Tom Tourville and John Senn host the Iowa Great Lakes Recording Studio’s 35th Anniversary Reunion Concert.

The success of the event encourages Tourville and Senn to make plans for an association.

1997

The Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association hosts their first ever induction, inducting eight members into their newly formed Hall of Fame.

2001

The Association hires their first paid employee, Doris Welle, as their executive director.

2003

The Association unveils the Hall of Fame & Museum, connected to the Roof Garden, with a soft opening the weekend of the Winter Games in January.

2004

The Association starts the concert series Rock The Roof on Thursday nights, starting a new trend for weekday concerts.

2015

The Association holds their first year of Battle of the Bands (now Iowa Rocks Talent). Finalists have the chance to win recording time with Catamount Studios and the opportunity to play at the annual induction concert.

2018

In the wake of construction on the new Roof Garden, the museum is moved into a newly renovated space three times the size of the original museum.

2019

Renovation is completed on the new Rock ‘n Roll Museum & Hall Of Fame with Howard Kramer, formerly the curatorial director of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland, heading the project.

2022

This year, we celebrate the 25th year that the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association has been in operation. Celebrating the legacy and inspiring the future of rock ‘n’ roll music in Iowa.

OUR STORY

The Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association was founded in 1997 by Tom Tourville and John Senn. Their dream was to honor Iowa rock ‘n’ roll music and those musicians who entertain us. They had a shared vision of building an association that would tell the stories of Iowa musicians and those who helped support the music they both loved. Their legacy is the preservation of the contributions of everyone inducted into the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association’s Hall of Fame and its educational outreach to young and old alike. The Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association will be forever grateful to these two men who manifest our mission statement to “Celebrate the legacy and inspire the future of rock and roll music in Iowa.”

HALL OF FAME & MUSEUM

For 15 Years, the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association’s Hall of Fame was housed within the Roof Garden Ballroom. In 2018, the Association packed up its exhibits and moved a short distance away to the newly expanded Maritime Museum. The following year, renovations were finished under the careful and expert supervision of Howard Kramer, formerly the curatorial director of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. That spring, the Association unveiled the world-class museum here today for the first time.

Our Hall of Fame & Museum features informative exhibits regarding the rich rock ‘n’ roll history found in our state.

Patrons can view rock ‘n’ roll artifacts, peruse interactive displays and listening stations, and watch enlightening, brief movies in our two theaters.

SAVE IOWA STORIES

The Save Iowa Stories Database Project seeks to video each of our inductees and then implement a database that will be accessible by the public in both our museum and online. We also are working to get this cloud database linked to the Library of Congress, allowing genealogy searches to find our database when people are using software like Ancestry. Our goal is to capture these stories and save them forever. With more than 500 entities and 2,000 individual inductees in our Hall of Fame database, this is no small task and will be a multi-year undertaking. If you or your family would like to contribute information or donate, both would be greatly appreciated!

IMAGINE IOWA ROCK ‘N ROLL PLAZA AND PATIO

Help us create a new plaza to super-serve our community and attract tourism. Plans have been made to renovate the grassy area by the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll and Maritime Museums to expand our current patio space. A removable stage will be added with lighting, sound, and, most importantly, an attractive, retractable canopy to provide shade during warm summer days. This new patio space adjacent to our museum will expand our event capabilities, providing a new multi-use venue for many community events.

Outside the patio, the renovated plaza will feature unique rock ‘n’ roll exhibits including statues of rock legends and informational placards to educate the public. Designs are currently underway in cooperation with Arnolds Park Amusement Park and the Maritime Museum.

Annually we received more than 21,000 visitors to our museum, not including those who came to our Rock the Patio shows. The Imagine Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Plaza and Patio will become a hot spot in Dickinson County, drawing people from all over and bolstering further economic development. Our multi-use space can be used—either rented out or donated—for widespread community events including anniversary parties, birthday parties, reunions, graduation parties, corporate functions, movie nights, and so much more.

We honor the accomplishments of the Hall of Fame Class of 2024 and all those individuals who have contributed to our rich musical history. As a business counselor with the Northeast Iowa Small Business Development Center (SBDC), he works with business startups and existing businesses to be more successful in Dubuque, Clayton, and Delaware Counties of Iowa. Welcome to the Class of 2024! The past year has been one of transition and growth for the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Association. The association has said farewell to old friends, welcomed new faces, navigated economic challenges, and embraced fresh ideas. Through all the triumphs and hardships that so many of us face, one thing has remained clear: Our response to change is what truly defines us.

I’ve witnessed incredible resilience among those connected to our association. It has been inspiring to see strength as you have come together, supported each other, and found joy in sharing music through it all. As we celebrate this weekend, remember:We are here “All Because of You!” We celebrate your love for music, your commitment to honoring the musicians who have shaped our world, and your desire to connect with others who share this passion. Your generosity, your donations of time and resources, and your profound love for music drive us forward to a bright future.

We are here to honor the past. We capture and share the stories of past artists, highlighting their perseverance and the impact of their work. Their journeys teach us about courage and the enduring power of music. We honor their contributions and vow to keep their legacies alive for future generations to appreciate.

We are here to inspire artists. We remain committed to supporting emerging talents in the music industry by providing opportunities and fostering connections. Our goal is to nurture the next generation of artists, helping them to flourish and succeed.

We are here to educate youth. As an educator for over 31 years, this aspect of our mission is particularly close to my heart. We are excited to partner with schools and youth organizations to introduce young people to the world of music. Through career development, skill-building, and fostering a love for music, we aim to make a meaningful impact on their lives. Watch in the coming months for news on how we will connect with kids.

In the short time that I have been a part of this association, I have been encouraged by the possibilities of what

we can accomplish together. It has been wonderful to be a part of the museum’s popularity, with visitors coming from near and far. This is a testament to the strong cultural presence that has been established, and I am excited to contribute to its continued success. I believe in music’s unique power to unite people, and we can celebrate that power through our initiatives.

I extend my deepest gratitude to those who have contributed their talents to our success. Our Board of Directors and Regional Consultants bring invaluable wisdom and dedication. LAKE PATROL BAND

The Lake Patrol was formed in the summer of 1983 by three long-time Northwest Iowa musicians, Tim Horsman from Okoboji, Mick Buckley from Spirit Lake, and Dave Chapman from Spencer. The name of the band was chosen as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the law enforcement officers who patrolled the waters of the Iowa great lakes region at the time—commonly referred to as the “Lake Patrol.” Horsman says, “We checked with some of the members of the lake’s law enforcement, and they thought it would be fun to have a rock ‘n’ roll band named after their organization.”

The trio drew on their collective backgrounds with previous, well-known groups from the area: Horsman with The Fabulous Traidmarx and the Upson Downs; Buckley with The Sticks & Stones and The Dentairs; and Chapman with The Koats of Male, Spectum 70, and The Gas Company.

All had performed throughout the Midwest in clubs and ballrooms in Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Missouri with their previous bands including multiple times at the legendary Roof Garden in Okoboji.

Enjoying immediate success as a good-time party band, they worked as a trio for the first year with Tim playing keyboards, Mick on drums, and Dave laying down the bottom with electric bass. All three contributed vocals to the mix. The following year, another long-time friend and seasoned musician, Joe Cuttell (The Prince and the

Paupers, Dentairs and Gas Company), joined the group on guitar and vocals.

Always disciples of rhythm and blues, the Lake Patrol continues to play dance music. “If you can’t dance to it, we don’t play it,” says Buckley.

The Lake Patrol has ventured into the recording studio twice over the years in addition to producing a live album.

For the past four decades, many other notable musicians have played with the band. In addition to the early lineup of Horsman, Buckley, Chapman, and Cuttell, the 2024 inductees also include Jerry Jones (bass), Brian Moore (saxophone), Chuck Cihlar (guitar/vocals), Becky Thoreson, (flute/harmonies), Bob York (Hammond organ), John Senn (guitar/vocals), and Terry Klein (guitar/vocals). Most are Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association Hall of Fame inductees from previous years.

After more than 40 years, the band is still at it. The current lineup consists of founders Horsman and Buckley, near-original member Cuttell, plus Jerry Jones (bass) and Chuck Cihlar (guitar).

As they celebrate more than four decades of unbroken blues-based rockin’ and rollin’, they look forward to continuing the journey.

JOHNNY TRASH BAND

Johnny Trash, the iconic Dubuque band, stands as a testament to rock ‘n’ roll’s enduring power and camaraderie.

After three decades of electrifying performances, Johnny Trash retired in 2023, leaving behind a legacy of hard-hitting rock from the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s. Known for their faithful renditions of AC/DC, Kiss, Judas Priest, and Ozzy Osbourne, they brought the big arena sounds to the local music scene.

Johnny Trash’s story began in the summer of 1993, when drummer Tony Rokusek left the band Crysis and, along with guitarist Dave Adams, sought to start a new project.

Coincidentally, Tony’s brother Gene “Geno” Rokusek, fresh from his guitarist stint with Vaduz and Rock Pig (from which the Pig Pen bar in Clinton was eventually named), was also looking for a new musical endeavor. And as fate would have it, vocalist Craig Ihm’s band, Snidely Whiplash, had split. With original bassist Mark Whitaker, the quintet quickly came together to form Johnny Trash. With a New Year’s Eve show on the books but no name for the marquee, Mark Whitaker came up with “Johnny Trash,” inspired by Johnny Cash, and it stuck for 30 years.

Bassist Gary Newsom, who joined the band three years in, and second guitarist Steve Napolitano, the “new guy”

since 2015, eventually rounded out the lineup with their exceptional skills.

Johnny Trash’s presence was a staple at major Dubuquearea venues and festivals. Their connection with fans was deep, with many becoming lifelong friends and even getting tattoos in tribute to the band. They frequently played at events like Summer’s Last Blast and shared stages with rock legends including Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Warrant, Tesla, Firehouse, Halestorm, Quiet Riot, Slaughter, Puddle of Mudd, and Jackyl, just to name a few.

Throughout their career, Johnny Trash distinguished themselves with a setlist that went beyond the usual hits, diving deep into the discographies of their favorite bands.

While they played popular tracks, their commitment to performing lesser-known gems earned them a dedicated following.

Even in retirement, Johnny Trash remains a cherished part of Dubuque’s rock history. Their influence and the joy they brought to fans are a testament to their remarkable journey—a journey defined by rock ‘n’ roll passion, lasting friendships, and an unwavering dedication to the music they loved.

members and began mixing acoustic and electric music and touring extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada.

In 1981, they traveled to Nashville and recorded with legendary steel guitar player and producer Pete Drake. A few months later, they were signed as recording artists on RCA Records Mexico and recorded two albums in Mexico City, produced by Tony de la Barreda, the former bass player for the group Canned Heat.

The Ramblers were signed with RCA from 1981 to 1985 and did four tours of Mexico including recording sessions with Capitol-EMI. Their fourth tour was part of a cultural exchange program with the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, who hosted the concert at the Benjamin Franklin Auditorium for embassy staff and their families, along with high-level government officials of Mexico and their families too.

In 1983, The Ozone Ramblers played a benefit concert in Fort Madison to raise money to help save the town’s annual 4th of July fireworks celebration which went on to become the annual event known as Riverfest. Throughout the ‘80s, the band made more trips to Nashville to perform and record, and in 1986, The Ozone Ramblers recorded their third album, “River Rock.” In 1987, when Marlboro staged a Battle of the Bands, the Ramblers competed in Des Moines and won for the state of Iowa. In 1988, the band won the Iowa state finals of the True Value Country Showdown and returned to Nashville to record again with Pete Drake shortly before he passed away.

Later that year, they returned to record their fourth album, “Full Circle,” that, just like “River Rock,” was produced by Johnny Drake and Greg Kane and released on their own Indie label, Catfish Dancin’ Records.

The Ozone Ramblers’ popular annual reunion concerts continued every year through the ‘90s and 2000s, which included setting attendance records for the Catfish Bend Casino’s Rock The Dock concert series in 2002 and 2003.

In 2016, they were the headliner for the rebirth of Riverfest in their beloved Fort Madison.

THE OZONE RAMBLERS BAND

Founded in Fort Madison in January 1978, The Ozone Ramblers started performing with four members playing bluegrass music. In 1980, the band reformed with six

“Since 1978 when The Ozone Ramblers started up in Fort Madison, we’ve always done our best to represent our community and our state in a way that would make everyone proud to know us and support our Iowa homegrown river rock music. We’ve stood on stages all over North America, from northern Canada to southern Mexico, all over the U.S., and everywhere we’ve traveled, we’ve proudly let them know we’re an Iowa band.”

JASON REED & KEROSENE BAND

In 1996, Jason Reed and his band Kerosene started a remarkable journey that deserves recognition in Iowa’s music landscape and beyond.

Reed says that from the beginning, the mission was clear: “I wanted a great band made of great friends who were also great musicians. These are the guys who took my music from Massena, Iowa to Milan, Italy and back again.”

Kerosene’s original members include Jason Reed (songwriter/lead vocals/guitar, Creston), Tom, “Tricky” Amdor (bass guitar/vocals, Creston), Rick Hoadley (drums/percussion, Greenfield), and Don “Rotten” Reineke (lead guitar/ multi-instrumentalist, Burwell, Nebraska and Massena).

Kerosene recorded their debut album, “Highway,” in 1996 at Juniors Motel in Otho. Soon after, they discovered a growing fanbase in Italy which led to a European tour.

Upon their return home, they found themselves following up with a U.S. tour. During this run, they performed with artists such as Joe Diffie, Pat Green, Jack Ingram, Todd Snider, James McMurtry, the Drive-by Truckers, Edwin McCain, Dan Baird, Mark Stuart of the Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, Malcolm Holcomb, and more.

After much TV and radio exposure, Reed returned back to Junior’s Motel with a different cast of band mates to record a majority of their second album, “Iowana.” This version of Kerosene included long-time friends Ky Haub (drums/vocals/arrangement, Dayton) and Tom Simes

(bass guitar, Council Bluffs). The remainder of the tracks were recorded in Nashville with the addition of players such as Mike Daly (multi-instrumentalist/record producer/songwriter) who has played with Hank Williams Jr., Whiskeytown, and Pat Green’s band. “Iowana” also included contributions from guitarist Will Kimbrough who played with Jimmy Buffett and Todd Snider.

Kerosene’s body of work caught the attention of country music artist Rick Vincent, “Vinny.” This led to more U.S. and European tours. With momentum behind them, Kerosene rode the wave into their third album, “Smithville.” Following that tour, Reed took some time off to create his album, “Songs for Bruno,” which was released exclusively in Europe.

Though Reed performs primarily as a solo acoustic act these days, he stays in contact and remains involved in various projects with his band mates from Kerosene. Other Kerosene members that Jason has recorded, performed, and toured with since 1996 include Jason Kadiwhompus (drums, Des Moines), Darren Mathews (lead guitar, Des Moines), Dennis White (steel guitar/banjo/fiddle, Bedford), and Eric Nelson (lead guitar, Red Oak).

In 2024, Reed released a live album on the Italian label New Shot Records. It features many of the songs that have defined Jason Reed and Kerosene’s long and illustrious career.

GHOSTSHIP BAND

GhostShip was originally formed by Jarrod Paulsen (drummer) and Rick Moore (guitar) in 1998. Paulsen and Moore enlisted bass player Eric Wyant and guitar player/singer DJ Trout, and the band began rehearsals. GhostShip played a few shows around Sioux City before, tragically, Eric passed away. After some time to mourn the loss of their friend and bandmate, GhostShip picked back up without Trout and enlisted the services of Dan Loofe who had been the lead singer in Rick’s former band, Mental Lapse. Moore, Paulsen, and Loofe then started to look for a suitable bass player. After several auditions, they made an offer to Ahron Jurney, who accepted. Rehearsals began right away, and the band quickly gelled.

GhostShip continued as a five-piece band for the next several years, playing shows all over the region and was voted one of Siouxland’s favorite rock bands many times by the readers of “Weekender Magazine” (at last count, 19 times through 2023). In 2013, they went back into the studio and recorded their second full-length studio album titled “Etched in Stone.” In 2015, they decided to bring on an additional guitar player and tapped longtime friend and former guitarist for Threatenol, Chuck Woll, for this position. They have been a six-piece band since, with current members Jarrod Paulsen (drums), Rick Moore (lead guitar), Dan Loofe (vocals), Dan Wozny (vocals), Barry Hodges (bass), and Chuck Woll (guitar).

GhostShip went into the studio in 2003 to record their debut full-length CD titled “The Debauchery.” In 2006, bassist Ahron Jurney decided to move to Austin, Texas to pursue other interests, and auditions were held to find his replacement. Barry Hodges, previous bass player for several popular bands in the area, won the spot and started rehearsing with the band. In 2007, second vocalist Dan Wozny, formally of Street Legal, joined the band to add another vocal to the mix.

Over the last 25 years, they have played hundreds of shows in Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Minnesota, and they have a fan base around the world. They have opened for national touring acts that include Great White, Jackyl, Quiet Riot, LA Guns, Slaughter, Joey Belladonna (Anthrax), Lynch Mob, BulletBoys, Faster Pussycat, Gin Blossoms, Tesla, Skid Row, Head East, Black Oak Arkansas, and more. Their music is been played on terrestrial and internet radio stations across the world.

LABYRINTH BAND

Labyrinth’s origin can be traced back to Pella and the 1978–79 Central College jazz band rhythm section’s first rehearsal when Chris Hopkins, Matt Bell, and Craig Jones decided to explore the rock ‘n’ roll genre as well.

There were several false starts until the first stable version emerged which included Randy Wadle and Doug McCaulley around fall of 1979.

This fully functioning, Phase 1 version had relative success playing the high school and college dance circuit with the occasional club thrown in, employing a song list that consisted of largely mainstream rock covers. As all members were college students, engagements were limited to weekends and rarely exceeded a 100-mile radius of Pella, but several members had an eye on a possible professional music career after graduation. This, indeed, was the catalyst that lead to membership reassignment and the emergence of Labyrinth’s Phase 2 and most successful incarnation.

As Randy, Matt, and Craig graduated and embarked on their respective careers of choice, the open positions were filled with Jeff Knight and Chris Scavo around 1983. This quartet had a curious chemistry coupled with a collective desire to pursue a bit heavier sound, tour incessantly, and write and record their own material. To keep the band working though, cover material was necessary. However, there was an intentional deviation from mainstream pop to a bit heavier model that worked well in Midwest clubs. Labyrinth’s touring range got a big boost when word reached Minneapolis booking agent Roger Anderson about this band from Iowa that

does everything from their own originals to Rush covers yet somehow makes it work. After signing with Excelsior Talent in Minneapolis, the serious road work commenced, and the band’s boundaries expanded, ultimately reaching Thunder Bay, Ontario to the north, Texas to the south, Idaho to the west, and Indiana to the east. During this period, Roger Anderson moved to Artist Representation and Management (ARM) out of St. Paul, Minnesota and took Labyrinth along with. Although Labyrinth had already been playing metro areas like Des Moines; Omaha, Nebraska; Kansas City, Missouri; and Fargo, North Dakota, ARM was very good at placing their roster into the Twin Cities clubs which exposed the band to a major market that was very hot at the time.

Around early 1985, Labyrinth went into Catamount Recording in Cedar Falls to record their full-length LP “So Wild” that the band self-produced with Tom Tatman. Five hundred vinyl albums were pressed and distributed via shows and record store outlets in some of the band’s more popular markets. Also during this time, Labyrinth landed many opening shows for national acts coming through the Midwest which also heightened their exposure. Labyrinth played shows with such artists as Foghat, Steppenwolf, Shooting Star, Black Oak Arkansas (four-show mini-tour), Steel Breeze, Ozark Mountain Daredevils (twice), Savoy Brown, Guess Who, Head East (eight different shows due to shared management), and King Kobra. Labyrinth disbanded August of 1986 due to eventual membership instability and chronic financial dysfunction, but “So Wild” lives eternal online!

311 (pronounced “three eleven”) is an American rock band from Omaha, Nebraska. The band was formed in 1988 by vocalist and guitarist Nick Hexum, lead guitarist Jim Watson, bassist Aaron “P-Nut” Wills, and drummer Chad Sexton. Watson was replaced by Tim Mahoney in 1990. In 1992, Doug “SA” Martinez joined as a second vocalist and turntablist.

311 has released 13 studio albums, two live albums, four compilation albums, four EPs and four DVDs. After a series of independent releases, 311 was signed to Capricorn Records in 1992 and released the albums “Music” (1993) and “Grassroots” (1994) to moderate success. They achieved greater success with their 1995 triple platinum self-titled album, which reached No. 12 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of the singles “Down” and “All Mixed Up,” the former of which topped the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks in 1996. The band’s next three albums—”Transistor” (1997), “Soundsystem” (1999), and

“From Chaos” (2001)—were also successful, with the first going platinum and the last two going gold. Their 2004 compilation album “Greatest Hits ‘93–’03” was also certified platinum. The band’s most recent studio album is 2019’s “Voyager.” As of 2022, 311 has sold over 10 million records in the United States.

The band’s name was chosen by Wills from the police code for indecent exposure in Omaha after a friend of the band was arrested and cited for skinny dipping in a public pool.

Getting to the point where he can casually proclaim that, Hexum and his bandmates—DJ/vocalist Doug “SA” Martinez, guitarist Tim Mahoney, bassist Aaron “P-Nut” Wills, and drummer Chad Sexton—have worked hard to hone their craft and keep propelling the group forward.

Their 13th and latest album “Voyager” pulls from their successful template of rap, rock, funk, and reggae sounds.

CORNFED BAND

Cornfed was a rowdy, loud, high energy rock ’n’ roll band!

They presented a party atmosphere, and the appreciative crowds enthusiastically joined the party. Cornfed played their first gig at Nimmer’s Ballroom in Bancroft in May of 1976. They debuted to a crowd of around 300. The response was very positive, word spread quickly, and a loyal following rapidly ensued. They played to capacity crowds wherever they performed.

a mainstay in the lineup, but there were some brief experiments.

The home base bars were the Stagecoach and the Frontier Ballroom in Mason City. The band played various ballrooms throughout the area as well the Bandshell in Clear Lake.

They performed several times at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, most notably opening for BlackFoot and BrownsVille Station. They were regulars at all of the most popular bars in the area, occasionally traveling to venues throughout Iowa, Minneapolis, and also other hot spots in Minnesota.

The horn section dispersed in June, and Mike Watts left the band shortly thereafter. Back to a four-piece format, Cornfed continued to excite and entertain crowds wherever they performed. Gregg “Del” Plagge left the lineup in June of 1978 and was replaced very briefly by Tom Alverz. Bill Solum left the band in February of 1979. He was replaced by Jeff Dahlstrom. They maintained the three-piece format with Dennis Luna, Jeff Dahlstrom, and Steve Sutton for the remainder of the lifespan of the band. Cornfed played on a full-time basis through 1979, disbanding after the new year. They reunited for gigs and special parties for a few years thereafter.

Cornfed was a rock ’n’ roll roller coaster, and there were other personnel involved. Bill Solum replaced Jeff Dahlstrom on bass in December of 1976. He was

SAGE BAND

Sage was founded in 1975 by high school classmates, Kurt Feller, Tim Rice, and Kevin Alexander in Victor. They started playing rock ‘n’ roll covers in local taverns and junior high dances. By the time they were juniors, they were playing at other high schools, legion halls, and bars. After signing with a booking agent, Sage started playing gigs all over the state of Iowa as well as a few in Minnesota and Illinois, all while still in their teens.

During their history—1975–1991 and 2020–2023—they have played at Keystone Turner Hall, Blairstown Legion, Victor Legion, Ottumwa Coliseum, Iowa State Fair, Lakeside Ballroom, Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival, Kitty’s Rock Showplace, University of Iowa Memorial Union, Five Sullivans Center, and the Belle Plaine 4th of July Celebration.

The lineup has changed over the years and includes Kelly Gensley (1975–1979), John Burnham (1979–1989, 2020– 2022), and Steve Junge (1989–1991, also lead vocals) on drums; Tim Rice (1975–1982, 2020–2022), Justin Saylor (1982–1989), Tim Saylor (1982–1984), and Ted Poulsen (1989–1991, also keys) on lead guitar; Bob Feller (1984– 1991, 2021–2023, also rhythm guitar) on keyboards; Kevin Alexander (1975–1984, 2020–2022, also keys and rhythm guitar), Jerry Henning (1980–1984, 2020–2022), Robert Wallace (1984–1986, 1990–1991, 2021–2023), and Todd Bergen (1986–1989) on lead vocals; Kurt Feller (1975– 1991, 2020–2023) on bass; and Jim Burnham (1979–1989, 2020–2022), Joel Weber (1989–1990), and Darrin Junge (1989–1991) on sound.

CARTWRIGHT BROTHERS BORDER BAND

The Cartwright Brothers are Mark Nelson and Jeff Schwebach. They are a rare and versatile act from Sioux Falls, that combines their musical talents with comedy.

Their career spans well over 30 years, averaging between 100 and 150 shows a year for the majority of that time.

It would not be out of the ordinary for you to find The Cartwright Brothers headlining a comedy show as a duo on a Friday night, then engaging in a sweat-filled rock ‘n’ roll show on Saturday night with the Split Pea Band, which boasted as many as six members.

For over 10 years they were a major summer musical attraction of the Iowa Great Lakes, playing the Bavarian Gardens in Arnolds Park every weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day. VH1’s Corey Moss once wrote, “The Cartwright Brothers are to Lake Okoboji as Jimmy Buffet is to Key West.” In addition to hundreds of shows at the legendary Pomp Room, they have performed at the Sioux Falls Arena, the Great Hall of the Washington Pavilion,

the main stage of a major Las Vegas casino, and Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville in Cancun, Mexico. To add to their busy performing schedule, they also found time to host a morning show on Q95.7 radio in Sioux Falls for over seven years.

In 1992, they were an NACA Showcase winner, and over the years, they have shared the stage with many rock ‘n’ roll legends like Bad Company, Kansas, and Pat Benatar, as well as performing comedy shows with the likes of Dave Chappelle and Bobcat Goldthwaite.

They have released three CDs including “Serious,” “Peaking at Life,” and “Halfway to Nowhere.” Along with The Cartwright Brothers, the Split Pea Band has featured the talents of Don Cooper on drums; Jerry Turner, Monte Beringer, and Brian Detmers on electric guitar; and bass players George Puder, Dave Van Roekel, Derrick Zeeck and Robin Snow.

BADFINGER/JOEY MOLLAND OUT OF STATE BAND

Badfinger were a Welsh rock band formed in 1961 in Swansea, Wales. Their best-known lineup consisted of Pete Ham (guitar), Mike Gibbins (drums), Tom Evans (bass), and Joey Molland (guitar). They are recognized for their influence on the 1970s power pop genre. It is estimated that the band sold 14 million records.

Initially known as the Iveys, the band renamed themselves Badfinger after the working title for The Beatles’ 1967 song “With a Little Help from My Friends” (“Bad Finger Boogie”). From 1968 to 1973, Badfinger recorded five albums for Apple Records and toured extensively before they became embroiled in the chaos of Apple’s dissolution.

Badfinger had four consecutive worldwide hits from 1970 to 1972: “Come and Get It” (written and produced by Paul McCartney, 1970), “No Matter What” (produced by Mal Evans, 1970), “Day After Day” (produced by George Harrison, 1971), and “Baby Blue” (produced by Todd Rundgren, 1972). Their song “Without You” (1970) has been recorded many times and became a US and UK No. 1 hit for Harry Nilsson in 1972 and a UK No.1 for Mariah Carey in 1994.

Joey Molland is an English songwriter and rock guitarist whose recording career spans five decades. He is best known as a member of Badfinger, the most successful of the acts he performed with. Since 2005, Molland is the last surviving member from the band’s classic lineup.

During Molland’s association with Apple, he made guest appearances on two George Harrison albums, “All Things Must Pass” and “The Concert For Bangla Desh,” and the John Lennon album “Imagine.”

Molland went back into the studio in 2015 with members of 10,000 Maniacs (Ladies First) to release a new version on the classic song “Sweet Tuesday Morning” from Badfinger’s 1972 album “Straight Up.” In late 2019, Molland toured with Todd Rundgren, Jason Scheff, Micky Dolenz, and Christopher Cross in celebration of The Beatles’ self-titled double album under the banner “It Was Fifty Years Ago Today—A Tribute to The Beatles’ White Album.” Molland performed the Badfinger songs “Baby Blue” and “No Matter What.” Since 2019, he continues to tour under the name Joey Molland’s Badfinger.

DAVE ROWLEY INDIVIDUAL

Dave Rowley’s journey in music began at age 6 with piano lessons from a college professor at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. When he was 10, he picked up the clarinet, and at 12, he was introduced to the guitar—a Melody Maker guitar with an amplifier, setting the stage for Dave’s lifelong musical career.

From 1978 to 1984, Dave worked as a full-time singer/ guitarist. His first gig was at the Ivy Barn in San Diego, California, where his Wednesday happy hour performances quickly led to more opportunities. Over the years, he performed at a wide range of venues, including restaurants, bars, colleges, festivals, and casinos across California, Arizona, Colorado, Wisconsin, Iowa, and several other states. His repertoire includes cover tunes and original music, and he expanded his skills to include harmonica, 12-string guitar, penny whistle, and ukulele.

Dave’s recordings reflect his musical evolution. His song “Still a Child” debuted on the Iowa’s “First Flight” album, and in 1982, his track “Cedar Rapids Smile” was used as background for both regional radio and TV commercials and was promoted in national magazines. His 1996 album, “Miles and Years,” showcased 16 original songs. Praised for its catchy, accessible melodies and reflective lyrics, the

album highlighted Dave’s ability to craft music that resonates with everyday experiences.

In 2004, Dave formed Dave Rowley and Friends, creating an annual “End of Summer” concert series at the Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji. Ten years later, the group returned to play their last concert to a packed house of friends, family, and an audience that just wanted to have fun.

Dave’s contributions to music extend beyond his performances. He has been involved in numerous community events and fundraisers, including performances for the Iowa Great Lakes Rotary, Jam for the Animals, and the Taste of Italy event for the Humane Society.

Dave Rowley’s life is deeply intertwined with his music.

As he puts it, his original compositions are like “little bits and pieces of your autobiography,” and music serves as a catharsis for his emotions and experiences. For those in Spirit Lake and beyond, Dave’s performances continue to be a vibrant celebration of his enduring passion for music. He plays regularly at local wineries, events, and special occasions, often accompanied by Ryan Sather on keyboard.

LYNN WEE INDIVIDUAL

Lynn C. Wee was born and raised in Estherville, Iowa, graduating from Estherville High School in1959. He started playing drums in grade school, continuing through junior high, high school band and marching band. Lynn is a Veteran having served 3 years in the Iowa National Guard in Estherville. He is also a member of the American Legion Post #1 in Spencer, Iowa, and served 11 years as Sergeant of Arms.

In 1960, Lynn played drums in the Rhythm Tones Band.

After that, he played with John Senn in the Fortunes Band. After the Fortune Band disbanded, John and Lynn were co-owners of the Iowa Great Lakes Recording Studio in Milford, Iowa. Lynn was a recording engineer for IGL during this time. Later, Lynn played drums for 10 years with The Magnum Band. The Magnum Band members were asked to sing the National Anthem at a Twins Baseball Game in Minneapolis which Berkley’s Fly Fishing sponsored. Three of the Magnum members worked at Berkley’s.

Lynn and Karen live in Spencer, Iowa and have 3 daughters, Debbie Malchow of Fostoria, Tammy Lineweaver of Milford, and Kathy Petersen of Lake Park.

His first public guitar performance was in 9th grade, playing his Norwood guitar through a Wollensak tape recorder with the band. His last performance in school was playing “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” with the high school jazz band.

Things started happening in college—at ISU, he joined the Sammy Davis Group, a soul act playing bars and halls in the Midwest, from the Iowa State Armory to the stereotypical shows in strip clubs while he was only 17. His last three years in Ames were with Jebidiah Stone, one of Iowa’s first psychedelic progressive rock jam bands.

After graduation, he moved to Brisbane, Australia, joining Moonlight, a true progressive rock act. Just like the scene in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” he went to a Moonlight show, walked out back to the load out, and found the members of Moonlight having a smoke. He told them they needed a lead player,” and “I’m the one you need.” An hour later, he had an audition; after a quick jam, he was in the band.

Moonlight was the premiere Brisbane band; they opened for many international touring acts including Jackson Browne, Little River Band, Bo Diddley, and Deep Purple.

When Bo Diddley toured Australia, the promoter only paid for Bo’s ticket—he used local backing bands including Moonlight. Having Bo working with Moonlight before the gig, showing them how to “play the blues,” was a priceless experience. Moonlight turned down a contract with United Artists, signing instead with WEA. Their first single, “Moonlight Lady,” was produced by Ric Formosa of Little River Band and charted in the Top 10.

In 1977, Jon moved back to Iowa—his wife “missed snow.” He played in numerous Iowa bands including 2014 IRRMA inductee Crystal Axe. He also played guitar in local musicals including “Buddy Holly,” “Ring of Fire,” “The Rocky Horror Show,” and a 32-show run of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” In 2007, he joined the Southern rock band Lockren where he adopted the stage name “Jay Robertson” for social media. In three years, they opened for many CMA acts including Randy Houser, Tracy Byrd, Rodney Atkins, and Miranda Lambert.

JON PURDY INDIVIDUAL

Jon Purdy (aka Jay Robertson) has been in and around the Iowa music scene for most of his life. He was surrounded by music as a child, so it was inevitable that he join band in junior high, starting on clarinet, then adding saxophone.

In 2009, tragedy struck when Jon lost his hearing. He contracted cholesteatoma in both ears, forcing an end to all live performances. After 10 procedures, three titanium prosthetics, and four artificial eardrums, he returned to the stage. In 2013, he formed Zoot and Newt with 2022 Hall of Fame inductee Jen Brucher. They are still performing, having played festivals and shows throughout Iowa including opening for Woodstock veterans Canned Heat in 2019.

Except for the years he was deaf and recovering from surgery, music has been Jon’s life. He has played for tens of thousands of people from Iowa to Australia, live, on vinyl, in the studio, and on television. His only words of wisdom would be, “Don’t stop doing what you love.”

JOHN STEFANIAK INDIVIDUAL

John traces his beginnings in rock ’n’ roll to a specific event in 1962. Since he was too young to attend, his father took him into a high school dance to see his older cousin’s band, Paul Steffen and The Royal Lancers, perform their local hit recording of “I Fought the Law.” John remembers that “all the cool older kids were there, dancing, and Paul was up there singing, and every time the band finished a song, all those cool older kids turned towards the stage and applauded! I thought, ‘This is the life for me!’” His parents helped him buy a bass (he still has it), and he was soon playing his own high school dances with The Fabulous Roadmen around the Milwaukee area.

Fast forward to Iowa in 1982 where he became a founding member of Sven and the Fjordbusters. And then The House Rockers, and then The Blue Tunas, and then Rockin’ Robin, and Twist and Shout, and The Mod-Est Lads, and many others. He played for years in the house bands for the Monday Night Blues Jam in Iowa City and at Sunday afternoon country jams at Nancy’s Country Inn in Marion.

John taught bass lessons for more than 30 years at The Iowa City Guitar Foundation, Dave Rosazza’s Lesson Studio, and Musician’s Pro Shop in Iowa City.

John played thousands of gigs over 60 years, often in two bands at the same time, performing in every kind of venue, from basements, barns, and bars, to VFW and KC Halls, Eagles, Elks, Moose lodges, county fairs, and casinos, the Iowa State Fair, The Five Seasons Center, The MARK of the Quad Cities, and The Civic Auditorium in Nashville.

For the past 25 years, singer-songwriter and Shenandoah native Matt Cox has been writing songs and performing at venues all across the United States while developing his signature road-worn vocal, guitar, and harmonica style.

With a song catalog consisting of more than 10 full-length studio albums, Cox blends the traditions of classic country, folk, rock, rhythm, and blues, both as a solo artist and with an ever-changing lineup of the area’s top talent in a group known as The Marauders. Now residing in Omaha, Nebraska, Cox is a nine-time Omaha Entertainment and Arts Award winner for Album Of The Year, “High Places” (2018); Best Country/Folk/Americana (2009–2014, 2021, and 2022); Best Blues (2008); and 2024 Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame Inductee. Since the start of his career, he has shared the stage with dozens of well-known artists including David Alan Coe, Drive-by Truckers, Son Volt, Elizabeth Cook, Greg Brown, and Willie Nelson.

RICHARD KLEINBERG INDIVIDUAL

Sioux City native Richard “Rich” Kleinberg was destined for musical greatness from the beginning. His singing career began at age 11 when he was discovered by a local radio celebrity, Red Norris, and was asked to perform alongside Norris inside the studio.

Kleinberg is most remembered for being the front man and lead vocalist for the Sha-Dels, a local Sioux City rock ‘n’ roll band from the mid ‘60s. The Sha-Dels were very popular, touring extensively throughout the Midwest.

Participating in a Battle of the Bands in the Arnolds Park Roof Garden, the Sha-Dels won first place and were gifted a free recording session at the IGL studio. Richard reflects, “When the record was released, we toured local record shops. It was my first experience with screaming teenage girls trying to get a lock of my hair.” The band’s recording of “Suddenly” and “Hand Jive” was a well-received record and today is considered quite valuable as it was one of the earliest recordings made on the IGL label.

Kleinberg recalls, “When the movie ‘Bikini Beach’ premiered in Sioux City in 1964, the movie’s go-go dancer,

Candy Johnson, joined our caged go-go dancers at the first River-Cade Festival in Sioux City.”

Before joining the Sha-Dels, Rich sang with The Dukes in Dallas, Texas. After leaving the Sha-Dels, they started Uncle Sam and the 4 Fs (a little play on draft status).

Becoming quite popular, they received a permanent engagement at a South Dakota night spot.

Following his career in music and since his retirement from his role as art director at KTIV Channel 4 television, Rich keeps busy volunteering at Sioux City Community Theatre, Lamb Theatre, and Morningside College Theatre.

Vested in arts of all kinds, if he wasn’t performing on stage, he would either direct, run lights, design and build sets, or anything else that was needed to carry out a great show. You will see him around Siouxland during much of the year, but he also enjoys wintering in South Texas’ Rio Grande Valley. Despite a twisted esophagus affecting his singing voice, Kleinberg says, “I’m always singing a song in my head.”

PHIL KELLY INDIVIDUAL

Phil Kelly, born in Sioux City, is a multi-faceted musician whose career spans guitar performance, composition, songwriting, and music production. A Berklee College of Music alumnus, Kelly graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts in Professional Music. His studies encompassed arranging, composition, film scoring, recording, and commercial advertising production, complemented by a Performance Certificate in Guitar.

Kelly’s professional development was further enriched by advanced workshops. He attended a master class in film scoring with Walter Scharf at UCLA and participated in producer’s workshops at the Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, focusing on music for film, TV, commercials, the recording industry, MIDI, synthesizers, and digital audio recording.

In the early stages of his career, Kelly made a mark as a founding member of Legs Diamond, a Sioux City-based band alongside Stanley Sowienski, Johnnie Bolin, and Marc Engle. His performance credits extend to notable tours with Spyder and the Crabs, The Smoke Ring, and Dr.

John Cook. Kelly performs annually at the Tommy Bolin Music Festival and the Sioux City Rock and Blues Reunion with Russell Bizzett’s East/West Band.

Kelly was the musical director and composed the original score for the travel documentary series ‘A Proper Pint,’ which explores Irish pubs and travel in Ireland.

Additionally, Kelly served as Assistant Musical Director for the motion picture ‘Fake Out,’ and composed original music for ‘Theater Gone Wild,’ a theater production for the Santa Barbara Zoo. Kelly’s commercial production credentials are extensive.

As the owner/operator of Musical Media, he ran an Addy Award-winning studio in Palm Desert, California, where as a composer, lyricist, producer, session musician, and engineer, he specialized in creating jingles for radio and television, voiceovers, and music on hold.

His portfolio includes over 50 productions for a diverse range of clients, from local merchants and shopping centers to major events like the Newsweek Champions Cup Tennis Tournament.

DAVE DUCHARMEJONES INDIVIDUAL

David Ducharme-Jones is best known for his smooth, melodic, versatile guitar style; his warm, rich full tones; along with his gift for improvisation. Dave’s been a serious player with a solid work ethic from his early teens with a career spanning almost a half century. He remains current co-leading his own band Ducharme-Jones; working as a side man with many of Iowa’s finest singer-songwriters; co-leading Monday Night Live, a popular music series at xBk in the Drake neighborhood; and co-founding PorchFest, now in its the third year in the Union Park Neighborhood in Des Moines.

Dave picked up a guitar at 13 and never put it down.

He was deeply inspired in high school by Carol Stewart (mother of jazz drummer Bill Stewart) who invited him to join her award-winning swing choir that was selected to travel internationally as part of Jimmy Carter’s Friendship Force. He was performing professionally with bands throughout high school and often found himself during the summer months performing at the HiHo or Mocambo Club at Lake Okoboji. By 19, he was on the road touring with The Penetrators (later DVC), and by 20, he and his wife, Annie, decided to move to California in search of different opportunities.

During most of the ‘80s, Dave was in the Bay Area, fronting an original rock band, The Drive, that captured the eye of a number of A&R reps. With a residency at Uncle Charlie’s in Marin County alongside Huey Lewis and The News, it was the perfect club for showcase performances.

Neil Schon, guitarist for Journey, produced a demo for The Drive, working together at Prairie Sun Recording in Sonoma County. Mike Clink (Eddie Money, Survivor, Starship, Heart, Guns & Roses) produced a second project with The Drive, recording at The Record Plant in Sausalito and Goodnight LA in Los Angeles. For a variety of reasons, the California project came to an end after enjoying some impressive success developing a solid following in the Bay Area.

By 1986, Dave and Annie read an article in “Rolling Stone Magazine” about Austin, Texas, and they flew down

to check it out. They came back to California, having made the decision to move. During the ‘80s, Austin’s music scene felt cohesive and organic, and Dave toured with several projects as a side player before co-leading his band Rainravens, one of the early Americana, singer-songwriter bands that signed to record label Deja Disc in the US and Blue Rose Records in Germany. Rainravens produced nine albums and toured internationally from 1996 to 2007.

Dave won the title Austin Songwriter of the Year in 2013, around the time that his wife Annie jumped back into her own songwriting, and they joined forces forming the band “Ducharme Jones.” They co-produced three original studio albums, “Strangest Things,” “Vagabonds and Poets,” and “Unbroken,” and in 2023, they released their first live album, “Live From Dogtown.” The couple came full circle, returning to Iowa in 2017, and are delighted to be part of the thriving music scene in Des Moines.

TINA MOCK INDIVIDUAL

Tina Mock started playing in bands in 1996 at age 18.

She played all over north and central Iowa and has never stopped! Prior to finding live band music, she studied piano and classical voice for eight years. Through meeting fellow musicians, Tina had the opportunity to do several recording projects in Cedar Falls, Nashville, Minneapolis, and Waterloo from 1999 through to the current day. She was hired to work on many recording projects in Waterloo and several projects in Nashville, Tennessee, and she also recorded several albums of her own. Tina was a member of, or filled in with, more than 12 bands of all genres in Iowa and Nashville. Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Tina Mock plays bass, rhythm guitar, trumpet, piano, flute, mandolin, violin, and even tin whistle. Tina has headlined at and opened for several national acts at multiple venues, such as the Surf Ballroom, Electric Park Ballroom, North Iowa Fair Grounds, Winnebago-Itasca International Travelers Rally, and Tree Town Music Festival, and she had the honor to be in the first band to play Arnolds Park Preservation Plaza as an opening act in the summer of 2022.

Playing in live rock, country, and blues bands in Iowa continuously since 1996 makes 27 years of playing in Iowa bands! Tina has played with and developed lasting friendships with many Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame members including being married to Rich Mock since 2002, and she was pivotal in his 2018 Hall of Fame nomination. Tina’s

Iowa rock ‘n’ roll musician journey started as a vocalist, then moved into rhythm guitar. She met Rich in 1997, married in 2002, and started a family and a band together.

The Mocks moved to Nashville in 2005 where Tina began playing bass in an all-girl punk band and also played trumpet in a local funk band. During this time in Nashville, Tina and Rich visited their north Iowa home every July and played gigs with friends while they were back, so she never truly left the Iowa music scene—even from 800-plus miles away! Tina moved back to Iowa in 2008 and began playing as a duo, formed a party band, and then moved into a smaller 3 to 4-piece rock band that still plays today.

This is all while performing solo and duo shows, sitting in with other bands and on recording sessions, raising two children, handling all of the booking, and running her own business.

She continues to play and book her solo shows, duo shows, and full band, The Mockingbirds, every year. Tina is known for a wide range of vocal ability, a pure tone, strong vocal control, and an impressive range. She is also known as a solid bass player with classic tone, a dedication to supporting the song and group as a whole, and has been called “The best bass player in north Iowa,” while remaining a selfless band member with a reputation for, and a pride in, being easy to work with. Tina Mock is an exemplary example to fellow female musicians that they, too, know how to rock!

DAWN SEDLACEK INDIVIDUAL

Dawn Sedlacek is a vocalist, drummer, keyboardist, and songwriter from Cedar Rapids. She has been an active musician since 1996.

Influenced by the Riot Grrrl movement of the 1990s, her first band, “Second Skin,” was a mix of grunge, punk, and hard rock. She served as lead vocalist in this and other musical acts throughout the late ‘90s and 2000s. In 2002, under the mentorship of Kerri Collings, she also began learning to play drums. By 2005, she was drumming in ‘80s tribute band The Jodie Foster Connection. During this time, she became known locally as a hard-hitting drummer and solid timekeeper while lending her vocal talent to other miscellaneous projects along the way.

When The JFC disbanded in 2011, Dawn, again, learned another instrument: the keyboard. She started a new project, Virago, that same year. In 2013, she auditioned for the multi-role of vocalist, keyboardist, and drummer for the band Sound Daze. She won the spot and played in this band for five years. In parallel, a side project was beginning to form: Toxic Blonde. This would ultimately become Dawn’s primary project. Serving as lead vocalist and keyboardist, Toxic Blonde gave Dawn the opportunity to showcase her nearly four-octave vocal range by covering bands like Heart, Guns n’ Roses, and Led Zeppelin. In 2019, she also co-founded Iowa’s only No Doubt tribute band, Faux Doubt. Both Toxic Blonde and Faux Doubt continue to be active musical projects for Dawn to the present day.

Increasing the presence of female musicians has always been a mission of Dawn’s. In 2017, she began working with Cedar Rapids music venue Chrome Horse Saloon to host the annual Women Who Rock concert. Dawn helped the venue put together a lineup of bands featuring female singers and musicians, and assisted with promotion.

She has been a performer at this event every year since its inception.

In 2020, Dawn switched from traditional synthesizer to keytar. She utilized the pandemic downtime to refine her playing and finish songs she had previously written. By 2021, Dawn had trademarked the Toxic Blonde name and began recording original material. As a songwriter, Dawn writes the lyrics, melodies, arrangements, chord

progressions, and drumbeats. The first copyrighted single, “Invisible,” was released on October 8, 2021. It gained airplay on Iowa radio stations such as Rock 108, Z93 Radio Keokuk, 97.3 The Rock, and Monkeyboy Radio. It has also been featured on Australia’s “Rock or Bust” radio program on 107.3 HFM. In April 2022, “Invisible” was chosen as a finalist in the Great American Song contest (a national songwriting contest) in the Rock/Alt category.

In October 2022, Toxic Blonde was awarded co-winner of “Best Rock Band” at the first annual Iowa Music Awards.

The following year, the band performed at the 2023 Iowa Music Awards at Riverside Casino.

Dawn is looking forward to recording and touring with Toxic Blonde and Faux Doubt throughout 2024. She lives with her husband, Daren, near Cedar Rapids and is a program manager for Collins Aerospace.

records, the first Beatles and Rolling Stones songs— among many others—before they hit the national charts.

After military service, Coloff moved to Cedar Rapids to work as a morning air personality at Top 40 station KLWW-AM-1450. By then, Tony had married Susan Nitchals of Algona, and their first two children, Jim and Martha, were born.

In October 1968, the family moved to Minneapolis where Tony became a morning air personality on all-request rock ‘n’ roll stations KRSI-AM-950 and FM-104.1 in St. Louis Park, and Sue worked as a registered nurse. In February 1971, KBEW station owner Paul Hedberg recruited Coloff to work at his new station, KQAD-AM-800, in Luverne, Minnesota.

For seven years, Tony Coloff was the morning and news guy at KQAD and was involved in many broadcast and community events. Tony started a New Year’s Eve tradition that ultimately lasted 27 years: A live call-in Rock and Roll Request and Dedication Party. Hundreds of requests meant the vinyl 45s and LPs in the control room would still be stacked high at 3 a.m. New Year’s morning.

TONY COLOFF DJ

Anthony G. (Tony) Coloff grew up in Mason City, hometown of “Music Man” composer Meredith Willson.

Music was in Tony’s blood from a young age, and in high school, he built a low-power radio transmitter in his bedroom, broadcasting to his sister’s radio and classmates driving past.

During this time, Tony and Sue researched FM radio construction permits and created KIOW-FM-107.3 in Forest City, close to their hometowns. In 1978, the Coloff family, now with three children including Ann, moved to Forest City to build, own, and operate KIOW as a live and local music, news, information, and sports station for the community.

Sue ended her nursing career and began her new career as business manager, and Tony worked as the morning on-air personality, program director, music director, and equipment manager. With a small but dedicated staff and a commitment to local service, KIOW became successful. Their fourth child, Jonathan, was born a year after KIOW was born.

Tony’s first DJ job was at KSMN-AM-1010 on weekends while attending NIACC and then at KWAD, the University of Iowa campus station located in Quadrangle Dormitory in Iowa City.

In December 1991, Tony and Sue built a second station, KMCH-FM-94.7 in Manchester. Son Jim Coloff, now a college graduate and working in radio in Des Moines, took over as manager. The two stations are now part of the Coloff Media Radio Group of Northeast Iowa, which consists of 12 radio stations in seven communities, including Forest City, Britt, Mason City/Clear Lake, Charles City, New Hampton, Waterloo/Cedar Falls, and Manchester.

After college, Coloff returned to Mason City as DJ Anthony Gee, serving as music director at rock ‘n’ roll radio station KRIB-AM-1490. He was thrilled to discover and play, from stacks of record company promotional

RICK GALUSHA DJ

Rick Galusha’s radio program, “Pacific Street Blues & Americana,” is being celebrated for its exploration of the blues within the realm of classic rock. Galusha has hosted the program on Iowa radio station 89.7 The River for more than 30 years.

But his radio journey traces all the way back to the mid1970s when he discovered a new FM radio station, captivated by its fresh rock sound.

During college, Galusha showcased classical and jazz records on KVNO. In 1991, he seized an opportunity to play the blues for one hour a week on a minor commercial station in the Omaha, Nebraska market, giving birth to Pacific Street Blues.

Originally a hardcore academic blues program, the show has interviewed an impressive array of local and national recording artists over its 33-year tenure. The roster of artists he’s interviewed include Rolling Stones’ bass player Bill Wyman, John Entwistle from The Who, Bonnie Raitt, BB King, James Cotton from the Muddy Waters Band, Hubert Smith of Howlin’ Wolf’s Band, and many others.

The Bellevue University political science professor directs the university’s Kirkpatrick Signature Series that explores citizenship and civics, also uses music in the classroom. He currently teaches a course on “notes and votes” that covers the confluence between 20th century social changes and popular music from the respective era.

In 1985, John “Jack” Rembold was left unemployed after the company he worked for went out of business. He then made his income from playing his horn with territory bands, but having a family to support, he knew he had to make a decision on his future. Jack could have gone back to teaching, but he enjoyed his previous job and had made a lot of friends from his contacts with band directors, fellow musicians, and company representatives. After a lot of discussion with his wife, he decided to give self-employment a shot. Having his own music store sounded like a good idea, albeit a big challenge. In 1986, in the basement of his home, North Star Music Supply was born.

PHIL MAASS

SUPPORT PERSON Phil Maass was raised in a small town in southeastern Pennsylvania, where a surprising number of musicians resided given the town’s size. During high school, he played drums in a few bands and developed a keen interest in audio equipment such as tape recorders.

Maass pursued higher education and continued his musical journey in college, performing in various jazz bands and managing sound for the Student Union. Following graduation, he relocated to San Francisco, where he sought opportunities to play drums with bands. Despite his enthusiasm, Maass found himself out of sync with the prevailing post-punk scene, being more aligned with the jam-band genre. During this period, he took a class from Jim Coe, an audio engineer for Jefferson Airplane.

Around the time he completed the class, Maass received an unexpected call from a friend who worked as a booking agent in Wisconsin. The friend needed a sound guy for one of his bands. Despite Maass’s reservations about his limited experience, the friend assured him that showing up sober would suffice. This opportunity marked Maass’s transition to the Midwest, where he spent the next two years working with the band until financial constraints ended their tour.

Over the following 15 years, Maass traveled extensively across the Upper Midwest, engaging in one-off gigs and short tours with various lounge bands. His work frequently took him between Wisconsin and Iowa, where he collaborated with rock and blues bands. He ended up joining

some of them including Bo Ramsey and the Sliders and Bob Dorr and the Blue Band.

In a significant career shift, Maass was introduced to a position at KUNI Public Radio (later Iowa Public Radio) in Cedar Falls by Bob Dorr, who was also working at the station. The station’s events producer was departing, and Dorr suggested Maass apply for the position. To his surprise, Maass was hired, and he began his now 30-year tenure at KUNI/IPR. At KUNI/IPR, Maass has been responsible for recording and producing a wide range of performances, including those of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony, chamber music ensembles, piano recitals, and UNI Faculty Jazz groups. He also recorded the Des Moines Metro Opera for several years. Maass was responsible the production of the weekly folk and singer-songwriter show “Live from Studio One” and has recorded at numerous festivals and venues across Iowa, such as the Backbone Bluegrass Festival, CSPS, Bowlful of Blues, 80-35, Theater Cedar Rapids, and the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival. At the latter festival, Maass worked as both a sound guy and, later, as a broadcaster.

Maass has produced the recorded live performances for Iowa Public Radio, with some broadcasts reaching NPR’s programs like “World Café” and “American Routes.” He is also involved in producing classical live recordings for broadcast, with some of these recordings featured on NPR’s “Performance Today.”

TIM FOX

SUPPORT PERSON Tim Fox, was the brand manager and program director for KIOA Radio under Saga Communications, Des Moines, for 21 years—from January 1994 until January 2015. KIOA was one of the Midwest’s premiere classic hits/oldies broadcast brands, and Tim served as Classic Hits Format Specialist for Saga Communications during his 21-year tenure.

Prior to KIOA, Tim had a long career doing similar work for radio stations in several states around the country starting in 1982. Since 2015, he has been a self-employed broadcast consultant in the Des Moines area.

At KIOA, Tim hired, managed, and oversaw on-air performers and developed and implemented on-air content, promotions, music selection, imaging, staging, and thematic production. He expanded the KIOA brand by producing and creating compelling copy that reinforced the brand in on-air presentations and through external marketing as well as in social media platforms.

Tim has received many awards throughout his career including the National Association of Broadcasters Crystal Award. The Crystal Award is given to radio stations who go above and beyond with a community service project and is one of the highest honors bestowed on radio stations. Tim also received the Brilliant At The Basics Programming Award and was a three-time winner of the SAGA Award.

IOWA ROCK ‘N ROLL MUSIC ASSOCIATION LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD For over five decades, southern Iowa native Jon Douglas Dixon (Doug) has impacted the Iowa music scene and beyond, working in multiple facets of the music industry.

Doug started playing piano at age 5, guitar at 12, and caught the rock ‘n’ roll bug when his first band, Road Shepherd & Co., won the Battle of the Bands in 1974 during his sophomore year in high school. They only played one gig. Another high school group, Conspiracy, followed, and by 1976, he had joined the established Ottumwa rock group Dark Horse.

In 1977, Dark Horse recorded Doug’s first song “Live By The Sword” at A & R Studio and toured as a cover band across a three-state area. In 1979, he received his degree from Ottumwa Heights College and attended William Penn as a music major. Concurrently, he worked as a studio engineer, synthesizer programmer, and session player at Iowa recording studios. In 1980, Dark Horse changed their name to Atlantis and expanded their footprint to a seven-state area. They were recording at Westminster Studio in Otho in anticipation of a record release but disbanded in early 1985 after nearly 1,000 gigs.

Doug soon landed a gig with Wausau, Wisconsin group Airkraft when their paths crossed at Westminster Studio. In 1985, Doug toured to support their second album which received regional airplay. Airkraft toured relentlessly across a 15-state area, performing over 1,000 shows. Their third album, “Airkraft,” was released in 1989 with significant writing contributions from Doug. It sold 68,000 copies.

Their big break came in 1991 when Curb Records signed the group to a four-album deal. 1991’s “In the Red” was distributed worldwide, as the group cultivated a following in the UK and Europe, with three singles receiving international exposure on hundreds of radio stations. Doug co-wrote five of the 10 tracks including “Feed Me to the Fire,” theme for Australian Fox TV show “Fire Rescue.” He

left the group in 1992 when they opted out of renewing the record deal.

After moving back to his hometown in 1992, he opened his recording studio, Mind’s Ear Music, and has served as engineer, producer, writer, and arranger for hundreds of Iowa artists; working as a jingle writer, voiceover artist, booking agent, sound contractor, and music instructor.

Notably, he has collaborated with Iowa artist Matthew Clay, co-writing four albums. He performed with Tom Arnold & Rosanne Barr in The Alice Chalmers Experience, at Farm Aid VI in Ames. In 1994, he established the roots rock band The Bootrockets which released a CD of his songs, opened for national acts, and played over 300 gigs until 2001.

In 2001, Doug enlisted with the classic rock band Standing Hampton as keyboardist, guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Since then, they have logged over 1,200 gigs and released an original CD, “Brace Yourself.” This year marks their 25th year as a group. In 2021, he released a solo piano album of his original compositions titled “Eighty Eight.”

GARY HEADY, SR. MATOUSEK LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Gary Eugene Heady was a 1969 graduate of Ottumwa High School and was a resident of Ottumwa most of his life. He was born August 20, 1951, in Ottumwa to Rex and Velma Morris Heady. Gary passed away on September 11, 2023. Surviving is his wife, Nannette; his children, Jesse Heady of Agency and Gary Heady Jr. of Spirit Lake; stepchildren, Christopher McNabb of Escondido, California and Lezza Leedom of Ottumwa; five grandchildren; and sisters, Joyce (Denny) Ferrell of Ottumwa and Linda Heady of Guerneville, California.

Gary was a professional musician performing with various national touring groups all over the country, most recently with Jennifer Handling and the Revolution Band. He was recognized as a master of the bass guitar. Gary officially retired in 2009.

president and student council president in 1976 and 1977. During his high school years, he gained access to local venues in Burlington, such as Pzazzatorium, The Woodshed, and The Ramp. These venues provided him with opportunities to discover and book bands for homecomings, proms, and school dances. With the assistance of educator Craig Rowley, Poulter successfully booked bands like Smokehouse, Slink Rand, and Tom Nelson’s band Rocks and Stonegate. Notably, members of these bands would later become inductees into the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame.

At the Capitol Theater, Poulter has played a significant role in bringing a diverse range of artists to the Burlington community and theater stage. His efforts include working with Iowa Hall of Fame artists such as Andy Avery, Craig Moore, Gary Richards, Dennis Albee, Richie Lee, and Bo Ramsey, as well as national acts like Shawn Mullins, The Bottle Rockets, Michael Martin Murphey, and Marshall Crenshaw. One of the highlights of his tenure is the establishment of the Capitol Theater’s Old Couch Music Festival, an annual outdoor event that has been a favorite in Burlington for seven years. This festival showcases local and regional Americana, folk, bluegrass, country, blues, and rock music.

Additionally, Poulter was the Capitol Theater’s point person in the establishment of the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll SE Iowa location at the Capitol Theater. This initiative, in collaboration with Dennis Duke, Gary Rickards, and Diane Sanders, has provided area residents with the opportunity to view the achievements of local musicians and celebrates the theater’s induction into the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

JEFF POULTER/ CAPITOL THEATER SPIRIT AWARD

Jeff Poulter serves as the live events director at the Capitol Theater in Burlington. His passion for live music has been evident throughout his life, beginning with his formative years in the Tri-State area. Poulter attended Dallas City High School, where he served as class

Beyond his work at the Capitol Theater, Poulter is an active member of the Burlington Moose Club, Eagles, and Shoquoquon Boat Club, where he continues to contribute to the local live music scene. He and his wife, Kim Kipp, are dedicated to supporting traveling artists by securing venues for them to perform at and then hosting them at their home or river cabin, helping to introduce their music to the area while reducing their expenses.

“As of fan of live music I cannot think of a greater honor than the recognition of being an inductee into the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Hall fame,” notes Poulter. “My goal is to continue to support live music events and to continue to assist promoting live music in Burlington and the local area.”

BRYAN FARLAND SPIRIT AWARD

Bryan Farland is the curator of Facebook page “The List Live Music in DSM Area” with a tagline: “This FB page is a way of posting a listing of local live music offerings in the Des Moines area each week. Support live music!”

We award the Spirit Award to Bryan for his tireless efforts to make sure that everyone has the joy of music in their lives and that it’s easier to find. All thanks to Bryan Farland!

Every week, 52 weeks a year, Bryan curates all of the live music going on in Des Moines. This is no small task. Just his Facebook page alone has more than 4,000 people relying on him to post the live music event for the week.

Bryan’s love for live music is legendary to all who follow him, and his audience is always growing. He not only promotes gigs but he also actively shows up to take photos of the musicians he’s helping to promote.

WENDY HULL SPIRIT AWARD

Gwendolyn Dorothy Hull Coon, “Wendy,” 52, went home to be with our Heavenly Father on June 12, 2023, from an unexpected health issue.

Wendy was born on June 4, 1971, in Kirksville, Missouri.

She was a 1990 graduate from Ft. Madison High School and attended Faith Baptist College in Ankeny and DMACC in Des Moines.

Wendy was known as “Wednesday” from her “Wednesday Notes” blog she wrote for the Des Moines area music artists: who will be performing, when, and where they would be each week. Wendy helped with promoting events and published interviews with musicians. Currently, “Wednesday Notes” has more than 2,700 followers. In 2015, she won the Fan of the Year award from the Des Moines Music Coalition due to being an involved and well-established figure in the community and in the local music scene.

Wendy was a huge part of the Valley Junction District with their live music, local shops, and she enjoyed visiting the farmers’ market. Wendy also enjoyed writing poems and journaling throughout the years.

Music was an absolute passion of her life, and music was a melody in her soul!

JOHN SENN LEGACY AWARD Diane Sanders began her involvement with the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association in 2007 at Arnolds Park at Lake Okoboji, when she and husband, Steve, attended the Hall of Fame induction of Patrick Hazell and the Mother Blues band. Diane became a lifetime member and has worked to raise the state’s awareness of Southeast Iowa’s musicians and venues ever since.

It takes more than musicians to bring live music to the public. “She is the mastermind behind all of the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association concerts we put on in Burlington,” 2014 inductee Dennis Duke said. “She is extremely deserving of the award.”
