ith the new European standard EN45545 in force as of 2013, the possibility of using plastic materials in the rail sector is evaluated through a study on flammability, toxicity, and optical density of fumes. On the basis of these results, a risk index (“hazard level” or HL) is assigned, which can take values ranging from 1 to 3. Maximum safety is indicated by HL3, this parameter ensures: • self-extinguishment of material according to the strictest limits imposed on the limit value of oxygen (LOI) and flame resistance; • low fume toxicity and opacity, which are critical factors in the case of escape from a confined environment where a fire has broken out. LATI considers rail transport as a strategic sector for the future, and so it further focused on materials to be used for live electrical parts in rail vehicles. The company is therefore pleased to announce the promotion to the maximum HL3 performance level of three self-extinguishing compounds that are already well known in other sectors: • LATAMID 66 H2 G/25-V0HF1: PA66, 25% glass fiber, self-extinguishing • LATAMID 6 H2 G/30-V0HF1: PA6, 30% glass fiber, self-extinguishing • LATAMID 6 H-V0: PA6, self-extinguishing. This is a particularly important result, because in all three cases a flame retardant, halogen and red phosphorus-free compound is proposed, fulfilling the strictest criteria of respect for the environment and human health. Besides outstanding flame behavior, the three compounds also feature excellent processability and interesting mechanical and electrical properties. All approved compounds feature very good toughness and impact resistance, allowing interesting elongation values as well, all factors required for the development of those projects where some degree of flexibility is necessary. These newly “promoted” grades add to the already HL3 rated LATI compounds, namely LATAMID 66 H2 G/25-V0CT4 (PA66, 25% glass fiber) and LARTON GCE/650 (PPS, 65% glass fiber and mineral filler mix). on il nuovo standard europeo EN45545, attivo a partire dal 2013, la possibilità di impiegare materiali plastici nel settore ferroviario viene valutata attraverso uno studio sull’infiammabilità, sulla tossicità e sulla densità ottica dei fumi. Sulla base di questi risultati viene assegnato un indice di rischio (“hazard level”, o HL) che può assumere i valori 1, 2 o 3. La massima sicurezza è indicata da HL3, parametro che assicura: • l’autoestinguenza del materiale secondo i restrittivi limiti imposti sul valore di limite di ossigeno (LOI) e resistenza alla fiamma; • la ridotta tossicità e opacità dei fumi, entrambi fattori critici nel caso di fuga da un ambiente confinato in cui sia presente un incendio. È quindi con soddisfazione che annuncia la promozione al livello di massima prestazione HL3 di tre compound autoestinguenti già ben affermati in altri ambiti industriali: • LATAMID 66 H2 G/25-V0HF1: PA66, 25% fibra di vetro, autoestinguente • LATAMID 6 H2 G/30-V0HF1: PA6, 30% fibra di vetro, autoestinguente • LATAMID 6 H-V0: PA6, autoestinguente. Si tratta di un risultato di particolare importanza perchè in tutti i tre casi viene proposto un compound flame retardant senza alogeni né fosforo rosso, quindi in linea con i più severi criteri di rispetto dell’ambiente e della salute umana. Alle ottime prestazioni alla fiamma, i tre compound affiancano anche eccellente processabilità e interessanti caratteristiche meccaniche ed elettriche. Tutte le formulazioni si distinguono inoltre per la buona resistenza all’impatto e la più che valida deformabilità, fattori che permettono finalmente la messa a punto anche di quei progetti in cui è necessaria una certa flessibilità. I gradi appena “promossi” si affiancano agli altri compound LATI già saldamente ancorati al rating HL3, ossia il LATAMID 66 H2 G/25V0CT4 (PA66, 25% fibra vetro) e il LARTON GCE/650 (PPS, 65% misto fibra vetro e carica minerale).
