What is it?

An innovative programme to present, in the first person, the ‘life stories’ of young people from immigrant/minority/vulnerable/at risk communities through the methodology of personal storytelling, conceptualized from the Ubuntu philosophy. It uses digital and oral communication tools, project management and self-knowledge and helps promote democratic values, including the protection of human rights, minority rights and the fight against discrimination.

It promotes good governance guided by the Common Good, where everyone has a place and contributes to a fairer and more cohesive society, a prerequisite for sustainable development. The project to involve young people from vulnerable contexts strengthens cohesion through a methodology that enhances their participation and encourages integration. Cultural diversity and gender equality are common to all activities.

Goals

• Value the social/cultural roots of youngsters, giving meaning to their identity; • Strengthen self -esteem and self-confidence; • Promote their self- knowledge encouraging a conscious and integrated reading of their life paths; • Project the future from life experience; • Train for oral communication and multimedia support; • Train for the development of a project that requires design, planning, presentation and evaluation.

How it works

• Methodology of personal storytelling, allied to the Ubuntu philosophy ‘I am because you are’; • 4/5 day workshop divided into various modules; • Challenge to young people: development of their life story in oral and digital format; • Result: a video and an oral presentation to the other participants and guests; • Support material developed for the young participants and professionals/educational agents, thereby making replication of the workshop possible.

Beneficiaries

Workshops are aimed at young people from 14 to 25 years of age from vulnerable/at risk contexts, immigrant, refugee and minority communities. They will have often experienced situations of intolerance, hate language, extreme violence and related crimes, racism and xenophobia, abuse and sexual harassment, domestic violence (mostly against women), irregular migration, trafficking, etc.

Young people from secondary schools and professional associations of immigrants, refugees and juveniles, charities, children’s homes, educational centres, social centres and the Escolhas programme (a government programme whose mission is to promote the social inclusion of children and youth from vulnerable socio-economic contexts).

Partnerships

Strong partnerships with organizations from various fields, creating an efficient network of complementary support. The concern with gender equality is common across the project. 114 workshops will be held covering: 1725 young people, 193 specialists/education officers and 110 institutions.
