2017 PROGRESS EDITION • SECTION A

The Greatest

Resource BY SARA KONRAD BARANOWSKI | skonr ad@iafalls.com

his year our annual business section, Progress, is focused on what many businesses call their greatest resource: People. We hear it all the time. Local businesses brag about their people. They’re the most dedicated, the most tenured, the most hard-working. They put their time and effort into making customers happy, or manufacturing the best product. In this special section you’ll find stories about businesses that keep employees for decades. Maybe they offer special incentives, or they’re just a great place to work. There are a number of those here in Hardin County – too many to feature all of them.

In this section you’ll find those features, as well as stories about the challenges businesses in rural Iowa – not just Hardin County – face when it’s time to hire someone new, or expand, or open a new business. There aren’t enough people here to meet the demands of employers. So economic development officials, state agencies and educators are doing what they can to meet those needs, through recruitment, education and retention. The success of our communities is tied to the people who live and work here. We hope you’ll enjoy this section and its stories of the dedication of our neighbors and friends and the good work that results from that loyalty. n

More than half of Hardin County Savings Bank’s employees have worked there for 10 years or more. The bank is the sixtholdest in the state of Iowa and a cornerstone in the community.

Russ Banzhaf is typical of many small-town coaches. His first and only job has been in Ackley. Banzhaf is nearing the end of his 31st season at the helm, and 39th overall in the school district. He cites community as a big reason why he’s stayed.

While some may expect a fast-paced environment such as a convenience store chain to have a high turnover rate, Casey’s General Store in Alden has been able to hold onto not one, but two long-time store employees.
