any different techniques are used to prepare a surface for effective corrosion protection. Sandblasting is the most common. This can be either conventional, or low pressure wet abrasive sandblasting. Other material used for blasting includes high pressure water (hydroblasting), compressed air and bicarbonate of soda based media (soda blasting), compressed air with carbon dioxide (dry ice blasting), and even a vacuum. Why have so many methods been developed? Mainly to overcome the major disadvantage of sandblasting: The vast quantity of dust produced. Apart from the health and safety issues of clouds of dust – not only for the operators but people in the immediate vicinity – dust disposal is costly. The cost and disposal of the abrasive also has to be taken into account.

er preparare una superficie al fine di ottenere una protezione anticorrosiva efficace si possono utilizzare molte tecniche differenti. La sabbiatura è il metodo più comune: può essere convenzionale oppure a umido a bassa pressione. Altri materiali utilizzati per la sabbiatura sono l’acqua ad alta pressione (idrosabbiatura), aria compressa e abrasivi a base di bicarbonato di sodio (soda blasting), aria compressa con anidride carbonica (sabbiatura con ghiaccio secco), e anche il vuoto. Perché sono stati sviluppati così tanti metodi? Principalmente per superare il più grande svantaggio della sabbiatura: l’elevata quantità di polvere prodotta. Le nuvole di polvere, oltre a presentare criticità legate alla salute e alla sicurezza per gli operatori e per le persone nelle immediate vicinanze, sono costose da smaltire. Inoltre, è necessario prendere in considerazione anche il costo e lo smaltimento dell’abrasivo.
