INTRODUCTION

I-ON THIS MONTH

ON THE COVER: Image courtesy of Oasis. Velvet ruched sleeve top, £28.

Life takes a funny turn sometimes. Take my current situation, penning this letter for the front of the mag, just like I did for the first seven years of i-on’s life. This is what happens when your editor (Nicky) is on maternity leave and then your acting editor (Carrie) also decides to join the motherhood with the birth of her baby girl, Lucie. Congratulations Carrie! Not that I mind, of course. It’s great to be hands-on again finding out all the best things going on this month and we’ve highlighted some of our favourites in this jam-packed November issue. We’ve also got a whole stack of lovely gift ideas to help inspire you in the season of goodwill (p42 ), plus our friends at Freeze Pro shop share their snow expertise with us in a comprehensive guide to the best of snow sports at home and abroad (p30 ). Not only that, our i-on events section showcases photos from some of our recent events and gives updates on the new ones we’re putting together because we know you’ll love them. Find out more on page 91. Can I also use this opportunity to tell you about our Members’ Club? It’s a club for readers who like to live the i-on lifestyle and be amongst the first to experience exclusive openings and offers from very carefully selected partners. So far so good… Hundreds of members have enjoyed free dinners (yes really), VIP guest lists, i-on perks at some of

Laura (acting editor!) and Jo (co-director) the best places in town and exclusive monthly prize draws. Want to join the club? Find out more at ionmembersclub.com. This month’s competition is one you’ll want to share only with your best friends. We’re offering one lucky reader the chance to win a stunning diamond necklace by Hamilton & Inches, worth £2,200. Turn to page 10 to find out how to enter. Congratulations also to last month’s competition winner, Cheryl McKenzie, who is now the proud owner of a lovely Coach handbag. Don’t say we’re not good to you… Until next month

WE CAN’T WAIT TO… The i-on team shares their must-dos this month

1

...take in some art “I can’t claim to know a lot about art, but The Fruitmarket Gallery is my go-to place for interesting exhibitions that bend my mind a little. I’m looking forward to seeing Scottish artist Jacqueline Donachie’s major mid-career exhibition starting on 11 November, encompassing sculpture, installation, photography, film and drawing. I’ll obviously be indulging in cake afterwards – I’m not daft.” Exhibition: Jacqueline Donachie, 11 November-11 February 2018, The Fruitmarket Gallery, 45 Market St, EH1 1DF, Tel: 0131 225 2383, fruitmarket.co.uk Carine Seitz, Contributing Editor

...sing and swoon “I LOVE Jake Bugg, so I was credit-card-at-the-ready when his tour dates were announced. I managed to bag brilliant seats, and I can’t wait to see him play a solo acoustic set on 13 November at The Queen’s Hall – raw, unadulterated Jake, up close. Yes!” Jake Bugg solo acoustic plus support, 13 November, The Queen’s Hall, 85-898 Clerk St, EH8 9JG. ticketmaster.co.uk Charlotte Hulme, Editorial Intern

3 ...have a drink! “Having spent October entirely sober in order to raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Support, I can honestly say I’m really, really looking forward to a glass of wine. Calistoga restaurant is having its 10th annual Thanksgiving Wine Fair on 23 November, so I’ll be there with bells on. With over 60 wines available to taste, I can more than make up for my dry spell.” Dinner, buffet or wine only options are available. calistoga.co.uk Amy Falconer, Account Director

NEWS

Going Up

4 ...be a bookworm “I’ve always got my head stuck in a book, and I’m trying to instil a love of reading in my daughter too, so I’m going to head along to some of the Book Week Scotland events taking place from 27 November – 03 December across Scotland. Featured writers include Christopher Brookmyre, Bernard MacLaverty, Judy Murray and Gail Honeyman, so there should be something for everyone.” scottishbooktrust.com Amanda Southey, Business Development Manager

5

...have a good belly laugh “As a father of two young children, I can relate to 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown regular Jon Richardson’s current major concern – why’s no one capable of loading the dishwasher correctly? I’m going to catch his Old Man rant on 10 November in Glasgow, for an evening of laughs with a kindred spirit.” Old Man: Jon Richardson, 09 November at Edinburgh Playhouse and 10 November at SECC Glasgow. atgtickets.com. Paul Dickson, Creative Director

CHRISTMAS Yep, we said it. We’re on the straight road to festive feeling. Roll on Rudolph and Starbucks Red Cups (returning 10 November). PERFECT SKIN There’s been shrieking at i-on HQ, because cult US skincare brand GLOSSIER is now delivering to the UK. The opening of a Deciem counter at House of Fraser Glasgow, means we’re getting an instant fix of The Ordinary too. We are GLOWING. KIDS’ GRUB Jamie’s Italian has topped the Out to Lunch guide for the best children’s menu for the third year running. Each kids’ meal contains at least 2 of their 5-a-day and they’ve swapped sugary drinks for unlimited fruity water. Well done, guys!

Barometer Going Down MEAT The movement to eschew all animal products is showing no sign of slowing down, with Glasgow Vegan Festival on 11-12 November at The Trades Hall, and Edinburgh Vegan Festival on 19 November at The Principal Charlotte Square. Just don’t wear leather. SHAVING It’s ‘Grow a Mo, Save a Bro’ time again – Movember is upon us. The effort required is zero, and you’ll raise funds to combat prostate and testicular cancer, as well as to support mental health and suicide prevention. uk.movember.com SILLY SPORTS Scotland’s first national team will compete in the Quidditch Premier League next summer. Yep, a fictional game from a story book, played on flying broomsticks. Only this version takes place on the ground, obviously.

DID YOU KNOW…

The Christmas tree in Jenners is 40ft tall, it takes all night to decorate and they need to use abseils to do it? Carol singers and Hamleys the Bear will be there too.

As you’d expect, a well thought-out list of wines is available by the glass as well as the bottle, and the food menu – devised by chef Lizzie Arber who recently made the move from London’s Garden Museum in Lambeth (voted by Gourmet Magazine as one of the top 10 best museum restaurants in the world) – features flavoursome light bites with a middle eastern influence.

“I LEARNED THE HARD WAY THAT YOU CAN’T GO AROUND SHOUTING AT PEOPLE”

Dan Ashmore’s

Edinburgh The Head Chef at The Pompadour by Galvin on having a peaceful kitchen and the need for an Edinburgh underground

What brought you to Edinburgh? My wife. We were both looking for a change from London life and she’s from here. Best and worst things about the city? The best thing is the up-and-coming food scene. The worst is my work commute, I live in Prestonpans – it’s a pain because of the hours I do.

Edinburgh’s best bits for

What part of the city do you like best? I love the deep history of the Old Town, it’s such an interesting place. The Grassmarket is great in the summer for a pint. What’s your earliest memory of being in a kitchen? Baking with my Nan and my sister after school. Have you ever worked somewhere so tough you considered giving up? London was hard. I didn’t know anyone and the hours were insane, but after about five months I began to enjoy things more. I met my wife there so it holds great memories for me. What’s your kitchen like? In my first head chef job I learned the hard way that you can’t go around shouting at people! Now I work in a much calmer way. It’s my job

16

as a manager to learn how the kitchen team works at their best, and provide them with that environment. What’s the most important quality every good chef should have? A good attitude. I’d rather have someone who wants to learn, than someone who knows a lot but doesn’t care. Do you still enjoy cooking at home? Most of the time I try to go out and see what other chefs are doing. What’s the most exciting thing happening on the Edinburgh food scene? Ben, the owner/ chef of The Edinburgh Food Studio, used to work at Noma. He’s invited some big names in the industry to do dinners at the studio – it’s a great place. Dan Ashmore is Head Chef at The Pompadour by Galvin, Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, Princes St, Edinburgh EH1 2AB. Tel: 0131 222 8975, thepompadourbygalvin.com

A proper night out… The name behind Social Bite, the Rose Street café which gives back to the homeless, Josh Littlejohn is on a mission. He’s the successful social enterprise. On 09 December he’s upping his game with his latest fundraising initiative, Sleep in the Park, when 9,000 people will be bedding down for the night in West Princes Street Gardens as part of his goal to eradicate homelessness in Scotland. They will be joined by a whole host of faces from music, acting and comedy but don’t expect a full-on all-nighter as you know it. There’s no booze. No tents. Just you, your sleeping bag and a few hot drinks… and stripped back sets from buskers Liam Gallagher, Amy MacDonald, Deacon Blue and Frightened Rabbit, plus talks by Sir Bob Geldof and a bedtime story read by John Cleese in the VIP tent for those who manage to raise more than £500. Not all bad, then. To sleep out, participants must raise a minimum of £100 which goes towards Social Bite addiction rehabilitation programs and supported housing (The Social Bite Village Project). For more details, visit sleepinthepark.co.uk.

What is it about Cabaret and the character Sally Bowles that makes them so iconic? The historical set-up of the show in the 1930s gives it a lot of depth and Sally herself is so interesting. She's extremely vulnerable, yet on the outside she's this ballsy woman who wants to be a star and does all she can to survive. Can you relate to Sally in any way? There are parts of her I can relate to as a woman and how we try to do the best we can with what we're given. What are you most relishing about playing her? She's sexy, very over-the-top and eccentric. That's one of the reasons the role was so appealing, but also she gets to sing some of the most incredible songs. What are the big challenges for you as a performer? I thought it would be the big note at the end of Mein Herr but, for me, it's about losing my inhibitions and giving it everything I've got.

BEND AND SNAP!

Everyone’s favourite blonde is coming to town this month as Legally Blonde: The Musical arrives at Festival Theatre from 27 November – 02 December. Get your tickets at ticketmaster.co.uk.

This is your first big stage musical. Any nerves? I'm so nervous. It's a massive role with a huge storyline and dancing thrown in. But I think nerves show you care and that it means a lot to you. The tour calls at Edinburgh Playhouse. What do you think of the city? Edinburgh is one of my favourite cities in the world. It's beautiful and it's got everything – amazing restaurants, great shops and lovely people. Louise stars alongside Will Young in Cabaret at the Edinburgh Playhouse from 14 – 18 November. Pam Thorburn’s

Glasgow The Ski Cross athlete on travelling, broken bones, and training for the 2018 Winter Olympics You grew up in Aberdeenshire. Why did you move to Glasgow? When my parents retired they wanted to try city life so they moved from Strathaven to Whitecraigs. I love being in this part of the city. There are loads of parks to run around in, and so many good bars and restaurants in the area. Best and worst things about the city? Best has to be the people! The worst has got to be the weather… What’s the city’s best kept secret? Kelvingrove Café in the west end. Where in or around Glasgow do you go for a quick escape? I love to visit Loch Lomond as a bit of an escape. It’s absolutely stunning there, and just outside the city. How did you get into skiing? My family are crazy-keen skiers, and I started on a holiday when I was three. I spent all my time racing after my older brother Scott. Why did you change from alpine to ski cross? I was heartbroken when I missed the 2010 Olympic Games and needed a change. I saw ski cross and knew I had to give it a go. What’s the difference? You race individually against the clock with alpine skiing. Fastest time wins. Four people race together over a lot of bumps, turns and big jumps in ski cross with the fastest two racers progressing to the next round... in the final the fastest wins. What does a typical day involve? If I’m in the mountains, I get up early to do some activation/warm up training before getting on my skis. I train on the slopes from around

8 ‘til 12 and head back down the mountain for lunch. Early afternoon I do some recovery biking, core and stretching in the gym then tune and wax my skis before dinner. After dinner I’ll do some video analysis of my ski training, and fall into bed soon after. How’s the Winter Olympics training going? It’s going really well. After a knee surgery this year, I’m feeling good on my skis and getting ready for the Olympic Qualifying races in December. What’s the most difficult thing about what you do? As much as I absolutely love travelling the world, it’s hard being on the road so much and away from friends and family. I usually miss all the birthdays, weddings and catch up dos.

Ever had any scary injuries? Too many! From broken hips to knees, shoulders to neck, I’ve had 13 surgeries in my career. Concussions are the scariest though because you can’t physically see anything wrong. What’s next for you after the Olympics? It really depends on how my body feels but I hope to finish the last World Cup races of the season and go from there. If you had to sum up Glasgow in three words, what would they be? Pure dead brilliant!

Lisa Catterson, owner of Farado Design, on buying bespoke and Fairtrade for your engagement ring.

“Every relationship and engagement is unique, so I always say, ‘why shouldn’t your ring be?’ Clients often tell me they couldn’t find exactly what they were looking for and so our bespoke process allows you to be involved in the design process and create something just for you”. On buying bespoke… “We have a fun, hands-on approach to designing your one-of-a-kind piece, starting with a consultation and inspiration session where we get to know you and your style. We then design and present a 3D model of your piece before sourcing and creating your final ring.” On buying Fairtrade and being ethical… “Uniquely, we use only Fairtrade Gold and ethically-sourced stones to ensure the materials are traceable and of the highest quality. Buying Fairtrade also makes a real difference to miners, their families and communities. It’s lovely to know the piece leaves a positive mark on clients as well as the people who made it happen.” On timings… “The process usually takes around six to eight weeks before your piece is presented to you.” To see my inspiration collections and for more details, visit farado.co.uk or Tel: 0141 255 2608. @faradodesign

e’ve made it through another summer. Not that we’re averse to a little sun every now and again, but for snow-obsessives the plummeting temperature sparks anticipation at this time every year. Winter is coming! Time to explore the best spots to hit-up in Scotland and abroad, as well as the latest gear to keep you looking and performing at your best out on the hill. HOMEGROWN HILLS: SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING IN SCOTLAND Conditions in Scotland do tend to get a bit of a beating from the uber-critical. But while it’s often a far cry from the champagne powder of the US or Japan, there are still plenty of fun, soft, snowy days to be had at Scottish resorts. Yes, you need a wee bit of luck with the weather, but that’s true of skiing and snowboarding anywhere. And as with our national sporting triumphs, their scarcity makes a good bluebird day in Scotland even sweeter. When the snow arrives, beginners can get their fix at The Lecht. Situated in Aberdeenshire and a three to four-hour drive from Scotland’s central belt, the Lecht is an ace spot to learn the basics and develop technique. There’s a choice of five nice and accessible nursery slopes, and lots of blues once you start to feel a bit more comfortable on your skis or board. For those somewhere between novice and pro, you can hone your skills at Glenshee – Scotland’s biggest resort – or Cairngorm Mountain, with their famous funicular railway. They’re situated at either end of the Cairngorms National Park, so your preference may depend on which direction you’re coming from, but each has a unique feel and, in time, you’ll find your favourite. There’s plenty of varied terrain at both, and over recent years they’ve stepped up their grooming, park features, and uplift facilities to offer an awesome day out for any level of rider. If you’re an experienced skier or snowboarder and you’re looking for something a little different, Scotland naturally provides a spectacular backdrop for a spot of ski touring or splitboarding. Armed with the right equipment, you can head out into the backcountry and make the most of Scotland’s fantastic ‘right to roam’ laws.

GREAT GEAR With a week in the mountains comes unpredictable weather. Having gear at your disposal that can handle different snow conditions and terrain types is a must. Check out these eclectic essentials. MEN’S SKI

Rossignol Soul 7 HD Remastered with AirTip 2.0 to save weight but add strength in the tip and tail, this best-selling all mountain ski will help you make the most of your winter trip. Playful in the powder yet solid when making turns on harder snow, the Soul 7 HD from Rossignol will help you master the mountain, whatever the weather throws at you. £499.95.

WOMEN’S SKI K2 FulLUVit 95 For the days when the weather can’t make up its mind, the K2 FulLUVit 95 proves the perfect companion. As at home on groomed runs as they are in the park or in the powder, the versatile all-terrain rocker profile will keep you conquering the slopes all day long. £379.95

MORE PARTY THAN POWDER?

Rock the Pistes 18 – 24 March, Portes du Soleil Rock the Pistes returns to Portes du Soleil for its 8th year. Live music spread over a week, with stunning mountain views around the likes of Avoriaz, Champéry, Morzine, and Les Gets. Rag’n’Bone Man headlines for a second consecutive season. Snowbombing 09 – 14 April Mayerhofen, Austria Chase and Status, and Run the Jewels are the big names to headline Snowbombing. It’s as close as you’re going to get to a full-blown festival in the mountains and is well worth a look. Zermatt Unplugged 10 – 14 April, Zermatt Zermatt Unplugged celebrates music, mood and beautiful setting. This year’s line-up features Swiss legend Stephan Eicher, our very own Paolo Nutini, The Temper Trap, and Nelly Furtado.

For some, a solid après game is a vital element to any good winter break. Take it to the next level with one of Europe’s snow festivals.

Areas like the Ben Lawers range were popular ski areas back in the 1930s and can still provide thrills if you don’t mind getting yourself to the top of the hill. Just make sure you grab a transceiver, probe and shovel, and learn how to use them before you go. Avalanches are a risk, even with our modest snow levels. JET SET AND GO: SNOWBOARDING AND SKIING AWAY FROM HOME Our favourite snowsports spots are often heavily influenced by that one awesome holiday a decade ago where we had a great week of snow, even better chalet hosts and endless après. Whether you’re looking to head off overseas for a short

mini break or no-holds-barred uber holiday, there’s somewhere to fit the bill. Accessibility is key for a weekend away. Let’s not spend four hours on an airport-to-resort bus when it’s not essential. Geneva offers access to dozens of resorts both in Switzerland and France. From the airport, you can get to the likes of Chamonix or Megeve in as little as an hour (traffic dependent). Both of these resorts have endless terrain, great accommodation and plenty ski schools for the wee ones. A great option if you’ve only got a couple of days, and there are daily flights into Geneva from Edinburgh. There’s no doubting that chasing snow is an expensive pursuit, but that doesn’t mean that it has to be

an unaffordable one – there are options out there that are brilliant on a budget. The weak pound isn’t doing anyone any favours, but resorts in areas like the Dolomites are going to be cheaper than the likes of France and Switzerland. Eastern Europe can also deliver the goods – check out Bulgaria and Slovenia for something different. And if all else fails, you can always have a staycation, cut your carbon footprint and stick around in Scotland! Got money to spend? The holy grail for many is North America, and you can’t get much better than a Mountain Collective pass. One ticket gives you access to the likes of Aspen Snowmass, Banff, Mammoth and Squaw Valley. A FLOOR STORY

Emily Murray, founder/editor of awardwinning interiors blog The Pink House, says a vintage-inspired floor is key to creating a fabulous home

W

hen it comes to checking out the most on-trend interiors, there’s only one place to look: down. That’s because nowadays the hottest of homes, most hipster of hotels and brilliant of bars all have one thing in common: wowfactor floors. Or, as every other Instagram feed puts it: #ihavethisthingwithfloors. Check out the uber-popular hashtag and you’ll find that vintage or vintageinspired floor coverings that tell a story are particularly popular on the most influential interiors feeds. One man who knows all about our insatiable lust for well-worn floors is Lee Thornley, owner of Bert & May, a so-hotright-now specialist supplier of handmade artisan tiles, based in London’s East End since 2013. Pre-Bert & May, Thornley was setting up a reclaimed tile company in Andalusia, Spain, when he discovered that such pre-loved materials were highly prized by interior designers and architects. In 2010 this led to a new venture, working with a small Spanish family business to create artisan encaustic tiles using traditional handmade techniques. These tiles, with their vintage-inspired designs, were a huge hit, and so in 2013 Bert & May was born. Only four years later, Bert & May’s tiles bring warmth, colour and pattern to some of the UK’s most prestigious hotels and sought-after homes (exclusive member’s club Soho House was Bert & May’s first big client; they requested 87 million tiles). And last month the brand announced its new range in association with The Conran Shop. But why does Thornley think his vintage-style handmade tiles are such a hit? “People are growing tired of massproduced identikit products. We want to feel more connection with - and ownership of - our design choices,” Thornley explains. “Every single one of our artisan encaustic tiles is hand-poured by our fourth-generation makers and cured out in the Spanish sunshine. Instead of bland perfection you get tiny variations that create interest and depth for the eye and a warmth for the soul.” Five-star hotels are also increasingly aware of the allure of authenticity, and this is reflected in their choice of

61

INTERIORS

flooring. For example, Gleneagles’ bar and lounge was recently fitted with reclaimed mid-century French oak parquet. And with so many of us stealing style tips from hotels it’s no surprise that we’re seeking out floors with a story to tell for our own homes. “A statement floor is a great way to get that boutique hotel look,” says interiors PR Simon Midgley. "I personally love parquet flooring. It reminds me of the school assembly but can also be totally modernised by using ceramic tiles and colourful combinations to create a pattern tailored to your preferences.” But if you’re after the bespoke look underfoot, you don’t need to go to the hassle and expense of having your entire floor replaced. Because…rugs! “We find there’s a lot of interest in vibrant colours that can spruce up a space,” says Bert Rozeman of Larusi, a rug boutique that specialises in selling vintage Moroccan designs. “We sell lots of Moroccan Azillal rugs and have an amazing collection of colourful rag rugs called Boucherouite that are also very popular.” As one of Larusi’s many erudite clients, world-famous interior designer Ilse Crawford, puts it: "Larusi rugs bring a layer of life to a space. They're earthy and expressive and tell the story of the people who made them.”

Rockett St George reclaimed flooring

“THE RISE IN POPULARITY FOR VINTAGE AND RECLAIMED FLOORING COMES AS NO SURPRISE TO US, AS VINTAGE PIECES, FURNITURE AND FLOORING NEVER REALLY GOES OUT OF STYLE.” Of course, such authenticity can come with a hefty price tag, but being on a budget is no barrier to telling a floor story of your own. “Reclaimed flooring is a sustainable and surprisingly inexpensive flooring solution,” enthuses Lucy St George, co-founder of hugely popular online interiors boutique Rockett St George (rockettstgeorge.co.uk). As well as hand-made encaustic tiles, her store sells reclaimed wood floor tiles (£125 per square metre), made using reclaimed teak from redundant buildings in India. Keen to invest in a floor with an authentic story, but worry it’s a passing fad? Never fear – these floors are going nowhere; as St George puts it: “The rise in popularity for vintage and reclaimed flooring comes as no surprise to us, as vintage pieces, furniture and flooring never really goes out of style.” For more interior inspiration, visit The Pink House at pinkhouse.co.uk or on Instagram at @pinkhouseliving

ABOVE & BEYOND

Orange and blue might not sound like the most sophisticated of beauty combos but the catwalks and red carpets have been filled with models and stars experimenting with the colours. “Unexpected colour pairings of orange and deep navy feel really fresh and modern,” says Victoria Beckham, who championed the look with her latest must-have eye palette for Estee Lauder (Eye Matte Duo in Saphir Orange Vif, £48). You can also get in on the trend with a bright orange shadow paired with a blue liner. For an intense sweep of colour across the lids, make-up artist Mairi Gordon applied MAC Pigment in Genuine Orange, £16, blended with Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream, £26, before lining upper and lower water lines with L’Oreal Infaillible Gel Crayon in I’ve Got The Blue, £4.99. To keep focus on the eyes, a flawless base was created by buffing Givenchy Matissime Velvet Foundation, £35, into the skin while lips had just a subtle slick of Chanel Rouge Allure Ink in Highway, £28.

FEATURES

ELECTRIC BLUE BROW

If you’re brave enough to rock a directional fashion look, the ‘underbrow’ is the latest place to sport a flash of colour. Mairi kept model Eve’s brows in shape with a slick of Vaseline then painted a thick line just below the brow bone using Rimmel Colour Precise eyeliner in Blue, £5.99. A feline flick above the eyes and a juicy pout of Clarins Joli Rouge in Red Orange, £20, complete the look.

FEATURES

NAVY NIGHTS

Sparkling eyes in deepest blue make a striking evening look. Starting with a porcelain base, Mairi used Estee Lauder Pure Colour Envy Shadow Paint in Midnight Fury, £21, over the lid then lined the bottom water line with Clarins Crayon Kohl in Intense blue, £17, and blended below the lash line, finishing with black mascara and a matte peach lip (Illamasqua Lipstick in Over, £20).

TRIED AND TESTED

PROFHILO Skye Miller tries out the latest technology in beauty rejuvenation

I

f your skin is showing signs of aging and your usual treatments are just not doing the job then the breaking new technology Profhilo, administered by the lovely Dr Victoria Dobbie of Face and Body Clinic, might be your miracle cure. We start losing a significant amount of collagen, elastin and Hyaluronic acid from the age of 30. As a 30-something mum of two young girls I spend my spare minutes nowadays fixating on frown lines so I was more than happy to give Profhilo a go. The treatment counteracts skin laxity by stimulating and remodelling the skin’s collagen and elastin fibres. It is not a filler, however. It’s a bio-remodelling product, the first injectable of its kind. My first consultation with Dr Victoria consisted of a good chat about the treatment followed by some closeup images of my skin. Clinic director and founder Dr Victoria Dobbie has more than 13 years’ experience in aesthetic medicine and specialises in providing full facial rejuvenation; she’s a two-time winner of Aesthetician of the Year and I was definitely in safe hands. A major plus with this treatment is that its quick to administer and practically pain-free with no down time

(the only stipulation being not to wear make up until the next day). I was even given the all clear to exercise that evening. The injections are given in five key areas of the face and can vary slightly depending on your concerns, with results lasting up to six months. The product flows and distributes itself, integrating with the tissue. It targets volume depleted areas and can give a dramatic improvement in tissue quality. After the first week my skin had benefitted from an intense hydration boost. One month on from the first visit, Dr Victoria administered the second round of injections, again quickly and easily. The results were evident over the next few days. My skin looks radiant, fuller and my lines are much softer, more difficult to make out. With a follow-up appointment scheduled for four weeks’ time, I’m over the moon with the results and I have no doubt I’ll be booking in for another appointment next year.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...

WOLF

ALICE David Pollock talks Rock, feminism and politics with one of the best bands of their generation.

76

MUSIC

BECOMING ONE 1OFTHEY’RE OF THE ROCK GROUPS THEIR TIME Lead singer, Ellie Rowsill, has a cool-as-ice presence and a vocal which flits with ease between the dusky, Lana Del Rey-echoing style of indie-pop anthem Beautifully Unconventional and the serrated, angry rock of Yuk Foo. The debut album My Life is Cool emerged in 2015, earning a bucketload of sales and a Grammy nomination; the critics mostly agree that this summer’s follow-up Visions of a Life was a big leap on from it.

ROWSILL IS A 2ELLIE YOUNG FEMINIST ICON This goes all the way back to her school days, she told the Telegraph, when she went to Camden School for Girls, which was founded by suffragette Frances Buss. “We were brought up to be aware of feminism but, also, not to consider yourself a woman, in a way,” she said. “You don’t play a gender role, you play the role of yourself. So I never felt much like a girl in the world. I felt like a person.”

3

THEY CHANNEL THEIR ERA IN OTHER WAYS, AS WELL Contrary to people who complain that musicians aren’t political any more, Wolf Alice set up Bands 4 Refugees in 2016 and vocally supported Jeremy Corbyn at this year’s general election. “The stakes have been higher over the last couple of years, and events like Trump and Brexit have made people realise that if you don’t get involved, the wrong things can happen,” guitarist Joff Oddie told NME. “That’s why if you do have a platform, it’s so important to try to do something about it.”

“I NEVER FELT MUCH LIKE A GIRL IN THE WORLD. I FELT LIKE A PERSON.” ELLIE ROWSILL FILM 4THEY’RE STARS ALREADY

In a manner of speaking. In 2016, British director Michael Winterbottom – whose hits include 24 Hour Party People and the Steve Coogan and Rob Bryden-starring series The Trip – produced the feature length tour documentary On the Road, starring the band, and in their young life they’ve also racked up Mercury, Brit and Ivor Novello award nominations. They’ve been around for a while, since starting as a folk duo in 2010, but when the rise was fast for Oddie, bassist Theo Ellis, drummer Joel Amey and Londonraised Rowsill, the daughter of a decorator and a nurse who used to repair denim for a living.

DON’T ASK 5JUST FOR ALICE

Rowsill must be sick already of people calling her by that name in the street. The group are named after Wolf-Alice, a story from Angela Carter’s classic book of short feminist horror stories The Bloody Chamber, which takes influence from Little Red Riding Hood and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in its tale of a feral female child and a group of puritanical nuns’ attempts to civilise her. It fits perfectly with the group’s gothic style. Wolf Alice plays the Barrowlands, Glasgow, 11 and 12 November. Their second album Visions of a Life is out now. wolfalice.co.uk

BELLA

Cast your mind back to the start of the millennium and Prosecco was still one of Italy’s best kept secrets. How times have changed — nowadays it’s hard to imagine a world without everyone’s favourite fizz. One of the first brands to arrive in Scotland was Rocco Venezia, brought to us from the family vineyard in the hills North of Venice by husband and wife team, Andrea and Roslyn Tumiotto, and distributed around the country from its home on William Street in Edinburgh’s West End. Good news is it’s also an outstanding quality Prosecco; clean, crisp, delicate to the taste and entirely quaffable. It tops our festive fizz list time after time. roccovenezia.com

ROUND OUR WAY Two recent openings mean a couple of neighbourhoods have landed eateries offering everything from brunch, to dinner, to drinks

HERRINGBONE Carine Seitz satisfies her appetite at this new Goldenacre haunt

H

erringbone is surrounded by residential properties, with no other bistro or bar in sight. On the pitch of what used to be a bank, the self-proclaimed watering hole occupies a whole corner, with wrap around windows providing ample people-watching. This is their second outlet, sister to the original in North Berwick, and if their success there is anything to go by the Goldenacre branch will do very nicely. We’re struck by the Insta-worthy interior – the vibe is pared-back Scandi: think Ercol furniture and pale greys and whites, bare wood and rattan. The daytime menu includes the usual bistro suspects (some steak options, choice of burgers including salmon with sesame crust, pickled cucumber and wasabi); as well as a chicken tagine, risotto, salads and for smaller appetites starters like mushrooms on toast would suffice as a stand alone dish. My dining partner and I don’t fit into the small appetite category – she’s eating for two, and I’m greedy – so we choose three courses. We start, she with pork skewers with radish and carrot salad, £5.25, and I with Belhaven smoked fish with crostini, beetroot and capers, £5.75. Mine is good, quality smoked fish on pleasingly salted, toasted thin bread. The pork skewers across the table are chewy sticky ribs, a wee bit tricky to navigate on skewers, but nonetheless very tasty. My 8oz seared steak slices served with rocket, parmesan and butter beans, £15.95, is lovely, charred on the outside and pink in the middle. We expected the cod and chorizo with olive, tomato and

garlic toast, £10,95, to be pan-fried fish with chorizo, but what arrives is a huge and hearty stew that ticks the box for mama-to-be’s hearty appetite. Our side of fries, £2.50. are salty and perfectly crisp. Desserts provide a sweet finale: warm bramble pudding with rosemary anglaise, £4.95, is comforting; salted chocolate torte with chocolate pretzels gets easily polished off. As we get ready to leave after our sizeable lunch, two elderly ladies seated at the next table have smaller appetites: they order two porn star martinis and a basket of bread, telling us slyly that we’ll be doing the same at their age. I hope so – although I think we’ll always have room for more than just bread. To enjoy 20 per cent off your food bill, simply show the advert on page 93 when you visit. 2 South Trinity Rd, EH5 3NR. SUGAR BOAT Helensburgh has upped its food game, as Tracey McCallum discovers

H

elensburgh is a place that conjures up visions of fish suppers and ice creams on the seafront. Having grown up there I can testify that the chips were great, but dining out was limited to Chinese or Indian fayre. Until recently, that is, because a new bistro called Sugar Boat is creating quite a stir. Although I’d booked for two people, we also had my nephew in tow when we visited. Unfazed, they welcomed us warmly and made a fuss of the wee guy while Jackie and I set about studying the menus. Small but perfectly formed with around six-eight starters and mains to choose from, the menu offers interesting dishes without being pretentious and it’s reasonably priced too with small lunch bites for as little as £5.50-£7.50. I went for lamb sweetbreads to start, served with roasted aubergine and a yoghurt dressing, £6.50. They were utterly delicious, the aubergine smoky and aromatic. Over the

table, Jackie chose Scottish smoked haddock and saffron potato salad, £7.50. It looked pretty on the plate but didn’t last long... Whilst my teething nephew chewed on his high chair, I chomped down on a bavette steak with ox shin and beef dripping boulangerie potatoes, £15.50. The steak was cooked to perfection – on the rare side for me – and the potatoes were indulgent and moreish. Jackie’s whole roasted coquelet with watercress bread sauce, £12.50, was a big hit too, scoffed with some chunky hand cut chips, £2.95, and baby gem salad, £2.95. Bellies full, we left happy with plans to return soon – without the car or child – to enjoy a glass of wine or two. You should do the same. Sugar Boat is a long overdue addition to the town offering sophisticated dining with warm, local hospitality.

“THE MENU OFFERS INTERESTING DISHES WITHOUT BEING PRETENTIOUS AND IT’S REASONABLY PRICED TOO”

The Ivy on the Square Amanda Southey discovers modern British classics and bread nirvana on St Andrew Square

H

aving visited the London West Street branch of The Ivy in May, I’ve been waiting with anticipation to try the latest Edinburgh incarnation, The Ivy On The Square. Fast forward to a dreary Tuesday night in October and that’s where I find myself, glass of The Ivy Collection Champagne, Montoy, £9.50, in hand, admiring the Parisian-style interior with my date for the evening: my mum. As we pour over the extensive menu – the choice of modern British classics is vast – our server Kerry explains that all meat and fish is sourced in Scotland. Lovers of a loaf, we (I) order salt-crusted sourdough bread with salted butter, £3.95, to appease my grumbling tummy. One bite in and I’m in bread heaven: the salty crust, the warm doughy centre, the butter… After regaining my composure, we choose Atlantic sea scallops with truffle risoni, shaved parmesan, black truffle and sweet potato crisps, £11.95; and Scottish smoked salmon, with rye soda bread, £9.50, to start. The former perfectly sized, a pleasing marriage of sweet parmesan, salty scallop and rich truffle flavours; the latter, slivers of peach-coloured tender salmon with a wonderful smoky taste.

86

Slightly concerned about how I’ll manage my main given my inability to stop eating sourdough, I choose a glass of Provence Rose, Minuty Prestige, Cotes de Provence, France 2016, £11.50, to help oil my appetite and valiantly carry on. My roast half chicken, £14.95, is off the bone and flatironed with a crispy skin and accompanying rosemary jus, and tastes like a dream Sunday roast. My mum, ever the traditionalist, opts for steak, egg and chips, £14.50, which is perfectly-cooked meat, fluffy homemade chips and two fried hens eggs (not runny, as requested). We take sides of baked sweet potato, yoghurt and kale pesto, £3.75; and peas, sugar snaps and baby shoots, £3.25, for good measure – always good to tick the five-a-day box. We share (I blame the bread) a blackberry ice cream sundae, £7.95, sinking into vanilla ice cream, meringue and blackberry mousse and shortbread. It’s a fitting end to a fabulous dining experience; from the fantastic service to the sumptuous food in beautiful surroundings. It won’t be long before our next visit. 6 St Andrew Sq, EH2 2BD. THE EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE…

Laura Wood heads to Rabble for £1 oysters and a £15 dinner deal

Y

es, really. It’s as simple as that. I clocked the deals on a recent midweek visit to Rabble with friends. Unfortunately for us, we had missed the 7pm cut off but instead, tucked into a fabulous sharing plate for three. Called ‘On the Board’ it included sticky sesame wings, 15 hour pork ribs, chilli brisket, creamed corn, skinny fries, root slaw, flatbreads and beer-braised onions (£12.50 per person). One of my friends in the party was delighted to discover the new venue; she’d “never heard of Rabble and had never been before”. Funny. She had been to Rick’s for after work drinks back in the day but so good is the venue’s recent transformation into Rabble that she declared the place practically unrecognisable. I agree. Fresh and modern with a spectacular circular bar as a focal point, it’s got a kick-ass cocktail menu to boot that’s worth many a returning visit until you’ve decided on your ultimate favourite. But I digress. Let me tell you about the offers going down now - both perfectly placed to satiate your needs either as a refuel after a busy day in the office/ at the shops, or as a prelude to a great night out on the town.

“HECK, ON A GOOD DAY I’D PAY £15 ALONE FOR THE HOT CHOCOLATE ESPRESSO MARTINI SHARING DESSERT” The ‘Early Rabbler’, available Sunday to Thursday from 5pm-7pm, offers two main courses and a sharing dessert, with a glass of wine or pint of tank beer each for only £15 per person*. This is a good deal by any account but when you consider what’s on the menu, it becomes even more enticing. All cooked on the uber trendy Robata grill, there’s braised ox cheek, Aberdeen Angus steak burgers and a to-die-for iberico secreto for meat lovers; marinated salmon and grilled cod for fans of fish, and a tasty black lentil dahl or roast butternut squash tart for the veggie loving crowd. Heck, the hot chocolate espresso martini sharing dessert tastes and looks as good as it sounds and, on a good day, I’d probably pay £15 for that alone. Or, if you’re all about the oysters, Rabble’s Oyster Happy Hour will put a smile on your face. Every weekday between 4pm and 7pm, you can suck freshly shucked Scottish oysters, to your heart’s content for the tiny price of £1 per oyster. #weshuckemyousuckem Weekday evenings never tasted so good. 55a Frederick St, EH2 1LH, www.rabbleedinburgh.co.uk. i-on members get a free glass of Prosecco each when they book a table *Price is based on two people sharing. Wine or beer can be exchanged for a 330ml bottle of Pepsi/ Diet Pepsi or 7Up. Glass of wine is 175ml house wine.

BIT AT THE BACK

I GO FOR A MORNING RUN WHICH CLEARS MY HEAD AND HELPS ME FOCUS ON THE DAY AHEAD”

WHERE DO YOU LIVE? My wife and I live near the top of Leith Walk with our incredibly vocal cat Wilson (we’re expecting a baby in December, so things will get even noisier then). It’s so convenient for town, transport links and getting to East Pizzas, and there are great independent cafes, restaurants, pubs and bakeries. WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU DO ON WAKING? Hit snooze! I’m not someone who launches myself out of bed to embrace the new day, I drag myself up with reluctance. Then breakfast is porridge and a large quantity of Williams & Johnson’s coffee. I catch up on emails and paperwork before going for a run, which helps me clear my head

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF…

Roly Simpson, owner of East Pizzas and Toasted Radish bespoke catering

and focus on the day ahead. I cycle to work, but if I need to collect supplies from say, East Coast Cured or I.J. Mellis, I need the car. WHAT’S YOUR FIRST PRIORITY WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT WORK? Without doubt, the sourdough. We ambient bulk prove it for 24 hours and then fridge prove once balled for another 24 hours. It’s leavened

98

naturally with our starter – we use only flour, water, salt and our naturally occurring yeast. There are so many benefits to making dough in this way that have been lost with our desire for quick and fast alternatives. I work with my business partner Rob and our small but well-formed team. My responsibilities are the same as any small business owner: marketing, finance, accounting, emptying the bins. But my passion is the cooking, whether it’s managing the sourdough or creating sorbets. WHAT’S A TYPICAL DINNER? I thought I might get bored of pizza but I haven’t! WHAT TIME DO YOU GET HOME? Generally not until after 11:30pm. I unwind by reading – currently, Richard P Feynman’s Surely You’re Joking, Mr Feynman and The Third Plate by Dan Barber. I’m not sure how much I take in, but… CAREER HIGHLIGHT? I spent 12 years working in property but my ambition was to launch a business around something I love so the highlights have been starting Toasted Radish and opening East Pizzas.
