rooted in history and theory, you will learn techniques of communication, supervision, and successful teamwork, as well as how to work with the other generations.

Dealing with Difficult People Your staff may be employees, peers, or bosses; but whatever their titles, they can be frustrating to deal with and have a negative effect on your work life. This session will focus on identifying and understanding difficult personalities and learning methods for coping with them so that your work environment can be more productive and less stressful.

Interviewing and Selection Learn the importance of applying six structured steps to the interview process, including various questioning techniques, active listening skills, and an evaluation/ recommendation form for hiring. This course will also cover federal regulations and guidelines for interviewing. Upon completion, participants will have the skills necessary to conduct a behavior-based job interview.

Without one of them, the remaining two often are not enough to promote success. Learn to assess the needs of individuals and teams, openly communicate about those needs, and develop tools and strategies for targeted solutions.

Performance Management Performance management is a continuous cycle geared at employee development. In this session, participants will learn critical components such as developing employees, delivering timely and effective feedback through one-on-ones and other assessment tools, disciplining employees who do not meet expectations, and recognizing and rewarding those employees who do meet expectations.

Conflict Management Conflict is often seen as a negative in the workplace because it can create discomfort among colleagues and employees. This session will introduce you to the building blocks of conflict management based on problem-solving and decision-making techniques and teach you how to use conflict resolution to energize your workforce.

Critical Thinking: Decision Making and Problem Solving Learn the process of critical thinking to analyze, compare and evaluate a variety of solutions, improving your ability to make the best decision. Using case studies, you will practice and acquire critical thinking skills by asking questions and considering multiple options, and learn how to facilitate an effective brainstorming session.

Communicating the Strategic Plan Learn how to use tools such as a SWOT analysis and a strategic communication plan to help share your own goals as well as those of the company. In this introductory course, you will learn basic definitions and concepts for planning and controlling the flow of materials into, through and out of an organization. You also will gain an understanding of the fundamental relationships among the activities that occur in the supply chain from suppliers to customers.

Personal Trainer Certification Come join this fun profession and be a part of what Fortune magazine and ABCNEWS. com state as the fourth hottest job in the U.S. The average national pay for a certified trainer is $34 an hour. Employers such as 24 Hour Fitness, LA Fitness, and Gold’s Gyms are just a few of the club groups that seek out our graduates. Whether for a career move or for your own personal knowledge, get all the information you’ll need to become a Certified Personal Trainer. CPR/AED certification is required (but not included in this course) in order to receive this certification.

This 62-hour course is comprised of 16 hours of lecture, 16 hours of practical training, and a required 30-hour internship. The course prepares you for success with coverage of several key topics, including biomechanics, exercise physiology, fitness testing, equipment usage, and health assessment. This program is offered in partnership with the World Instructor Training Schools and is unique in that it provides both comprehensive, practical training and internship components.

People training in this technique learn to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to defuse the situation. Professional fluoride treatment is recommended for dental patients to prevent cavities and to remineralize weakened enamel. The course will cover the application of fluoride rinses, gels, and varnish.

Pharmacy Technician

This online course prepares students to take the American Health Information Management Association’s official certification exam to become a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). This program covers advanced ICD-9 coding procedures and helps students meet the challenge of today’s changing standards while learning and improving their coding skills.

This nationally-recognized Pharmacy Technician online certification program teaches the skills needed to gain employment as an entry-level pharmacy technician position in either a hospital or retail setting. IPFW Japanese Saturday School (JSS) for non-Japanese-speaking students

The IPFW Japanese Saturday School (JSS) is available to area residents of any age, nationality, or ability for instruction in Japanese language and culture. The JSS is certified by the Japanese Ministry of Education and Foreign Affairs with a primary focus to help children of Japanese nationals who are working in the region keep pace with their former classmates in Japan. It also serves adult workers at area Japanese companies and their family members.

Japanese Conversation: Beginner I A beginning-level course for students who are interested in Japanese. This course teaches fundamental conversation through structural learning and activities. Some basic grammar and key phrases will be taught along with basic writing. During this semester, students will focus on Hiragana characters.

Korean Saturday School: Traditional This school provides education in Korean language for preschool and K–12 school children according to the general curriculum prescribed by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology of Korea.

The school will offer Korean, Korean-American (including Korean adoptees), and American children opportunities to understand Korean culture and to gain cross-cultural experiences by teaching them in Korean.

Summer French Language and Culture Immersion Become immersed in the study of the French language and French-speaking cultures for five consecutive days, seven hours per day. The course will be taught entirely in French and students will commit to communicate exclusively in French.

The program is open to students with a wide range of abilities to comprehend and communicate in French. You will spend significant time with others at a similar level and will gain skills in all five language areas: speaking, writing, reading, listening, and cultural understanding. The primary focus will be on listening and speaking proficiency through interaction with other participants, instructors, and native speakers. This course is designed for those seeking the basic skills of reading, writing and speaking the language after having completed the introductory Script Course. This course has 26 lessons that feature greetings, questions, and daily communication. Understanding and use of FMEA increases productivity and predicts potential process and design problems. This program will review effective methods of performing product and process FMEA analysis. Learn how FMEAs and control plans work together to address potential failure modes and to focus on high-risk areas.

Based on the AIAG Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) manual, this program introduces participants to measuring and gaging systems. 2015 Appleseed Writing Project Summer Youth Writing Camps at IPFW

The 2015 Summer Youth Writing Camps are available to students in grades 4 through 9 and will culminate with an open house reading event where students will present their writings to the public. No previous creative writing experience is necessary—only a desire to write and a willingness to participate in the daily activities. Camps meet at the IPFW Campus with transportation provided by parents or caregivers.

Middle School Writing Camp

Open to students entering grades 4, 5, or 6 in fall 2015.

Open to students entering grades 7, 8, or 9 in fall 2015.

Students will be guided through engaging activities and collaboration in a supportive environment, starting with choosing a topic, and leading into sustained writing time, followed by revision, editing, publishing, and sharing. Students will emerge with a better understanding of the writing process and the various writing contexts.

This camp is designed for students who enjoy the experiences of writing in a noncompetitive, nonjudgmental environment where they will be able to allow their pens to follow their hearts. Included will be an introduction to poetry, narratives, and short fiction, along with such topics as voice, character, and narrative. Students will also learn how to critique, revise, and publish their finished products.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions Classroom locations are e-mailed or mailed to students. The information desks in Kettler Hall, Helmke Library, and the Walb Student Union can help you identify the building and room where your class will be meeting. The Police and Safety office also has access to room information.

Parking — You do not need a permit to park in any student parking area on the IPFW campus. However, parking in an “A” lot (green lines) or restricted area requires a permit unless marked “Open after 5 p.m.”

Continuing Professional Education Credits for CPAs IPFW is approved by the Indiana State Board of Accountancy to offer courses that qualify for CPE credit. When registering, please indicate that you are pursuing a CPE credit course for proper documentation. The recommended hours of CPE credit are in accordance with the Indiana State Board of Accountancy for specific courses.

Books, if required, may be purchased in the Continuing Education section of Follett’s IPFW Bookstore located in Walb Student Union, or online at www.efollett.com.

Students with Disabilities — If you have or acquire a disability and would like information about special services and accommodations that may be available to you, you are urged to contact Services for Students with Disabilities (Walb 113, 260-481-6657, voice/TTY). Tax Credits for Tuition and Fees — Tax laws provide a Lifelong Learning Credit that allows eligible taxpayers to claim a tax credit on IPFW Continuing Studies courses. These expenses generally include any required enrollment fees, but exclude books, equipment, etc.

For more information, consult your accountant or the IRS. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) — A CEU is a nationally recognized measurement of professional development training and continuing education in specialty areas. Many professional disciplines require a specified number of CEUs for members to maintain their license or certification. Typically, 10 instructional contact hours are required for one (1.0) CEU, where a contact hour is 50 minutes of instruction. CEUs do not apply to college degree requirements.

Educational Loans for Personal and Professional Development Noncredit students enrolled through Continuing Studies have the option to apply for alternative educational loans through private lenders to cover costs of noncredit courses.
