eciding which materials to use on a construction project is based on several factors. The first considerations to be made are related to the design, the purpose of the building, the limitations deriving from the location where the building will be erected (such as environmental conditions) as well, of course, as the cost-effectiveness and technical performance of the materials employed. Sometimes, though, other factors come into play. The design, for example, can be focused on achieving a specific goal – for example, representing a given meaning or value – concepts that must perforce be reflected in the selection of the materials from which their strength might descend provided the materials reach perfect harmony. This article details two cases where COR-TEN® steel was used following this philosophy and maintaining a common thread and, in so doing, merging past and present into a single project. In the first case, weathering steel was exploited to recoup an old structure and transform it into a museum with a contemporary design – the Museo del Tabacco di Pontecorvo (the Tobacco Museum of Pontecorvo), where the brown colouring taken on by the COR-TEN® steel after oxidisation evokes the colours of the dried tobacco leaves, thereby bonding the structure to its contents while respecting the collective identity of the inhabitants of Pontecorvo. In the second case, COR-TEN® was used to rebuild “Pont Trencat” – a Roman-era bridge in Sant Celoni, Catalonia (Spain): COR-TEN® steel embodied the ideal solution for making the bridge accessible

a scelta dei materiali da utilizzare in un’opera edile è il risultato di diversi fattori. I primi da tenere in considerazione sono legati alla progettazione, allo scopo della costruzione, alle limitazioni poste dal territorio in cui sorgerà l’opera (come le condizioni ambientali) e naturalmente all’efficienza dei costi e alle prestazioni tecniche dei materiali. Ci sono casi, però, in cui intervengono anche altri elementi. Il design, per esempio, può essere legato al raggiungimento di un particolare obiettivo, come la rappresentazione di un significato preciso o di un valore, concetto che deve passare per forza dalla scelta dei materiali dai quali può trarre la sua forza se questi raggiungono tra loro una perfetta armonia. In quest’articolo sono descritti due casi in cui l’acciaio COR-TEN® è stato utilizzato seguendo questa filosofia e mantenendo un aspetto in comune, riuscendo a fondere in una sola opera storia e modernità. Nella prima storia, infatti, l’acciaio patinabile è stato sfruttato per recuperare una vecchia struttura e trasformarla in un museo dal disegno contemporaneo, il Museo del Tabacco di Pontecorvo, in cui il cromatismo bruno che il COR-TEN® ottiene dopo il processo di ossidazione ricorda il colore delle foglie di tabacco essiccate, legando così la struttura a ciò che contiene rispettando l’identità collettiva dei pontecorvesi. Nel secondo caso, invece, il COR-TEN® è stato utilizzato per ricostruire un ponte di età romana, il “Pont Trencat” a Sant Celoni, Catalogna (Spagna), dove quest’acciaio ha rappresentato la so-
