A Breadth of Support and Experience
Your Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees undergoes a transition in the Fall in conjunction with our Annual Meeting. We regretfully bid farewell to dedicated Trustees following their years of service, five Trustees this year. And we welcome new Trustees, six this year, as they embark on a new adventure. The Board also transitions to a new slate of officers during our Annual Meeting, and I am honored to be serving as President of the Board during the coming year. Past President Julie McGonegle has provided outstanding leadership for the Board this year, and I thank Julie for her dedication to 4-H and her ongoing guidance and support.
The Trustees reflect a wide range of professional backgrounds, along with being alumni of numerous county 4-H programs throughout Iowa. In my case, that is being a product of the Blue Grass Farmers Jr. and Sr. clubs in Scott County. As is true today, I benefited greatly from the support of family members, neighbors throughout Blue Grass township and Scott County, and numerous county staff members and volunteers during my own 4-H journey. Thank you to everyone who provided that support so many years ago.
That type of generous support is demonstrated repeatedly to the Trustees of your Foundation. We see it during our Annual Day of Giving in early October. This year 52 counties participated, and financial support of approximately $80,000 was pledged. We encourage even more counties to participate next year. We see it during events throughout the year, such as the Gala in February and the Northwest Iowa Golf outing in June. Please join us in the coming year if you can. And of course we see it throughout the year as family members and neighbors support Iowa 4-H’ers, especially during our County Fairs and the Iowa State Fair.
The Board in particular sees the support provided by our professional staff at our Foundation office, the state 4-H office, and at local county 4-H offices. During the past two years, the Foundation Board has been hosted by county staff members for our summer meeting, and the dedication, enthusiasm, creativity and support demonstrated by the county 4-H staff professionals is inspiring.
The resources held by your Foundation and overseen by the Board are significant, and the financial position of the Foundation is strong. In October, the Board developed the Foundation’s next Three-Year Strategic Plan, and we are now in the process of finalizing and implementing that Plan, all in furtherance of supporting the Foundation’s mission of providing financial resources for youth development through 4-H.
Those financial resources have provided assistance for an impressive spectrum of experiences for Iowa 4-H members. From drones purchased through a Foundation Grant in northwest Iowa, to supporting a creative combination of the Nutcracker Ballet + STEM where approximately 3,200 youth participated in person or remotely, to supporting the 4-H Career Pathways Academy, a 12-month immersive program for all Iowa youth in grades 8-11 that provides pathways to college and career preparedness.
Additional programs and experiences available to Iowa 4-H’ers are reflected within this edition of Fourward.
As I shared with the Foundation Trustees during our recent meeting, some of the opportunities available to Iowa 4-H’ers today are quite different from those I experienced in Scott County during the 1970’s, though thankfully showing and caring for hogs remains a pillar of 4-H life.
It is an exciting time to be in 4-H and experiencing everything the 4-H program offers. It is an exciting time to be supporting 4-H’ers and all Iowa youth as county and state staff members. And it is an exciting time to be serving on the Board of your Foundation.
We thank our donors and volunteers for your support of Iowa 4-H. Please contact any of our Trustees with any questions or comments you may have during the coming year.
Best Regards.

2022 ANNUAL REPORT
SUCCESS THROUGH SOCCER
New Iowa 4-H Soccer Program Reaching Youth
Sewing, steers and . . . soccer? While certainly not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of 4-H, the new Iowa 4-H Soccer Program is taking off and giving a new generation of young people an opportunity to find their place in 4-H!
Using the Soccer for Success curriculum developed by the U.S. Soccer Foundation, Iowa 4-H Soccer takes advantage of this sports-based youth development program, proven to help youth establish healthy habits and develop critical life skills. The curriculum has five Core Components: Physical Activity, Health & Wellness, Mentorship, Family & Community Engagement, and Safe Spaces and aligns well with the 4-H model.
With a goal to reach K-6 grade youth and engage them in physical activities that encourage team building and healthy living, 4-H staff initially reached out to schools as a partner to kick off the program.
In its pilot year, over 450 youth from Dallas, Davis, Jasper, Louisa, Muscatine, Polk, Scott and Marshall counties took part in 4-H Soccer. Youth participated in a variety of ways, including daily soccer sessions
implemented in collaboration with summer school programming, a six-hour day-camp experience, and several soccer interest activities facilitated at local school events and community venues.
The after-school programming sessions offered the most intense soccer experience—217 youth took part in 36 one-hour sessions offered throughout the program.
Iowa 4-H Soccer is designed to act like a 4-H club but adapted to work in an after-school setting. Trained, adult mentors teach the fundamentals of soccer and help build confidence of youth.
While learning more about soccer is certainly an aspect of 4-H Soccer, equally important is helping youth understand the value and benefits of a healthy lifestyle. After the completion of the soccer program, participants were asked about what they learned. Of the youth that completed the survey, 96% indicated they planned to stay physically active and eat more fruits and vegetables. Eighty-nine percent indicated they planned to drink more water and decrease the number of sugary drinks consumed.
Iowa 4-H Soccer is also helping to reach a new audience of 4-H youth. Of the youth registered, 54% reported diverse ethnicity and 87% were on free-reduced lunch. Many of the youth participants do not have the opportunity to play on a sports team due to challenges including high cost of player fees, transportation or lack of programs being offered. The soccer programs facilitated this past year were offered as no-cost or low-cost to participate. Donors to the Iowa 4-H Foundation provided a grant to purchase equipment and provide training and support for the CoachMentors.
“The 4-H Soccer program helps us to reach new, diverse youth audiences that may have not had the chance to experience soccer,” said Kim Kuester 4-H Youth Program Specialist. “Through this program, they are able to develop the love for the game and for 4-H.”
Abby Boysen, 4-H Youth Program Specialist, shared this story:
"Food Insecurity is a challenge for many of the

children we serve. A young man named Aiden participated with his three siblings. A coach told me they thought Aidan had food in his pockets. The summer school day ends with lunch, and the cooks offer extra food. Aidan had Soccer for Success after school and was not going straight home on the bus. I understood that food was his next meal, but I explained that it was unsafe for it to be in his pocket. We were able to find a designated space in the staff lounge refrigerator for his food. Every day after that, his coaches would discreetly bring him to the office, where we would mark his food with a post-it, and they would give it to him after practice. Building trust, prioritizing his needs, and respecting his wishes helped him worry less about the food he protected."
Iowa 4-H Soccer will continue to grow with plans to expand to more counties around the state with the creation of new clubs and new partnerships. And youth will continue to find new opportunities, thanks to the creative innovation of 4-H!

“Through this program, they are able to develop the love for the game and for 4-H,” said Kim Kuester, 4-H Youth Program Specialist.
NUTCRACKER BALLET + STEM
A Magical STEAM Event
Picture this. You take your seat in a crowded auditorium. The lights go down. The curtains open. The dancers glide across the stage. You find yourself wondering how the costumes are made. How the lights and music are programmed. The physics behind the dancers’ movements.
You’ve discovered the magic of STEAM: Science, Technology Engineering, Art and Math! The intersection of arts and science. And through a special partnership with Stephens Auditorium on campus at Iowa State University, over 3,000 students had the opportunity to explore STEAM concepts through a variety of activities culminating in a special viewing of the Nutcracker Ballet. “The idea for this program grew from observations of STEM in the theater,” says Sara Nelson, 4-H STEM Specialist and program organizer. “It is amazing to see how art and STEM can come
together to create engaging theater performances! From costumes to the light board, many aspects of theater careers have a strong STEM element. We wanted to highlight this creative side of STEM for youth through this 4-H event.”
Designed for elementary aged students, groups or individuals could take part in a variety of ways. Two challenges were created especially for this program. The first challenged students to design and build a machine that would catch the Nutcracker Ballet mouse! In the second challenge, students created a special costume for one of the Nutcracker characters. For each challenge, youth work in teams to apply STEAM concepts as they collaboratively solve a problem. School groups and 4-H clubs alike took part in the challenges. In addition, a group from Oakridge Community Center in Des Moines attended a special workshop
prior to the performance. Youth in attendance enjoyed working toward the challenges and were eager to learn more. They also took part in a green screen activity from the ISU Center for Technology in Learning & Teaching, learned about STEAM careers, and heard from the Principal Dancers.
“I hope that students see the connections between subject areas and that many careers require a range of skills and interests,” Nelson says. “I also hope that they understand that 4-H has many

wonderful opportunities that integrate subject areas and showcase how learning can be engaging and inspiring.”
After students completed the challenges, they were invited to a special performance of the Nutcracker Ballet, shortened specially to accommodate a younger audience. Groups could either take part in person, or view through a special streaming performance. All activities and performances were offered free of charge thanks to a special grant from the Iowa 4-H Foundation made possible through donor contributions.
All of the elements of the program were designed to highlight the magical connection between STEM and the arts.
“What I have found working with professional artists is that I see the world in new ways. This is something that is also important to those working in analytical STEM fields,” Nelson says. “Art can help open up our minds to new ideas and creative ways of understanding concepts. This in turn then might help us to develop groundbreaking ideas and concepts. For those in STEM, an appreciation of art enriches lives and presents a model of creativity and innovation.”

ONLINE SEWING CLUB Iowa 4-H Enthusiasts Program Pilot Ignites Youth SPARK
15 youth from across the state practiced sewing skills by participating in monthly Zoom club meetings focused on developing the youth sense of mastery and belonging, connecting with careers related to clothing and sewing, and exploring sewing projects. Joi and Iowa 4-H staff mentored youth as they completed monthly skill-building challenges while creating an artistic collage with fabric and other mediums, sewed a quilt top, and crafted a fabric bag as a tool for completing a citizenship service project in their community. Youth participants reported learning about textiles and connecting with others that share their SPARK by participating in the program pilot.
The Iowa 4-H Enthusiasts statewide 4-H club model aimed to connect 4-H youth with the same SPARK (passion, area of interest) to content area mentors, other youth who share their interests, and statewide learning opportunities. The program was designed to offer in-depth, specialized learning experiences to high school-aged youth to aid in county 4-H program member retention as youth explore high school. This relevant program model harnessed the power of virtual meetings and connections to foster a sense of belonging for youth interested in clothing and sewing. “I have felt welcome [during the meetings] and join in as much as I feel comfortable doing,” shared one 4-H youth participant.
This program was funded through a grant from the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Interested in helping this program continue? Contact Emily Saveraid at 515.294.1552 or esaver@iastate.edu.
Iowa 4-H connected high school-aged youth across the state who shared a SPARK for clothing and sewing projects by exploring a virtual statewide 4-H club program model. The Iowa 4-H Enthusiasts: Clothing and Sewing program cultivated meaningful peer-to-peer connections for youth participants through monthly Zoom meetings and online discussion forums about sewing under the guidance of published author and award-winning fashion sewing entrepreneur Joi Mahon and Iowa 4-H professionals.

LEANN BAUMHOVER NAMED 2022 OUTSTANDING 4-H LEADER
Iowa 4-H Foundation awards the tenth annual Successful Farming/Loren
Kruse Outstanding Iowa 4-H Leader Award
The Successful Farming/ Loren Kruse Outstanding Iowa 4-H Leader Award is presented annually to an adult volunteer who has encouraged, challenged, and inspired Iowa 4-H members to reach their fullest potential. This year’s recipient is Leann Baumhover from Carroll County. Baumhover was honored at the Iowa State Fair on August 21, 2022.
Baumhover was nominated by Kristine Goth, a Cherokee County 4-H alum. For most of her life, Leann has been a part of the 4-H community by being a leader, mentor, judge, and so much more. Baumhover’s love for 4-H began when she started judging static exhibits for both state and county fairs in the early 2000s.
Leann served as 4-H club leader of the Providence Go-Getters of Buena Vista County from 2008-2019. During her time as a leader, she has inspired youth to try new projects and get involved with all they can. Leann also served time on the Buena Vista County Extension Council to help make the community an environment where all 4-H members felt welcomed. Leann was honored for her work when she was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame Award in 2018.
In her nomination, Goth says, “Leann is one of the kindest and most generous people I know. She is a true leader who strives to ‘make the best better.’ Without her leadership and example, I would not have pushed myself to do more and step outside my comfort zone. She has helped me become more confident and has helped mold me into the person I am today.”
The Successful Farming/Loren Kruse Outstanding Iowa 4-H Leader Award comes with a $1,000 grant, which the honoree can designate back to Iowa 4-H through their club, county, or state foundations. The award was established by Meredith Corporation and the Edwin T. Meredith Foundation through the Iowa 4-H Foundation in honor of Loren Kruse’s retirement as editor-in-chief of Successful Farming magazine. Kruse credits the outstanding guidance his 4-H club leader provided for his successes as an adult.

“Through 4-H, I discovered my natural talent for leadership and drive to volunteer. When High School came around, I didn't hesitate to get involved with clubs that allow me to do exac tly those things. 4-H paved the path to my success today and there is no doubt in my mind that I would not be the person I am without 4-H,” – Alivia, Clinton County
