IMPROVING BUSINESS PERFORMANCE What is an Adviser? This is someone who is registered to advise organisations on the Investors in People framework. They encourage clients to work with Investors in People by showing the value and benefits that it offers and the positive impact it can have on organisational performance. They help clients to find a match between the range of topics covered in the Investors in People framework and their business priorities. They help them achieve the Standard – and beyond if appropriate – whilst ensuring the organisation sees real, tangible and cost-effective benefits. They establish a business partner relationship and provide guidance, support and specialist services as appropriate for each client. This relationship may already exist and Investors in People may become an integrated theme across projects and clients they are already working with. Whatever their specialism and interest in Investors in People, they regard it as a must have for successful organisations and deliver it with skill and passion.

What makes the ideal Adviser? Advisers decide to add Investors in People to their portfolio because they can see the potential for a flexible and common-sense framework in their business improvement work. They come from a wide range of backgrounds including those who saw the impact that Investors in People had on their own organisation and were inspired to go out and bring the same benefits to others. This is a highly responsible and respected role and standards are high, so you will need the right blend of skills and experience to succeed: 1. Able to build and manage relationships at all levels These are not roles for the shy or retiring; they are for good communicators who communicate effectively with people at all levels within organisations. You need to be convincing, to be able to quickly gain people’s trust and to influence their behaviour.


IMPROVING BUSINESS PERFORMANCE 2. Professional and knowledgeable The focus is on helping organisations to succeed. You must be credible, knowledgeable and consistent. Clients want intelligent advice and insight from someone experienced - not only in Investors in People - but in how effective organisations can succeed and manage change by linking business objectives, structure and culture with people management, learning and development. 3. Self-reliant and independent Roles like these take drive. You need to be a self-starter, effective at planning and both working alone and in teams.

How do you become an Adviser? To become an Investors in People Specialist, candidates must undertake development, which includes training, practical experience, a series of assignments and a sign-off or ‘registration’ process. Typically this takes six - nine months provided candidates have a number of projects and clients through which they can acquire the necessary practical experience. This is a fully integrated programme that provides knowledge and support and opportunities to apply and demonstrate the requisite skills, understanding and behaviours. The programme is designed to take candidates through a development journey based on the Investors in People Specialist Capability Framework, to a point where Investors in People International, with whom they will be registered, has confidence in their ability to maximise the impact of Investors in People. The overview below illustrates the main components of the programme. Training for Specialists is specifically about understanding and using the Investors in People framework. It assumes knowledge and/or experience in the following areas and no further ‘theory’ will be taught. The core training will focus on the application of these, in an Investors in People context. management experience and knowledge of current HR practice. good and practised interpersonal skills. a range of practical skills including: report writing, presentation skills, communication skills (written & verbal), interviewing skills and experience, project management ability and knowledge of different systems, selling and influencing skills and knowledge of different approaches, consultancy skills and knowledge of different methods, feedback skills, Consultancy track record – applied internally or externally.


IMPROVING BUSINESS PERFORMANCE In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate that they have firm opportunities to promote and deliver Investors in People to existing or potential clients. These pre-requisites will be applied when applications are received and considered by Investors in People International.

2012 Opportunities to Train A three-day training workshop is the first stage of the development programme, providing the knowledge required, prior to candidates practising and undertaking a range of assignments. By the end of the course you will: be familiar with the full Investors in People framework and how it is implemented. know how to establish client’s business priorities and link these to the framework. understand the critical factors in supporting organisations to achieve and maintain Investors in People recognition.
